Study finds improvements in survival rates for all cancers in young adults

A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, published by Oxford University Press, finds improvements in five-year survival rates for all cancers in young adults. For some cancers, however, there has been little improvement since the 1970s.

Over the past several decades, treatment of cancer in adolescents and young adults (people between age 15 and 39) has evolved significantly, leading to steady improvements in estimated survival rates.

Researchers here found that, among 282,969 five-year young adult cancer survivors, five-year mortality (from five through ten years after diagnosis) from all causes decreased from 8.3% among those diagnosed in 1975-1984 to 5.4% among those diagnosed in 2005-2011. However, for specific cancer types, including colorectal, bone, sarcomas, cervical/uterine, and bladder, there was little improvement in mortality over time. Researchers here found some reduction in late mortality in Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, central nervous system tumors, melanoma, breast cancer, and kidney cancer.


Some of the most obvious improvements in mortality over time were observed among young adult survivors of hematologic malignancies and central nervous system tumors, cancer types that are also predominant among children and have therefore been the focus of considerable cancer research in recent decades. Notably, the mortality rate among five-year young adult leukemia survivors dropped from over 25% to less than 5% between patients treated in the late 1970s and early 1980s and those treated more recently. Reductions in mortality over were also pronounced for survivors of lymphomas and central nervous system tumors, cancer types with some of the highest mortality rates. These findings show the impact of new treatments for patients with these cancers.

Although improvements in mortality rates have been more dramatic for children and older adults with cancer, findings from these reports indicate that early survival among young adults has improved steadily over the past several decades. Reported five-year survival gains likely reflect, in large part, the impact of advances in therapy for several of the most common cancers in young adults.

 It is important that we monitor trends in survival not only among recently diagnosed patients, but also among survivors who are several years beyond their initial cancer diagnosis. There have been substantial improvements over the past several decades for five-year survivors, though some cancer types have not shared in these improvements. Survivors of these cancer types may therefore be priority groups for efforts to improve long-term surveillance to reduce late mortality from cancer among adolescents and young adults."      Chelsea Anderson, paper's lead author.

What Is Burkitt Lymphoma?

Burkitt lymphoma is a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a  type that primarily affects the body's lymphatic system.

The condition is often seen in children in the sub-Saharan Africa where it is commonly associated with Epstein-Barr Virus and malaria. However, the condition has also been observed outside of Africa where it is then associated with a compromised immune system.

The symptoms of Burkitt lymphoma may vary depending on the type, whether it is sporadic, endemic, or immunodeficiency-related. These types are classified based on the geographical location of the patient, as well as the part of the body that is affected by the disease.

Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma mostly affects the lower abdomen where the small intestine ends and the big intestine begins. It is often associated with EBV and while it does occur out of Africa, such cases are quite rare. Its symptoms include abdominal swelling, distortion of facial bones, obstruction in the intestines, night sweats, enlarged thyroid, and enlarged tonsils.

Endemic lymphoma is also often seen in Africa and is commonly associated with EBV and malaria. It often affects the facial and jaw bone, but may also affect the kidneys, breasts, small intestine, and ovaries. Its symptoms include swelling, facial bone distortion, and rapid lymph node growth. This type of tumor may grow so rapidly that it may sometimes grow twice its size in less than 24 hours.
Lastly, the immunodeficiency type of Burkitt lymphoma is linked with the use of immunosuppressive drugs such as the ones used to prevent transplant rejection and to treat HIV and AIDS. Its symptoms are similar to sporadic Burkitt lymphoma.

Burkitt Lymphoma Treatment

Burkitt lymphoma is often treated with a combination chemotherapy and radiation, but those with intestinal blocking may require surgery. In Burkitt lymphoma patients, the chemotherapy drugs are injected directly into the spinal fluid to prevent cancer from spreading to the central nervous system, and those who get this treatment often have the best outcomes.

This New Blood Test Can Detect 2 of the Most Common Cancers

Any doctor will tell you: Detecting cancer early can make all the difference in saving lives. Now, in a promising study, researchers report that they used a new blood test involving infrared scanning to diagnose two types of cancer—lymphoma and melanoma—at incredibly early stages.

The researchers used a technology called infrared spectroscopy to scan blood samples from mice with lymphoma and melanoma cancers. They were able to spot distinctive biomarkers for the cancers in the infected mice’s blood samples, suggesting that infrared spectroscopy has the potential to one day be used as a screening technique for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and melanoma—which happens to be the deadliest form of skin cancer and a compleiing reason to continue using sunscreen, even in winter.

Using this type of diagnosis would be exceedingly more affordable than current diagnostics, which include very costly tissue examination and biopsy (often only partially covered by insurance, if at all). Melanoma is on the rise among fair-skinned people; non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma accounts for four percent of new cancer cases in the United States.

“Our final goal is to say we can use this infrared technique to identify various diseases,” said a researcher. “This study shows infrared spectroscopy can identify cancer. Right now, when you go to the doctor, they do blood tests for sugar and several other things, but not for serious diseases like cancer and colitis. One day, we hope that even these serious diseases can be rapidly screened.”
While we’re still a ways away from having a human application for this type of cancer screening, this promising study shows a way to get there. In the meantime, let’s all do our best to stay healthy.

Aspartame Has Been Linked to Various Cancers

As little as one diet soda a day may increase the risk of leukemia in men and women, and myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to results from the longest-ever running study on whether aspartame is a carcinogen in humans.
The World's Most Thorough Study on Aspartame
This study analyzed data for a period of 22 years. 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, giving a total of 2,278,396 person-years (the number of participants in the study times the amount of time each person spends in the study). Apart from its sheer size, what makes this study superior to previous studies is the detail in which aspartame intake was assessed.
Every two years, each participant was given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and they had their diets reassessed every four years. Previous studies, which found no link between aspartame and cancer only assessed the participants' aspartame intake at one period in time, which significantly reduces the accuracy of the study.
The results of this new study showed that one 12-fl oz. can of diet soda a day leads to:
  • 42% higher leukemia risk in men and women.
  • 102% higher multiple myeloma risk in men only.
  • 31% non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk in men only.
The reason why only men showed an increased risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma is unknown. Diet soda is the leading dietary source of aspartame in some countries. Every year, Americans consume 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, and 4,500 tons of this is from diet sodas.
Previous Research on Animals 
This study shows the importance of quality research. The majority of the past studies that have shown no link between aspartame and certain cancers have been heavily criticized for being too short and for ignoring long-term aspartame intake. This study solves both of those problems.
The fact that this study also produced a positive link between aspartame and different types of cancer is really not that surprising considering that a previous best-in-class study carried out in 2006 on 900 rats, over their entire lifespan, showed strikingly similar results; aspartame significantly increased the risk of male and female rats getting lymphomas and leukemia.
What is, perhaps, more worrying is the follow-up study, which looked into the effects of aspartame exposure on rats during their fetal stage. Increased leukemia and lymphoma risks were found and, this time, female rats had an increase in breast cancer rates. This raises a very daunting question: will future, high-quality studies uncover links between aspartame and the other cancer types it has been implicated with (brain, prostate, and breast)?
There is now more reason than ever to avoid aspartame in our diets. For those of you who think going back to sugary sodas is a "healthier" alternative, this study had a surprising finding: men who consume one or more sugary sodas a day have a 66% increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (which is even worse than that for diet soda). Therefore, perhaps the best soda is no soda at all.

The US Food and Drug Administration state that aspartame is safe for consumption, despite the fact that 85% of complaints reported through their agency are adverse reactions to aspartame (including 5 deaths).

  • Nausea
  • Heart palpitations

Aspartame's components (aspartic acid, methanol, and phenylalanine) are to blame. The latter has been synthetically altered so that it is able to carry a methyl group, which gives aspartame its sweet taste. This phenylalanine methyl bond allows the methyl group on the phenylalanine to break off easily and form methanol.
In fruits and vegetables, methanol is bound to a fiber called pectin and this allows it to pass safely throughout the digestive system. However, in aspartame's case, the methanol is not bound to anything that helps eliminate it from our body. Therefore, the methanol is converted by the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme into formaldehyde, which can wreak havoc on your body. All animals, apart from us human beings, have the natural ability to break down methanol into safe formic acid.

New Blood Test Can Diagnose Two Cancer Types

Scientists have developed a blood test using infrared spectroscopy that may diagnose two types of cancer, lymphoma and melanoma.
The findings, suggest infrared spectroscopy can detect biochemical changes induced by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a solid tumorous condition of the immune system, and subcutaneous melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.


 The technique has diagnostic potential as a screening technique for these cancers, according to researchers.

They used mid-infrared spectroscopy to analyse blood serum derived from experimental mice and differentiate mice with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and subcutaneous melanoma from healthy mice and also between these two tumorous conditions.
The mid-infrared spectral region of the electromagnetic spectrum is frequently used to characterise biological samples at the molecular level.

Studies have found the incidence rates of cutaneous melanoma have increased in many regions and populations over the last decade, specifically three to seven per cent per year among fair-skinned populations, researchers said.

The available diagnostic regimen for both cancers, which includes tissue examination and biopsy, is time-consuming, invasive and costly, resulting in small compliance rates of eligible populations for cancer pre-screening.

Developing a rapid and reliable pre-screening strategy for melanoma and lymphoma is critical because early diagnosis and treatment of these malignancies improve the patients' chances of survival.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) sampling mode provides high-quality results with better reproducibility compared to other vibrational spectroscopy.

It has attracted scientists' attention for its rapid and reliable detection of various health conditions using body fluid samples.

"Our final goal is to say we can use this infrared technique to identify various diseases," said a researcher.

The researchers used mice with lymphoma and melanoma cancers. Blood serum droplets extracted from cancerous mice and control mice were placed on an ATR crystal of the FTIR instrument.

Incident infrared beams were absorbed and reflected by the serum, creating a wave that was recorded and used to produce an absorbance curve with peaks that identified the presence of certain bio-markers in the sample.

The researchers compared the absorbance curves from the control and tumorous mice and assessed biochemical changes induced by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and subcutaneous melanoma in the serum samples obtained from the research lab.

The study found remarkable differences between the ATR-FTIR spectra of serum samples from tumour-bearing mice with melanoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and healthy, control mice.

The findings are applicable to humans because mice and humans have some bio-markers and chemicals in common, the researcher said.
