Want to end your misery of Spider’s veins?

Are you worried about those ugly looking Spider veins on your thighs, calves or legs? Do they cause pain or burning? Are they preventing you from wearing that favourite short dress of yours? Stop worrying right away! Spider veins are dilated veins that show up close to the skin’s surface and may resemble spider webs. Usually, they appear blue or red and are most common on the legs and face.  Almost 95 per cent of patients with spider veins are females. These veins are cosmetically disfiguring and can be a matter of concern.

Everything you need to know about the symptoms

However, due to lack of awareness and not many treatment options, many females tend to ignore them. In some cases, these spider veins too can cause symptoms such as pain, heaviness, burning or itching. They can progress to larger varicose veins too.

The causes
Spider veins occur in most people as a consequence of heredity, as often there is a strong family history of spider veins in parents or grandparents. But sometimes spider veins by their distribution and density will raise the possibility of venous hypertension from failed valves (incompetence) of superficial or deep veins of the leg. This may range from incompetent reticular veins to incompetent superficial veins such as the great saphenous vein, which courses deep in the fat and near the muscle of the leg.

This is how you can bid adieu to those grossly neglected spider veins
Cryo Laser and Cryo Sclerotherapy (CLaCS) recently introduced in India, is a revolutionary Brazilian technique for the treatment of spider veins of the legs.

What is CLaCS?
CLaCS is a combination of different technologies like augmented reality, transdermal laser, sclerotherapy and skin cooling for local anaesthesia. It was pioneered by Professor Dr Kasuo Miyake, a vascular surgeon from Brazil in 1999. Over the years, it has been used to treat thousands of patients with extremely good and long-lasting results.

The benefits of CLaCS
CLaCS is a painless procedure done under local anaesthesia. The high flow of ice-cold air directed onto the skin at the site of laser or needle application removes the discomfort and most patients have little pain from the treatment. The patient returns to work and usual activities with 4 -6 hrs. Exercise is permitted as well after 24 hrs.

Any precautions one needs to take after opting for it?
In CLaCS, there are no specific precautions after treatment. There is no need to wear stockings in the majority of cases.

Cheap Remedy For Removing Warts And Skin Tags Easily And Painlessly At Your Home

Warts and skin tags can be quite annoying, painless skin growths that develop anywhere on your body, particularly on those areas where we sweat the most.

Warts and skin tags are harmless; however, when irritated, they can bleed. It is usually an aesthetic issue for women who will do anything to get rid of it.

Skin tags share similar characteristics as warts, and usually appear in the areas where we seat and in the areas where the skin folds. Most common areas of our body where the skin tags develop are the neck, face and armpits.

As mentioned above, these skin issues are harmless but many chose to remove them because they don't look good.

How to get rid of skin tags and warts:

Apple cider vinegar has a variety of uses in alternative medicine. It is used in the treatment of many ailments, due to its powerful antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal qualities. These characteristics make ACV an excellent remedy for warts and skin tags.

The power of ACV

First, make sure you clean the skin area before you treat it with vinegar. Next, apply a few drops of apple cider vinegar on a cotton pad or Band-Aid and apply it directly on the skin tag or wart.

Remember to use new Band-Aid when you decide to repeat the procedure. You should see noticeable results within five days of starting the treatment.

In rare cases, the process needs to be practised longer than five days, so if you feel that after the initial period you see no signs of improvement, continue with the treatment for another five days.

Non-surgical therapy to treat brain tumors

Brain tumour is one of the most aggressive forms of malignant tumors and the survival period for a patient is mostly 14 months. Every year about 8,50,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in India, of which 5,80,000 cancers result in death. More than 60% of these affected patients are in the prime of their life between the ages of 35 and 65 years.

The standard treatment options of cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy which mostly result in partial cure with multiple side effects, deterioration of quality of life which further compounds the emotional and psychological distress associated with cancer patients.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is one of the most common type of brain tumors that are known to occur majorly in adults and also in children to some extent. Despite the variety of treatment options available today, malignant gliomas consistently remain a high-mortality disease characterized by a swift and disastrous clinical progression.

Sequentially Programmed Magnetic Field (SPMF) Therapy pioneered and patented by Dr. V G Vasishta have successfully saved and revived lives of over 500 brain tumor cancer patients. With SPMF Therapy, such patients have been treated successfully who have survived for more than five years on average.

SPMF is a unique type of treatment that is non-invasive and safe, painless, affordable, scientifically proven and most effective treatment for brain tumor. A patient’s condition is evaluated using MRI and the Karnofsky Performance Score (KPS) which are the gold standards for evaluating the efficacy of a therapy. This treatment is administered through an advanced medical device called AKTIS SOMA. This therapy is conducted over a 28-day period (one hour a day).

SPMF is a non-surgical treatment that helps degenerate cells in cancer. It has proved to be effective in the treatment of different types of cancer. This technology produces highly complex sequentially programmed magnetic fields, which are computer-controlled and can be precisely focused on to the target tissues with the help of laser guides.

No finger pricks – New breath analyser to monitor blood sugar

New hope for people with diabetes. Scientists have developed a new technology wherein a simple puff into a handheld device will be able to monitor blood sugar. The device will not only be painless, but also reusable- no finger pricks or expensive test strips.

The sensor device will work like a breath-analyzer, but rather than measuring alcohol, the sensor measures acetone to determine an individual's blood glucose level, according to the lead researcher.
" Acetone is a bio-marker for blood glucose level," explained a researcher.

Researchers began developing the sensor in 2015 through a  two-year grant .

To make the biosensor, the researchers used a technique called molecular imprinting to deposit a polymer layer onto graphene. " The 3D polymer has small cavities that are the same shape and size as acetone molecules," he said. " It works like a filter, allowing only acetone to get through and bind to the graphene".

" Human exhales breath contains more than 3,000 volatile organic compounds resulting from the body's metabolic pathways," he explained. " The sensor detects only acetone and ignores the others. The selectivity is very high".

When the acetone molecules attach to the graphene, it changes the material's electrical properties. " The amount of resistance in the graphene sensing layer changes based on the amount of acetone gas," he said. To test the sensor, he placed it in a chamber into which acetone gas was introduced for 3 seconds.

The sensor detects acetone levels ranging from 0.9 ppm to 10ppm. " The acetone concentrations in the breath of a non-diabetic range from 0.3 to 0.9 parts per million, however, in diabetes, those levels are higher," he explained. Additional electronic components will then convert the measurement to milligrams per deciliter, the standard blood glucometer reading.

Next, he will optimize the sensor's recovery time- how ling the user must wait before taking another reading. " My goal is to make it less than one minute", he said.

Once preliminary evaluations have been completed, the researchers will integrate the sensor into a prototype device that can be tested using human breath.

Researcher in-charge for commercialising project, envisions putting the breath sensor into a smartphone along with an app that enables users to effectively monitor and manage their blood glucose levels. " This new technology promises to be revolutionary".

" If we succeed, it's going to be ' wow'", he said. " This will make life easier for everyone with diabetes".

What to know about testicular cancer

Male sex hormones and sperm are produced in the testicles. Testicular cancer, or cancer of the testes, occurs in these organs.

Testosterone controls the development of the reproductive organs and other male physical characteristics.

Although testicular cancer is uncommon compared with other cancers (0.7 percent of all cancers), it is the most common cancer in males aged between 15 and 35 years in North America and Europe. Every year, 8,000 males in U.S. are diagnosed with testicular cancer, and 390 men die each year in the from the disease.

Facts on testicular cancer
Testicular cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in young men.
Common diagnoses include examination, blood tests, and ultrasounds.
Treatment is successful in 95 percent of men with testicular cancer.

Symptoms

Diagram of testicles with testicular cancer
Symptoms of testicular cancer do not normally appear until a later stage.
In most cases, the individual finds the cancer himself. Sometimes, it is discovered by doctors during a routine physical exam.

Anyone who notices anything unusual about their testicles should see a doctor, especially if they detect any of the following:
a painless lump or swelling in a testicle
pain in a testicle or scrotum
discomfort in a testicle or scrotum
a sensation of heaviness in the scrotum
a dull ache in the lower back, groin, or abdomen
a sudden accumulation of fluid in the scrotum
unexplained tiredness or malaise.
It is worth noting that these symptoms may not necessarily be caused by cancer. In fact, less than 4 % of lumps in the testicles are found to be cancerous. Individuals should not ignore a lump or swelling in the testicle, though. It is important to see a doctor. They can then determine the cause.
Even though testicular cancer can spread to the lymph nodes, it hardly ever travels to other organs. If the cancer does spread, a person may experience:
coughing
breathing difficulties
swallowing difficulties
swelling in the chest

Early signs

It is important to catch testicular cancer early to improve the chances for successful treatment.
The earliest signs that occur are a painless lump and swelling. The testicle may also seem to be larger than usual.
However, this type of cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms until a later stage. That is why self-examination is so important - it is often the only way to catch testicular cancer at an early stage.

Causes

Although scientists are not sure what the specific causes of testicular cancer are, there are some factors which may raise a man's risk of developing the disease. These risk factors include:

Cryptorchidism (undescended testicle): If a testicle has not moved down when a male is born, there is a greater risk that he will develop testicular cancer later on.

Congenital abnormalities: Males born with abnormalities of the penis, kidneys, or testicles.

Inguinal hernia: Males born with a hernia in the groin.

Having had testicular cancer: If a male has had testicular cancer, he is more likely to develop it in the other testicle, compared with a man who has never had testicular cancer.

Family history: A male who has a close relative with testicular cancer is more likely to develop it himself compared with other men.

Abnormal testicular development: Conditions, such as Klinefelter's syndrome, where the testicles do not develop normally, may increase a person's risk of testicular cancer.

Mumps orchitis: This is an uncommon complication of mumps in which one or both testicles become inflamed.

Ancestry: Testicular cancer is more common among Caucasian males, compared with men of African or Asian descent. The highest rates are found in Scandinavia, Germany, and New Zealand.
Having a vasectomy does not increase a man's risk of developing testicular cancer.

Treatment

Around 95 % of all men with testicular cancer make a full recovery after receiving treatment. The sooner a patient is diagnosed and treated, the better his prognosis is.
Treatment for testicular cancer may involve surgery,  radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination.

Surgery

Orchiectomy Orchiectomy is usually the first line of treatment. The testicle is surgically removed to prevent the tumour from spreading. If the patient is diagnosed and treated in stage 1, surgery may be the only treatment needed.
An orchiectomy is a straightforward operation. The patient receives a general anesthetic. A small incision is made in the groin, and the testicle is removed through the incision. The patient remains in hospital for a few days.
If the man still has one testicle after the operation, his sex life and chances of reproducing should not be affected.

Fertility If after the operation, the patient has no testicles, he will be infertile. He will not be able to produce sperm.
Males who wish to have children one day should consider banking their sperm before the operation - some sperm is kept in a sperm-bank before the testicle or testicles are removed.
Other testicular cancer therapies, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, can also affect a cancer patient's long-term fertility.

Lymph node surgery
If the cancer has reached the lymph nodes, they will need to be surgically removed. This usually involves the lymph nodes in the abdomen and chest. Sometimes lymph node surgery can result in infertility.

Radiation therapy

Radiotherapy involves the use of beams of high-energy X-rays or particles (radiation) to destroy cancer cells. Radiotherapy works by damaging the DNA inside the tumor cells, destroying their ability to reproduce.

Patients with seminoma testicular cancer will typically require radiotherapy as well as surgery. The radiotherapy is used to prevent cancer recurrence.

Patients whose cancer has spread to their lymph nodes will need radiation therapy. Radiation therapy may cause the following temporary side effects:
tiredness
rashes
muscle stiffness
joint stiffness
loss of appetite
nausea

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of chemicals (medication) to destroy cancer cells. Cytotoxic medication prevents cancer cells from dividing and growing.
Chemotherapy is usually given to patients with advanced testicular cancer - cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment is administered either orally (tablets by mouth) or injection. As chemotherapy attacks healthy cells as well as cancerous ones, the patient may experience the following temporary side effects:
nausea
vomiting
hair loss
mouth sores
tiredness
malaise
Most people immediately link chemotherapy with uncomfortable side effects. However, side-effect management has improved considerably over the last 20 years.

Diagnosis

There are several ways to diagnose testicular cancer.
Blood tests
These measure levels of tumor markers, such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). However, it is possible that blood tests come back normal, even though cancer is present.
Testicular ultrasound
An ultrasound of the scrotum can reveal the presence and also the size of a tumor.
Testicular biopsy
A small sample of tissue is taken from the targeted area in the testicle and examined under a microscope to determine whether the lump is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous).

Testicular cancer types

When the doctor has determined the type of testicular cancer the patient has, they can then devise a treatment plan and make a prognosis. There are two main types of testicular cancer:

Seminoma testicular cancer: These contain only seminoma cells. All age groups can get this type of cancer.

Non-seminoma testicular cancer: These may contain many different cancer cells. Non-seminoma tumors tend to affect younger patients and will spread more rapidly than seminoma ones.
Most testicular cancers start in the germ cells - the cells in the testicles that produce immature sperm. We don't know what causes those cells to become abnormal and cancerous. Sometimes, both types of cancers may be present. If this is the case, the doctor will use non-seminoma treatment.

Staging the cancer

After carrying out all the relevant tests, the doctor will then be able to stage the cancer. This helps determine what treatment to use.

Stage I: The cancer is only in the testis and has not spread.
Stage II: The cancer has reached the lymph nodes in the abdomen.
Stage III: The cancer has spread further, to other parts of the body. This could include the lungs, liver, brain, and bones.

Self-exam

The best time to check yourself is when the scrotal skin is relaxed; usually after a warm shower or bath.

Gently hold the scrotum in the palms of both hands. Stand in front of the mirror and look for any swelling on the skin of the scrotum.

Feel the size and weight of the testicles first.

With fingers and thumbs press around and be receptive to any lumps or unusual swellings. Some men have one testicle that hangs lower than the other. Some people have one testicle which is bigger than the other. This is normal.

Each check, try to detect any significant increase in the size or weight of the testicles.

Feel each testicle individually. Place the index and middle fingers under the testicle while your thumbs are on the top. Gently roll the testicle between the thumbs and the fingers - it should be smooth, oval-shaped, and somewhat firm. There should be no lumps or swellings. The top and back of each testicle should have a tube-like section where sperm is stored, known as the epididymis, which may be slightly tender. It is normal for it to feel tender.

Prevention

Preventing most cases testicular cancer is not possible, as the causes are largely unknown. Many men who develop testicular cancer do not have any known risk factors.
However, it is possible to make sure the cancer does not advance before treatment.

Weight Gain Or Tumour?

A California man is on the mend after having a 77-pound tumor removed from his abdomen that he thought was “just” a beer belly.

The man eventually went to the doctor this summer to get checked out. His friends teased him about his beer belly, even though he didn’t drink beer, and his stomach and weight didn’t seem to change when he exercised even though his arms were getting thinner, according to a news release from the hospital, where he sought care. His stomach was also hard.

He was eventually diagnosed with a retroperitoneal liposarcoma, a cancer that starts in the fat cells at the back of the abdomen. He eventually had the tumor removed in a complicated six-hour operation, and a week later, he was more than 100 pounds lighter.

He is hardly the first person to write off his unexplained weight gain only to later find out that it was due to a tumor. In May, an Alabama woman had a 50-pound ovarian cyst removed that she initially thought was just due to weight gain, according to report. The internet is filled with stories like these.

So, how can someone know if their weight gain is due to dietary or other issues versus a tumor? “It is not always easy,” says a cancer specialist. “But some clues that this might be something different than just [regular] weight gain is that the weight gain is asymmetric or happening very fast.”

This kind of tumor usually doesn’t cause pain, “but patients can notice a change in their bowel habits (usually more sluggish) and feeling full more quickly,” the Dr. says. “Also when lying down, they might notice feeling uncomfortable in certain positions or having a sensation of fullness on one side.” A person’s clothes may also not fit the way they used to and may be tighter on one side than the other, she says. “It is possible that if a tumor is large, it may cause pressure on the blood vessels to the legs and there can be fluid retention of the legs. One should be concerned especially if there is swelling in one leg and not the other,” she adds.

“There’s no way in terms of symptoms to definitively say ‘This is due to cancer and this is not,’”  a surgical oncologist says. “Any unexplained change in weight should be checked out.”

Of course, there could be many other reasons why you’re gaining weight, including a thyroid condition, so it doesn’t hurt to check in with your primary care physician for a workup if you’ve noticed ongoing unexplained weight gain. “I would also seek medical attention if you feel the weight is going on one side and not the other, or you notice you are feeling full more quickly and truly are eating less food but continue to gain weight,” the Dr. says. “The challenge is that many of these tumors can be slow growing, so changes may not be obvious.”

Regardless, if you notice that something might be off, “don’t let things with your body that seem odd to you go by,” the Dr. advises.

It is always best to seek medical advise the moment we notice something abnormal in us, may be food or bowel movements, can be speech, trouble swallowing. feeling full eating little, blood in urine/ stools , sudden blurred vision, and so on.

Researchers develop fast, non-contact method for early detection of breast cancer

A new "fast, painless and non-contact" way for early detection of breast cancer in women of all ages including pregnant or nursing has been developed by the researchers

The proposed technique makes use of infrared emission emanating from the breast to detect the hidden tumors at a very early stage with predefined thermal stimulus on the area under examination.
"Infrared Thermography (IRT) is a fast, painless, non-contact, and non-invasive imaging method, complementary to mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging methods for early diagnosis of breast cancer," Associate Professor, who is associated with the research said.

The widely used mammography has its limitations in detecting tumors, especially in a "dense breast", he said.

"Dense breasts have less fat and more gland tissue in comparison to the fatty breasts, which restricts mammography to detect tumors with confidence. Especially for the tumors situated in the gland region of the breast, due to the insignificant density variations between the gland and tumor regions, mammography fails to provide enough radiographic contrast between the tumor location and healthy region of the breast," he added.

The Prof. explained that this limits the applicability of mammography in the screening of dense breasts. "Also, mammography leads to discomfort to the patient and the exposure to harmful ionizing radiation further restricts its applicability. However, the present Active IRT technique outperforms the standard method of mammography by providing patient-friendly breast screening," he said.

The research titled "Applicability of active infrared thermography for the screening of human breast: a numerical study", has been published. In the new method, an external thermal stimulus (heat/cold) is applied over the breast under examination for creating significant temperature differences (2 to 3 degrees centigrade from the ambient breast temperature) over the normal and abnormal (tumor) regions over the breast.

Thermal waves generated due to applied heat stimulus diffuse into the breast and produce a similar temporal temperature distribution on the skin surface of the breast with a certain delay and amplitude. The presence of tumors inside the breast alters the heat flow resulting in temperature gradients over the surface. Further, phase and amplitude images are constructed using frequency and time-domain data analysis schemes for detecting the sub-surface tumors with improved contrast.
