What Really Happens to Your Body When You Stop Drinking

One of the most common New Year resolutions is Dry January. After a December filled with alcohol-filled holiday parties and gatherings, many of us want to start the New Year with a booze-detox in order to feel refreshed. But can abstaining from alcohol for 30 days actually make a difference?

Health experts claim it does! Being alcohol-free for one month has proven health benefits, mainly for those who are considered ‘heavier drinkers’.

The recommended consumption of alcohol would be up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks for men. If your consumption is normally within that limit, the health benefits of Dry January may be less pronounced for you (in fact, drinking alcohol in moderation has a positive effect on psychological well-being and cardiovascular health).

If you feel you are exceeding the recommended amount of alcohol per day or just feel up to the challenge, here are the health benefits of cutting alcohol for 30 days.

1.  Liver Relief
It is well known that the liver is the organ that suffers the most damage from excessive drinking. The good news is the liver has the ability to regenerate and heal, so the damage is reversible. It will take a few weeks, but once you stop drinking in excess liver fats will dissolve. Moreover, when the liver isn’t busy metabolizing alcohol, it can focus on other toxins in your body that need to be broken down.

2. Reduced Risk of Certain Types of Cancer
The consumption of alcohol has been linked with a higher risk of a few types of cancer; namely breast, liver colorectal, head and neck, and esophageal cancer. Naturally, the less you drink the more chances of getting sick are decreased.

3.  Balanced Eating Habits
On top of alcoholic drinks having high calories, alcohol also boosts your appetite. Saying no to those fries will no doubt be more difficult after you’ve had a few drinks. The reason for this is, according to a study published in the Journal of Obesity in 2015, alcohol heightens the senses. Even a mild intoxication will increase your brain activity in the hypothalamus, thus making you more sensitive to the smell of food and likely to eat more.

4.  Better Sleep
Alcohol is a depressant, so it slows down your body and can make you feel drowsy. However, once you are asleep your slumber is likely to be disrupted by it, as your body is working overtime to metabolize it. Once it is all metabolized, you may wake up abruptly, interfering with the important REM stage of sleep.

5.  Boost in Brain Activity
Drinking alcohol has an immediate effect on brain structure. It blocks signals between neurons, causing the immediate symptoms of intoxication: impulsive behavior, slurred speech, poor memory, and slowed reflexes. When drinking more than the recommended amount on a regular basis, brainpower may suffer more prolonged damage, like problems with verbal fluency, memory, attention, and perception of distances.

Taking a break from drinking gives your brain a chance to recover and regain those abilities.

6.  Decreased Risk of Heart Disease
Heavy drinking is known to produce many free radicals, which oxidize bad cholesterol (LDL). When LDL is oxidized it can form a blockage on the carotid arteries. Blockage in the carotid arteries is a serious cardiovascular problem. On the other hand, drinking in moderation (for example, a glass of wine once or twice a week) does not have any effect on LDL; on the contrary. It increases good cholesterol (HDL).

Limiting your alcohol intake is important to cardiovascular health, and to attain even better results you can add a workout to your routine of course.

Like everything else in life, the keyword with alcohol consumption is moderation. If you're not interested in quitting altogether but do want to cut back, the 30-day challenge is an excellent way to start.

Here's why you should avocados to your diet plan

Researchers have found that avocados are the wonder food which can help obese people in bringing about a change in their eating habits.

It helps in increasing meal satisfaction in obese adults, among other benefits.

The findings suggest that simple dietary changes can have an important impact on managing hunger and aiding metabolic control.

As part of the study published, the team of researchers assessed the underlying phsiological effects of including whole and half fresh Hass avocados on hunger, fullness and how satisfied subjects felt over a 6-hour period.

Researchers evaluated these effects in 31 overweight and obese adults in a randomised 3-arm crossover clinical trial. These dietary changes were also shown to limit insulin and blood glucose excursions, further reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease by adding healthy fats and fibres into a regular daily diet.

For years, fats have been targeted as the main cause of obesity, and now carbohydrates have come under scrutiny for their role in appetite regulation and weight control, said the lead researcher.

There is no ' one size fits all' solution when it comes to optimal meal composition for managing appetite. However, understanding the relationship between food chemistry and its physiological effects in different populations can reveal opportunities for addressing appetite control and reducing rates of obesity, putting us a step closer to personalised dietary recommendations, he added.

The research found that meals including avocado not only resulted in a significant reduction in hunger and an increase in how satisfied participants felt, but also found that an intestinal hormone called PYY was an important messenger of the physiological response

Combination of statins and Mediterranean diet more effective in reducing cardiovascular mortality risk

For those who have already had a heart attack or a stroke, the combination of statins and Mediterranean Diet appears to be the most effective choice to reduce the risk of mortality, especially from cardiovascular causes. It is the result of an Italian study  on over 1,000 adults recruited in the study.

The traditional Mediterranean diet is rich in fruit, vegetables, legumes, cereals, olive oil, wine in moderation, fish and low in meat and dairy products.

"We found  that statins and Mediterranean Diet together were more effective, as compared to one or the other considered separately, in reducing the risk of cardiovascular mortality. Likely, a Mediterranean diet facilitated the beneficial effect of statins, that in our real-life study were generally used at low doses".

Researchers also analyzed the potential underlying mechanisms of this positive interaction, so far poorly explored, between drugs and eating habits.

"The favorable combination of statins and Mediterranean Diet appeared to act, rather than on cholesterol levels, by reducing subclinical inflammation, a condition that predisposes to a higher risk of illness and mortality. This finding is of particular interest especially in the light of our observation that a high level of subclinical inflammation doubled the risk of mortality in patients who already had a heart attack or stroke ".

"Our data suggest that we should focus more on the possible interactions between food and drugs, an aspect largely neglected in epidemiological research. Of course, controlled clinical trials will be needed to clarify these findings. If our data will be confirmed, new therapeutic possibilities could be designed for those who have already had a cardiovascular event, allowing a better modulation of the pharmacological intervention in relation to life habits. This is a new aspect of personalized medicine".

A Vitamin That Can Make Your Blood Vessels Younger

Heart disease in all its forms continues to be the top killer of Americans. Following a heart healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise can help, but health experts continue to search for even more effective treatment—and they may have found one: A new study suggests that an antioxidant can breathe new life into old and stiff arteries.

In the small study——researchers gave ten volunteers between the ages of 60 and 79 a daily supplement called MitoQ (it’s a refined version of the natural antioxidant coenzyme Q10); another ten got a placebo. After six weeks, the researchers analyzed the health and size of participants’ arteries, then switched the supplement group to the placebo while the others began taking MitoQ.

At the conclusion of their testing, researchers noted when volunteers got the supplement, their arteries regained flexibility. Essentially, MitoQ seemed to reverse artery aging by as much as 15 to 20 years. The study’s lead author,  said  that “An improvement of that magnitude, if sustained, is associated with about a 13 percent reduction in heart disease.”

According to the researchers, the study “breathes new life into the discredited theory that supplementing the diet with antioxidants can improve health.” He went on to note that “it suggests that targeting… mitochondria may be a better way to reduce oxidative stress and improve cardiovascular health with aging.”

Both researchers plan to conduct additional follow-up studies to confirm their findings. Dr. Seals noted that physical activity and proper eating habits continue to be the best ways of avoiding heart disease. “At the public health level, not enough people are willing to do that,” he said. “We’re looking for complementary, evidence-based options to prevent age-related changes that drive disease. These supplements may be among them.”
