To Be Mentally Healthy Eat a Low-Protein, High-Carb Diet

The key to a long life and a healthy brain, according to a study, is a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet. This study, shows improvements in overall health and brain health, as well as learning and memory, among mice fed an unrestricted low protein, high carbohydrate diet.

Lead author says, "There are currently no effective pharmaceutical treatments for dementia – we can slow these diseases, but we can't stop them – so it's exciting that we are starting to identify diets that are impacting how the brain ages."

For the first time, research shows that unrestricted low-protein, high carbohydrate diets have similar protective benefits for the brain as calorie restriction, which is known for its longevity benefits, but it is not sustainable in humans. "We have close to 100 years of quality research extolling the benefits of calorie restriction as the most powerful diet to improve brain health and delay the onset of neurodegenerative disease in rodents," says the author.

"However, the majority of people have a hard time restricting calories, especially in Western societies where food is so freely available. It shows a lot of promise that we have been able to replicate the same kind of gene changes in the part of the brain responsible for memory that we also see when we severely restrict calories."

According to Senior author, numerous cultures including those who live long lives in Okinawa in Japan, and many parts of the Mediterranean have long observed this mix. In Okinawa, around 9% of protein comes from lean fish, soy and plants, with very little beef. One of their main sources of carbohydrates is sweet potato.

In the current study, researchers fed the mice complex carbohydrates derived from starch and casein protein, which is found in cheese and milk. This assessed the brain benefits of the diet. The researchers focused on the hippocampus - this region of the brain is responsible for learning and memory. The Prof. says "The hippocampus is usually the first part of the brain to deteriorate with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. However, the low-protein high-carbohydrate diet appeared to promote hippocampus health and biology in the mice, on some measures to an even greater degree than those on the low-calorie diet."

This latest research follows a 2015 study  showed that a low protein, high carbohydrate diet could be just as effective as a low-calorie diet in promoting a long life in mice through good heart and digestive health.

Importance Of Oral Health

It is imperative to take good care of your oral health; so if you brush your teeth daily and ensure a healthy oral hygiene, it means that you could be at a lower risk of suffering from oral health problems. According to a study published, taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is a worthy goal even at old age. It is because oral health problems are linked to greater risks of developing frailty in older adults. It is not just for older adults, but for everyone oral health is very important, as our mouth being in close proximity to our brain and with so many blood vessels are connected and also nerves, any infection in the mouth, spreads quickly to the brain. So, never wait for long to attend to your dental problems, especially those with diabetes, have to take more precaution. Don't want to scare anyone, but know a gentleman, whose oral health was so poor, that he left it unattended for quite some time, the infection spread to the brain leading to his death.

The presence of oral health problems is associated with greater risks of being frail and developing frailty in older age. For the study, researchers analysed 1,622 older men with complete tooth loss, dry mouth and cumulative oral health problems. The results indicated that frailty was independent of socioeconomic factors and comorbidities.

The findings suggest that identifying and treating poor oral health condition in older people could be more important in preventing frailty. Frailty is a common clinical syndrome in older adults. It is considered to be same as disability, which increases the risk of poor health in old people like falls and disability that can lead to hospitalisation and in some cases may prove to be fatal too.

Here's how you can take care of your oral health naturally, even in old age-
1. Apple
Apples are a great source of fiber that act as a cleansing agent. It also contains malic acid that boosts saliva production that removes bacteria from your mouth.
2. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are slightly abrasive in texture and therefore, help in removing plaque and stains from your teeth.
3. Vitamin C foods
The high amount of vitamin C found in oranges, berries and lemons can help prevent plaque and further protect gums from infections.
4. Milk
The calcium present in teeth can fortify your teeth and make it stronger. The protein casein helps reduce acid levels in the mouth thereby reducing gum corrosion.
