15 Habits You Should Avoid to Maintain Sharp Vision

Our eyes are pretty fragile, and even the slightest misstep on your behalf is bound to affect their health and subsequently - your eyesight, if not now, then further down the road. Environmental stressors, such as UV light, dry air and others can worsen your vision and contribute to eye disease, but so do excess strain and lack of sleep. Learn to preserve sharp vision for decades by avoiding these 15 bad habits capable of ruining your eye health.

This Collection May Interest You: Eye Health Tips and Vision Care Guides
1. Air Conditioning and Central Heating
Both air conditioning and central heating significantly dry out the air in a room, potentially causing a whole host of issues, especially dry eyes. And while having dry eyes doesn't seem very threatening, it is more dangerous than you'd think. For one, eyes devoid of a moisture barrier are more susceptible to infections. Dry eyes can also damage the surface of the eye, and chronically dry eyes can even worsen one's vision.
To deal with the issue, keep a working air humidifier in your bedroom overnight, or simply put a bowl full of water or two in your bedroom - this water will slowly evaporate, slowly increasing the humidity in the room.

2. Not Wearing Sunglasses
Similarly to why you need to use sunscreen when you go outside, you should also wear sunglasses on the regular to protect the surface of your eyes from UV damage. The truth is that the sun's rays are getting stronger and stronger, and constant UV exposure was proven to contribute to several eye diseases, namely eyelid cancer, cataract, and pterygium (a pinkish growth over the cornea). Doctors suggest wearing sunglasses year-round, even in the winter.

3. Using Makeup Remover Too Close to the Surface of the Eye
This is not to say that you should stop wearing eye makeup, or stop removing it from your eyes, but rather be wary of the products you use around the eye area and make sure not to get eye makeup remover inside your eyes. Eye makeup removers and face wash can contain a type of cleaning agent, a surfactant called benzalkonium chloride, which can irritate the surface eye and damage eye tissues, subsequently worsening your eyesight. Products intended for eye use and those that don't contain this ingredient are generally considered eye-safe.

4. Improper Use of Contact Lenses
Contact lenses require the strictest hygienic and medical guidelines to be safe for your eyes, you wear them directly on your eyes, after all. First and foremost, you should never sleep in your contacts or use them in water, as this can cause damage to the surface of the eye and severe, sometimes incurable, eye infections.
Some contacts are considered safe for sleep, but we wouldn't risk it anyway. Two other things we'd never risk is overusing contact lenses or using not medically-approved lenses, as in both cases, the risk of eye infection is just too high. Contacts can scratch your eyes and harbor bacteria, especially if they're not regulated - a recipe for disaster. Contact-related injuries and infection have been found to result in visual impairment in 20% of cases.

5. Sleep Deprivation and Apnea
According to medical research, your eyes require at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep on a daily basis to function properly and stay healthy. Overexertion may cause eye spasms (twitching), popped blood vessels, dry eyes, blurry vision, and itching eyes.
Even more serious health conditions are associated with sleep apnea sufferers, who are more likely than healthy people to develop glaucoma and can suffer from vision loss caused by a degenerative condition affecting the optic nerve called Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (AION).

6. Traveling by Plane

If you're not careful, you can pick up and eye infection or a case of dry eye disease, and the risks are more than doubled for frequent travelers, so make your eyes a priority if that's about you.

7. Using Devices for Too Long
All screens are bad for your eye health, especially if you spend too much time in front of them, be it a computer screen, your smartphone or your TV. The reason behind is that concentrating on a screen for prolonged periods of time is just too strenuous for your eyes, and the resulting condition is the already familiar 'dry eye', of course, but also another condition called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), characterized by eyestrain, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, blurred vision and dry eyes.
To prevent the development of CVS, set up your desk ergonomically, adjust the lighting and the brightness of the screen, and keep a healthy posture while using the computer.

8. Smoking
Believe it or not, smoking can affect even your vision. In one study, participants who were smoking 20 or more cigarettes daily were shown to have worse color vision than those who didn't smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day. Smoking is also known to contribute to more serious eye issues, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy.

9. Sleeping With Eye Makeup On
If washing your eye makeup off is bad for your eyes if you're using the wrong products, not washing your eye makeup off is very harmful, always. People often don't realize how much dirt and buildup can accumulate inside their eyes, and this is especially true for eye makeup wearers. Those who don't remove their eye makeup are in an even worse situation, as they smear that gunk all over their eyes while they sleep.
While mascara, false lashes and eyeliner can cause eye infections, especially if you don't replace your makeup products regularly, glitter eye-shadow can cause micro-tears on the surface of the eye, so make sure you clean all the eye makeup from your eyes before you go to bed.

10. Doing Yard Work Without Safety Goggles
Eye injuries are no joke. Unlike a cut, a bruise or even a fracture, you won't be able to regrow an eye, which is why you should prioritize your eye safety whenever you're doing something potentially risky for your eyes. Such things include walking in the dark, carrying sharp objects, such as scissors, and doing yard work.
When it comes to yard work or home improvement, the easiest preventative measure is to simply wear protective eye-wear, but when it comes to walking in the dark, you can just avoid the activity altogether. Also, be careful and don't make any quick or sudden movement when you have sharp objects in your hands.

11. Rubbing Your Eyes
Rubbing your eyes may give you temporary relief to allergies or tiredness, but try to abstain from it, and teach the little ones to do so as well, as eye rubbing can be quite bad for you. To be more specific, eye rubbing contributes to the development and worsening of a disorder called keratoconus, which is the thinning of the cornea.
This condition typically can result in blurry or double vision, astigmatism, nearsightedness, and light sensitivity, and it is especially common in kids.

12. Certain Medications
Unfortunately, many medications come with side effects that worsen your vision. For example, antihistamines, antidepressants, cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, birth control pills, and others can all cause eye dryness, whereas certain antibiotics, diuretics, and NSAIDs can result in sensitivity to light.
Other medications, e.g. asthma medications, Parkinson’s, and depression medications can increase the risk of glaucoma. If you are experiencing any eye or vision problems after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor to seek alternative treatments.

13. Overusing Eye Drops
If you need to resort to anti-redness or allergy drops more than the directions suggest or use it for prolonged periods of time, you might be actually suffering from another eye problem, most commonly dry eye, and to feel better, you'll need to address that problem with an eye doctor.
Over the counter eye drops are a fix for a brief problem, but prolonged use can do more harm that good, as your eyes get accustomed to the extra help and you might become addicted to the drops.

14. Poor Diet and Vitamin B Deficiency
Dietary deficiencies, the most common one being a vitamin B12 deficiency, can cause vision problems as well. Vitamin B12 deficiencies are common among vegetarians and vegans, and these can even cause blindness, in some cases. Instead, enjoy foods that your eyes will appreciate, such as:
Salmon, tuna, and nuts, high in omega 3 fatty acids
Eggs, high in B vitamins and protein
Leafy greens, e.g. kale and spinach, rich in lutein
Orange fruit and veggies, such as mango or carrots, which contain a lot of carotenoids.

15. Using Cheap Sunglasses
The fact that a pair of sunglasses are darkened doesn't mean they offer any or enough sun protection. Reputable brands will typically make UV reflection tests before selling a product to make sure your eyes are protected from the sun, as they should be. That's why we recommend you invest in a pair of sunglasses that offer proven UV protection to preserve your eye health and eyesight.

The reason why your asthma gets worse at night

There is nothing more annoying than having your sleep disrupted at night. But if you are suffering from asthma then waking at night coughing and wheezing might be an everyday affair.

Dealing with asthma is not an easy task, but for some people, it even gets worse at night. Nighttime coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness that disturb your sleep is referred to as Nocturnal asthma. This can make you feel tired and irritated during the day. Most of the people ignore it but nocturnal or nighttime asthma is very serious and needs effective treatment.

Why this happens
There is more than one reason that can make your asthma worse at night.

1. Internal Triggers
Some people have breathing attacks at night and they wake up gasping for air. Studies suggest that it can be due to some internal triggers.

2. Sleeping position
When we sleep our airways tend to narrow down, the volume of blood in the lungs increases and drainage from your sinuses increases, all these things can trigger asthma at night.

3. Air Conditioner
Cold air leads to loss of moisture in airways that can trigger asthma. You might have to wake up more than once at night if you are sleeping in an air-conditioned room. This problem intensifies during the winter season.

4. Dust particle
If your mattress, pillows, and blankets are covered with dust mites then you might have a problem at night. Pet hair is another common asthma trigger.

5. Mould
Check your room for damp patches as mould can cause irritation in your air passage and can disturb your sweet slumber.

The bottom line
If you are suffering from asthma then you have to be a little careful. Keep your surroundings clean and do not sleep in cold rooms. Apart from this, always keep your inhaler beside your bed before you go to sleep.

If your problem is intense then see your doctor. He might make some tweaks in your medicines. Ignoring the symptoms of nocturnal asthma might be dangerous for your health.

Air Conditoner Can Be The Problem For Your Clogged Nose

A stuffy nose can occur at any time of the year, and when it happens we're not always sure what to do about it or what is the culprit. Should we stay away from air conditioning or should we warm the house?

Well, it seems that these days, doctors believe that one of the culprits behind clogged-up sinuses, sinus pressure, and the complementary headaches might indeed be our old trusty friend, the air-conditioner.

There are several reasons why your AC can trigger sinusitis, and in this article, we will review all of them for you. But that’s not all, we will also tell you what you can do to rule out the harmful effects of your air-conditioner to fully enjoy the benefits of an air-conditioned home without its harmful effects.

The Differences in Temperatures and Humidity May Clog Up Your Nose

One of the leading cause of a sudden sneeze attack and a clogged up nose is the dramatic difference in temperatures between the weather outside and the climate indoors.
In the summer, upon entering an air-conditioned room after spending time outside, you might get a stuffy nose because the mucous membranes in your nose and sinuses start producing liquid to adjust the temperature of your body to the new environment.
In the winter, on the other hand, your AC dehydrates the air in the room, which can dry up your sinuses. This is bad because your sinuses need to stay moist to be able to clean the air that goes into your lungs. A dry nose can make you more prone to infections and allergies, and is also hard on sensitive sinuses, making it harder for them to heal from the infection.

The Mold From a Dirty Filter May Cause Allergic Reactions

The same dirty filter can sometimes be contaminated by mold, which can be dangerous because it is a common and quite reactive allergy trigger that can affect the health of people prone to allergic reactions. People with asthma and pulmonary problems should be particularly wary about mold in AC filters.

What Can You Do to Prevent Sinusitis Caused by Your Air-Conditioner?

1. Clean the AC filter regularly and properly. Ideally, you should clean your air conditioner's filter every month, but even if you don’t use it every day, you should still clean the filter every 3 months. Additionally, make sure the freshly-cleaned filter is completely dry, otherwise, it can grow mold.
2. Get a carpet. Carpets can absorb the dust and microorganisms such as bacteria or mold from the air in the room, so it’s a good idea to invest into one. You can then easily vacuum and eliminate them.
3. Avoid cranking up the air-conditioner when it’s very cold or hot outside. When entering your home from a very hot or cold environment, first turn the air conditioner on to a less dramatically-different temperature to let your body adjust to the change in temperature gradually. After half an hour or so, you can adjust the temperature to a comfortable level. Needless to say, the same rule works when you’re about to exit your home.

The Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when the tear ducts located at the top of the eyelids don’t secrete enough tears and fatty substances to provide the eye with sufficient moisture. The phenomenon is so common that it affects one in three people over the age of 65 and may be accompanied by distressing and painful symptoms. This problem, which may result from environmental conditions or medical condition, can be treated in both cases, and although the syndrome is not defined as a serious medical condition, it may cause eye scarring in extreme cases. The information below will help you understand if you’re suffering from the development of dry eye syndrome and how you can prevent and treat the problem.

What is dry eye syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a condition that can be caused by a variety of medical problems that cause dryness and irritation in the eyes. This may be painful, accompanied by a host of disturbing symptoms such as the false sensation of entry of a foreign object, itching, redness, accumulation of mucus in the eye or around the eyelid, sensitivity to light, chronic eye fatigue, blurry vision, and inflammation. The reasons for the development of this phenomenon may be due to damage to the makeup of the tears that protect our eyes, as a result of reducing the number of tears produced in the glands or from tears leaving the surface of the eye too quickly. Damage to tear quality and the amount produced are caused by various causes, including aging, the use of certain medications, various medical conditions, environmental conditions, use of contact lenses and the development of allergies.
Although we’re used to thinking of tears as something that is secreted from our eyes mainly when we are sad or excited, tears actually flood our eyes every time we blink. Tears are a fluid consisting mainly of water and salt, whose main function is to moisturize the eyes and prevent dehydration. Other functions include removing dirt, bacteria, pollutants and foreign bodies that penetrate the eye, creating a smooth corneal surface, and more. Tears are made up of three parts: an outer fatty layer that prevents rapid evaporation of the liquid, water, and an inner mucus layer that helps spread tears all over the eye. When there is a problem with the composition or production process of each of these parts, dry eye syndrome is caused.

What are the main environmental causes of dry eye syndrome?

Air pollution and cigarette smoke

One of the common effects on eye health is the environment in which we spend most of our time and air pollution. One of the important things to avoid when we detect signs of dry eye syndrome is cigarette smoke - and it’s important to know that smoke damage exists both for active smokers and for passive smokers. Cigarette smoke not only stimulates the syndrome for those who already have it, but it also increases the risk of developing the syndrome.

Fog, winds, fans, air conditioners, and air

In the days of fog and wind, it is recommended that people who suffer from dry eye syndrome refrain from leaving the house because these weather conditions worsen the symptoms of dry eyes. In general, dryness of the eyes requires avoiding wind or dryness and this includes avoiding exposure to fans, hair dryers, and air conditioners as much as possible. In addition to that, you should make sure to use eye drops before flights, as the compressed air inside the cabin may worsen the sense of dryness and the irritation.

Prolonged sitting in front of screens

Prolonged viewing of screens such as the TV, computer or smartphone screen, and even prolonged reading from a book, can worsen symptoms of dry eyes. This is because our blink frequency decreases when we look at and work in front of screens, and with it the level of tear regeneration and its diffusion on the corneal area decreases. Add to this the fact that we usually work in air-conditioned spaces with low humidity, which causes the evaporation of the moisture layer that protects our eyes. It is important that we take a break from using screens every few hours, step out into the clean air, and get back some of the moisture that our eyes so desperately need.

Outdoor sports and swimming in a pool

For those who engage in strenuous activities on the street or in nature, such as riding a motorcycle or bicycle and swimming in a chlorinated pool, it is important to keep your eyes protected from dust, wind and sand damage and to wear goggles or custom glasses to protect your eyes from environmental damage.

What are the ways to treat dry eye syndrome?

Hot compresses

In order to improve the quality of the layer of fat that makes up our tears, it is recommended to place hot compresses on the eyes for a few minutes, and then wash your (closed) eyes with baby shampoo. This will help the fat in the tear glands relax and soften improving the quality of our tears. Be sure to wash all traces of shampoo from your eye to avoid irritation.

Using a humidifier

An important recommendation that people who suffer from dry eye syndrome should adopt is using a humidifier in the home which infuses the air with the missing moisture and humidity. This is especially true during the winter season when the heating systems combined with low humidity make our eyes dry faster. If you don’t have a humidifier, it is recommended to place a bowl of water near your heating device to create more moisture in the air.

Eye drops and ointments to relieve dry eyes

There are quite a few over-the-counter medications on the market that are designed to help dry and irritated eyes and bring about significant, although temporary, relief for the disturbing sensation. These products include eye drops, artificial tears, and various ointments. It is important to note that some of these products contain preservatives that our eyes may respond negatively to. If you experience such a reaction and have to use eye drops more than 4 times a day, consider switching to one without preservatives, usually stored in disposable bottles. Eye ointments are usually designed to provide coverage for the whole eyeball and allow for long-term relief. However, the problem is that they may damage visual acuity during use, so it’s best to use them at night, before bed, and in combination with eye drops during the day

Dietary changes

According to a dry eye syndrome study, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the symptoms of the disorder, as these acids reduce inflammation in the eye and allow for more and higher quality tears. To consume omega-3 fatty acids, you can take supplements, or combine foods rich in them such as walnuts, flax seed oil, palm oil, soybean oil, chia seeds, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and krill.

When should you see a doctor to treat dry eyes?

If your eye care products aren’t giving you relief within a few days, it is highly recommended that you see your eye doctor. Sometimes this indicates a more serious medical problem which is causing the feeling of dryness, and should, therefore, be treated as soon as possible. If you have symptoms such as redness and swelling in the eye, unusual pain, eye injury, fluid coming out of the eye, joint pain accompanied by swelling, hardening of the organs and dry mouth - you should go for an in-depth examination of these symptoms.

CAR AIR-CONDITIONER AND CANCER !

This one is for all to read and then share...might   help save a life.
Now this is very interesting!  My car's manual  says to roll down the windows to let out all the hot air  before turning on the A/C. WHY ?

No wonder more folks are dying from cancer than ever  before.  We wonder where this stuff comes from, but  here is an example that explains a lot of the cancer-causing  incidents.

Many people are in their cars the first thing in the  morning, and the last thing at night, 7 days a week.

As I read this, it makes me feel guilty and ill.
Please pass this on to as many people as possible.
Guess, it’s not too late to make some changes.

Please do NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car.

Open the windows after you enter your car and then after a  couple of minutes, turn ON the AC .

Here's why:  According to research, the car's  dashboard, seats, a/c ducts, in fact ALL of the  plastic  objects in your vehicle, emit Benzene, a Cancer causing  toxin.  A BIG CARCINOGEN.  Take the time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car when you  open it, and BEFORE you start it up.
In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anaemia and  reduces white blood cells.  Prolonged exposure can  cause Leukemia and increases the risk of some cancers.   It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women.

The "acceptable" Benzene level indoors is:50mg per sq.ft.

A car parked indoors, with windows closed, will contain  400-800 mg of Benzene - 8 times the acceptable level.

If parked outdoors in the sun, at a temperature above 60  degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000  mg, 40 times the acceptable level.

People who get into the car, keeping the windows closed,  will eventually inhale excessive amounts of the BENZENE  toxin.

Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver.  What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to  expel this toxic stuff.

So friends, please open the windows of your car - give it  some time for the interior to air out -(dispel the deadly  stuff) - before you turn on the a/c of your vehicle.

Thought: 'When someone  shares something of value with you and you benefit from it,   you have a moral obligation to share it with  others.
The difference  between what you were yesterday and what you  will be tomorrow is what you  do today."
