Pineal gland and the 3rd eye connection

Several spiritual philosophies contain the notion of an inner 3rd eye, related to the pineal gland, to which is attributes significance in mystical awakening or enlightenment, higher states of consciousness and extrasensory perception (ESP). Mention of this is found in ancient Central and East Asia and also in contemporary metaphysical theories relating to yoga.

A neurologist in Jaipur claims to have found new evidence throwing light on interactions between a physical brain and a non-physical consciousness which leave an impact on human thought, emotion and behaviour. These psychic phenomena are linked with the 3rd eye, he says.

Dr. Ashok Panagariya, recipient of the prestigious B.C. Roa Award, says that the studies on the 2 functional units of brain and consciousness and new understanding of psychic phenomena may lead humankind to the ability to induce ESP at will. Pineal gland studies hold a great futuristic link between human and superhuman experiences.

Pineal gland, being the only singular structure in the brain and having a strategic position between the 2 halves , is believes to connect between intellect and the body. This 3rd eye could be activated to spiritual world frequencies, enabling  a person to have the sense of all knowing, godlike euphoria and oneness all around him, says the Dr.

Once tuned into proper frequencies with the help of meditation, yoga or various esoteric and occult methods, pineal gland can also enable a person to travel into other dimensions, popularly known as astral travel, cosmological projection or remote viewing.

Dr. Panagariya, has pointed out that the recent developments in parapsychology and neuroscience have revealed new clues about the way ESP and other psychic abilities are processed by the brain. " Science is providing some answers about the structure or physiology of brain which makes parapsyhcological reception possible."

"The most astounding discovery of all is that the brain produces a parapsychology enhancing neurotransmitter," says the Dr. while referring to a class of substances known as beta-carbolines which are secreted from the pineal gland. He says this neurochemical is only produced at night and breaks down into melatonin, another substance which has been associated with psychic experiences.

The Dr. has in his study referred to another recent discovery of interest to psychic researchers proving that the human brain contains magnetite ( ferrous oxide), which renders the brain sensitive to the Earth's magnetic fields.

" It has long been known that birds and other animals use magnetite in their brains to aid in navigation. Magnetite is especially concentrated in the pineal gland and the temporal lobes", says the Dr., offering scientific explanation to the spiritual, mystical and paranormal experiences.

Doctors Restore Consciousness in Man Who Spent 15 Years in a Vegetative State

For the first time, doctors have used a type of nerve stimulation device to restore consciousness in a patient who spent 15 years in a vegetative state due to brain injury.

The man showed significant improvements in movement and attention after just one month, and this exciting case study could become a starting point for new treatments for patients with similar injuries.
Unlike a coma, in which a person is asleep and unresponsive, a patient in a vegetative state is awake, but shows no signs of awareness or cognitive function, even though they can have basic reflexes like blinking when startled.

Sometimes people can transition from a complete vegetative state to what's known as a minimally conscious state (MCS), in which patients have at least a tiny bit of awareness of their surroundings.
But when a person has been in a vegetative state for more than 12 months after a traumatic brain injury, they are deemed to be in that state permanently and are highly unlikely to ever recover.

The patient in question was a 35-year-old man who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident and had been in a vegetative state ever since, for 15 years.

The team used a medical implant that stimulates the vagus nerve, one of the most important nerves linking the head to the rest of the body. Shaped like flat, round batteries, vagus nerve stimulators (VNS) are sometimes called "pacemakers for the brain" and are used in treating epileptic seizures.

It wasn't just a random guess that this device might help a patient in a vegetative state - doctors worked from a hypothesis based on previous research that showed improvements in patients with MCS when they got stimulation to the thalamus, a brain centre involved in coordinating sensory signals.

The vagus nerve serves as a direct link to the thalamus (among other brain areas), and vagus nerve stimulation has previously shown to increase metabolism in that part of the brain, so the team wanted to test what would happen if they used a VNS implant in a vegetative state patient.

The doctors measured the patient's behaviour in response to stimulus, and recorded an electroencephalogram (EEG) and PET scans of his brain before implanting the stimulator, and then again afterwards.

Then they gradually increased the intensity of the stimulation. After just one month - once the electric current in the device reached 1 milliampere, the patient started showing consistent improvements  "in general arousal, sustained attention, body motility and visual pursuit."

For the first time in 15 years, he showed consistent, measurable signs of consciousness. And that's huge - according to the doctors, their patient transitioned from a vegetative to a minimally conscious state.
"The man began responding to simple orders that had been impossible before. For example, he could follow an object with his eyes and turn his head upon request," the team reports in a press statement.
"His mother reported an improved ability to stay awake when listening to his therapist reading a book."

And it wasn't just behavioural improvements, either - both EEG findings and a PET scan confirmed there was consistent, sustained activity in parts of the brain that are deemed to be markers of consciousness.

As the team writes in their report, their unique findings directly contradict the general assumption that spending 12 months or longer in a vegetative state makes the condition irreversible.

"Brain plasticity and brain repair are still possible even when hope seems to have vanished," says lead researcher.

But we have to remember that one exciting case study doesn't make for a new treatment just yet. It's really early days, as we only have data for one patient so far, but we must admit the results sound promising.

The team is now planning to use this case study as a starting point for a larger trial investigating how VNS might be used as a therapy for such patients.

'On-off' switch can help coma patients come to life

Do you know there is an "on-off" switch in our brain that controls consciousness? Scientists have found one that can help coma patients regain consciousness.

Researchers at George Washington University made an epileptic patient go to sleep by applying an electrical impulse in a specific brain region.

After they stopped the stimulation, the patient came out of coma and had no memory of what had just happened.

"It is like the ignition of a car when turning a key can bring all the other components of the car to life," Mohamad Koubeissi from George Washington University was quoted as saying.

The effect was produced by stimulating the patient's claustrum - a thin sheet of neutrons at the lower part of the central brain.

Once stimulation of the claustrum stopped, the patient regained consciousness.

Koubeissi found that low-frequency stimulation reduced epileptic seizures in patients by 92 percent without impairing memory.

The discovery of the switch could be very useful in certain areas of medicine, said the study reported by New Scientist.

Diabetes management during fasting is a must

People with diabetes have high risk of developing fasting-related complications during Ramzan. Although doctors advise against fasting and feasting for diabetics, some people insist on doing it. The best way to do this is by getting medically assessed before the the fasting month.
The American Diabetes Association recommendations for management of diabetes during Ramzan state that it is important to seek medical advice and undergo a pre-Ramzan assessment. Doctors advise that type 1 diabetics (insulin-dependent) should not fast.
City-based endocrinologists say changes in eating patterns experienced during Ramazan can put people with type 2 diabetes (those who have insulin resistance) at the risk of complications such as low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), diabetic ketoacidosis, thrombosis  and dehydration. Endocrinologist  says the risk of hypoglycaemia in type 2 diabetics who fast is because of decreased food intake apart from certain medications. Symptoms of hypoglycaemia include sweating, dizziness, hunger and irritability.
“If left untreated, hypoglycaemia could lead to serious medical problems including loss of consciousness, convulsions or seizures,” she adds.
Diabetologist  says type 2 diabetics should monitor their blood sugar frequently during Ramzan. “Tailored management of diabetes including treatment changes could help minimise the risks associated with fasting,” Dr.  says.
Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator , says diabetics on fast could get dehydration or excessive loss of body fluid because of limited fluid intake.
“It is important to know what to eat if you are a diabetic and are fasting. It is advisable to eat chapatti, ragi balls and cereal-based combinations during sehri. Apart from taking care to have a balanced meal and not straying away from the diabetic diet, the iftar should be split into two snacks and a meal. While breaking the fast, dates should be replaced by fruits. Non-vegetarian food and oily/fried food should be avoided,” she adds.

SEIZURES- DO'S AND DON'TS

Seizures or fits are sudden jerky movements or stiffening of the body caused due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can also present as sudden brief staring episodes or sudden loss of consciousness. Seizures are not communicable, i.e. they cannot spread from person to person.
When a person suffers from recurrent episodes of seizures, it is called epilepsy. These may occur at different intervals. With proper medical advice and medication, the frequency can be reduced. A person suffering from epilepsy should avoid operating heavy machinery, going near water bodies, driving, handling fire.

Causes
Head injury
Low blood sugar
Lack of oxygen  (Hypoxia)
Stroke in elderly
High grade fever (in children from six months to six years)
Brain tumour or infection)
In children less than four years high-grade fever can lead to
febrile seizures.

Symptoms
Shaking of the body due to the repeated contraction and relaxation of muscles.
The body may become rigid.
Sudden falling.
Clenching of jaw.
Drooling or frothing at the mouth.
Eyeballs roll upwards
Loss of bowel and bladder control.

Warning signs
Fear or anxiety.
Nausea
Vertigo
Visual symptoms (flashing or bright lights, spots or wavy lines before the eyes.)

Do’s
Stay with the person until the seizure stops naturally.
If the person is falling, try to break the fall.
Clear the area around and remove potentially dangerous items.
Place soft padding under his/her head.
Loosen clothing around the neck to help him/her breathe
more easily.
When the seizures end, turn the patient gently into the
recovery position to keep the airway clear.
Reassure the patient as consciousness returns as he/she
may be disoriented.
In case of a child with febrile seizures try to reduce
temperature by tepid sponging and seek immediate medical
attention.

Don’ts:
Do not restrain the patient. You cannot stop the seizures.
Do not place anything in the patient’s mouth.
Do not move the patient unless he/she is in danger or near
something hazardous.
Do not give the patient anything to eat and drink until
the seizures stop and the patient is fully awake and alert.
Do not force the patient to smell a shoe, socks or onion!
These are myths and do not help at all.
Do not rely on quacks to cure the seizures with miracle
mantras.
