Study finds improvements in survival rates for all cancers in young adults

A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, published by Oxford University Press, finds improvements in five-year survival rates for all cancers in young adults. For some cancers, however, there has been little improvement since the 1970s.

Over the past several decades, treatment of cancer in adolescents and young adults (people between age 15 and 39) has evolved significantly, leading to steady improvements in estimated survival rates.

Researchers here found that, among 282,969 five-year young adult cancer survivors, five-year mortality (from five through ten years after diagnosis) from all causes decreased from 8.3% among those diagnosed in 1975-1984 to 5.4% among those diagnosed in 2005-2011. However, for specific cancer types, including colorectal, bone, sarcomas, cervical/uterine, and bladder, there was little improvement in mortality over time. Researchers here found some reduction in late mortality in Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, central nervous system tumors, melanoma, breast cancer, and kidney cancer.

Some of the most obvious improvements in mortality over time were observed among young adult survivors of hematologic malignancies and central nervous system tumors, cancer types that are also predominant among children and have therefore been the focus of considerable cancer research in recent decades. Notably, the mortality rate among five-year young adult leukemia survivors dropped from over 25% to less than 5% between patients treated in the late 1970s and early 1980s and those treated more recently. Reductions in mortality over were also pronounced for survivors of lymphomas and central nervous system tumors, cancer types with some of the highest mortality rates. These findings show the impact of new treatments for patients with these cancers.

Although improvements in mortality rates have been more dramatic for children and older adults with cancer, findings from these reports indicate that early survival among young adults has improved steadily over the past several decades. Reported five-year survival gains likely reflect, in large part, the impact of advances in therapy for several of the most common cancers in young adults.

It is important that we monitor trends in survival not only among recently diagnosed patients, but also among survivors who are several years beyond their initial cancer diagnosis. There have been substantial improvements over the past several decades for five-year survivors, though some cancer types have not shared in these improvements. Survivors of these cancer types may therefore be priority groups for efforts to improve long-term surveillance to reduce late mortality from cancer among adolescents and young adults."      Chelsea Anderson, paper's lead author.

Try This Technique For Quick Weight Loss

Are you obese and worried about your excess weight? Are you tired of trying various ways to reduce and didn't succeed? Take heart. New research suggests that with irregular fasting and a strictly controlled diet, you can lose more weight and improve your health too. The study showed that women who fasted intermittently as well as restricted their food improved their health more than those who only restricted their diet or only fasted intermittently. Obese women who followed a diet in which they ate 70 per cent of their required energy intake and fasted intermittently lost the most weight.

"Continuously restricting their diet is the main way that obese women try to tackle their weight," said the lead author.

"This study is adding to evidence that intermittent fasting, at least in the short term, may provide better outcomes than daily continuous diet restriction for health and potentially for weight loss," added an Associate Prof.

By adhering to a strict pattern of intermittent fasting and dieting, obese women have achieved significant weight loss and improvements in their health such as decreased markers for heart disease, said the paper.

For the study, the researchers involved nearly 100 women aged between 35 and 70 who were overweight or obese.

They followed a typical Australian diet consisting of 35 per cent fat, 15 per cent protein and 50 per cent carbohydrate over 10 weeks.

Participants who fasted intermittently ate breakfast and then refrained from eating for 24 hours followed by 24 hours of eating. The following day they fasted again.

"While the study confirms that intermittent fasting is more effective than continuous diet restriction, the underlying signal for limiting people's appetite, which could hold the key to triggering effective weight loss, requires further research," the author noted.

To Be Mentally Healthy Eat a Low-Protein, High-Carb Diet

The key to a long life and a healthy brain, according to a study, is a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet. This study, shows improvements in overall health and brain health, as well as learning and memory, among mice fed an unrestricted low protein, high carbohydrate diet.

Lead author says, "There are currently no effective pharmaceutical treatments for dementia – we can slow these diseases, but we can't stop them – so it's exciting that we are starting to identify diets that are impacting how the brain ages."

For the first time, research shows that unrestricted low-protein, high carbohydrate diets have similar protective benefits for the brain as calorie restriction, which is known for its longevity benefits, but it is not sustainable in humans. "We have close to 100 years of quality research extolling the benefits of calorie restriction as the most powerful diet to improve brain health and delay the onset of neurodegenerative disease in rodents," says the author.

"However, the majority of people have a hard time restricting calories, especially in Western societies where food is so freely available. It shows a lot of promise that we have been able to replicate the same kind of gene changes in the part of the brain responsible for memory that we also see when we severely restrict calories."

According to Senior author, numerous cultures including those who live long lives in Okinawa in Japan, and many parts of the Mediterranean have long observed this mix. In Okinawa, around 9% of protein comes from lean fish, soy and plants, with very little beef. One of their main sources of carbohydrates is sweet potato.

In the current study, researchers fed the mice complex carbohydrates derived from starch and casein protein, which is found in cheese and milk. This assessed the brain benefits of the diet. The researchers focused on the hippocampus - this region of the brain is responsible for learning and memory. The Prof. says "The hippocampus is usually the first part of the brain to deteriorate with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. However, the low-protein high-carbohydrate diet appeared to promote hippocampus health and biology in the mice, on some measures to an even greater degree than those on the low-calorie diet."

This latest research follows a 2015 study  showed that a low protein, high carbohydrate diet could be just as effective as a low-calorie diet in promoting a long life in mice through good heart and digestive health.

Hypnotherapy can help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome

Hypnotherapy could help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), finds a study.  Hypnotherapy might help relieve irritable bowel syndrome complaints for some patients for as long as 9 months after the end of treatment, according to a randomised controlled trial of 354 adults with IBS in primary and secondary care.

After 3 months of treatment, adequate relief of IBS symptoms was reported by more patients who received individual (40 per cent; 41/102 for whom data were available) and group hypnotherapy (33 per cent; 31/91) than that given education and supportive care (17 per cent; 6/35), and these benefits persisted at 9 months follow-up (42 per cent [38/91], 50 per cent [40/80], and 22 per cent [7/31]).
Importantly, the findings suggest that group hypnotherapy is as effective as individual sessions, which could enable many more patients with IBS to be treated at a reduced cost.

The study is the largest randomised trial of hypnotherapy for IBS to date, and one of the first conducted in primary care, where the vast majority of IBS patients are treated.

The study found that IBS patients undergoing hypnotherapy reported a greater overall improvement in their condition and were more able to cope with, and were less troubled by their symptoms compared with those who received educational supportive therapy. However, hypnotherapy did not appear to reduce the severity of symptoms.

"Our study indicates that hypnotherapy could be considered as a treatment option for patients with IBS, irrespective of symptom severity and IBS subtype," said a Dr., who led the research. "It is also promising to see that group hypnotherapy is as effective as individual sessions, which may mean that more people could be treated with it at lower cost, should it be confirmed in further studies."

"What's striking about these findings is the extent to which patient's perception of their illness has an effect on their suffering, and that their perception of symptoms appears to be as important as actual symptom severity."

A 10-week running program can help you to quit smoking

Having difficulty in quitting smoking? Try Running as it can help you refrain. As per a recent report, almost half of people who completed a 10-week program involving running were able to successfully quit smoking. A postdoctoral fellow said, “This shows that physical activity can be a successful smoking-cessation aid and that a community-based program might offer that. Because doing it on your own is very difficult.” In Canada, 178 smokers registered for the 2016 ‘Run to Quit’ program at Running Room stores, and 72 of them stuck it out until the final week, when 37 participants had their claims of quitting verified by carbon-monoxide testing.

The number of successful quitters held up during follow-up interviews six months later. The group that finished the program also included 91 per cent who reported reducing their smoking. Participants attend sessions with running instruction, strategies for quitting smoking, outdoor walking or running component that progressed toward a 5km run and the program also access phone counseling via the national quit-smoking line. Coaches received training from researchers in administering questionnaires. They use a tool to measure carbon monoxide in participants’ breath. Researchers revealed significant improvement in participants’ mental health and their average carbon monoxide level also decreased by about one-third during the program.

The lead author of the study said, “Even if someone wasn’t able to fully quit, reducing their smoking is great.” “But it’s also about just being active. Most of our sample was new to running, and if it’s something that can become part of their lifestyle then there are health benefits that may counteract some of their smoking behaviour,” she added. “In the future what we’re really trying to stress to participants is to just keep coming — even if you don’t quit on your first attempt, keep attending the sessions with the group and keep learning,” she further said.

Walnuts may contribute to brain health

The value of fruits and vegetables to prevent cardiovascular diseases and cancer has been ingrained in us.

Now, two recent studies emphasize the inclusion of a daily dose of nuts.
Walnuts, specifically.

Researchers say snacking or perking up a meal with them may improve cognitive function and prevent Alzheimer's disease.

The first study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, was led by Dr. Abha Chauhan, a biochemist who is head of the Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory at the state Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities in Willowbrook.

The study found significant improvement in learning skills, memory, reducing anxiety and motor development in mice fed a walnut-enriched diet.

"These findings are very promising and help lay the groundwork for future human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer's disease — a disease for which there is no known cure," said Chauhan.

The research suggests that the high antioxidant content of walnuts may have been a contributing factor in protecting the mouse brain from the degeneration typically seen in Alzheimer's disease.

In addition to numerous vitamins and minerals, walnuts are the only nut that contains a significant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid credited with heart and brain-health benefits.

A second study out of the University of California-Los Angeles further extended the body of research. It found that study participants with higher walnut consumption performed significantly better on a series of six cognitive tests.

If you're wondering how many hours a day you are going to need to shell walnuts in order to make a difference, there is more good news: All that is needed is a handful a day.
