Liver Damage Symptoms: Doctor Shares Signs Of The Disease You Can See On Your Feet

Your liver is one of the most important organs of the body and it is important that you take the necessary steps that prevents the organ from getting damaged. When the liver gets damaged, it cannot perform its functions which eventually can have an impact on your entire body. However, if you can spot liver damage in the early stages, necessary steps can be taken to prevent further damage.

The first step is to spot the symptoms of liver damage. The signs of the condition can be seen in different parts of the body, one of them being your feet. Dr Eric Berg, in a YouTube video, shared that the feet can be affected due to liver diseases. He said, “You can get a lot of clues by looking at certain parts of the body, especially the foot, to be able to understand what’s going on on the inside.”

Here are some signs of the signs of liver damage that you can spot on your feet.

Red and brown spots

Dr Breg said that this is a common symptom that’s seen in people with diabetes. However, if someone has cirrhosis or hepatitis or even a severe fatty liver, a lot of times the circulation is so bad in the lower part of their body you'll see these little red and like kind of a rust colour brown, maybe sometimes scaly little dots or pigments that look a little bit like a bruising.”

He added, “So the liver has a lot to do with the clotting factors, vitamin K and when you lose the liver function you can have a lot of things like bruising and discoloured spots in different parts of your body.”

Spider veins

These most commonly appear in the lower ankle but could occur anywhere in the body. Dr Berg said that this is a certain situation where the liver is no longer able to regulate oestrogen so we have this unregulated excessive amount of oestrogen that floats around the body and oestrogen tends to vasodilate and kind of create this vascular pooling effect of your blood.

He explained, “The problem with having this extra oestrogen is that extra oestrogen can then damage the liver and create things like even a fatty liver and problems with your bile duct which could lead to um gallstones.”

Dry cracked heels

When you have omega-3 deficiency, you tend to get dry and cracked heels. Dr Berg said, “The liver makes bile and bile helps you break down and absorb fat-soluble vitamins as well as fat-soluble nutrients like the omega-3 fatty acids. But with poor liver function, we don’t produce the amount of bile that we need to help to extract the omega-3 fatty acids.”

Itchy feet

Dr Berg says that itchy feet happens because the bile that’s produced by the liver is very very thickened. The bile then backs up into the liver and then backs into the blood. He said, “From the blood, it backs into the tissues and that can show up as itching. I know some people that have this unbearable itching [in their] feet [that] drives them crazy all night long but they're not making the connection. The problem is probably not in the foot, it's in the liver.”

Toenail issues

There are issues that can occur with the toenails with liver damage. According to Dr Berg, these are the five toenail issues; dystrophic nails, onychomycosis, leukonychia, onychorrhexis and a club nail.

Don’t Postpone a Doctor’s Visit If You Have These Symptoms

Liver disease is often under-diagnosed, mainly because the symptoms are often mild and vague.

The more apparent symptoms of liver disease are:

Abdominal pain, especially after eating fatty foods. For more on abdominal pain caused by liver damage an more, read our article Abdominal Pain Map.

Difficulty digesting food.

Nausea and vomiting.

At the same time, many people, especially the older generations, and people on many medications will suffer from some form of chronic liver disease, often unknowingly. To prevent that from happening to you, pay close attention to these 9 warning signs of liver disease.

1. Jaundice:
 symptoms of liver disease jaundice
Yellowing of the Skin and Eyes This symptom is a definite indication that something is seriously wrong with your liver. One of the main functions of your liver is blood filtration: your old blood is recycled in your liver and the side-product of that process is something called bilirubin.

Normally, this compound is excreted through the bile duct once it accumulates in the liver, but when your liver is malfunctioning, it can no longer filter out the bilirubin and it is accumulated in your skin and eyes, rendering them a yellow color.

2. Dark Colored Urine
If you noticed that your urine became very dark in color lately, it may be a symptom of liver disease. It can become any color starting from amber, to dark orange and brown, depending on what your normal urine color was initially and the severity of the liver problem.

The reason why this happens is the same bilirubin that causes jaundice that is not filtered out properly and gets into the urine. If you experience this symptom along with abdominal pain and other symptoms we mention here, you may want to check your liver.

3. Spider Veins on the Face and Upper Body
These are small red web-like formations on the skin that carry the scientific name of spider angiomas. They can occur on any part of the body and aren’t dangerous on their own.

4. Sudden and Unexpected Weight Loss
It is often a bad sign if you suddenly lose a significant amount of your weight without intending to do so. It can indicate infections, digestive problems, and liver disease as well.

So, if you lost more than 10% of your weight in a short period of time and experience some of the other symptoms that we mentioned, your liver might be struggling.

5. Itching Skin
One unexpected symptom of liver disease is skin itching with no apparent rash, allergy or other reason.

If you feel like you get super itchy, especially at night, it may be because toxins are flooding your skin since the liver can’t filter them out as it is supposed to.

6. A Swollen Belly
Ascites, or the accumulation of fluid in the belly, can be a result of several liver problems, especially cirrhosis.

Depending on the development of the symptom, it has different symptoms:

Mild ascites can cause discomfort, a feeling of heaviness in the belly and intolerance to exercise.

Ascites in its more advanced stages will cause significant swelling of the belly, pain, and shortness of breath because the fluid accumulating in the belly presses on the person’s internal organs and diaphragm.

7. Confusion
In very advanced stages, liver disease can manifest itself in the form of blurry vision, confusion, and difficulty memorizing and focusing on tasks due to changes in nervous connections. It may not strike you as a very serious symptom, but it is very debilitating and points to nerve damage.

If you experience these symptoms and other symptoms of liver disease, we highly recommend you to see a doctor because confusion is usually a severe symptom.

8. Feeling Constantly Tired and Depressed
 symptoms of liver disease fatigue
Fatigue is the formal definition of the symptom, but it manifests itself in chronic physical and mental tiredness and lack of motivation. It generally has a gradual onset and can be alleviated with rest.

If you experience fatigue often and without any known reason, it may be a sign of liver disease.

9. Skin Bruises Easily
Our livers usually produce blot-clotting proteins that protect our body from losing blood. When the liver is damaged, it starts producing less and less of these proteins, which can make your skin more prone to bruising and your wounds will heal slower.

If you experience severe bruising for no reason, it may be a sign your liver is sick.

Noninvasive Treatments For Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are rarely a medical concern, and they rarely need any treatment. But you do not need to tolerate them if they make you feel uncomfortable or less attractive.

What should you know about varicose veins?

Varicose veins are the enlarged, twisted, ropelike purplish vein that occurs on the surface of your skin. They often appear at the back of your legs due to the long-standing and walking periods.

Varicose veins occur when your valves become faulty, leading to the backward flow of blood. Over time the blood accumulates in your veins leading to the appearance of unsightly veins. In most cases, varicose veins are not a cause for alarm, and they rarely cause any symptoms. But they are painful, or you are uncomfortable with them, you can consult with your doctor about the available treatment options.

How are spider veins different from varicose veins?

Spider veins and varicose veins are forms of venous disease, but they are different. Spider veins are small, twisted, web-like veins that often appear on the face or behind the legs.

On the other hand, Varicose veins are large, ropelike veins that often bulge above the skin surface. Spider veins rarely cause any painful symptoms, but you can get treatment if they affect your self-confidence.

When should you inform your provider about varicose veins?

If you develop varicose veins, do not be alarmed because they are rarely a sign of severe health conditions, and they rarely cause any life-threatening symptoms. However, if you experience the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • Itching in the affected or surrounding veins
  •  Pain that deteriorates after standing or sitting for long
  • Skin discoloration on the surrounding area of the varicose vein
  • Muscle cramping, swelling, and throbbing in your legs

If you are also concerned about how these unsightly veins affect your physical appearance, you can also contact the professional team at The Vein Institute for treatment.

How should you prepare for your treatment?

There is not much to do in preparation for your appointment. Your provider may require you to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to avoid elevating the discomfort after the procedure.

If you are nervous about the treatment, inform the medical team beforehand so that they may use a mild sedative to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. You should also tell your provider if you are taking any supplements or medications, as these can trigger bruising at the treatment site.

How can you treat varicose veins?

Your treatment depends on how severe your varicose veins are. In most cases, Dr. Bhusri may recommend wearing compression stockings and raising your legs at certain intervals during the day. Additionally, taking short walks improves blood circulation, reducing the visibility of varicose veins.

However, if you have severe varicose veins, Dr. Bhusri may recommend advanced treatments such as VenaSeal, radiofrequency ablation, and sclerotherapy. These procedures seal the affected veins and redirect blood to healthier veins.

Signs Of Liver Problems Your Feet Are Telling You

9 Things Your Feet Can Tell You About Your Liver

via Dr. Eric Berg

1. Red and brown dots (usually in the lower leg) – This can mean poor circulation and can also be diabetes.

2. Spider veins or spider nevus – could be seen in cirrhosis. There is a building of a lot of estrogen in the liver.

Too much estrogen can affect the vascular system.

3. Cracked heels – This could be a vitamin B3 deficiency or an omega 3 fatty acid deficiency.

4. Itching in the bottom of the foot – A potential sign of a congested liver, or back up of fluids in the liver.

It can also be bile backing up, and a buildup of histamines.

5. Hot feet or bad odor – These are other potential symptoms of a liver problem. The liver can’t detoxify correctly. It is backing up through the skin.

6. Pitting edema – this is fluid back up, which is a common symptom of a liver problem.

7. Toenail fungus – People with liver problems can have a higher number of fungus growing in the body because of the imbalance of the flora in the gut.

8. White nail bed – This can be because of the poor circulation.

9. Side effects of medications

Potential causes of Liver Problems:

High sugar in the diet (High Fructose Corn Syrup)

Too much-cooked food

Low veggies in the diet

Excessive alcohol

Excessive protein
