9 Amazing Antioxidants for Great Health And Correct way Of Cooking.

We all heard about antioxidants and how good they are for our health, but what do we really know about them and which foods contain them? Our body’s metabolism works most effectively in an alkaline environment, one that is achieved thanks to a diet rich in antioxidants. This article will show you how to get these magical components that help the process of metabolism and protect against cancer, heart disease and allergies.

Many studies have proven the link between the quality of our nutrition and our health. But what is a proper nutrition? What it includes? One of the major components in balanced diet is called antioxidants. They are found mainly in fruits and vegetables, and the list of their benefits is huge: they improve the appearance of the skin, reduce the risk of heart and blood vessels disease, maintain brain function and prevent neurological diseases. They are also a major factor in preventing cancer.

What Are Antioxidants?

We all know that without oxygen we cannot exist. But although it is essential to our functioning, it also leads us to illness and death, as it oxygenates anything in our body. Oxidation causes changes in the structure of the cells, proteins and fats in our body, harms the blood vessels and the heart, alters the genetic material found in the cell and damages the brain, eyes and our skin.
As the body is aware of the dangers that oxygen brings, the body uses antioxidants that fight free radicals and toxins. In many cases, mainly due to poor nutrition and toxins, our body needs more antioxidants than it can produce. We can supply the required amount only through proper nutrition, and sometimes by taking nutritional supplements.
It is important to note that the processes of oxidation in the body is accelerated not only because of a diet low in antioxidants, but also due to stress, pollution, smoking , chronic use of certain drugs, radiation, excessive exercise and chronic lack of sleep .
If only we could integrate these magical components regularly in our menu, we would be able to upgrade and improve our health and our quality of life and even lose weight. But how to do it?
Antioxidants are found mainly in fruits and vegetables, foods that are broken down in the body to alkaline minerals. Our metabolism functions best in alkaline environment, whereas acidic nutrition considers to be a fertile ground for infections, various diseases and obesity. Such a diet is typically low in antioxidants.
Below you can find the most important antioxidants to the body, which will contribute to a better health and proper weight:

 1. Beta Carotene

Foods rich in beta carotene: carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, squash, mango, pomegranate and parsley.
Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that belongs to the carotenoids group. This ingredient is converted in our body to vitamin A in many cases, and has a similar roles. It is considered an important antioxidant against cancer and heart disease, it helps to increase the good cholesterol levels, improves night vision, rehabilitates damaged mucous membranes in the body (mainly gastrointestinal) and strengthens the immune system.

2. Lycopene

Foods rich in lycopene: tomatoes, watermelon, red pepper, radish and red grapefruit.
Lycopene also belongs to the carotenoid group, and is the red pigment in tomatoes and red fruits and vegetables that keeps its health properties even after cooking. It reduces significantly the risk for different types of cancer and heart disease.
Research in recent decades indicates that lycopene reduces the risk of cancer and heart attacks and helps reduce cholesterol. Lycopene can be consumed as a dietary supplement, but you can get without much effort a respectable amount of lycopene through diet.
There is no recommended daily consumption of lycopene, but studies indicate that intake of about 30 mg of lycopene a day was found helpful. This is the amount as in a cup and a half of tomato juice or a serving of spaghetti with tomato sauce.
Lycopene is effective natural remedy for cancer
Lycopene is the pigment that gives fruits and vegetables their red color and is considered a strong and effective antioxidant. As an antioxidant it helps to repair or prevent damage to cells, and several studies have found that it helps to reduce the risk of several types of cancer and heart disease.
Some studies suggest that fruit and vegetable-rich diets may be linked to reduced cancer risk. While it has not been well studied in humans, early research suggests that lycopene may help prevent a number of different cancers, including colon, prostate and skin cancers.
A study  has found that frequent consumption of tomato products may be associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer.
Two other published studies suggest that lycopene may help protect against the development of prostate cancer.
Another study indicates that lycopene is one of the nutrients that demonstrated clear anticancer effects toward melanoma. Another animal study showed that frequent intake of lycopene over a long period of time considerably suppressed breast tumor growth in mice.
Lycopene for the heart
Other studies show that a high consumption of lycopene may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis and retinal degeneration.
A study suggested that lycopene, in addition to its ability to attack free radicals, may also reduce inflammation and cholesterol, improve immune function, and prevent blood from clotting. All of these may help reduce ischemic strokes, which are caused by clot-caused blockages in blood flow to the brain.
Lycopene is not destroyed in cooking
Unlike other components, lycopene is not destroyed in cooking. In fact, you can find more lycopene in cooked tomatoes: ½ cup of tomato sauce contains identical amount of lycopene to that in 5 medium tomatoes. In addition, lycopene is dissolved in fat, and adding olive oil, for example, will help its absorption in the body.

Other than tomatoes, you can find lycopene in guavas, watermelon, papaya, red grapefruit, cooked sweet red peppers, red cabbage, cooked asparagus, mango and carrots. It is a good idea to add these fruits and vegetables to your diet, along with other coloured fruits and vegetables to ensure you receive other essential nutrients.

3. Lutein

Foods rich in lutein: green leafy vegetables.
This is another member of the carotenoids group and is found mostly in green leaves. The leaves also contain phytochemical named chlorophyll, known to have many health benefits.
Lutein has been linked primarily to treat and prevent vision and eye problems.

4. Vitamin C

Foods rich in vitamin C: citrus fruits, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruit, strawberries, peppers, papaya and many more. Berries are especially high in vitamin C.
A lot of things have been said about vitamin C. Here is just a partial list of the benefits of this antioxidant: strengthening the immune system, treating infections, treating respiratory problems and allergies, protecting against cancer, maintaining normal heart function, treating chronic stress, accelerating weight loss, treating arthritis and improving vision.

5. Bioflavonoids

Foods rich in bioflavonoids: apple, onion, citrus fruits, pomegranate, green tea, blueberries and purple grapes.
Bioflavonoids are found primarily in foods that also contain vitamin C, and together they form a strong and stable structure of antioxidants that are good for strengthening the immune system, treating respiratory problems, treating allergies and infections, preventing cancer, treating inflammatory diseases and prevent heart disease.

6. Vitamin E

Foods rich in vitamin E: vitamin E is found in many foods such as whole wheat, eggs and fish, but the main concentration is found in vegetable oils such as olive oil, wheat germ, avocados, seeds and various nuts.
The main function of vitamin E is treating cardiovascular diseases: vitamin E reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol levels, is a natural blood thinner and reduces the risk of stroke. In addition, it helps to treat nerve problems, prevent cancer, improve lung function, relieve arthritis pain and symptoms associated with menopause and strengthening the immune system.

7. Selenium

Foods rich in selenium: Brazil nuts.
Selenium is another antioxidant which is the best mineral to treat heart problems. It helps the body prevent cancer and other autoimmune diseases, it is anti-inflammatory and helps in detoxification of toxic metals that are accumulated in our body and improves the functioning of the pancreas.
Excess of selenium is considered toxic, so the recommendation is to consume no more than 2-3 Brazil nuts a day.

8. Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble molecule that is vitamin-like. It plays an important role in energy production and is essential for those organs that have high energy requirements – such as the heart, liver and kidney.
This antioxidant strengthens the immune system, treats high blood pressure, helps to balance diabetes, helps in weight loss, helps in cancer prevention and treats chronic fatigue. Another key role is strengthening the heart muscle and preventing muscle pain, which are known side effects if you are treated with statins.
CoQ10 reduces deaths from heart failure
It had been discovered that people with heart failure suffer from CoQ10 deficiency. Their condition gets more severe when the deficiency is more pronounced. A group of researchers studied the effects of coenzyme Q10 on heart failure patients. When patients took 100 milligrams of CoQ10 three times a day, the effects on their heart condition were very positive, which gave credibility to CoQ10 therapy.
The Danish study was a randomized controlled trial. 420 patients with moderate to severe heart failure were followed for two years. Half of the participants received CoQ10 three times a day, while the other half received a placebo.
By the end of the study, deaths in the CoQ10 group were significantly lower (18 deaths versus 36 deaths in the placebo group). Also, patients taking the supplement required less hospitalizations compared to their peers that were taking the placebo (29 versus 55).
CoQ10 is the first medication to improve survival in chronic heart failure
The findings prompted the head of the research group,  to announce: CoQ10 is the first medication to improve survival in chronic heart failure since ACE inhibitors and beta blockers more than a decade ago and should be added to standard heart failure therapy.

A 2014  meta-analysis reviewed all of the existing randomized trials that examined CoQ10 as a treatment modality for heart failure. They concluded that there is no clear evidence to support or refute the use of coenzyme Q10 for heart failure.
Coenzyme Q10 is normally produced by the body and is needed for the function of every cell. It’s a powerful antioxidant and it’s one of my top 9 antioxidants for great health. Its levels decrease with age and may be low in people with cancer, certain genetic disorders, diabetes, heart conditions, HIV/AIDS, muscular dystrophies, and Parkinson’s disease.
Natural sources of CoQ10
Foods with largest content of this coenzyme include:
  • Fish (sardine, salmon, mackerel, tuna)
  • Oils olive and grape seed oil)
  • Red meat (especially organ meat – heart, liver and kidney)
  • Some nuts (peanuts, pistachios, sesame seeds)
  • Certain fruit and vegetables (apples, berries, spinach, oranges, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries and black currents).
If eating meat, choose grass-fed and free-range meat. As the CoQ10 is fat-soluble, it should be eaten with a meal that contains fat.
CoQ10 can also be taken as a dietary supplement. In the US, it’s regulated as food and it’s not yet approved for the treatment of any medical condition.
CoQ10 can also reduce blood pressure and it’s one of my recommended substances to naturally reduce high blood pressure.

9. Alpha Lipoic Acid

Foods rich in alpha lipoic acid: yeast, broccoli, spinach and potatoes.
This is a less known antioxidant but it has a very important role: this acid encourages the body to convert food energy more efficiently, thus preventing food to be stored as fat. In addition, it has an effective role in getting rid of toxins from the body, strengthening the immune system and also helps diabetics – it helps to balance blood sugar levels and prevents damage to the eyes as well as nerve damage which are known side effects of diabetes.
So after being more familiar with these antioxidants and their importance to our overall health, make sure that you get enough of these amazing components in your daily nutrition.

The Best Cooking Methods To Keep Nutrients In Food

One of the main problems in cooking our food is that some of the vitamins are destroyed in the process and some cooking methods can leach the minerals and other nutrients out of foods.
This problem prevents our body from getting what it needs from the food, which can lead to the beginning of the shortage of vitamin and mineral reserves in the body. The matter is even more complex for people who suffer from digestive problems. This is due to the fact that cooking allows food to digest more easily in the affected intestine, but this food is more meager in the “building blocks” that build our body.
But dieticians explain what are the best cooking methods and how to cook right to keep nutritional values for maximum health.
Here you can find the best cooking methods and tips to keep nutritional values while cooking. These cooking methods suitable for people suffering from digestive problems and for healthy people who want to “get more” from their food.

Rules to help select the appropriate cooking method

Cooking methods that preserve the nutritional values have to meet several basic rules:
Quick Cooking: The longer you heat the food, the bigger vitamins destruction is. Particularly susceptible to destruction are water soluble vitamins like vitamin C and vitamin B group.
Low cooking temperature: the higher the cooking temperature, destruction of vitamins and nutrients increases.
Minimal exposure to light: cover the cooking pot to avoid possible exposure to light that affects vitamins. This way you can also shorten the cooking time.
Avoid frying: heating oil causes the appearance of carcinogenic and pro-inflammatory substances and causes the destruction of carotenoids, like pro-vitamin A.

Cooking methods that will help you to maintain nutritional values

1. Reduce the amount of cooking water
When you cook vegetables, use their cooking water for soup or rice, so the vitamins and the minerals that are in the cooking water won’t go down the drain, but will go instead to your body.

2. Steam vegetables rather than boiling them
Steam cooking is cooking at a lower temperature than boiling or in the oven, and thus the impact on vitamins and minerals is small. In addition, it saves the cooking water and preserve most of the minerals in the food. You can steam almost all vegetables – zucchini, squash, carrots and so on.

3. Crock pot baking vegetables in their skin
Here too there is no use of cooking water. For example: cooking potato with their skins preserves the vitamins and minerals. That way you can retain about 80% of Vitamin C.

Preserving the nutritional value of food that we eat is essential to our health and you should always check whether your body gets what it needs. Therefore, it is important to do nutritional testing of vitamins and minerals to check deficiencies or excess which may also cause damage.

A Vitamin That Can Make Your Blood Vessels Younger

Heart disease in all its forms continues to be the top killer of Americans. Following a heart healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise can help, but health experts continue to search for even more effective treatment—and they may have found one: A new study suggests that an antioxidant can breathe new life into old and stiff arteries.

In the small study—researchers gave ten volunteers between the ages of 60 and 79 a daily supplement called MitoQ (it’s a refined version of the natural antioxidant coenzyme Q10); another ten got a placebo. After six weeks, the researchers analyzed the health and size of participants’ arteries, then switched the supplement group to the placebo while the others began taking MitoQ.

At the conclusion of their testing, researchers noted when volunteers got the supplement, their arteries regained flexibility. Essentially, MitoQ seemed to reverse artery aging by as much as 15 to 20 years. The study’s lead author,  said  that “An improvement of that magnitude, if sustained, is associated with about a 13 percent reduction in heart disease.”

According to the researchers, the study “breathes new life into the discredited theory that supplementing the diet with antioxidants can improve health.” He went on to note that “it suggests that targeting… mitochondria may be a better way to reduce oxidative stress and improve cardiovascular health with aging.”

Both researchers plan to conduct additional follow-up studies to confirm their findings. Dr. Seals noted that physical activity and proper eating habits continue to be the best ways of avoiding heart disease. “At the public health level, not enough people are willing to do that,” he said. “We’re looking for complementary, evidence-based options to prevent age-related changes that drive disease. These supplements may be among them.”

This Novel Antioxidant Can Reduce the Age of Blood Vessels

According to a new research, older adults who take a novel antioxidant that targets cellular powerhouses, or mitochondria, have seen the aging of their blood vessels reverse by the equivalent of 15-20 years within just six weeks.

“Hypertension,” adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests that pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements could play a very important role in preventing heart disease – the nation’s No.1 killer. It also resurrects the idea that oral antioxidants, which have been largely dismissed as ineffective in recent years, could reap measurable health benefits if properly targeted.
Lead author a postdoctoral researcher in the department of integrative physiology, says that “this is the first clinical trial to assess the impact of a mitochondrial-specific antioxidant on vascular function in humans. It suggests that therapies like this may hold real promise for reducing the risk of age-related cardiovascular disease.”
For this study, the team recruited 20 healthy men and women, aged 60-79 from the area.
Half of the participants took 20 milligrams per day of a commercially available supplement called MitoQ. It’s made by chemically altering the naturally-occurring antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 to make it cling to the mitochondria inside cells. The other half took a placebo.
After a period of six weeks, the researchers assessed how well the lining of blood vessels, or the endothelium, functioned by measuring how much subjects’ arteries dilated with increased blood flow.
Then, after a two week period of taking nothing, the two groups switched, with the placebo group taking the supplement, and vice versa. The tests were repeated.
The researchers observed that when taking the supplement, dilation of subjects’ arteries improved by 42%, making their blood vessels, at least by that measure, look like those of someone 15-20 years younger. An improvement of that magnitude, if sustained, is associated with around a 13% reduction in heart disease, the researcher said. The study also showed that the improvement in dilation was due to a reduction in oxidative stress.
Those participants, who, under placebo conditions, had stiffer arteries – another indication of vascular dysfunction – supplementation was associated with reduced stiffness.
Shedding New Light on Antioxidants
Blood vessels grow stiff and have difficulty dilating with age largely as a result of oxidative stress – the excess production of metabolic byproducts called free radicals which can damage the endothelium and impair its functioning. When we are young, our bodies produce enough antioxidants to destroy those free radicals. However, as we age, the balance tips in the other direction, as mitochondria and other cellular processes produce excess free radicals and the body’s antioxidant defenses can’t keep up.
Oral antioxidant supplements such as vitamin C and vitamin E fell out of favor after a number of large studies found them to be ineffective.
This particular study breathes new life into the discredited theory that supplementing your diet with antioxidants can help to improve your health. It suggests that targeting a certain source – mitochondria – might be a much better way to decrease oxidative stress and improve cardiovascular health with aging.

Natural Remedies for Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes treatment can include many elements, including traditional medications, alternative medicine, and natural remedies. Please read till the end & come to a conclusion.
Alternative therapies encompass a variety of disciplines that include everything from diet and exercise to mental conditioning and lifestyle changes. Examples of alternative treatments include acupuncture, guided imagery, chiropractic treatments, yoga, hypnosis, biofeedback, aromatherapy, relaxation exercises, herbal remedies, massage, and many others.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, defines complementary and alternative medicine as a "group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine." Complementary medicine is used with conventional treatments, whereas alternative medicine is used instead of conventional medicine.
Some people with diabetes use complementary or alternative therapies to treat diabetes. Although some of these therapies may be effective, others can be ineffective or even harmful. Patients who use complementary and alternative medicine need to let their healthcare providers know what they are doing.

What Alternative Treatments Are Used As Diabetes Treatment?

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a procedure in which a practitioner inserts very thin needles into designated points on the skin. Some scientists say that acupuncture triggers the release of the body's natural painkillers. Acupuncture has been shown to offer relief from chronic pain. Acupuncture is sometimes used by people with neuropathy, the painful nerve damage of diabetes.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a technique that helps a person become more aware of and learn to deal with the body's response to pain. This alternative therapy emphasizes relaxation and stress-reduction techniques.
Guided imagery is a relaxation technique that some professionals who use biofeedback also practice. With guided imagery, a person thinks of peaceful mental images, such as ocean waves. A person may also include the images of controlling or curing a chronic disease, such as diabetes. People using this technique say these positive images can ease their condition.

What Natural Dietary Supplements Are Used for Diabetes Treatment?

Chromium
The benefit of added chromium for diabetes has been studied and debated for several years. Several studies report that chromium supplements may improve diabetes control. Chromium is needed to make glucose tolerance factor, which helps insulin improve its action. Because of insufficient information on the use of chromium to treat diabetes, no recommendations for supplementation exist.
Ginseng
Several types of plants are referred to as ginseng, but most studies of ginseng and diabetes have used American ginseng. Those studies have shown some sugar-lowering effects in fasting and after-meal blood sugar levels as well as in A1c levels (average blood sugar levels over a three-month period). However, larger and more long-term studies are needed before general recommendations for use of ginseng can be made. Researchers also have determined that the amount of sugar-lowering compound in ginseng plants varies widely.
Magnesium
Although the relationship between magnesium and diabetes has been studied for decades, it is not yet fully understood. Studies show that a deficiency in magnesium may worsen blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Scientists say that a deficiency of magnesium interrupts insulin secretion in the pancreas and increases insulin resistance in the body's tissues. Evidence suggests that a deficiency of magnesium may contribute to certain diabetes complications. A recent analysis showed that people with higher dietary intakes of magnesium (through consumption of whole grains, nuts, and green leafy vegetables) had a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Vanadium
Vanadium is a compound found in tiny amounts in plants and animals. Early studies showed that vanadium normalized blood sugar levels in animals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. A recent study found that when people with diabetes were given vanadium, they developed a modest increase in insulin sensitivity and were able to decrease their insulin requirements. Currently researchers want to understand how vanadium works in the body, discover potential side effects, and establish safe dosages.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10, often referred to as CoQ10 (other names include ubiquinone and ubiquinol) is a vitamin-like substance. CoQ10 helps cells make energy and acts as an antioxidant. Meats and seafood contain small amounts of CoQ10. Supplements are marketed as tablets and capsules. The evidence is not sufficient to evaluate CoQ10's effectiveness as a complementary or alternative therapy for diabetes. CoQ10 has not been shown to affect blood sugar control.

What Plant Foods Are Used for Diabetes Treatment?

The following plant foods are sometimes used for diabetes treatment, particularly for those with type 2 diabetes.
  • Brewer's yeast
  • Buckwheat
  • Broccoli and other related greens
  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Coffee
  • Okra/ lady finger/ bhindi
  • Peas
  • Fenugreek seeds/methi
  • SageSage Leaves leaves photo
Most plant foods are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which are important to good health in people with diabetes. Some revealing new studies show that certain plant foods -- cinnamon, cloves, and coffee -- may actually aid in fighting inflammation and help insulin, the hormone that helps controls blood sugar. Studies have shown that cinnamon extracts can increase sugar metabolism, triggering insulin release, which also affects cholesterol metabolism. Clove oil extracts (eugenol) have been found to improve the function of insulin and to lower glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. Recent findings indicate that an unknown compound in coffee (not caffeine) may enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Still, the scientific evidence thus far does not support the role of garlic, ginger, ginseng, hawthorn, or nettle in benefiting blood sugar control in people with diabetes. If you have diabetes and are considering taking any of these herbal substances for diabetes treatment, be sure you talk to your doctor before you take them.

What Weight Control Substances Are Used for Diabetes Treatment?

The following plant foods are sometimes used for diabetes treatment, particularly for those with type 2 diabetes.
Since weight and diabetes are linked, many people with diabetes turn to natural alternative therapies for diabetes treatment, particularly those that claim to help with weight loss, including:
  • Chitosan is a sugar that is obtained from the hard outer skeleton of shellfish, including crab, lobster, and shrimp. It is used for medicine
  • Garcinia cambogia (hydroxycitric acid)s a derivative of citric acid that is found in a variety of tropical plants including Garcinia cambogia and Hibiscus subdariffa.

Are Herbs Really Safe for Diabetes Treatment?

In 2003, ephedrine -- also known as ma huang -- became the first herbal stimulant ever banned by the FDA. A popular component of over-the-counter weight loss drugs, ephedrine was found to have some benefits. However, the evidence of its ability to cause harm was far more compelling. In high doses, ephedrine has been known to cause insomnia (difficulty falling and staying asleep), high blood pressure, glaucoma, and urinary retention. This herbal supplement has also been associated with numerous cases of stroke.
Chitosan has received a great deal of recent publicity. It is derived from seashells and has the ability to bind to fat and prevent its absorption. Although it is said to facilitate weight loss, available studies thus far have not been encouraging.
Germander, Momordica charantiaSauropus androgynus, and aristolochic acid have been associated with liver disease, pulmonary disease, and kidney disease.
The other so-called "obesity remedies" listed have not been rigorously studied, and those that been reviewed have yielded disappointing results.
Also, a recent survey of herbal preparations for obesity found that many preparations contained lead or arsenic and other toxic metals. Some also contain other undeclared ingredients. Occasionally, there was mistaken plant identity as well.

What to Consider Before Using Natural Therapies for Diabetes Treatment

Before you think about using a natural therapy for diabetes treatment, be sure to consider the following:
  • Discuss any drugs you use, including herbal products, with your doctor before taking them.
  • If you experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhoea, or skin rashes, stop taking the herbal product and notify your doctor immediately.
  • Avoid preparations made with more than one herb.
  • Beware of commercial claims of what herbal products can do. Look for scientific-based sources of information.
Select brands of natural products carefully. Only purchase brands that list the herb's common and scientific name, the name and address of the manufacturer, a batch and lot number, expiration date, dosage guidelines, and potential side effects.
