Why we have two nostrils instead of one big hole

If you close one eye or put a finger to your ear, there’s an immediate sense of loss. Two eyes help us see the world while two ears enable us to locate sounds. But there’s not the same dramatic sense of loss if you block one nostril. Unlike the eyes or ears, they’re in almost the exact same position on our face. So why don’t we just have a large hole like the mouth? Why do we have two nostrils?

It turns out that each nostril behaves differently to the other nostril throughout the day. This is known as the nasal cycle, and it plays a vital role in our overall health. At a certain point, one nostril takes in air more rapidly. Later the dominant nostril shifts. Throughout the day, which nostril is dominant keeps swapping. This alternating airflow seems to help us breathe and smell more effectively.

How our nostrils take turns breathing

We’re wired to breathe through our nose. Mouth breathing is only really required when we need more air during exercise or respiratory distress, or when the nose is blocked. Unlike the mouth, the nose does more than just draw air into and out of the lungs. One of its core functions is to prepare the air for the lungs, something the mouth cannot do. The nose filters out dust and pollutants, warms the air to body temperature, and adds the right amount of moisture so that the air is at 100 percent humidity before it gets to the lungs. Without this process, the air would be colder and drier, which irritates and constricts the airways and can lead to inflammation. 

Having two nostrils helps the nose cope with this demanding task of preparing air for the lungs. “The fact that we have two nostrils is not unusual, as we have two eyes and two ears,” says Ronald Eccles, an emeritus professor at Cardiff University who founded its Common Cold Centre. “What is unusual is that the nostrils alternate airflow from one side to the other. This may allow one side of the nose to rest.”  

 Studies have shown that at no point do both nostrils draw in the same amount of air. Every few hours one side of the nose is more open and handles most of the airflow while the other processes less air, enabling it to recover moisture. 

How each nostril smells differently

Smell is closely linked to breathing. As we breathe, odor molecules enter the nostrils, dissolve into the mucus lining and bind to neurons that send signals to the brain. Thanks to the nasal cycle, air flows into the nostrils at different speeds and so each nostril handles odors differently.

When we breathe, one nostril is more closed than the other and so has a slower rate of airflow. That slower flow of air means that there’s more time for slowly-absorbing chemicals to dissolve into the mucus lining. Experiments suggest that people smell slowly absorbed chemicals more strongly through a resting, or more closed, nostril.

However, the more closed nostril is not as good at detecting quickly-dissolving odor chemicals. Meanwhile, the more open nostril’s faster airflow means that quickly-dissolving chemicals can reach more of the smell-detecting tissue in your nose and send more signals to the brain. So basically each nostril smells slightly differently.

“It’s not one blunt odor that’s hitting you,” says Thomas Hummel, the head of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Smell and Taste at Dresden University of Technology. 

“You perceive chemicals differently because they are absorbing differently.” This usually happens without our conscious awareness. The alternating airflow ensures that each nostril gives the brain different inputs. The brain then combines these inputs together to get more information and a richer sense of smell. 

Two nostrils improve our ability to locate smell

The distance between our two nostrils is not as large as the distance between the eyes or ears. But having two nostrils can still help us locate smells. “The brain is good at using even small inputs,” says Matthew Grubb, a professor of neuroscience at King’s College London, who focuses on the olfactory system. “There’s pretty good evidence that one of the things nervous systems can do is to use information from the two nostrils to figure out where a smell is coming from.”

In one experiment, scientists asked blindfolded participants to sniff out a 33-foot chocolate trail through grass. Participants wore a device that fits onto the nose and mixed odors from the outside world so that there was no difference in what each nostril smells. This made participants slower and less accurate at locating and tracking the chocolate scent than when they didn’t wear the device.

Two nostrils might give us an advantage against colds 

Two nostrils could even bring other benefits besides breathing and smell: They may help us fight viral infections. When you have a cold, one nostril is a lot more congested while the other manages most of the breathing. Having a severely blocked nostril causes the temperature of the nasal passage to increase. This may repel cold viruses since viruses don’t reproduce well at high temperatures.

Having two nostrils is far from redundant. We might not notice the nasal cycle, but it’s still a key part of the way the nose functions. The nostrils work together to enhance the way we breathe and smell. So next time you take a deep breath or smell a delicious pie, don’t take your two nostrils for granted.

Mindful Eating – Enjoy Every Bite

It’s easy to get distracted while eating and to get in a rhythm of just chewing and swallowing. However, eating is one of the most pleasurable moments in our day, and it would be a shame not to savor it fully. Eating mindfully will allow you to have a richer, more satisfying experience. Moreover, it’s a good way of controlling the quantity of food you consume, as each bite will become more meaningful and important in your mind. These are the steps for mindful eating:

1. Breathe Before Starting to Eat – Busy schedules make us go from one task to the next without taking a moment to breathe in between. Have that awareness in mind, and before you start your meal take a moment to breathe deeply, calm down, and let your body transition to a state of eating. Sit comfortably, slowly take 8-10 breaths and only then go on to the next stage.

2. Listen to Your Body - After breathing, gain awareness of your physical sensations, mainly in the stomach. Ask yourself ‘How hungry am I on a scale of 1-10?’ You might also ask why you’re hungry; is your stomach empty? Are you bored? Try not to think of the last time you ate and just listen to your physical sensations in the present moment.

3. Eat According to Your Hunger Level - Now that you are aware of your feeling of hunger and its reasons, you can choose better what and how much you want to eat.

4. Eat Calmly – Don’t try to finish the meal quickly. Eat slowly and breathe between bites.

5. If You Aren’t Enjoying, Don’t Force Yourself to Continue – During the first 3 bites, feel the taste and texture of the food and think of how much enjoyment you are getting from what you are consuming. If you find that you aren’t experiencing joy, simply stop eating. You will find that if you practice this step – even sweets sometimes become less appealing.

It is an access point for germs

Research has found that people who drive for a minimum of 50-90 minutes on a daily basis are at the highest risk of developing a negative attitude and go through anxious and depressive episodes. Confined to a closed environment on a long route has been linked to symptoms of chronic unhappiness, which has been further linked to bad sleeping patterns, weight fluctuations, eating disorders and mood fluctuations.

Innovative 50minute workout that reduces heart attack risk

Working out for just 5 minutes can now reduce heart attack risks. A research has found an innovative 5 minutes workout that is not only time efficient but, reduces your heart attack risk, helps you think more clearly and boost your sports performance.

Preliminary results from a clinical trial of Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST), were presented at a conference recently.


IMST is basically strength-training for the muscles you breathe in with, said the lead author of the study.


Developed in the 1980s as a means to wean critically ill people off ventilators, IMST involves breathing in vigorously through a hand-held device, an inspiratory muscle trainer- which provides resistance. Imagine sucking hard through a straw which sucks back.


It's something you do quickly in your home or office, without having to change your clothes, and so far it looks it is very beneficial to lower blood pressure and possibly boost cognitive and physical performance, he said.


During early use in patients with lung disease, patients performed a 30 minute, low-resistance regimen daily to boost their lung capacity.


But in 2016, researchers published results from a trial to see if just 30 inhalations per day with greater resistance might help sufferers of obstructive sleep apnea, who tend to have weak breathing muscles.
In addition to more restful sleep, subjects showed an unexpected side effect after 6 weeks. Their systolic blood pressure plummeted by 12 millimeters of mercury. That's about twice as much of a decrease as aerobic exercise can yield and more than many medications deliver.


That's when we got interested, said principal investigator.


Systolic blood pressure, which signifies the pressure in your vessels when your heart beats, naturally creeps up as arteries stiffen with age, leading to damage of blood-starved tissues and a higher risk of heart attack, cognitive decline and kidney damage.


While 30 minutes per day of aerobic exercise has clearly been shown to lower blood pressure, only about 5 % of adults meet that minimum. Meanwhile, 65% of mid-life adults have high systolic blood pressure.


Our goal is to develop time-efficient, evidence-based interventions that those busy mid-life adults will actually perform, said a researcher.


The preliminary results showed that with about half the tests done, the researchers have found significant drops in blood pressure and improvements in large-artery function among those who performed IMST with no changes in those who used a sham breathing device that delivered low-resistance.


The IMST group is also performing better n certain cognitive and memory tests.


When asked to exercise to exhaustion, they're also able to stay on the treadmill longer and keep their heart rate and oxygen consumption lower during exercise.


Some cyclists and runners have already begun to use commercially-available inspiartory muscle trainer to gain a competitive edge.


But researchers stress that their findings are preliminary and curious individuals should ask their doctor before considering IMST.


That said, with a high compliance rate ( fewer than 10 % of study participants drop out) and no real side-effects, they're optimistic.


High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in America, said a researcher. Having another option in the toolbox to help prevent it would be a real victory.

A Vitamin That Can Make Your Blood Vessels Younger

Heart disease in all its forms continues to be the top killer of Americans. Following a heart healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise can help, but health experts continue to search for even more effective treatment—and they may have found one: A new study suggests that an antioxidant can breathe new life into old and stiff arteries.

In the small study—researchers gave ten volunteers between the ages of 60 and 79 a daily supplement called MitoQ (it’s a refined version of the natural antioxidant coenzyme Q10); another ten got a placebo. After six weeks, the researchers analyzed the health and size of participants’ arteries, then switched the supplement group to the placebo while the others began taking MitoQ.

At the conclusion of their testing, researchers noted when volunteers got the supplement, their arteries regained flexibility. Essentially, MitoQ seemed to reverse artery aging by as much as 15 to 20 years. The study’s lead author,  said  that “An improvement of that magnitude, if sustained, is associated with about a 13 percent reduction in heart disease.” 

According to the researchers, the study “breathes new life into the discredited theory that supplementing the diet with antioxidants can improve health.” He went on to note that “it suggests that targeting… mitochondria may be a better way to reduce oxidative stress and improve cardiovascular health with aging.”

Both researchers plan to conduct additional follow-up studies to confirm their findings. Dr. Seals noted that physical activity and proper eating habits continue to be the best ways of avoiding heart disease. “At the public health level, not enough people are willing to do that,” he said. “We’re looking for complementary, evidence-based options to prevent age-related changes that drive disease. These supplements may be among them.”
