White Mushrooms: Nutrition, Benefits, and Uses

White mushrooms are the most cultivated type of mushroom in the world .

Aside from being very low in calories, they offer multiple health-promoting effects, such as improved heart health and cancer-fighting properties.

This article explains everything you need to know about white mushrooms, including their potential benefits and how to enjoy them.

White mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) belong to the Fungi kingdom and constitute about 90% of the mushrooms consumed in the United States .

Agaricus bisporus can be harvested at varying stages of maturity. When young and immature, they are known as white mushrooms if they have a white color, or crimini mushrooms if they have slight brown shade.

When fully grown, they’re known as portobello mushrooms, which are bigger and darker.
White mushrooms are also known as table, common, button, or champignon mushrooms. They have a small stem, smooth cap, and mild flavor that pairs well with many dishes.

White mushrooms grow on composted soil among a wide range of other fungi and bacteria, which play essential roles in the process, as they break down raw materials before the mushrooms can grow .
You can find them fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or even in powdered form.
SummaryWhite mushrooms are incredibly popular in the United States, among many other counties. They have a mild flavor and smooth cap, and they can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or powdered.

Like most mushrooms, white mushrooms are low in calories but pack plenty of nutrients.
One cup (96 grams) of whole white mushrooms provides :
  • Calories: 21
  • Carbs: 3 grams
  • Fiber: 1 gram
  • Protein: 3 grams
  • Fat: 0 grams
  • Vitamin D: 33% of the Daily Value (DV)
  • Selenium: 16% of the DV
  • Phosphorus: 12% of the DV
  • Folate: 4% of the DV
Due to their exposure to UV rays or sunlight, mushrooms are a natural, non-animal source of vitamin D2 that’s capable of increasing blood levels of this vitamin as effectively as a supplement — and white mushrooms are no exception .
Your body turns vitamin D2 into the active form of vitamin D, which it needs to absorb calcium and keep your bones healthy.
Vitamin D deficiency may lead to osteoporosis, mineralization defects, and muscle weakness, causing falls and fractures .
Similarly, research suggests that white mushrooms offer some vitamin B12. Since this vitamin is usually obtained from animal sources, this may be beneficial for those following a plant-based diet
Additionally, they provide a higher protein content than most vegetables, which would also be beneficial if you follow a plant-based diet, as they may help you increase your protein intake .
SummaryWhite mushrooms are low in calories and sugar. They are also high in protein and vitamin D, and they’re a source of vitamin B12. As such, they are considered beneficial for those following plant-based diets.

White mushrooms are widely consumed both because of their nutritional value and wide range of medicinal properties.

They have cancer-fighting properties

Multiple antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, ergothioneine, glutathione, selenium, and vitamin C, are believed to be behind mushrooms’ potential cancer-fighting properties .
These antioxidants help combat the harmful effects of oxidative stress, which leads to cellular damage that can accelerate aging and increase the risk of developing heart disease and certain cancers .
The main phenolic compounds in white mushrooms are flavonoids and phenolic acids, which have the potential to act both as antioxidants and pro-oxidants.

As antioxidants, they help improve cell survival, while as pro-oxidants, they lead to cell death to prevent tumor growth .

What’s more, polysaccharides — one of white mushrooms’ main bioactive compounds — may likewise have potent anticancer effects.

One specific type of polysaccharide is beta glucan. It stimulates your immune system to activate macrophages and natural killer cells, which protect the body from infection, harmful organisms, and diseases, including cancer

White mushrooms are also rich in glutathione and ergothioneine.

Glutathione acts both as an antioxidant and detoxification agent, meaning that it helps eliminate potentially harmful substances that are foreign to the body. Meanwhile, ergothioneine protects DNA from oxidative damage .

Lastly, vitamin C and selenium offer anticancer properties that enhance your immune system’s production of protective cells, including natural killer cells, which help defend against cancer development

Additionally, vitamin C inhibits certain enzymes, preventing cancer from spreading .

Though research is encouraging, most studies have focused on the effects of white mushrooms’ compounds. No studies have specifically evaluated the effects of eating white mushrooms on cancer, so further research is needed to verify these claims.

May promote heart health

Oxidative stress, inflammation, and high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are strongly linked to heart disease, and white mushrooms’ content of ergothioneine and beta glucan may help reduce this risk.

Beta glucan is a type of soluble fiber that lowers blood cholesterol levels through its ability to form a gel-like substance when digested. It then traps triglycerides and cholesterol, preventing their absorption

Similarly, research suggests that ergothioneine may help reduce triglyceride levels after a meal.

One study in 10 men found that consuming either 2 teaspoons (8 grams) or 1 tablespoon (16 grams) of mushroom powder as part of a meal significantly reduced their blood triglycerides levels, compared with the control group .

Researchers attributed this effect to the powder’s ergothioneine content.

Additionally, ergothioneine may help inhibit arterial plaque development, a risk factor for heart disease that may lead to high blood pressure and stroke .

Other potential benefits

White mushrooms may provide some additional health benefits, including:
  • Blood sugar control. The polysaccharides in white mushrooms may help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin resistance
  • Improved gut health. Their polysaccharides also act as prebiotics, or food for your beneficial gut bacteria, which help improve gut health ).
SummaryWhite mushrooms are rich in many bioactive compounds that may protect against cancer and heart disease, as well as help improve blood sugar control and gut health.

You can find white mushrooms in various presentations, such as fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and powdered.
Fresh mushrooms have a short shelf life of 3–4 days. Thus, freezing, canning, and drying are some of the methods used to extend their shelf life without compromising their nutritional quality .
You can enjoy your fresh and dried mushrooms cooked or raw. If you want to, you can also rehydrate dried mushrooms by soaking them in water.
However, you might want to cook the frozen and canned varieties, as their texture may have changed a bit during processing.
Lastly, powdered white mushrooms are mainly used to enhance the nutritional value of foods, specifically to increase the protein content of baked products
SummaryYou can enjoy white mushrooms in a variety of ways, including fresh, dried, canned, frozen, or powdered.

Due to their mild flavor and soft texture, white mushrooms make a great addition to a variety of dishes.
Both the caps and stems are edible, and you can eat them cooked or raw.
Here are a couple of suggestions regarding how to add them to your diet:
  • Slice them and add them raw to your favourite salad
  • Sautée them in olive oil with garlic, rosemary, salt, and pepper for a side of cooked mushrooms.
  • Add them to a stir-fry along with other vegetables and your choice of protein.
  • Cook them with scrambled eggs or add them as a filling to an omelet for a healthy breakfast.
  • Roast them at 350°F (176°C) with sprigs of rosemary and thyme for a crunchy snack.
  • Sautée them with carrots, leeks, garlic, and onions, and boil them in water to make a hearty and healthy mushroom broth.
You can also buy the powdered form and add it to your next baked treat.
SummaryBoth the caps and stems of white mushrooms are edible, and you can enjoy them with many dishes, including breakfast, snacks, and desserts.

White mushrooms have a wide range of bioactive compounds that offer several health benefits, including cancer-fighting properties, cholesterol-lowering effects, and improved gut health.

They are also very low in calories and have a high protein content.

You can add them to almost any type of dish, allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal that offers their multiple health benefits.

Sweet Treats That Won't Make You Gain Weight

The moment we decide to follow a diet, we reduce the amount of sugar intake first. Studies show that this method helps fight against obesity and excess weight pretty well. Nevertheless, you shouldn't completely exclude it from your diet as sweet products enrich us with energy. Here we take a look at what kind of sugar can replace high-calorie cupcakes and other sweet treats that make us gain weight.

1. Sorbet
Sorbet (which is basically an ice cream without milk) is fat-free. It also contains fewer calories. Sorbet also comes in a variety of flavors, including frozen berries and other fruit which contains the same amount of vitamins as fresh ones.

2. Fruit
Fruit is a popular food and one that can be used in place of candies. Studies show that eating fruit doesn't lead to excess weight. However, if you count calories, you're recommended to eat a grapefruit (which contains 30kcal and 7g of carbs per 100g) instead of a banana (which contains 95kcal and 21g of carbs per 100g). To keep the sugar to a minimum try to eat perfectly ripe fruit as overripe ones contain too much glucose.

3. Berries
Berries come in a variety of forms - from cranberries to raspberries, strawberries and red currant which are all considered to be low-calorie berries. Cherries, pomegranates, blueberries, and apricots, however, do have high sugar levels. In addition, berries are also pretty good for you. Raspberries, for instance, remove excess fluid from the body. Berries also have a good effect on the digestive system and speed up the metabolism.

4. Jam
Essentially, jam is high in sugar. However, it does have its benefits when taken in its natural form. Jam contains a great amount of pectin, a polysaccharide that normalizes gastrointestinal transit and maintains the bacterial balance in our body.

5. Pastries
If you're looking to lose weight, people know that they have to stop eating muffins and cakes since they are high in sugar and calories. However, there are certain tricks that you can do to enjoy your favorite sweets. Try to replace high-calorie wheat flour with corn, flax, buckwheat, rye or oat flour. Use stevia instead of sugar and vegetable fats (such as olive oil) instead of butter and margarine.

Gut-Friendly Foods

According to a study published, a new complex carbohydrate found in moss could possibly be exploited for health or other uses. The researchers noted that the polysaccharide looks more like the gut-friendly, health-promoting beta-glucan that is generally found in oats and other cereals. A polysaccharide is a complex carbohydrate that is made up of sugar molecules. The research team was looking into the evolutionary history of the beta-glucan when they made this discovery.

Beta-glucan, another polysaccharide is a dietary fibre that is known to have many health benefits. It is abundant in cereals like oats and barley but has not been found in moss despite the plants having similar genes. The researchers took one of these similar genes from moss to see if it would lead to the production of beta glucan.

The researchers have called it arabinoglucan and believe the way two different sugars link together will make it structurally similar to beta-glucan. While the researchers are NOT advocating moss, they claim that there is great potential for this new polysaccharide.

We still don't know if we can eat moss, but we know a list of foods that help cleanse your gut and ensure that it functions healthy. Here are some gut-friendly foods that you should definitely include in your daily diet.
1. Ginger
Ginger is a humble kitchen ingredient that has been used for centuries to cure gut problems. Slice whole ginger root, combine with water and simmer for 20 minutes and then strain and sweeten with honey to make a pungent tea. Drink for a healthy gut.
2. Fennel seeds
Fennel seeds or saunf are known to improve digestion and treat a wide range of gut ailments. Grind fennel seeds in a blender and add to your oatmeal or salads or wherever. You may drink fennel tea too.
3. Papaya
Papaya contains naturally occurring digestive enzyme called papain that treats and improves various types of digestive and abdominal disorders that includes indigestion, heartburn and constipation. Eat papaya on a daily basis or make a smoothie.
4. Onions
Onions contain inulin, which is a prebiotic that encourages the growth of healthy gut bacteria and protects the gut from pathogens. Load up on onions as much as you can. Eat it raw or cook it up.
5. Pineapple
Pineapple contains bromelain, which is a digestive enzyme that's especially powerful in protein digestion.

Some Delicious Shake That’ll Help You Sleep like a Baby

As more and more studies point to stress as one of the main causes of insomnia, it makes sense that we try to do everything in our power to calm our nerves and provide ourselves with a little more peace and relaxation. However, the stresses and anxieties that accompany everyday life make this a real challenge, which sometimes may feel like a "lost battle" for us.

The good news is that often the secret to achieving a quiet soul and a good sleep depends not only on our control of the myriad of thoughts running through our heads but also on our diet. The even better news is that you can achieve this goal in tasty and nutritious ways such as the next health shake, which you can add to your daily menu and start waking up refreshed every morning.

The shake ingredients that will help you sleep well and continuously
This wonderful shake can be easily prepared with the following ingredients available in every grocery store. The potency of the drink stems from their combination because each of them is commonly attributed to various functions that relax the body, help the processes of falling asleep and improve the digestion process, which can sometimes be the cause of the discomfort that prevents us from falling asleep and waking us up in the middle of the night.

Apples

are the kind of fruit that we usually eat at lunch or as a mid-morning snack to get our wheels turning, but you should try to incorporate them in the evening before going to bed. The reason for this is the vitamin C content of the apple, a vitamin that has been extensively studied and found to be effective in its ability to improve the production of a hormone called melatonin, a hormone that promotes good mood and has an important role in the body's process of falling asleep. Also, apples are rich in dietary fiber that facilitates the digestive process, which can sometimes cause us great discomfort.

Lettuce

Have you ever noticed a white liquid leaking out of your lettuce while cutting it? Well, this liquid is called Lactucarium. This ingredient has been known to have a calming effect on the nervous system of the body, an effect similar to that of the opium plant, only at lower levels and without harming the body. In addition, lettuce contains various dietary fibers that help improve digestion process and prevent discomfort that may interfere with continuous sleep at night.

Cucumbers

Insomnia is considered one of the many different symptoms that indicate a severe shortage of magnesium in our bodies. A wonderful way replenish our magnesium levels is by eating cucumbers and especially their peel, which is considered a good source of this mineral. Magnesium helps to promote the production of melatonin, a hormone that allows for a deeper and more relaxed sleep, and at the same time relaxes muscles and helps to calm the body.

Honey

The sweet taste of honey is not the only reason why it should be incorporated into our wonderful drink. For hundreds of years, honey has been associated with a calming effect on the body, with the explanation for its contribution to the production of sleep hormone melatonin - which we’ve already discussed its benefits. Besides, honey excels in maintaining glycogen levels, a polysaccharide produced in the liver which is a major energy source for the body. During sleep, the body’s glycogen levels decrease because we don’t eat at night, which may stimulate the brain to look for a restock of it, and honey has the ability to prevent this efficiently and naturally.

How to make the shake

Now that we’ve learned about the ingredients and their positive effect on our night's sleep, it is time to learn how to make the drink that will not only bring us a deep sleep but also enrich our daily menu with its nutritional value and wonderful taste.
Ingredients:
•   1 apple cut into quarters, cored and seeded
•   3 lettuce leaves
•   1 cucumber (not peeled)
•   1 cup water
•   1 tablespoon honey (raw and unprocessed honey)
•   1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
Preparation:
1. Put the water, honey, apple, cucumber, and lettuce into the blender.
2. Blend the ingredients for several seconds until a smooth and uniform mixture is obtained.
3. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to enrich the taste of the shake and blend again.
4. It is recommended to drink the shake about three hours before bedtime to really feel its effects.
