Researchers develop multi-layer silicone membrane capable of mimicking human skin

Taking touch technologies to the next level, researchers have now developed a multi-layer, silicone membrane capable of mimicking the layers present in human skin.

The Skin-On interface, developed by researchers  mimics human skin in appearance but also in sensing resolution.

The researchers adopted a bio-driven approach to developing a surface textured layer, an electrode layer of conductive threads and a hypodermic layer. Not only is the interface more natural than a rigid casing, but it can also detect a plethora of gestures made by the end-users. multi-layer, silicone membrane that mimics the layers present in human skin.

This is made up of a sAs a result, the artificial skin allows devices to 'feel' the user's grasp -- its pressure and location and can detect interactions such as tickling, caressing, even twisting and pinching.

"This is the first time we have the opportunity to add skin to our interactive devices. The idea is perhaps a bit surprising, but the skin is an interface we are highly familiar with so why not use it and its richness with the devices we use every day?" said an Associate Professor who supervised the research.

"Artificial skin has been widely studied in the field of Robotics but with a focus on safety, sensing or cosmetic aims. This is the first research we are aware of that looks at exploiting realistic artificial skin as a new input method for augmenting devices," said  the lead author.

In the study, researchers created a phone case, computer touchpad, and smartwatch to demonstrate how touch gestures on the Skin-On interface can convey expressive messages for computer-mediated communication with humans or virtual characters.

"One of the main uses of smartphones is mediated communication, using text, voice, video, or a combination. We implemented a messaging application where users can express rich tactile emotions on artificial skin. The intensity of the touch controls the size of the emojis. A strong grip conveys anger while tickling the skin displays a laughing emoji and tapping creates a surprised emoji" said the researcher.

"This work explores the intersection between man and machine. We have seen many works trying to augment humans with parts of machines, here we look at the other way around and try to make the devices we use every day more like us, i.e. human-like," said a Dr.

Good news for burn victims, artificial skin could help them 'feel'

A research paper now suggests that a new type of sensor could lead to artificial skin that someday helps burn victims 'feel' and safeguards others. According to the study, the skin's ability to perceive pressure, heat, cold, and vibration is a critical safety function that most people take for granted. But burn victims, those with prosthetic limbs, and others who have lost skin sensitivity for one reason or another, can't take it for granted, and often injure themselves unintentionally.

Researchers wanted to create a sensor that can mimic the sensing properties of skin. Such a sensor would need to be able to detect pressure, temperature, and vibration. But perhaps it could do other things too, the researchers thought.

Speaking about it, he said: "It would be very cool if it had abilities human skin does not; for example, the ability to detect magnetic fields, sound waves, and abnormal behaviours."

Researchers created such a sensor with a silicone tube wrapped in copper wire and filled with a special fluid made of tiny particles of iron oxide just one billionth of a meter long, called nanoparticles.

The nanoparticles rub around the inside of the silicone tube and create an electric current. The copper wire surrounding the silicone tube picks up the current as a signal. When this tube is bumped by something experiencing pressure, the nanoparticles move and the electric signal changes. Sound waves also create waves in the nanoparticle fluid and the electric signal changes in a different way than when the tube is bumped.

The researchers found that magnetic fields alter the signal too, in a way distinct from pressure or sound waves. Even a person moving around while carrying the sensor changes the electrical current, and the team found they could distinguish between the electrical signals caused by walking, running, jumping, and swimming.

Researchers hope it could help burn victims "feel" again, and perhaps act as an early warning for workers exposed to dangerously high magnetic fields. Because the rubber exterior is completely sealed and waterproof, it could also serve as a wearable monitor to alert parents if their child fell into deep water in a pool, for example.

He said, "The inspiration was to make something durable that would last for a very long time, and could detect multiple hazards."The team has yet to test the sensor for its response to heat and cold, but they suspect it will work for those as well. The next step is to make the sensor in a flat configuration, more like skin, and see if it still works.

Crucial Tips for Protecting Your Bones

Osteoporosis is a disease that damages the bones, weakens them and makes them brittle and breakable. There is a significant decrease in bone density, and this causes the bone to weaken and increases the risk of fractures.

Our bones are always building and breaking down bone tissue, when the balance between building and breaking is changed, then the bone density goes down. With age, this problem has a horrible way of increasing in occurrence.

10 important tips for the treatment and prevention of decreasing bone density:

1. Yes, you guessed it - Physical activity.

Physical activity, besides being the best thing you can do for yourselves, helps the bones become denser by putting pressure on them, which may prevent the disease to begin with. We recommend using weights.

2. Increase your calcium intake -
Good sources: Green leaves, soy, sardines, broccoli and nuts. Regular bovine milk isn't that good a source of calcium because of its low absorption rate.

3. Increase your omega 3 intake - These fatty acids can be found in flax seeds of fish: Salmon, cod, and halibut - and are essential to keeping your bones strong.

4. Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake - Sorry, but coffee and alcohol 'release' calcium from the bones and damage the hormonal balance in the body important to keep them strong.

5. Reduce red meat - Seems like we're taking all the fun out of lunch, but eating red meat actually reduces the absorption of calcium in the body.

6. No smoking - Cigarette smoke damages bone density.

7. Eat nuts and almonds - These contain magnesium which is essential to the process of absorbing calcium.

8. Get at least 15 minutes of sun exposure a day - Exposing your skin to the sun a few minutes a day is the best way of getting your vitamin D, which function as a sort of glue and helps keep the bone density up.

9. Eat sunflower seeds - Contain zinc, a key mineral for maintaining strong bones.

10. Make sure you're not lacking in these elements, and take according to professional opinion:  Boron, Silicone, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and folic acid.

a device to help diagnose pancreatic cancer early coming soon.

In ray of hope for those at risk of developing pancreatic cancer, scientists are developing a credit card-sized, low cost device that could help doctors diagnose pancreatic cancer earlier and faster.
The prototype can perform the basic steps for processing a biopsy, relying on fluid transport instead of human hands to process the tissue.

"This new process is expected to help the pathologist make a more rapid diagnosis and be able to determine more accurately how invasive the cancer has become, leading to improved prognosis," said Eric Seibel, a research professor of mechanical engineering at University of Washington (UW).
This prototype of a microfluidic device has both curved and straight channels for transporting tissue biopsies. The silicon material is lightweight, flexible and transparent.

How does it work?
The microfluidics allows tissue to move and stop with ease through small channels without needing to apply a lot of external force.

It also keeps clinicians from having to handle the tissue. Instead, a tissue biopsy taken with a syringe needle could be deposited directly into the device to begin processing.

The new technology would essentially automate and streamline the manual, time-consuming process a pathology lab goes through to diagnose cancer.

The new technology would process and analyze whole tissue biopsies for 3-D imaging which offers a more complete picture of the cellular makeup of a tumour, explained Ronnie Das, a UW postdoctoral researcher in bioengineering.

Das and Chris Burfeind, a UW undergraduate student in mechanical engineering, designed the device to be simple to manufacture and use.

They first built a mould using a petri dish and Teflon tubes and then poured a viscous, silicon material into the mould.

The result is a small, transparent instrument with seamless channels that are both curved and straight.
The technology could be used overseas as an over-the-counter kit that would process biopsies, then send that information to pathologists who could look for signs of cancer from remote locations.
Pancreatic cancer is a particularly devastating disease. At least 94 percent of patients die within five years.

In 2013, it was ranked as one of the top 10 deadliest cancers, said the researchers in their study.
