Cancer Hazards: 12 Skin Cancer Mistakes to Avoid

About 20% of all Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they hit 70, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. Skin cancer may form as a non-melanoma (bad) or melanoma (very bad) type of disease. Whatever it may be, one thing is certain - you definitely don't want it. Worse, you may be inadvertently doing things to increase your risk. For starters, sitting out in the sun unprotected is instantly going to increase your odds of being diagnosed with a case of skin cancer. But, some less obvious reasons could lead you down a dangerous path. Here are 12 essential tips to bear in mind:

1. Getting nails done
 skin cancer

While you may not worry too much about getting your nails done at the salon, using UV rays emitted from the LED lamps at your nail salon for a short period of time could result in a life-threatening skin cancer diagnosis. This is what happened to a 20-year-old woman from Illinois, who was diagnosed with skin cancer. Her doctor said it was most likely caused by the regular gel manicures.

2. You aren't eating enough veggies
Eating plenty of veggies isn't just good for your health. It can help protect against cancer too. According to the National Cancer Institute, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale are broken down into indoles and isothiocyanates - two key elements that have been shown to prevent cancer from developing. Veggies also keep your immune system healthy. This comes in handy when your body is fighting off illnesses and diseases.

3.You smoke
Most smokers likely assume that they are putting themselves at risk for lung cancer. However, skin cancer is a possibility too. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, inhaling toxins can increase your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma on your lips by 52%. Since it affects 700,000 people in the U.S. each year, it is incredibly common.

4. You use a tanning bed
A vast amount of research has been conducted surrounding the dangers of tanning beds. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people continue to use them at an alarming rate. Just one session increases your risk of melanoma by 20%, basal cell carcinoma by 29% and squamous cell carcinoma by 67%.

5. You don't wear sunglasses

skin cancer
Sunglasses do more than keep the sun out of your eyes. They help protect your delicate eye area - including the very thin-skinned eyelids from skin cancer. Sunglasses should be worn all year round and anytime you are enjoying the sunshine. Opt for a pair that blocks 99 to 100% of those harmful rays.

6. You don't wear enough SPF
If you think that SPF 35+ is going to be enough at the beach, you are mistaken. In a new study published in the Journal of the American of Academy of Dermatology, researchers found SPF 100+ is more protective against sunburns than SPF 50+. It is also essential that you reapply often. Bear in mind that the higher the strength doesn't mean that it has a longer staying power.

7. You're not protecting your skin from pollution
It's not just the sun that can harm your complexion. Pollution is just as bad for you, as it is for the environment. Pollution can cause uneven skin tone, accelerated aging and skin cancer. To make sure it doesn't affect you, wash off your skin and wear sunscreen every day. Put it on immediately in the morning and be sure to spring for one that contains antioxidants.

8. You always sit by sunny windows
Whether you are in the car or not, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sitting in front of a sunny window doesn't just lead to wrinkles, it could also lead to skin cancer down the line.

9. You don't wear sunscreen on flights
People tend to feel safe from the sun in a plane, despite traveling six miles closer to it. However, according to one expert, that can really do some damage. Dermatologist Doris Day says “The fact is, flying at 30,000 feet [for 60 minutes] can be as dangerous as 20 minutes in a tanning bed.” So, if you're not wearing any sunscreen, pull down the shade.

10. You rely on the SPF in your makeup for protection
It's nice that your face makeup has the added bonus of SPF. But don't solely depend on that to protect your skin. Many products only have an SPF of 15 and since the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least 30 SPF on a daily basis, you might need to apply extra before getting ready for the day.

11. You're not careful with your spray tan
 skin cancer

Getting a spray tan is a better option than getting a real tan. However, after your appointment be extra cautious. You have a higher risk of free radical damage from those UV rays for up to 24 hours after bronzing yourself. After a day, you'll be fine to apply sunscreen as usual.

12. You're wearing shiny lipsticks
You may want to rethink the high-shine, glossy lipsticks. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, they basically do the same thing as putting baby oil on your body does - you become a magnet for UV rays that can burn and damage your skin. Opaque lipstick with SPF 15+ is a better option.

Nutritionist explains anti-inflammatory diet plan to lose 20 kg fast

Many of us often face trouble losing weight. Even after following different types of diets, exercising and trying every possible thing, the weight does not reduce. Despite doing everything, if the result is not achieved, then the mind gets disappointed. For women suffering from PCOS, losing weight is a very difficult task for them.

However, the task is not easy for celebrities either. But from time to time, Indian celebrities keep talking about their weight loss journey on the internet or social media. Recently, when Vidya Balan and Samantha talked about their anti-inflammatory diet and said that their weight is decreasing only due to this diet without doing anything, everyone was shocked.

It is believed that an anti-inflammatory diet is very beneficial in weight loss. So let us know how to follow an anti-inflammatory diet to shed 20 kg fast from nutritionist Shikha Singh who has recently shared the diet plan on her Instagram post.

Shikha said in a video, "Many celebs are following an anti-inflammatory diet for weight loss. But do you know how inflammation affects our weight and how an anti-inflammatory diet helps us shed kilos?"

She added, “If your diet has a lot of processed food, sugar and alcohol, or if you smoke, are under stress, or you do not get enough sleep and have a hormonal imbalance, your body may have inflammation. Your body may release an inflammatory chemical called cytokines, which disrupts the functioning of insulin and leptin, which are related to managing sugar and hunger. Such disruptions can lead to more fat storage in the body and drastic weight gain.”

Let's take a look at the diet plan:

  • For morning drinks take turmeric tea along with 2 soaked walnuts between 7 am-7.30 am.
  • For breakfast take multigrain millet roti along with green vegetables and green tea between 8 am-8.30 am.
  • For mid-morning snacks take one apple or orange between 10 am-10.30 am.
  • For lunch take moong dal salad with lots of vegetables 1 pm-2 pm.
  • Evening snacks include black coffee along with roasted chana between 4 pm to 5 pm.
  • For dinner have tomato soup with 50 gm low-fat paneer or tofu between 6 pm to 7 pm.
  • For night drinks take Ajwain tea between 9 pm to 9:30 pm.

However, before starting an anti-inflammatory diet, it is important to understand what causes inflammation in the body. Apart from illness or injury, inflammation is caused by an unhealthy diet, poor lifestyle, increased stress and cortisol hormones. But when lifestyle changes are made and an anti-inflammatory diet is followed, inflammation reduces to a great extent.

10 Reasons Your Eyes are Bloodshot

While red eyes may have people questioning your health, wondering if you're sick or upset, bloodshot eyes can be the result of many things. However, very often, they are a sign of another problem, such as dry eyes, too little sleep or even overdoing it on certain eye drops. Below are 10 possible culprits and how you can fix them:

1. Your eyes are dry
bloodshot eyes
Dry eyes become irritated and inflamed. In fact, it's this inflammation that is causing the redness. This eye condition is especially common in adults over 50, but it tends to affect younger people who spend a lot of their time looking at screens. This occurs because we do not blink as much when looking at a monitor.

Other symptoms: Burning, stinging, and a gritty sort of feeling, as though something is in your eye.

What to do: Tears can moisten your eyes, reducing inflammation and easing the redness. To prevent the problem from occurring, blink more often, especially when you are in front of a screen. You should also adopt the 20-20-20 rule to help reset your blinks, reducing dry-eye issues. So for every 20 minutes you are in front of a screen, focus on something 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. If your eyes are chronically dry, best see a doctor. They might prescribe eye drops that reduce dryness-related inflammation.

2. You have seasonal allergies
Pollen and grass may cause swelling and inflammation in the eyes, leading to redness. Allergies may also tend to make your eyes itchy. Consequently, you'll likely rub them more, leading to more inflammation and redness.

Other symptoms: Itchiness, sneezing, congestion, and watery eyes.

What to do: Apply a cold compress to your eyes for 15 minutes several times a day and consult your primary care doctor to figure out the best way to keep your allergies under control. They may recommend antihistamines, decreasing your body's response to allergens and easing inflammation. But as antihistamines may make your eyes dry, you may have to use artificial tears to prevent dryness and redness.

3. You're taking certain medications
Besides antihistamines, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and even pain relievers such as ibuprofen can cause dryness and redness. Furthermore, these medications can reduce blood flow to tissue in and around your eyes, making them dry and red.

What to do: To get quick relief, opt for artificial tears. For long-term relief, talk with your doctor who prescribed the medication so that they may be able to adjust your dose, or offer an alternative prescription with fewer side effects.

4. You haven't been getting enough sleep
When your body is lacking on sleep, your eyes are likely to appear bloodshot in the morning. Your eyes need to be closed for an extended period of time so that your tear layers may regenerate and replenish. Loss of tears leads to redness.

Other symptoms: Squinting. Your eye muscles need to recharge over night and if they don't get the rest that they need, you'll have a harder time focusing on things both close up and far off.

What to do: Artificial tears can help you re-moisturize your parched tear layers. Aim to get up to 7 or 8 hours of sleep, keeping dryness at bay.

5. You're drinking too much
Alcohol causes your blood vessels to relax. Consequently, this allows more blood to flow through the vessels in your eyes so that they appear redder.

Other symptoms: Headache, dehydration, nausea, and feeling like a wreck.

What to do: Opt for an over-the-counter eye whitening drop like Visine. This constricts the blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to your eyes making them appear less red. The redness should dissipate within 15 minutes. With this in mind, you shouldn't go overboard with eye drops either - read on to discover more.

6. You smoke or stay near people that do
Cigarette smoke causes the blood vessels in your eyes to constrict, drying out the surface of your eyes. When your body senses the dryness and lack of blood flow, it tries to compensate by dilating your blood vessels, causing more redness.

Other symptoms: Dryness may occur in the short term. In the long-term, blood vessel constricting effects of smoking (or exposure to second hand smoke) can increase your risk for macular degeneration and cataracts, causing vision loss and even blindness.

What to do: Ideally, take the steps you need to quit smoking. If not, seek fresh air - your eyes should clear within an hour.

7. You have pink eye bloodshot eyes
bloodshot eyes
This is contagious and can easily spread from one eye to the other just by rubbing your eyes. This infection causes inflammation in and around your eye, making it appear red and swollen.

Other symptoms: Itching or burning, watery eyes, mucus-like discharge, and sensitivity to light.

What to do: Go to your doctor and get your eyes examined in order to determine whether your pink eye is viral or bacterial. If it's viral, the best thing to do is to wait it out - unfortunately this may take two to three weeks. If it's bacterial your doctor will likely prescribe antibiotic eye drops, soothing your symptoms within a couple of days.

8. You just went swimming
The salt in ocean water will cause your eyes to dry, leading to redness. This may also occur in pools which contain chemicals like chlorine, killing off some of the good bacteria in your eyes, leading to irritation and redness.

Other symptoms: Your eyes will likely feel irritated.

What to do: Flush your eyes with a saline solution or artificial tears, washing out the irritating gunk and easing the redness. If you wore contacts while swimming, take them out and have them cleaned immediately. The next time you decide to take a swim wear goggles, keeping the salt and chemicals out of your eyes.

9. You popped a blood vessel
bloodshot eyes
Popping a blood vessel can occur if you were straining, like coughing intensely, or if you slept in a weird position putting a lot of pressure on your eye. It may also occur if you've experienced some kind of trauma - such as getting punched or being in a car accident. When a blood vessel bursts, blood tends to get trapped under the surface of your eye causing a bright red splotch, turning the entire white of your eye blood red. While it may sound serious, it actually isn't.

Other symptoms: Popped blood vessels don't hurt, though your eye might feel slightly heavy from the extra blood.

What to do: This type of redness tends to go away by itself within a week.

 10. You used eye whitening drops too many times
bloodshot eyes
Eye whitening drops can make your red eye problem worse. The drops work by constricting the blood vessels in your eyes, reducing blood flow. Furthermore, when you use drops on a regular basis, your body will adapt to the drops. When you stop, you end up getting a rebound effect where your blood vessels dilate, causing your eyes to look red.

Other symptoms: Symptoms tend to vary depending on the underlying issue that's making your eyes red (see above).

What to do: Use eye whitening drops once in a while, but refrain from using them every day for weeks at a time. If your symptoms of dry eyes persist, see a doctor to determine the real cause of redness.
