Red wine can treat depression, anxiety

In a good news for wine lovers, researchers have found a compound present in red wine which can treat depression and anxiety.

The plant compound resveratrol displays anti-stress effects by blocking the expression of an enzyme which controls stress in the brain.

“Resveratrol may be an effective alternative to drugs for treating patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders,” said a researcher.

The findings shed light onto how neurological processes are impacted by resveratrol — a compound having numerous health benefits and found in the skin and seeds of grapes and berries.

While research has identified resveratrol to have antidepressant effects, the compound’s relationship to phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme influenced by the stress hormone corticosterone, was unknown.

Cornerstone regulates the body’s response to stress. Too much stress, however, can lead to excessive amounts of the hormone circulating in the brain and, ultimately, to depression or other mental disorders.

The research also reveals that PDE4, induced by excessive amounts of corticosterone, causes depression- and anxiety-like behaviour.

The enzyme lowers cyclic adenosine monophosphate — a messenger molecule that signals physiological changes such as cell division, change, migration and death — in the body, leading to physical alterations in the brain.

Resveratrol displayed neuroprotective effects against corticosterone by inhibiting the expression of PDE4. The research lays the groundwork for the use of the compound in novel antidepressants.
According to the researchers, although red wine contains resveratrol, consumption of alcohol has various health risks, including addiction.

IMPORTANCE OF B-VITAMINS

Vitamin B is a complex of 8 vitamins, which not only essential for a good health, but also enables smooth functioning of various functions of the body. Further, each of the vitamin B complexes has specific body functions ranging from iron metabolism to hair health to preventing migraine. Our body requires vitamin substances, as stated by their names.
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), B12.
  •
  • Vitamin B complex is widely present in food sources, and in someone who eats a well-balanced diet would be getting the required amounts of vitamin B complex.
  • Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is required for the body to make new cells and so has a significant role in the immune system. It has also known as the anti-stress vitamin as it helps in improving immunity. It also is required for breakdown of carbohydrates.
  • Vitamin B2, chemically known as riboflavin, is essential for red blood cell production and transporting oxygen throughout the body. It also has antioxidant properties by reducing free radicals. This also has anti-aging properties and reduces the onset of heart disease.
  • Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, is essential for cholesterol regulation. It promotes the formation of good cholesterol and so essential for preventing the onset of heart disease. It also is shown to have anti-acne effects.
  • Vitamin B5, pantothenic acid, is essential for fat and carbohydrate metabolism. It also is required for the production of hormones including testosterone and cortisol (stress hormones). It is also beneficial to the skin by reducing anti-aging effects including reducing brown spots.
  • Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine, has a major role to play in sleep and mood regulation. It produces various neurotransmitters like serotonin, melatonin, and norepinephrine which are essential for emotional well-being. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is useful in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Vitamin B7 or Biotin is known as the beauty vitamin, as it has major hair, skin, and nail benefits. It is also essential for glucose level maintenance. It assumes great importance in pregnancy as it is important for normal growth of the baby.
  • Vitamin B9 or folate or folic acid is again very essential in pregnancy as deficiency can lead to neurological defects in the developing baby. It also plays a major role in carrying oxygen to the cells through the RBCs.
  • Vitamin B12 or cobalamin is essential to ensure the other vitamins are functioning properly. B12 deficiency leads to anaemia, as it enables the red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. It is mostly present in non-vegetarian foods and supplements are commonly given in anaemic people.

5 Foods that fight asthma

SPINACH -
It is a great source of magnesium, which improves symptoms of asthma. Studies show that people with asthma tend to have lower blood and tissue levels of magnesium, and increasing magnesium intake in the long run can reduce the incidence of asthma attacks. Spinach is also high in B vitamins which help reduce stress-related asthma attacks.

RED PEPPER -

It is rich in vitamin C, which is especially helpful in reducing inflammation. Ascorbic acid present in red peppers inhibits the production of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase, which is present in most common asthma drugs.

ONIONS -

Onions have an anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effect, inhibit the release of histamines, and reduce bronchial obstruction. Onions contain prostaglandins that relax the bronchial passageways and have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties.

ORANGES AND LEMONS -

Consuming fruits high in Vitamin C can help reduce the instance of asthma attacks, particularly in children. A study in Italy found that children who ate the fruit several times a week experienced significantly fewer asthma symptoms than children who did not regularly eat these types of fruits.

APPLES -

Apples contain certain phytochemicals that can improve lung functioning in asthma sufferers. A study shows that children born to mothers who consumed four or more apples a week had half the chance of developing childhood asthma as did children born to women who consumed one or less apples per week.
