9 Defense Mechanisms That Protect Your Body From Harm

There are some fascinating defense mechanisms our bodies activate that may seem a little strange, however they all have important roles in protecting our health 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Take a look:

Yawning

defense mechanisms
It's main purpose is to cool the brain down after it's been overheated or overloaded.

Hiccups
Hiccups occur when we tend to eat quickly, swallow large pieces of food or overeat, which may irritate our pneumogastric nerve, resulting in hiccups.

Sneezing
defense mechanisms
Sneezing occurs when our nasal passages fill with too many allergens, microbes, dust or other irritants. Sneezing helps us get rid of them.

Myoclonic Jerks
This usually occurs when you drift off to sleep and your body jolts for a second. In this moment your muscles spasm strongly, causing you to awake instantly. When you fall asleep, the frequency of your breathing rapidly falls and your pulse slows down slightly, relaxing your muscles. Your brain may interpret this as a heralding death, thus causing your body to jolt in order to save you.

Stretching
defense mechanisms
We instinctively stretch to prepare our bodies for the physical loads we expect to take on during the day. Stretching also works the muscles, restores blood flow and improves our mood.

Wrinkling of the skin
Wrinkles that appear on your skin and hands after a shower play a fundamental role. When your body encounters an increased amount of moisture it understands that the environment around you may be slippery. Your skin therefore begins to form wrinkles in order to have a better grip on smooth surfaces.

Goosebumps
defense mechanisms
Goosebumps reduce the amount of heat our bodies lose through the pores of our skin, making it easier to keep ourselves warm.

Loss of memory
Memory loss tends to occur after the most unpleasant experiences, whereby our brains literally delete terrible moments from our memories.

Tears
Tears act as a protection for the mucous membrane of our eye when a foreign object comes into contact with it. Scientists also believe that in stressful situations the body creates a new, powerful source of irritation in order to distract a person from the pain they are currently experiencing.

The Positive Side of Bad Habits

We all have at least one or two bad habits, but did you know that these habits aren’t necessarily bad, and in fact can improve your life?

Nail Biting – although it’s considered a bad habit by society, humans have been biting their nails since the dawn of time. Nail biting prevents your nails from getting too long and breaking or cutting you and it exposes you to tiny amounts of bacteria from residue under your nails. Research shows that exposure to small amounts of bacteria on a regular basis actually strengthens the immune system.

Fidgeting Keeps You Alert – fidgeting is actually your brain trying to improve its focus and alertness in the same way that yawning is its way to get you more oxygen quickly. Shaking your legs, twiddling your thumbs, doodling, et”c, all help you focus when you’re tired or bored.

Cursing – most people would frown upon swearing and cursing, especially around young children, but it also has appropriate uses; Researchers discovered that swearing in stressful times actually helps reducing your risk of a heart attack by half! Just remember that there’s a time and a place for everything…

Daydreaming –
daydreaming is the mind’s way to deal with complex problems by letting the conscious mind wander and allowing the subconscious to process and solve the issues. This also occurs if you’re doing a task which doesn’t require you to concentrate and allows your thoughts to roam.

Gossiping
– research performed in Brown University discovered that gossiping for even 20 minutes with a friend helped reduce tension and anxiety and boost the subject’s mood for up to 4 hours. Gossip is great at creating and strengthening bonds between people, but don’t use it for malicious and hurtful reasons.

Being Disorganized
– while some might think that disorganized people are lazy, the truth is that some people need a degree of chaos in their life and it helps them think outside the box. In a research performed a few years ago, students were put in tidy rooms and in messy rooms, and the ones in the messy rooms actually drew more creative pictures.

Sleeping In – endocrinologists recently discovered that waking up before 6:30am increases a person’s risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases. The best thing to do is go to bed when you’re naturally tired and letting your body wake up on its own.

Social Media –
kids and their phones! Actually, also adults and their phones! Everyone seems to be hooked on social media, checking their Facebook and Twitter all the time. The benefit we draw from it is quite surprising; we tend to make statements on social media and people will hold us up to those statements just like we will do for them. This forces us and them to stay on track and achieve our goals together.

Tantrums – expressing your anger in small amounts will reduce tension and stress, and is much healthier than bottling up all that anger and frustration inside. Kids know it better than us and that’s why they naturally do it. Just make sure you express your anger in a healthy way – punch a pillow, go off on a short rant, etc.

Watching Cute Videos
– if you think it’s nothing be procrastination, you’re dead-wrong. Watching videos helps the brain focus and complete tasks more effectively, and watching cute videos specifically increases our care-giving instincts and makes us take more care in the task we perform.

Yawning

This unconditioned reflex is a mystery that scientists have been trying to solve for a long time. Yawning occurs when we feel tired, sleepy or bored. There are several reasons why we yawn; some theories say that it is because we do not have enough oxygen, while others say it's our body's way of getting the nervous system working (like when we feel bored or tired). Another cause for yawning? We may also be feeling hot.
Fact: According to the Guinness World Records, the longest yawn ever recorded was by a 15 year-old-girl who yawned for 5 whole weeks.

6 Weird Signs That May Predict Heart Trouble Down the Road

Heart disease is still the number one killer among Americans, according to the CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention). What makes it so, is that it can be tough to spot, and very often, once the signs become recognizable, it is too late. Many a time, the first symptom is sudden death or a heart attack.

One of the best ways to keep tabs on your heart health is to frequently check your blood's cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Research has also discovered a handful of odd symptoms that might predict heart disease later in life too. On this note however, there is no need to worry if you do experience one of these symptoms. Just consider them to serve as a good reminder to visit your doctor and check your cholesterol levels.

Here are six weird signs that may indicate you could have heart trouble down the road:

1. Bad breath

Bad breath caused by gum disease should be looked into as research stipulated in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that it may indicate heart trouble. Gum disease promotes inflammation, which in turn stokes heart disease. Treating gum disease and keeping you bad breath at bay may lower your risk of heart trouble in the future, more research shows.
2. Yawning during exercise

To this day, despite science's best efforts, yawning remains a mysterious phenomenon. However, one study, conducted by SUNY Albany suggests that a good yawn may help promote blood oxygenation and brain cooling. It is therefore natural to yawn during exercise, especially on hot days. But, non-stop yawning during workouts may indicate that the body's built-in cooling mechanisms aren't working as they should. Research conducted on the matter indicates that a wonky internal AC may suggest a heart or circulatory issue.
3. Feeling light headed when you stand up

Feeling dizzy when you stand up, also known as 'orthostatic hypotension', most of the time lasts just a second or two. But if the light-headedness lasts for a couple of minutes, especially if you are younger than 55, this may suggest an underlying blood flow issue, according to a research . The study found that people who experience this kind of prolonged dizziness are 54% more likely to experience heart failure later on in life than those who don't.
4. A wrinkle on your earlobe
heart trouble symptoms

Traditional heart disease symptoms are usually diagnosed alongside poor cholesterol scores or diabetes. However, according to a recent study from the University of Pennsylvania, one indication of potential heart problems is a diagonal crease in either (or both) earlobes. The distinctive lobe crease is believed to signal arterial blockage and has long been linked with heart trouble - the Penn study is not the first to be conducted on this issue. It is sometimes referred to as Frank's Sign, after the researcher who discovered it.

5. Clear skin during your teens
Having acne in your younger years may be worth the embarrassment in your older years. A study found that your risk for coronary heart disease drops by 33% if you had suffered from acne. It has been found that higher circulating levels of testosterone during adolescence triggers acne flare-ups. Yet this factor also seems to protect you from heart disease later in life.
6. A stubby ring finger
A series of studies found that if your ring finger is the same length as your index (pointer) finger, you'll likely have a higher risk for heart disease in your 40s and 50s. Longer ring fingers in men is a sign of greater fetal testosterone exposure, which has been associated with lower rates of heart disease. Researchers pointed out that the connection may not be as strong among women. Nevertheless, if your ring finger is noticeably shorter it may be a good idea to keep tabs on your ticker.
