Childhood Diet Has Lifelong Impact – You Are What You Eat AND What You Ate as a Child

Effects of unhealthy food followed young mice into adulthood.

Eating too much fat and sugar as a child can alter your microbiome for life, even if you later learn to eat healthier, a new study in mice suggests.

The study by UC Riverside researchers is one of the first to show a significant decrease in the total number and diversity of gut bacteria in mature mice fed an unhealthy diet as juveniles.

“We studied mice, but the effect we observed is equivalent to kids having a Western diet, high in fat and sugar and their gut microbiome still being affected up to six years after puberty,” explained UCR evolutionary physiologist Theodore Garland. 

A paper describing the study has recently been published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

The microbiome refers to all the bacteria as well as fungi, parasites, and viruses that live on and inside a human or animal. Most of these microorganisms are found in the intestines, and most of them are helpful, stimulating the immune system, breaking down food and helping synthesize key vitamins. 

In a healthy body, there is a balance of pathogenic and beneficial organisms. However, if the balance is disturbed, either through the use of antibiotics, illness, or unhealthy diet, the body could become susceptible to disease. 

In this study, Garland’s team looked for impacts on the microbiome after dividing their mice into four groups: half fed the standard, ‘healthy’ diet, half fed the less healthy ‘Western’ diet, half with access to a running wheel for exercise, and half without. 

After three weeks spent on these diets, all mice were returned to a standard diet and no exercise, which is normally how mice are kept in a laboratory. At the 14-week mark, the team examined the diversity and abundance of bacteria in the animals.

They found that the quantity of bacteria such as Muribaculum intestinale was significantly reduced in the Western diet group. This type of bacteria is involved in carbohydrate metabolism

Analysis also showed that the gut bacteria are sensitive to the amount of exercise the mice got. Muribaculum bacteria increased in mice fed a standard diet who had access to a running wheel and decreased in mice on a high-fat diet whether they had exercise or not. 

Researchers believe this species of bacteria, and the family of bacteria that it belongs to, might influence the amount of energy available to its host. Research continues into other functions that this type of bacteria may have. 

One other effect of note was the increase in a highly similar bacteria species that were enriched after five weeks of treadmill training in a study by other researchers, suggesting that exercise alone may increase its presence.

Overall, the UCR researchers found that early-life Western diet had more long-lasting effects on the microbiome than did early-life exercise. 

Garland’s team would like to repeat this experiment and take samples at additional points in time, to better understand when the changes in mouse microbiomes first appear, and whether they extend into even later phases of life. 

Regardless of when the effects first appear, however, the researchers say it’s significant that they were observed so long after changing the diet, and then changing it back. 

The takeaway, Garland said, is essentially, “You are not only what you eat, but what you ate as a child!”

Treatment for lower back pain now in your hands

“Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but instead of needles, the pressure is applied with a finger, thumb or device to specific points on the body,” said an associate professor of physical medicine, rehabilitation  and lead author of the study. She said that while acupressure has been previously studied and found to be beneficial in people with cancer-related or osteoarthritis pain, there are a few studies that examined acupressure in people with lower back pain.

In the study,  the research team randomly assigned 67 participants with chronic low back pain into three groups: relaxing acupressure, stimulating acupressure or usual care.

“Relaxing acupressure is thought to be effective in reducing insomnia while stimulating acupressure is thought to be effective in fatigue reduction,” she said.

Participants in the acupressure groups were trained to administer acupressure on certain points of the body, and spent between 27 and 30 minutes daily, over the course of six weeks, performing the technique.

Participants in the usual care group were asked to continue whatever treatments they were currently receiving from their care providers to manage their back pain and fatigue.

“Compared to the usual care group, we found that people who performed stimulating acupressure experienced pain and fatigue improvement and those that performed relaxing acupressure felt their pain had improved after six weeks,” she said.

“We found no differences among the groups in terms of sleep quality or disability after the six weeks,” she continued.

Murphy noted that chronic pain is difficult to manage and people with the condition tend to have additional symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression.

“Better treatments are needed for chronic pain. Most treatments offered are medications, which have side effects, and in some cases, may increase the risk of abuse and addiction,” Murphy said.

She said this study highlights the benefits of a non-pharmacological treatment option that patients could perform easily on their own and see positive results.

Brain zapping can help retrieve forgotten memories

Forgotten memories can be retrieved by stimulating a specific brain region using electrical currents, scientists have found for the first time.

The research,  shows that the left rostrolateral prefrontal cortex plays a critical role in memory recall. 

"We found dramatically improved memory performance when we increased the excitability of this region," said a Prof.

The left rostrolateral prefrontal cortex is important for high-level thought, including monitoring and integrating information processed in other areas of the brain, he said. 

This area is located behind the left side of the forehead, between the eyebrow and the hairline.
"We think this brain area is particularly important in accessing knowledge that you formed in the past and in making decisions about it," said the Prof.

The psychologists conducted experiments with three groups of people whose average age was 20. Each group contained 13 women and 11 men.

Participants were shown a series of 80 words on a computer screen. For each word, participants were instructed to imagine either themselves or another person interacting with the word, depending on whether the words "self" or "other" also appeared on the screen.

The following day, the participants returned to the laboratory for three tests -- one of their memory, one of their reasoning ability and one of their visual perception.

Each participant wore a device that sent a weak electrical current through an electrode on the scalp to decrease or increase the excitability of neurons in the left rostrolateral prefrontal cortex.
Increasing their excitability makes neurons more likely to fire, which enhances the connections between neurons, he said.

For the first half of the hour-long study, all participants received "sham" stimulation -- meaning that the device was turned on just briefly, to give the sensation that something was happening, but then turned off so that no electrical stimulation was applied.

This allowed the researchers to measure how well each participant performed the tasks under normal conditions.

For the next 30 minutes, one group of participants received an electrical current that increased their neurons' excitability, the second group received current that suppressed neuron activity and the third group received only the sham stimulation.

Memory scores for the group whose neurons received excitatory stimulation during the second half of the study were 15.4 percentage points higher than their scores when they received the sham stimulation.

Scores for those who received fake stimulation during both sessions increased by only 2.6 percentage points from the first to the second session -- a statistically insignificant change that was likely was due to their increased familiarity with the task, researchers said.

Scores for the group whose neuron activity was temporarily suppressed increased by just five percentage points, which was not statistically significant, researchers said.

"Our previous neuroimaging studies showed the left rostrolateral prefrontal cortex is highly engaged during memory retrieval," he said.

"Now the fact that people do better on this memory task when we excite this region with electrical stimulation provides causal evidence that it contributes to the act of memory retrieval," he said.

Irregular heartbeat? Try eating chocolates- good for your heart !

 Almost everyone loves chocolates. However, most of us think feel guilty when biting into the silky-smooth delicacy about increasing our weight and sugar intake. However now you can shed off that guilt! There is some respite for all those who love chocolate. A new study that indicates that chocolates may be good for your heart has been published in the journal Heart.

Chocolate may be associated with a lower risk of getting atrial fibrillation. An irregular heart rhythm is called atrial fibrillation. The relationship was seen strongest in women who consumed one serving per week.

Research conducted at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the Duke University Medical Centre has revealed that moderate consumption of chocolates may be related to a lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

An irregular heart rhythm, often with features of a very fast heart rate is referred to as atrial fibrillation. It can lead to poor blood flow which can cause brain failure and strokes and can even lead to death if not treated. The usual symptoms of atrial fibrillation are fatigue, heat palpitations, and breathlessness. 

Recently chocolates, especially dark chocolate has gained recognition for being friendly to the heart owing the presence of antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols. Data from over 55, 000 participants was analysed, aged between 50 and 54. The report was published in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study.

The participants were asked to consume a certain fixed amount of serving of chocolate per week each serving being equal to 30 grams. The type of chocolate consumed was not asked from them. Data on their diet, lifestyle and heart disease risk factors was collected from the participants.

Their heath was examined for a period of 13 years for episodes of hospital treatments and deaths from the national registry data, and it was observed that 3346 new cases of atrial fibrillation were diagnosed.

The results revealed that rates of AF were less for participants who ate chocolate regularly than those whose consumption was less than 30 gm per month which was equal to 1 serving.
The positive effect of chocolate consumption was the maximum when women consumed 1 serving of chocolate per week and men ate 2 to 6 servings of chocolate weekly. 

It was seen that after considering all factors of heart disease, the newly diagnosed AF was lower for those who consumed 1 to 3 servings of chocolate per month. The chances of developing AF were 17 percent lower with one weekly serving of chocolate and 20 percent lower for 2 to 6 servings of chocolate and 14 percent lower with a daily consumption of one or more servings. However, though the actual cause is not yet known, they imply that snacking on dark chocolate can be a healthy choice for most people.

Dark chocolate is now seen as the new healthystimulating food. Dark chocolate has a lot of raw processed cocoa beans which contain very high anti-oxidant properties. Raw cocoa beans rich in anti-oxidants like flavanols comprise dark chocolate. Dark chocolate also contains high levels of an alkaloid called theobromine which help in relaxing and stimulating. 

It can also widen blood vessels and thereby lower blood pressure. Dark chocolate is also beneficial for the brain. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology claims dark chocolate can increase memory by almost 30 percent and improve your skills of problem solving. 

Lastly, no need to worry about your weight when it comes to dark chocolate! Dark chocolate is known to have a high satiety value which reduces cravings. It is also having plenty of MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) that improve metabolism and help in burning fat.
