The Positive Side of Bad Habits

We all have at least one or two bad habits, but did you know that these habits aren’t necessarily bad, and in fact can improve your life?

Nail Biting – although it’s considered a bad habit by society, humans have been biting their nails since the dawn of time. Nail biting prevents your nails from getting too long and breaking or cutting you and it exposes you to tiny amounts of bacteria from residue under your nails. Research shows that exposure to small amounts of bacteria on a regular basis actually strengthens the immune system.

Fidgeting Keeps You Alert – fidgeting is actually your brain trying to improve its focus and alertness in the same way that yawning is its way to get you more oxygen quickly. Shaking your legs, twiddling your thumbs, doodling, et”c, all help you focus when you’re tired or bored.

Cursing – most people would frown upon swearing and cursing, especially around young children, but it also has appropriate uses; Researchers discovered that swearing in stressful times actually helps reducing your risk of a heart attack by half! Just remember that there’s a time and a place for everything…

Daydreaming –
daydreaming is the mind’s way to deal with complex problems by letting the conscious mind wander and allowing the subconscious to process and solve the issues. This also occurs if you’re doing a task which doesn’t require you to concentrate and allows your thoughts to roam.

Gossiping
– research performed in Brown University discovered that gossiping for even 20 minutes with a friend helped reduce tension and anxiety and boost the subject’s mood for up to 4 hours. Gossip is great at creating and strengthening bonds between people, but don’t use it for malicious and hurtful reasons.

Being Disorganized
– while some might think that disorganized people are lazy, the truth is that some people need a degree of chaos in their life and it helps them think outside the box. In a research performed a few years ago, students were put in tidy rooms and in messy rooms, and the ones in the messy rooms actually drew more creative pictures.

Sleeping In – endocrinologists recently discovered that waking up before 6:30am increases a person’s risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases. The best thing to do is go to bed when you’re naturally tired and letting your body wake up on its own.

Social Media –
kids and their phones! Actually, also adults and their phones! Everyone seems to be hooked on social media, checking their Facebook and Twitter all the time. The benefit we draw from it is quite surprising; we tend to make statements on social media and people will hold us up to those statements just like we will do for them. This forces us and them to stay on track and achieve our goals together.

Tantrums – expressing your anger in small amounts will reduce tension and stress, and is much healthier than bottling up all that anger and frustration inside. Kids know it better than us and that’s why they naturally do it. Just make sure you express your anger in a healthy way – punch a pillow, go off on a short rant, etc.

Watching Cute Videos
– if you think it’s nothing be procrastination, you’re dead-wrong. Watching videos helps the brain focus and complete tasks more effectively, and watching cute videos specifically increases our care-giving instincts and makes us take more care in the task we perform.

Good news for burn victims, artificial skin could help them 'feel'

A research paper now suggests that a new type of sensor could lead to artificial skin that someday helps burn victims 'feel' and safeguards others. According to the study, the skin's ability to perceive pressure, heat, cold, and vibration is a critical safety function that most people take for granted. But burn victims, those with prosthetic limbs, and others who have lost skin sensitivity for one reason or another, can't take it for granted, and often injure themselves unintentionally.

Researchers wanted to create a sensor that can mimic the sensing properties of skin. Such a sensor would need to be able to detect pressure, temperature, and vibration. But perhaps it could do other things too, the researchers thought.

Speaking about it, he said: "It would be very cool if it had abilities human skin does not; for example, the ability to detect magnetic fields, sound waves, and abnormal behaviours."

Researchers created such a sensor with a silicone tube wrapped in copper wire and filled with a special fluid made of tiny particles of iron oxide just one billionth of a meter long, called nanoparticles.

The nanoparticles rub around the inside of the silicone tube and create an electric current. The copper wire surrounding the silicone tube picks up the current as a signal. When this tube is bumped by something experiencing pressure, the nanoparticles move and the electric signal changes. Sound waves also create waves in the nanoparticle fluid and the electric signal changes in a different way than when the tube is bumped.

The researchers found that magnetic fields alter the signal too, in a way distinct from pressure or sound waves. Even a person moving around while carrying the sensor changes the electrical current, and the team found they could distinguish between the electrical signals caused by walking, running, jumping, and swimming.

Researchers hope it could help burn victims "feel" again, and perhaps act as an early warning for workers exposed to dangerously high magnetic fields. Because the rubber exterior is completely sealed and waterproof, it could also serve as a wearable monitor to alert parents if their child fell into deep water in a pool, for example.

He said, "The inspiration was to make something durable that would last for a very long time, and could detect multiple hazards."The team has yet to test the sensor for its response to heat and cold, but they suspect it will work for those as well. The next step is to make the sensor in a flat configuration, more like skin, and see if it still works.

Health Benefits And Bad Effects Of Kissing

Kissing may be the simplest way to express affection with other people. We kiss the babies’ chubby faces, the friends’ cheeks, and lovers’ lips to show our feelings as well as the desire for closeness. Also, kissing may be one of the natural tool for social bonding.

1. Makes One More Alert

This is the first one of the best benefits of kiss that I want to mention in this entire article. Kissing often boosts the release of noradrenaline and adrenaline, which increase your heart rate, make you feel more excited and alert. And then your body can prepare for any kind of action.

2. Helps You Feel Connected

Kissing can also help you feel connected and closer to your partner. According to a study about oxytocin  when you kiss your lover, your brain will increase the level of oxytocin, which has a calming power and strengthens trust and bonding between couples. Some other studies have also suggested that higher levels of oxytocin are associated with empathy, relationship longevity and support.

3. Improve Lungs Health

After kissing, our breathing often becomes faster. On average, we will breathe in and out about 60 times per minute while the normal number is only 20 times per minute. According to a research about breathing , inhaling and exhaling more often can help prevent many lung-related disorders. Actually, improving lungs health is one of the best benefits of kiss for human health that you should not look down.

4. Increase Longevity

Other biological benefits of kiss that I want to mention in this article must include increasing longevity. According to a study, kissing your partner every morning may help him live longer than 5 years if compared to other couples who never do that. Unfortunately, this effect of kissing is not true for female; therefore, they should kiss their guys every morning in order to boost their emotional relationship.

5. Improve Your Relationship Satisfaction
Other benefits of kiss that you should know must include its ability to improve the relationship satisfaction. Romantic kissing can help strengthen feelings of attachment to your partner who you are taking kisses, hence improving the relationship satisfaction. According to a study, more frequent kissing was related to the perceived feelings of couples about the relationship’s quality.

6. Stimulate Sexual Compatibility
This is also one of the best health benefits of kiss. Actually, kissing is a great way to stimulate your partner with sexual compatibility before getting naked and getting emotionally involved. The testosterone, which is the hormone for sex drive in both men and women, is released into saliva during kissing.

7. Boost The Self-Esteem
Kissing can help you boost your self-esteem.  According to a study, men who take a passionate kiss before getting out of their homes can get more motivation and then make more money. Therefore, it is said that kissing and home-life happiness can make us happier and more productive at work and simultaneously improve the self-esteem. In fact, this is one of the best benefits of kiss that I want all of my readers to know.

8. Keeps Teeth White
Having a kiss is a great way for you to clean your teeth and make them white. According to a research about effects of kissing on oral health, kissing can produce saliva which is responsible for keeping bacteria away. And this can help in inhibiting cavities and simultaneously breaking down the oral plaque. Addition to this, saliva can also wash out your mouth and inhibit the cavity that is the main cause of food particles and tooth decay. Therefore, if you want to get whiter and cleaner teeth, you should kiss your partner every day.

9. Relieve Stress

Relieving stress is one of the best health benefits of kiss that you should not skip. Kissing is an effective way to reduce the stress levels because your head is filled up with positive feelings right after you kiss your lover. Simultaneously, it helps reduce the level of cortisol in the body, which is a stress hormone, thus making you relaxed. You can exclude all of the sorrows from your life with a passionate kiss. Therefore, you should have a passionate kiss with your lover to feel relaxed rather than taking in anti-depressant pills.
When kissing, the brain can release the hormone serotonin, which improves the mood and the hormone dopamine, which regulates the feelings of desire and bonding. And during a passionate kiss, you will enjoy a peaceful mind without having any worry and sorrow. In other words, by reducing the stress hormones, the body can have a better process of healing any physiological processes caused by stress, and simultaneously help have more positive behavior and mental health

10. Check Out The Partner’s Compatibility
Checking out your lover’s compatibility is another one of the best benefits of kiss that you should know. Kissing is a great way to initially attract others, especially women. Women might put more importance on kisses as they consider them as a means of starting and developing the relationship between them and their partners.

11. Release Happy Hormones
Releasing happy hormones is another one of the health benefits of kiss that you should not look down. Actually, kissing can stimulate your brain to release chemicals of good feelings, including serotonin, oxytocin as well as dopamine. These chemicals are necessary for your happiness and they also aid to strengthen the relationship between you and your lover. Besides, your lips are packed with sensory neurons, which will be prompted when your lips have the touch with your partner’s lips. Addition to this, kissing links to addiction and reward and it is a great way to boost the brain system associated with romantic love, attachment and sex drive.

12. Tones Facial Muscles

It is amazing to know that toning facial muscle is one of the biological benefits of kiss. A vigorous kiss can help tone up the jawline and neck by performing lots of facial muscles. Addition to this, a kiss also helps boost the blood circulation to facial muscles.
Apart from toning facial muscles, kissing also helps tone muscles of the body. According to a research, a kiss associated with approximately 112 postural muscles of the whole body aside from nearly 34 facial muscles. Kissing also boosts the production of elastin and collagen, which are the keys for beautiful skin. As a result, kissing can help keep your muscles tight, making your face more youthful.

13. Cures Allergies
A kiss can improve the immune system and cure allergies as well. Actually, kissing can cause a decreased level of IgE antibodies, which take responsibility for releasing the histamine. The histamine release causes a few allergy symptoms such as watery eyes and sneezing. As a result, more kisses you have, fewer allergy symptoms you will suffer from.

14.  Burns Calories
When it comes to benefits of kiss, burning calories may be what you should know. A passionate kiss can help burn off 2-3 calories per minute when it lasts 20 seconds. Kissing and having sexual activity are considered as vigorous exercises in case you are fully engaged. Addition to this, when you kiss your lover, your heart will be able to skip a beat and even your heartbeat can be faster. And then, it releases adrenaline with other neurotransmitters getting into the blood as well. The increased levels of adrenaline can help increase the process of burning calories and metabolism.

15. Aids Digestion Of Babies
When a mother kisses her baby, this action is very good for the baby’s digestion. Through a kiss, the baby can receive all of the essential nutrients for growing up healthy along with breastfeeding.

Fighting cavities is also another one of the best health benefits of kiss. When kissing, there is an increased production of saliva in the mouth and this can help you wash away plaque on your teeth, which is known as the main cause of cavities, tooth decay as well as plaque build-up. Addition to this, the bacteria that may cause cavity can be transferred through kisses, especially when your partner has unhealthy oral health.

17. Boost Immunity
Boosting the immune system is also one of the health benefits of kiss that I want to mention in this article. According to a study, kissing can help protect women from Cytomegalovirus, which is known to be able to cause infant blindness as well as other birth defects that can be contracted through the mouth during pregnancy. Addition to this, kissing has been thought to be a great way to help people pass along bugs, hence improving the body’s defenses.

Kissing can help you improve your cardiovascular health naturally and effectively. This is because that this emotional action can keep your cholesterol and blood pressure at a low level. According to a study, married couples who have the frequency of kiss reported that they have reduced stress and cholesterol levels and increased relationship satisfaction.

Besides, kissing can make you have a healthy heartbeat, helping in dilating the blood vessels to get a healthy blood flows to all the vital body’s organs. And then the blood pressure and circulation will be well controlled. Moreover, stress is one of the leading causes of heart disease. Therefore, a kiss can help reduce stress, thus making it good for preventing some cardiovascular problems.

19. Relieves Pain

Another one of the health benefits of kiss is to relieve pains, especially the back pain, headaches as well as menstrual cramps.

Drinks that help you relax under stress

Looking for some quick remedies that will help you relax and calm down after a stressful day at the office? Well, look no further.

Food Technology magazine's contributing Editor Linda Milo Ohr has jotted down some ingredients and beverages that may have a calming effect when consumed. Some popular ingredients currently being used in products to promote relaxation or reduce stress include botanicals such as chamomile, passionflower, and valerian. Most people are familiar with chamomile in tea form as a mild sedative and muscle relaxant and another less well-known botanical, gotu kola, has been known to enhance cognitive function including memory and alertness and reduce mood disorders.

Passionflower is a sedative, and valerian is a muscle relaxant. One company has created an ingredient for beverages from a plant extract derived from lemon balm leaves of the species Melissa officinalis L. that acts simultaneously on stress and its associated symptoms like sleep disorders thanks to its specific composition. Another company created a pure form of the amino acid L-theanine to be added to beverages shown in a study to reduce anxiety, and keep blood pressure down in adults.
