Natural Remedies to Banish Motion Sickness

Do you feel nauseous and dizzy every time you get into a car? Motion sickness may be a hard thing to control and can be very upsetting. While over-the-counter medications are available to help prevent motion sickness, there are proven natural remedies which work just as well. Here are six natural remedies you should take the next time you suffer from motion sickness.
1. Eat or drink ginger to prevent seasickness
Got a boat trip or a cruise coming up? Take ginger candies, non-alcoholic ginger ale or dried ginger in capsules with you. The antioxidant substances called gingerols in ginger has been proven to be an effective natural treatment for motion sickness, car sickness, and seasickness. In a study, it was  found that ginger was just as effective as the prescription medication scopolamine, which is used to prevent motion sickness.
2. Take vitamin B6
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the effectiveness of 25mg of vitamin B6 on pregnant mothers was tested to control vomiting from morning sickness. After three days, it was reported that 26% of patients taking vitamin B6 every eight hours vomited, while over half of the patients taking the placebo got sick. However, before taking this natural remedy, be sure to speak to your doctor.
3. Buy motion sickness bracelets
Place the raised plastic bump of the bracelet two inches above your inner-wrist crease between your two tendons. If you do not have a bracelet, press your middle and index finger at this point. This is the sixth point on Pericardium pathway and is utilized in acupuncture and acupressure to alleviate nausea.
4. Sit in the front or middle seat of the car
According to researchers, motion sickness happens when the body, the inner ear, and the eyes send conflicting signals to the brain. So, if you focus your eyes directly in front of you and look directly at the horizon, you can trick your brain into believing that you aren't moving.
5. Don't travel on an empty stomach
It is important that you do not travel by boat, plane or car on an empty stomach in order to reduce the symptoms of nausea. An empty stomach will only exacerbate motion sickness, so keep snacks on hand, but be sure to not overeat either. Drink plenty of water and eat small, frequent meals.
6. Try aromatherapy
Some sufferers claim to find relief of motion sickness in using essential oils. However, there is little clinical data to back this up. The CDC does note that stimulating your other senses can distract you from the motion. Recommended essential oils include ginger, peppermint or lavender.

Sweet Treats That Won't Make You Gain Weight

The moment we decide to follow a diet, we reduce the amount of sugar intake first. Studies show that this method helps fight against obesity and excess weight pretty well. Nevertheless, you shouldn't completely exclude it from your diet as sweet products enrich us with energy. Here we take a look at what kind of sugar can replace high-calorie cupcakes and other sweet treats that make us gain weight.

1. Sorbet
Sorbet (which is basically an ice cream without milk) is fat-free. It also contains fewer calories. Sorbet also comes in a variety of flavors, including frozen berries and other fruit which contains the same amount of vitamins as fresh ones.

2. Fruit
Fruit is a popular food and one that can be used in place of candies. Studies show that eating fruit doesn't lead to excess weight. However, if you count calories, you're recommended to eat a grapefruit (which contains 30kcal and 7g of carbs per 100g) instead of a banana (which contains 95kcal and 21g of carbs per 100g). To keep the sugar to a minimum try to eat perfectly ripe fruit as overripe ones contain too much glucose.

3. Berries
Berries come in a variety of forms - from cranberries to raspberries, strawberries and red currant which are all considered to be low-calorie berries. Cherries, pomegranates, blueberries, and apricots, however, do have high sugar levels. In addition, berries are also pretty good for you. Raspberries, for instance, remove excess fluid from the body. Berries also have a good effect on the digestive system and speed up the metabolism.

4. Jam
Essentially, jam is high in sugar. However, it does have its benefits when taken in its natural form. Jam contains a great amount of pectin, a polysaccharide that normalizes gastrointestinal transit and maintains the bacterial balance in our body.

5. Pastries
If you're looking to lose weight, people know that they have to stop eating muffins and cakes since they are high in sugar and calories. However, there are certain tricks that you can do to enjoy your favorite sweets. Try to replace high-calorie wheat flour with corn, flax, buckwheat, rye or oat flour. Use stevia instead of sugar and vegetable fats (such as olive oil) instead of butter and margarine.

Hypertension, and How to Prevent It

If you're above the age of 35, chances are you may have already been warned about the dangers of hypertension or high blood pressure. Hypertension is a condition that occurs when the force of the blood on the arteries' walls is too strong, which eventually creates health problems, especially those connected to heart disease. Our blood pressure is mainly dependent on our blood vessels. When they narrow, the blood pressure level rises (just like a garden hose being squeezed sends water more powerfully). Normal blood pressure should be 120/80.

Symptoms of hypertension
Unfortunately, many people won't show signs of hypertension, and it will only become evident when they either go through a test or have a health-related problem.
Common symptoms include Mild headaches, Dizziness, nosebleeds, shortness of breath and vision problems.
Common causes of high blood pressure
Kidney problems
- Age
- Obesity
- Stress
- Lack of exercise
- Use of certain drugs (cocaine, for example, alcohol for another)
- Certain medication (cold remedies, birth control pills, pain relievers etc.)
- Sleep apnea
However, there are a great many cases of hypertension with unknown underlying reasons, perhaps genetic, and they can be controlled effectively with certain home remedies and lifestyle changes.

Home remedies that will lower your blood pressure
1. Lemon Water
Lemon softens your blood vessels, and in turn, lowers your blood pressure. In addition, the vitamin B in it will help keep your heart healthy. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to a glass of hot water, drink it on an empty stomach. Try to drink 5-6 glasses of fresh lemon water every day. It would be best to drink lemon juice without any sugar or salt, you can always add a little honey if the taste is a bit too bitter.
2. Ginger Juice with Cumin
Mix a teaspoon of cumin powder with a honey and ginger juice mixture to create a blood pressure remedy. Add 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger juice to a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of cumin powder and mix well. Consume twice a day to lower your blood pressure.
3. Garlic
Garlic is a very common home remedy that reduces the cholesterol levels in our body, one of the main causes of high blood pressure. Garlic contains hydrogen sulfide, a compound that is essential to good blood flow.

To effectively lower your blood pressure, eat 5-6 cloves of fresh garlic every day, on an empty stomach. You can also extract the juice of the garlic by crushing about 10 cloves of it. Add 5-6 drops of garlic juice to four teaspoons of water and drink twice a day.
4. Watermelon seeds
Watermelon seeds contain a substance called cucurbitacin. This material helps widen the blood capillaries in your body and reduces hypertension levels. It also helps fight off arthritis and kidney diseases.
Start by taking two tablespoons of dried seeds and crushing them gently. Then add them to a cup of boiling water. Leave in the cup for about an hour and slightly stir it so it mixes with the water all the way. Strain it and drink 4 tablespoons of this water every hour of the day for quick results.
5. Curry Leaves
Curry leaves contain many medicinal properties and were found to be effective in treating high blood pressure.
Boil 25-30 leaves in a cup of water. Let it simmer down to room temperature and strain away the leaves. Drink this concoction early in the morning on an empty stomach.
6. Celery Leaves
A substance called 3-N-butylphthalide (try saying that 3 times fast) is found in high amounts in celery leaves and is a compound that can really help drastically lower your blood pressure, as well as reduce the stress hormones that cause the blood vessels to constrict in the first place.

Add one or more stalks of celery (or celery leaves) and make a daily vegetable salad that will help you really reduce that blood pressure. When consuming the celery, drink a glass of water for better results.
7. Onion Juice
A recent study has found that giving people who suffer from hypertension onion juice, reduced their condition considerably, compared to a placebo group. Researchers think a compound named quercetin may be responsible for this. Try to eat at least one raw onion a day. Extract the juice of the onion and add a teaspoon of it to a teaspoon of honey. Drink this twice a day, every day to lower your blood pressure.
8. Fenugreek Seeds
Make a paste out of fenugreek seeds that are said to be very useful in the battle against high blood pressure. Take 1-2 teaspoons of seeds and boil them in water for about 3-4 minutes. Strain the seeds and crush them (or use a blender) to make a smooth paste. Consume this amount twice every day: morning and evening, and always on an empty stomach. Your hypertension should begin to lower in 2-3 months time.

Note: Please check with your doctor regarding the regular use of Fenugreek seeds, as over-consumption may cause problems with circulation and heart rhythm.
9. Bananas
Bananas have zero cholesterol and are low in sodium. Try to eat at least 2 of them a day or add them to your meals. Other foods that are good for high blood pressure: orange juice, spinach, baked sweet potatoes, and raisins.

9 Subtle Signs of Skin Cancer

Although skin cancers that are detected early are almost always curable, things can become a lot more serious when they evade detection, to the point where they can become deadly. Here are 9 subtle signs of skin cancer:

1. Repeatedly getting a sore in the same place
A sore that doesn’t heal may be a sign of basal or squamous cell carcinoma, which are the two most common types of skin cancer. They often develop in the men’s beard areas and are associated with pain during shaving. If such a sore hasn’t healed within a month, then you must visit a dermatologist.
2. Pearly bump on the skin
Basal cell carcinomas can often look like unassuming “pearly bumps”. They can be pink, red, white, tan, black or brown in color. Other signs to look out for include irritated red spots, pink growths crusted, indented centers; the aforementioned sores; and white, yellow, waxy areas that look like scars.
3. A red, scaly patch that just won’t quit
Both basal and squamous cell carcinomas can show up as scaly red patches. Squamous cell carcinomas, in particular, can be a little tender to the touch. Furthermore, both carcinomas can feel like “irregular sandpaper” when touched. Squamous cell carcinomas can also present as sores that won’t heal – wart-like growths or elevated growth with indented centers that bleed.
4. A change in one of your moles
Although melanoma is less common than the other forms of cancer, it’s by far the most lethal. It can show up either as a new sport, or it can arise within an existing mole. Always be on the lookout for a mole that has changed in size, shape or color. A suspicious mole can also be identified by multiple or unusual colors, such as red, white, blue or black.
Use this acronym to track mole changes:
•   A stands for asymmetry. In melanoma, two sides of a mole often don't match.
•   B stands for borders. A melanoma usually has irregular borders, rather than clearly defined ones.
•   C stands for color. Melanomas are usually uneven in color.
•   D stands for diameter. An increase in a mole's size, or diameter, could indicate melanoma.
•   E stands for evolving. Watch out for moles that change over time.
5. Getting a new mole (when you’re over a certain age)
It’s uncommon for new moles to grow once you’re over the age of 55. If you’re over that age and experience a new one growing, be sure to head to a dermatologist to have it biopsied.

6. Moles itching or bleeding for no apparent reason
If you have a mole that just starts bleeding without you having any recollection of injuring yourself, or if it itches persistently, then you should definitely get it checked.
7. Suspicious spot on a part of your body not exposed to the sun
Melanomas can present on parts of the body that are almost never exposed to the sun, and most people aren’t aware of this fact. Sun exposure does, in fact, increase the risk of developing melanoma, however, it can occur in the most surprising of places, such as a man’s penis or a woman’s vulva. A melanoma can even present on the bottom of your foot. Make sure you check your entire body when doing a skin check, including parts of it that aren’t exposed.
8. See a doctor if you’re concerned about certain spots
If a particular spot is concerning you, simply head to a dermatologist for peace of mind. That doesn’t mean that it has to be seen to immediately, but you should definitely book an appointment as soon as you can. You should also keep in mind that melanoma and other skin cancers are not just cancers of the elderly.
9. Don’t panic, but don’t ignore
The key to the successful treatment of skin cancer is to catch it early. Even if a spot you’re concerned about turns out to be benign, it’s much better to have it checked out early rather than waiting six months only to find that the matter is actually serious.

Gout: Foods That Help and Hurt

Drink More Water

The food you eat may help you manage gout and ease symptoms such as joint pain. Start by drinking more water because dehydration might trigger gout attacks. One study showed that men who drank five to eight glasses of water a day had a 40% lower chance of flare-ups. But avoid sugary sodas, which may raise your odds of an attack.

Find a Diet That Works for You

Being overweight makes you more likely to have gout. So try to lose extra pounds -- it can help your symptoms. Talk with your doctor about how to make diet changes to slim down and avoid gout attacks. You may find that you can eat some foods without a problem, while others may make your gout worse.

Avoid Purines

Weight loss is the most effective way to manage gout, but a low-purine diet may help you, too. Purines are natural substances in food that your body breaks down into uric acid. Too much uric acid in your blood causes gout. Some foods, like organ meats, sardines, and anchovies, have a lot of purines and can cause flare-ups. But many healthy options, like beans, lentils, and asparagus, have less. Talk to your doctor about what you can safely eat.

Eat Plenty of Fruits

Fruits are full of fiber and other nutrients that can help you eat a balanced diet and stay at a healthy weight. Plus, they tend to have very few purines. Those that are high in vitamin C, like tangerines and oranges, may help prevent gout attacks. Some research shows that cherries or cherry juice can offer relief from symptoms. Ask your doctor if you should add cherries to your diet.

Choose the Right Carbs

If you follow diets that are low-carb or high in protein or fat, you may get too many purines. Processed carbohydrates like white bread and white-flour pasta have very few purines -- but they can make you gain weight. Instead, focus on healthy carbs with a lot of fiber such as oats, sweet potatoes, beans, and vegetables.

Choose Fats Wisely

Cut back on saturated fats, like those in red meat and fatty poultry. Instead, eat more foods rich in fatty acids, including cold-water fish like tuna and salmon, flax and other seeds, nuts, and olive oil. Fatty acids may help lower inflammation. And try to cut back on, or get rid of, any trans fats in your diet, like those in fried foods and baked goods.

Limit Your Alcohol

Booze has a lot of purines, so it may make you more likely to have a gout attack -- especially if you have more than one drink a day. Beer seems to be worse than other alcoholic drinks because it has yeast. But wine doesn’t seem to raise your odds for a flare-up, as long as you stick to just a glass or two.

Use Caffeine With Caution

Moderate coffee drinking is thought to be OK for people with gout. And for some people who drink it regularly, four or more cups a day may even lower the chance of gout attacks. If you only drink caffeine sometimes, though, it may raise your uric acid levels. Talk to your doctor about whether caffeine might trigger your gout attacks.

Enjoy Low-Fat Dairy

Dairy products were once off-limits to people with gout because they're made from animal proteins. But they're actually low in purines -- and dairy purines don't seem to cause gout. Low-fat dairy foods may even lower your odds of having the condition by more than 40%. During an attack, these foods may help you get rid of extra uric acid through your urine.

You Can't Avoid All Purines

Not all purines are bad for people with gout. A few foods that have a lot of them don't trigger the symptoms. One study found that peas, beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, spinach, and chicken -- foods that doctors once said to avoid -- may not be linked to flare-ups.

Types of Immunotherapy for Lymphoma

Your specialist may talk to you about using immunotherapy to help treat your lymphoma. It’s a new type of cancer treatment that works with your natural immune system to find and kill cancer cells in your body.
These are the different kinds of immunotherapy you may get for lymphoma:
  • Monoclonal antibodies
  • Immunomodulating drugs
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors
  • CAR T-cell therapy

Monoclonal Antibodies

Your doctor will get your lymphoma cells tested to see if they have certain markers -- proteins called antigens. You’ll get a monoclonal antibody drug that aims at the antigens found on your lymphoma cells.
Monoclonal antibodies are made in a lab. They’re designed to lock onto certain antigens that cancer cells make too much of. This means that they affect mostly cancer cells with little damage to normal cells.
Monoclonal antibodies can work in -
 1. They keep cancer cells from growing by blocking signals sent out by the cancer cells. Blocking the signals stops these processes of the cancer cells growing.

2. They can also bind to the cancer cells and trigger your immune system to kill them. They may do this by marking the cells so your immune system attacks them. Or they can block the signals the cancer cells send out to tell your immune system to leave them alone.

3. Monoclonal antibodies can be attached to toxins, chemo, or radioactive substances. They then carry these cell-killing materials to the cancer cells and lock onto the antigen. This leads to the death of the cancer cells, with little to no effect on your normal cells that don’t have the antigen.

Here are some of the ways monoclonal antibodies can be used, depending on the type of lymphoma you have:
Follicular lymphoma: If you have a large stage I or II, or a certain kind of stage III or IV follicular lymphoma, your first treatment will likely be rituximab and chemo. You might get radiation, too. Then, if the lymphoma shrinks or goes away, you may get rituximab alone as maintenance therapy.
You can get rituximab alone or along with different chemo if the lymphoma comes back after treatment or stops responding to the treatment you’re getting.
Ibritumomab (Zevalin) or obinutuzumab (Gazyva) are other monoclonal antibodies you might get instead of rituximab.

Mantle call lymphomas: You might get rituximab along with chemo as the first treatment for mantle cell lymphoma. You can also get rituximab as maintenance treatment or if the lymphoma comes back.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: You will get rituximab along with chemo for any stage of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). You may also get radiation afterward.
You may get a monoclonal antibody called pembrolizumab (Keytruda) if the lymphoma comes back or doesn’t respond to the treatment with rituximab.

Burkitt lymphoma: Doctors can use rituximab to treat Burkitt lymphoma as your first treatment or as a later treatment. You’ll get it along with chemo.

Marginal zone lymphomas: Both gastric and non-gastric MALT lymphomas can be treated with rituximab. So can nodal and splenic marginal zone lymphomas. If you have any stage of one of these cancers, you might get rituximab, often along with chemo, as one of your treatments. You may also get it if the cancer comes back.

Rituximab, alone or with chemo, might be the first treatment you get for lymphoma in your skin (cutaneous B-cell lymphoma). Doctors can also combine it with the drug hyaluronidase (this is called Rituxan Hycela) and give it as a shot right into the skin lymphoma if it’s only in one area.

You might get a different monoclonal antibody, brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris), by IV if other treatments haven’t worked. Alemtuzumab (Campath) is another option if the lymphoma comes back after other treatments. You might get it by IV or as a shot into the skin lymphoma.

Hodgkin's lymphoma: You may get a monoclonal antibody called brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris) if you can’t have a stem cell transplant or classic Hodgkin's lymphoma comes back after treatment. You might get this as part of your first treatment if you have certain symptoms and blood test results. This drug binds to the CD30 antigen, which is common on Hodgkin's lymphoma cells. It’s attached to a chemo drug, which then kills the cell.

You can get rituximab along with chemo and radiation if you have early stage nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin's disease (NLPHD) that’s causing symptoms or large tumors. You can also get it if you have more advanced-stage NLPHD, either alone or with chemo, and maybe radiation.

T-cell lymphomas: If your lymphoma stops responding to chemo, your doctor may talk to you about trying the monoclonal antibody called alemtuzumab (Campath) or brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris).

Immunomodulating Drugs

These drugs help your immune system work better, but doctors don’t know exactly how they work. The two drugs used are thalidomide (Thalomid) and lenalidomide (Revlimid).
You may get one of these drugs if you have one of these types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL): a T-cell lymphoma; or a follicular, marginal zone, mantle cell, or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. You might also get one of these drugs if you have Hodgkin's lymphoma that hasn’t responded to other treatments or that came back after treatment.
You can only get these drugs if you agree to take special precautions to prevent pregnancy because they cause severe birth defects.

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors

Cells have proteins on them called checkpoints. They help your immune system know the difference between good and bad cells. Lymphoma cells can make these checkpoints and trick your immune system into not killing them. These drugs help keep this from happening.
For example, PD-1 is a checkpoint on your T cells. When it binds to the protein called PD-L1 on another cell, the T cell is stopped from killing that cell. Your Hodgkin's lymphoma cells may make a lot of PD-L1. This tells your T cells to leave them alone. There are drugs that can block PD-1. This means your T cells aren’t turned off and your immune system can attack the cancer cells.

Classic Hodgkin's lymphoma: If the lymphoma has continued to grow while you’re getting other treatment that includes a monoclonal antibody, nivolumab (Opdivo) may be an option.
If you have a stage III or IV Hodgkin's lymphoma that’s not responding to chemo or monoclonal antibodies, or has come back after a transplant, nivolumab or pembrolizumab (Keytruda) might be helpful.

CAR T-Cell Therapy

This is a very new treatment used for some types of B-cell lymphoma. CAR stands for chimeric antigen receptor. CARs are designed to lock onto antigens found on your lymphoma cells. Each patient has their own CAR T cells made just for them.

To do this, you get some T cells filtered out of your blood to make CARs in a lab. These cells are multiplies and injected back, so that the CAR T cells travel through your blood to find, lock onto, and kill the cancer cells. They continue to grow and multiply in your body so that CAR T cells can go on to kill cancer cells for months, or maybe even years.

Your doctor may talk to you about CAR T-cell therapy if you have diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that’s not responding to other treatments. It’s also approved to treat relapsed or refractory primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, high grade B-cell lymphoma, and DLBCL arising from follicular lymphoma.
