Here’s what happens to your body when you eat a burger

There isn't any doubt that burgers are tasty and people across all age groups love to have them. But we also know they are not good for our health, so much so that even occasional binging can be harmful for your health. Don't believe us? Let us tell you what exactly happens to your body after eating a burger.

What science says...You can count on science to ruin everything. Science says that junk foods are full of calories, fat and excess sodium and having it even once can be bad for your health. For example, a single hamburger contains 500 calories, 25 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, and 1,000 milligrams of sodium, which is enough to cause havoc in your system.

After 15 minutes of your first bite of burger, you will experience a massive surge of glucose. This triggers the release of insulin, which makes you feel hungry again in a few hours. Repeating this pattern can increase the risk of diabetes. In scientific terms, the process of taking excessive calories in one sitting puts oxidative stress on cells.

Having a meal high, which is loaded with saturated fat can be harmful to your health. When a group of healthy men were fed with food high in saturated fat, it was found that their arteries were significantly impaired and did not dilate as much. This restriction of blood flow can lead to cardiac disease later in life.

The high amount of sodium can have a negative impact on the blood vessel.

So next time you have the temptation to grab a burger, think twice!

Researchers have identified how the ability of the arteries to supply blood gets impaired with age, a finding that could lead to future treatments for some forms of vascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death worldwide, often is associated with ageing arteries that restrict blood flow.
"We found that older arteries had a significantly lower number of sensory nerves in the tissues surrounding them and they were less sensitive to an important neurotransmitter responsible for dilation," said lead author of the study Erika Boerman, postdoctoral fellow at University of Missouri School of Medicine in the US.

Dilation refers to the action or condition of becoming or being made wider, larger, or more open.

The study focused on mesenteric arteries - a type of artery that supplies blood to the small intestines - of mice that were four months and 24 months old.

These ages correspond to humans in their early 20s and mid-60s, respectively.

Without stimulation, the diameter of the blood vessels of both younger and older mice was approximately the same.

However, when stimulated to induce dilation, differences between the age groups became apparent.

"The younger arteries dilated as expected," Boerman said.

"However, when we performed the same stimulation to the arteries of older mice, the vessels did not dilate,” she noted.

Poor neurotransmitter function and a reduced presence of sensory nerves surrounding older vessels lead to age-related dysfunction of mesenteric arteries, Boerman explained.

"The importance of this discovery is that if we can identify why this happens to mesenteric arteries, it may be possible to prevent the same thing from happening to other blood vessels throughout the body," Boerman said.

The findings appeared in the Journal of Physiology.

Eating less may increase life expectancy

A new study has found that eating less or consuming low-nutrients diet can extend your lifespan and keep your safe against diseases of old age such as cancer.

Margo Adler, Evolutionary biologist at University of New South Wale (UNSW), Australia, said that restriction in diet can play an important role in increasing rates of cellular recycling and repair mechanisms in the body.

The researcher claims that this theory can be used to understand the ability behind animals reproduction even when they face shortage of food.

The animals used the nutrients which are stored in the cells can be recycled and reused.

"This is the most intriguing aspect, from a human health stand point," Adler said.

"Although extended lifespan may simply be a side effect of dietary restriction, a better understanding of these cellular recycling mechanisms that drive the effect may hold the promise of longer, healthier lives for humans," she said.

The study added that it could allow drug makers to develop drugs that mimic this effect.
