This Surprising Symptom of a Heart Attack in Women Should Not Be Ignored

What comes to mind when you picture someone having a heart attack? You're probably inclined to imagine them doubled over with severe chest pain. While this may be one of the symptoms of a heart attack (alongside many others - these symptoms will help you recognize a heart attack months in advance), symptoms of a heart attack in women can actually be a lot more subtle than they are in men.

The Facts: The American Heart Association found that with regard to heart attacks, women are being under-treated. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, statistics show that 50,000 women died from a heart attack in 2014. It is also estimated that around 735,000 Americans have heart attacks each year.
So how do heart attack symptoms in women differ from men? A woman may experience pressure or pain in the center of her chest, but while having a heart attack, she may also experience jaw pain. Other symptoms specific to women include upper back pain, arm pain, an overwhelming sense of fatigue, heartburn, or a sense of not feeling right. But how can jaw pain relate to symptoms of a heart attack? According to the American Heart Association, if the heart does not give out a good signal, pain can radiate to the jaw, neck or back. However, it is still unclear why jaw pain and upper body discomfort manifest as symptoms in women and not men.

Another question that needs answering is why women aren't getting the treatment they need. The AHA have reported that women generally wait around 54 hours before visiting a doctor, while men wait about 16 hours. It may be because women are more passive about their health than men. It may also be because they have more barriers preventing them from doing so, such as having children to take care of.

However, waiting too long to seek treatment may also result in developing cardiogenic shock, meaning that your heart won't be able to pump enough blood. As a result, waiting too long could also mean that aggressive treatments may no longer be an option. Furthermore, women need to keep an eye out for recurrent symptoms. Statistics show that having another heart attack is actually higher among women than it is in men.

Heart attack symptoms every woman needs to know - and some are surprising

Heart disease affects millions of women in the UK, yet lots of us don't know all the symptoms of heart attacks.

According to the cardiologists, more than 70 women die from a heart attack every day - but often cardiac problems are misdiagnosed in women because they can present themselves differently.

We all know chest pain and shortness of breath could mean you are having a heart attack, but there are actually other lesser-known indicators you might not be aware of.

One woman's story has gone viral as she shares her experience of what it really feels like to have one - and some of the symptoms are not what you'd expect.

Posting on Twitter, the nurse told of how she had a 95 per cent blockage in her heart, but never had chest pains.

"I want to warn women our heart attacks feel different.

"The pain ran across my upper back, shoulder blades and equally down both arms," she wrote.

"It felt like burning and aching.

"I actually thought it was muscle strain. It wasn't until I broke into drenching sweat and started vomiting that I called 911."

Fortunately she lived, after having four stents placed an hour after arriving in the emergency room.

Her story is not unusual, the  doctors say that women's symptoms can differ from the typical chest pain - although it can be true for men too.

"A heart attack in women can present itself differently," a Prof. writes on BHF website, "perhaps as pain in the back between the shoulders. Or a patient may have an episode of nausea and vomiting without chest pain."

He said that the reasons for this are complex, but that estrogen production could mean that women have a higher pain threshold.

Unfortunately, women are also more likely to be misdiagnosed following a heart attack, so it's very important to be aware of the signs and symptoms.

These include: chest pain, tightness or pressure, pain in other parts of the body such as arms, jaw, neck, back and abdomen, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath and an overwhelming feeling of anxiety.

If you think you're having a heart attack, phone 999 immediately. Do this even if you’re not totally sure it's a heart attack.

A nurse is warning women that their heart attacks symptom is different !

A nurse is warning other women on social media after she suffered a heart attack she thought was just "muscle strain."

"I want to warn women our heart attacks feel different," she wrote. "Last Sunday I had a heart attack. ... I'm alive because I called 911. I never had chest pain. It wasn't what you read in pamphlets. I had it off & on for weeks."

"The pain ran across my upper back, shoulder blades & equally down both arms," she continued in the thread. "It felt like burning & aching. I actually thought it was muscle strain. It wasn't until I broke into drenching sweat & started vomiting that I called 911."

In the thread, she added that she is a nurse and an "older woman," though she didn't specify her age. She said that she had been helping a neighbor clean out a barn and thought the physical exertion had affected her muscles. At first, she took Motrin and tried to sooth the muscle pain with warm pack, she wrote.

Once at an emergency room, she was treated with four stents — small tubes used to prop open blocked arteries — and later discharged, she wrote.

As of this writing, the thread's first tweet has been retweeted more than 36,000 times. It's also prompted an outpouring of similar anecdotes.

"Same thing happened to me," another lady wrote in response to the thread. "Symptoms felt like constant indigestion, for weeks. I went into urgent care asking for a Tums the size of a Volkswagen but they wisely did an EKG and sent me to ER."

"I'm a healthy 31 year old, mom of 3. Had a heart attack just over a year ago," Twitter user  wrote. "I didn't go to the hospital for over a week — I had such bad upper back pain, also thought it was a pulled muscle. I went to my primary care doctor 4 times before she finally sent me to the ER."

Heart attacks don't always cause chest pain, especially for women

Chest pain and discomfort are the most common heart attack signs for both men and women, but women are more likely to experience other symptoms  like shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, unusual tiredness, and pain in the back, shoulders, and jaw, according to the doctors.

Sweating, dizziness, and lightheadedness may also be associated with heart attacks in women as  previously reported.

But people may chalk up more vague symptoms to less life threatening conditions  like the flu or heartburn, the cardiologist notes.

The doctor recommends calling emergency if you experience any heart attack symptoms,  even if you're not feeling chest pain.

And family physician  previously told  that women should tune in to any unusual changes they notice in their bodies.

"It is important to document any symptoms that are unusual for you," he said. "Many women state that they experience subtle signs weeks to a month prior to the onset of a heart attack. If experiencing any unusual symptoms, make sure to discuss these with someone close to you that may know your family or personal history, or be seen by a medical provider."

8 Kinds of Pain Linked to Emotional States

Any type of physical pain is associated with an injury, disease, disorder or condition. However, emotional turmoil can manifest itself in the form of real, actual physical pain. Your body and spirit are more intertwined than we tend to think. So, if you start to experience a physical ache that you cannot attribute to a tangible cause, chances are the culprit behind it is your emotional state. So, if you want to effectively treat that pain, you need to discover its root cause. Here are 8 types of physical pain that are caused by your varying emotional states.

1. Headache
If you suffer from severe headaches when things appear to be challenging in your life, your headaches are likely caused by stress. This kind of headache is extremely common and recurring. For this reason, popping a painkiller may not be such a good idea. Instead, you should try treating it by doing things you love or activities that relax you such as reading, meditating or taking a walk.

2. Neck Ache
Pain in the back of your neck arises when you find it difficult to let something or someone go. This can also be linked to an unwillingness to forgive and forget, be it yourself or somebody else. In this scenario, you need to remember that neither you nor anyone else is perfect and it's best that you move on, as opposed to hold on. If moving on is not an option, change your perspective and try to forgive people instead.
3. Shoulder Ache
If something has been bothering you a lot lately, this emotional blockage can result in pain in your shoulders. This pain will continue to persist until you stop ignoring what the issue you're dealing with is. To fix this kind of pain, you need to search within yourself and figure out what the problem really is. Once you discover the root of the problem try to come up with a solution that can end it once and for all.
4. Upper Backache
When you don't get the emotional support you need, especially from people you rely on, you may feel a stiffening pain in your upper back. This pain is caused by feelings of loneliness or being unappreciated or unloved. The only way to overcome this is to mix with new people who will make you feel good about yourself. This will help in ridding of loneliness too.
5. Lower Backache
If you find yourself embroiled in worries concerning your financial situation, you will experience pain in the lower back. Money issues can get bothersome and depressing too. But if you want to stop the worrying as well as the subsequent pain, you need to take matters in your hands. This means planning your finances more efficiently.
6. Elbow Ache
An achy elbow is caused by a stagnant life. That is why, at times, it is good to break the mold and do something different. Shaking things up in your life will bring about a much-needed change that opens you to new experiences. It is also one of the better ways to cure the pain in your elbows.
7. Hand Ache
pain to emotional states
While it may be rare, at times you may feel a tingling pain in your hands. This pain surfaces when you fail to connect to the people in your life the way that you would want to. It could also stem from associating yourself with toxic people. If this is the case, you need to go out and expand your social horizons by meeting up with new people.
8. Hip Ache
The hips and legs are closely connected. A pain in the hip can indicate an unwillingness to take a step ahead in life. You may do this out of fear of the unknown or thinking that your life may get worse than it is. However, you need to keep in mind that some of the best things in life happen when you are ready to put your fear aside and take the plunge. Don't be afraid to take risks and step out of your comfort zone as life may pleasantly surprise you.

Some Reasons that May Explain Your Pain

Stress and anxiety can wreck havoc on the body. Headaches are a well-known symptom of stress, but tense and constricted muscles, causing fatigue and cramps all over may be another symptom. Such symptoms may be a result of unresolved emotional problems.

In fact, Doctor Susanne Babbel says that "chronic pain might not only be caused by physical injury but also by stress and emotional issues. Often physical pain functions to warn a person that there is still emotional work to be done." So, according to Dr. Babbel's theory, what is your body telling you?

1) Headaches can be a result of battling obstacles and worrying about the little things.
Overcome it: The best way to deal with headaches is to take the time to relax. Dedicating some time to peace and quiet will increase your productivity afterward.

 2) Neck pain is often a result of built up resentment.
Overcome it: While it may be hard to forgive and let go, redirecting your attitude can make all the difference. It's not possible to always meet your high expectations. Focus instead, on the things you love, your unique abilities and your past achievements.

3) Shoulder pain may arise due to having to make tough decisions.
Overcome it: Perhaps you are feeling pressured by others, or maybe you are naturally indecisive. Whatever the case may be, lighten your load by sharing it with someone close to you. Even if they are unable to help, talking about your concerns aloud can alleviate the tension and enable you to come up with a solution.

 4) Upper back pain usually arises due to feeling unappreciated or fearing love.
Overcome it: A lack of support from family and friends may be hurtful. One solution is to communicate openly and reconnect with those who love you. Be friendly and don't hold back words of affection.

 5) Lower back pain can be induced by fear of loss and obsession with money.
Overcome it: While financial worries are damaging to one's health and relationships, it is important to remember that money does not buy happiness. Focus on doing things that you enjoy, then the profit will follow.

6) Joint pain in the elbows may be a result of stubbornness.
Overcome it: It is natural for humans to resist significant changes and fear what's new. However, most of the time, life is not as complicated as we make it out to be.

7) Pain in your hands may be caused by an absence of companionship.
Overcome it: Hand pain often arises in introverted people. Come out of your shell and dedicate your time to making new friends, enabling you to feel a part of the crowd.

8) Hip pain may signify a fear of change.
Overcome it: People become accustomed to routine and they become comfortable in a predictive lifestyle. But life is very much like a river, it continues to pass us by and change - at the same time, this is what keeps life interesting.

9) Knee pain can be a signal of inflated ego.
Overcome it: Instead of focusing on yourself, pay attention to the struggles of a friend, parent or coworker. Giving more of your time to others will enable you to feel more fulfilled.

10) Calf pain may arise due to tense relationships, especially when feeling possessive or jealous.
Overcome it: Instead of trying to control or change your partner, think of why you became close to them in the first place. If, however, you come to realize that the person you are with is driving you to lose touch with yourself, it may be time to move on.

11) Pain in the ankles signify that you may be stuck in a rut.
Overcome it: Our lives often tend to get busy, and as a result we forget to take proper care of ourselves. Perhaps we are holding off on fulfilling our dreams. If you are feeling stuck, change up your routine a little, or book a trip enabling you to de-stress and relax.

12) Pain in the feet could signify that you feel like a failure.
Overcome it: Perhaps you feel stuck, are unable to move forward or feel that everything around you is going wrong. To fight the pain, focus on the details of life and the beauty of the world. Be sure to use all five of your senses to optimize your experiences and focus on the things that interest you.
