Food addictives might be affecting your gut

A study has found that nanoparticles present in common food additive could affect gut microbiota in human beings. The study investigated the health impacts of food additive E171 (titanium dioxide nanoparticles) which are commonly used in high quantities in foods and some medicines as a whitening agent.

Found in more than 900 food products such as chewing gum and mayonnaise, E171 is consumed in high proportion every day by the general population. The study conducted on mice found that consumption of food containing E171 has an impact on the gut microbiota (defined by the trillions of bacteria that inhabit the gut) which could trigger diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.

Increasing rates of dementia, auto-immune diseases, cancer metastasis, eczema, asthma, and autism are among a growing list of diseases that have been linked to soaring exposure to nanoparticles. Co-lead author  said the study added substantially to a body of work on nanoparticle toxicity, safety and their impact on health and environment.

"The aim of this research is to stimulate discussions on new standards and regulations to ensure the safe use of nanoparticles in Australia and globally," he said. While nanoparticles have been commonly used in medicines, foods, clothing, and other applications, the possible impacts of nanoparticles, especially their long term effects, are still poorly understood.

Titanium dioxide consumption has considerably increased in the last decade and has already been linked to several medical conditions, and although it is approved in food, there is insufficient evidence about its safety.

"It is well established that dietary composition has an impact on physiology and health, yet the role of food additives is poorly understood," he said. "There is increasing evidence that continuous exposure to nanoparticles has an impact on gut microbiota composition, and since gut microbiota is a gatekeeper of our health, any changes to its function have an influence on overall health," he added.

"This study presents pivotal evidence that consumption of food containing food additive E171 (titanium dioxide) affects gut microbiota as well as inflammation in the gut, which could lead to diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer," he said.

Another co-lead author said, "Our research showed that titanium dioxide interacts with bacteria in the gut and impairs some of their functions which may result in the development of diseases. We are saying that its consumption should be better regulated by food authorities."

"This study investigated effects of titanium dioxide on gut health in mice and found that titanium dioxide did not change the composition of gut microbiota, but instead it affected bacteria activity and promoted their growth in a form of undesired biofilm. Biofilms are bacteria that stick together and the formation of biofilm has been reported in diseases such as colorectal cancer," he added.

Whitening products may cause tooth decay

While using teeth-whitening products can make your smile brighter, they might also lead to tooth damage, researchers have warned.

The study, found that hydrogen peroxide — the active ingredient in whitening strips — can damage the protein-rich dentin tissue found beneath the tooth’s protective enamel.

Human teeth is made up of three layers — the outer tooth enamel, an underlying dentin layer and connective tissue that binds the roots to the gum.

Unlike most studies which have focused on tooth enamel, the new study focused on dentin, which makes up most of the tooth and has high levels of protein — most of which is collagen.

The team demonstrated that the major protein in the dentin is converted to smaller fragments when treated with hydrogen peroxide. In additional experiments, they treated pure collagen with hydrogen peroxide and then analysed the protein using a gel electrophoresis laboratory technique that allows the protein to be visualized.

“Our results showed that treatment with hydrogen peroxide concentrations similar to those found in whitening strips is enough to make the original collagen protein disappear, which is presumably due to the formation of many smaller fragments,” said a researcher.

The researchers pointed out that their experiments did not address whether collagen and other proteins in the teeth can be regenerated, so it is unknown if the tooth damage is permanent.

Further, they plan to characterize the protein fragments released when collagen is treated with hydrogen peroxide and determine if hydrogen peroxide has the same impact on other proteins in the teeth.

Ingredients: Juice of 2 freshly squeezed lemons
1/2 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
1/2 or 1 teaspoon baking soda (more whitening properties)
1 1/2 teaspoon of honey
1 cup of warm water (to melt the honey)
A clean bottle or jar with a lid

Mix together all of the ingredients and give it a shake. Swish or gargle 1-2 tablespoons of the mouthwash for a minute after brushing your teeth or whenever you want to freshen your breath. Don't use the mouthwash more than once to twice a day (the lemon is very acidic).

Honey: This ingredient has a number of anti-bacterial properties that kill off all the bad bacteria in your mouth, instead of feeding them with sugar. Also, adding honey makes the wash taste better. Use organic or raw honey for the best results.

Cinnamon:
A miracle spice in every way, cinnamon gets rid of odor by killing off the odor-causing bacteria in one blast. The International Association for Dental Research found that people who chewed cinnamon gum had a 50 percent decrease in oral bacteria versus people who chewed mint gum.

Lemon: The last ingredient- lemon is strong, refreshing and cleansing, so it will wash all the hidden food and bacteria from your mouth. It also has whitening properties. Just make sure not to add too much lemon because it can erode your enamel if not used properly.

5 fruits for healthy teeth

Bananas -
The high fibre content of bananas helps remove other foods that may stuck to the teeth. The white component inside the skin and on the outside of the fruit is known for good teeth whitening properties.

Apples -
Renowned for keeping the doctor away, apples offer a myriad of benefits, especially if eaten fresh and crisp. They help clean plaque near the gum line while massaging the gums.

Oranges -
Loaded with the goodness of Vitamin C and calcium, oranges are the perfect choice for healthy gums and teeth. The citric acid present in oranges can help control acidity levels in your mouth, especially since it encourages salivation, the body's own mouthwash.

Watermelon -
Synonymous with summer, they are a great source of vitamin C. They are ideal for maintaining oral health. Eating watermelons helps brush teeth gently and massage the gums as well.

Strawberries -
They contain malic acid, which helps remove surface stains on teeth. Take a strawberry, mash it up, add some baking soda and apply it to your teeth. Gently brush off after five minutes for clean and bright teeth.
