Anxiety to back pain: Here are 11 heart attack warning signs you should never ignore

Is there something wrong with your body, especially your heart? Would you know it? Not all heart issues and illnesses come with obvious warning signs. Some heart issue signs don't even happen in your chest, and it's not always easy to tell what's going on in that vital part of your body. Also, as movies show, an actor having a heart attack clutch their chest, rolling back their eyes or groaning in the severe pain and later collapsing on the floor, it is not the same in real life.

The real pain you experience when you have a heart attack may be less dramatic, and sometimes you will get confused with acidity or back pain, but it can be dangerous. So here are 11 heart attack warning signs that may surprise you.

  1. Uncomfortable pain and pressure on the chest (sometimes crushing), squeezing, tightness, fullness on the chest. It lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back.
  2. Problems breathing
  3. Trouble sleeping
  4. Unusual tiredness
  5. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, shoulders and stomach
  6. Shortness of breath.
  7. Severe heartburn
  8. Cold sweat, nausea, vomiting or lightheadedness
  9. Throat or Jaw Pain
  10. Anxiety
  11. Indigestion

Beware of these heart attack signs, and don't ignore them. Even if you're not sure you have a heart attack, just get into the emergency department of a hospital and clearly explain to the duty doctor your condition that they can administer it as per the protocol.

And always remember the best way to prevent heart attacks or heart problems in the first place is to get your heart checkout (ECG and ECHO) regularly after you cross 40. Also, keeping your blood pressure (BP), diabetes, and cholesterol at normal levels will be good for your heart.

Feeling dizzy or lightheaded? Here’s why you should seek medical help

Dizziness is one of the common reasons adults visit hospitals. It is also one of the commonest symptoms encountered by physicians in clinical practice - and probably the most difficult one to treat too. Dizziness is the chief presenting symptom in about three per cent of primary care visits for patients 25 years and older, and in nearly three per cent of all emergency admissions, say experts. It is said that most astute clinicians can also feel a bit dizzy trying to solve the problem of dizziness in their patients!

The confusion starts from the fact that patients are often not clear about what they mean by “feeling dizzy”. Feeling dizzy means different things to different people, or even to the same person in different situations. It is further complicated as the causes of dizziness range from benign to life-threatening disorders.

A detailed history can usually classify dizziness into four main categories:
  • Vertigo (usually described as false sense of motion or spinning sensation)
  • Disequilibrium (usually results in off-balance or wobbly feeling)
  • Presyncope (generally described as blackouts or feeling of losing consciousness)
  • Lightheadedness (consists of vague feelings of being disconnected with the environment)
All these types of dizziness can be a sign of several underlying illnesses. That’s why detailed history and examination with appropriate investigations are mandatory, before suggesting that the symptom of dizziness is functional or psychosomatic in origin, said a consultant neurologist.

Common causes of dizziness

Causes of dizziness differ as per the age groups of the patients. For instance, dizziness in kids is commonly caused by simple reasons like uncorrected refractive error or migraine associated with dizziness. Benign positional vertigo and vestibular migraine are common in young patients, who are more tolerant of dizziness and often present to the physician late.

The elderly don’t tolerate dizziness at all and should be evaluated thoroughly due to the high possibility of serious causes like stroke. Elderly people with diabetic neuropathy, labile hypertension and gait problems experience dizziness more frequently and tend to have frequent falls due to dizziness.

When should one seek help?

Seeking help in cases of dizziness is essential as there are many serious and even life-threatening conditions associated with it. Timely diagnosis of the cause of dizziness is essential for proper treatment. For the same reason, trying non-medical channels of treatment without proper evaluation can turn out to be dangerous. The feeling of dizziness can be worsened by frequent travel, repeated jerks, inadequate sleep, and irregular schedules. Also, high-velocity sports or rides can trigger dizziness.

Treatment

The chance that treatment will be successful is totally dependent on the exact diagnosis of the cause of dizziness, perhaps, there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution available. That’s why recurrent or persistent dizziness should never be ignored. According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment may also depend on the patient's symptoms.

Control hypertension to stop your heart suffering silently

A heart attack is a medical emergency. However, there are conditions where your heart suffers an attack and yet can remain unrecognised. Known as ‘silent heart attack’, such developments can become more fatal than an actual attack as it does not make you aware of the increased risk of heart attack in future. Also known as silent myocardial infarction (SMI), it accounts for 45 per cent of total heart attacks and affect more men than women.Researchers have found that the risk of having a silent attack is associated with hypertension – it is one of the most prominent risk factors that may facilitate heart attack. An ideal blood pressure would remain between 90/60mmHG and 120/80mmHG; anything above 140/90mmHg is high blood pressure. In Rajasthan, nearly 7 per cent women and 12 per cent men aged between 15 and 49 have high to very high blood pressure. It will not be wrong to suggest that even if they do not have the other risk factors such as consumption of tobacco, diabetes, obesity, or cholesterol, these men and women are at an increased risk of getting a silent heart attack as they age.

High blood pressure and silent heart attack

What we eat and how we use the calories we take make a lot of difference in maintaining our heart health. Our modern, urban lifestyle makes way for food that is high in calorie but low in nutrient due to increased amount of refined flour, sugar, salt, and trans-fat. Besides, most of people live a sedentary life with low physical movement and exercises. As a result, there is a sustain build-up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances (together known as plaque) in the arteries that gradually narrows the arteries. This causes excess strain on the arteries resulting in its damage, a development known as atherosclerosis. As plaques harden the arteries, blood clots become more likely. If blood clots or plaque block the artery, the flow of blood through the heart muscle is interrupted, depriving the muscle of oxygen and nutrients. The resultant damage or death of part of the heart muscle causes a heart attack (also known as myocardial infarction or MI). In case of a silent attack, the unidentified scarring and damage to the heart puts the person at greater risk of other heart problems. In absence of treatment, the condition may continue disrupting blood flow to the heart, so the impact could potentially be greater.

Warning signs and preventive measures
It is not true that silent heart attacks are asymptomatic – some people have symptoms, but they just do not recognize the sensations coming from their heart. The symptoms can be mild and brief, and hence, many often confuse them for regular discomfort or another less serious problem, and ignore them. The two most common problems reported are indigestion and muscle pain, where the actual cause is reduced blood flow to the heart. People may also experience nausea or excessive sweating during a heart attack which are categorised as atypical symptoms.

In case you have any of the risk factors for heart attack, seek immediate medical attention if you experience one or more of the following:

1) Discomfort in the centre of the chest for several minutes, or intermittent (goes away and comes back). It can feel like an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, or pain.

2) Discomfort in other upper-body, such as arms, the neck, the back, the jaw, or the stomach.

3)  Shortness of breath before or during discomfort.

4) Breaking out in a cold sweat, feeling nauseated or lightheaded.

Prevention mechanisms involve health screening to identify any existing artery blockages, and getting rid of any risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and smoking through dietary and lifestyle changes. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), an eating plan to lower or control high blood pressure, can be a good starting point. Besides, just 20 minutes of exercise a day can significantly reduce your risk since sedentary increases the risk of death almost 3 times compared to being overweight but active.

5 common side effects of acupuncture everyone should know

These symptoms are quite common
Acupuncture is a process of inserting thin needles in specific points of the body to regulate the flow of energy or Qi. It is a natural and safe practice to get relief from different kinds of medical conditions. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged that acupuncture therapy is effective in treating 47 medical conditions including back pain, acne, insomnia, asthma, infertility, obesity, and irritable colon syndrome.

It is a low-risk, safe and effective procedure, provided that it is performed by a licensed practitioner. But like any other procedure, there some common post-acupuncture effect. Though these symptoms are slightly uncomfortable, they are completely normal and people should not freak out. They are indications that the energy is moving through the body and the treatment is working.

Here are some common side-effects of acupuncture one must know about before taking the treatment.
1. Fatigue-- Some people feel exhausted after acupuncture. This generally disappears a few hours after taking the treatment, but for some people, it lasts for up to three days. This is quite common at the beginning of the session and one must not worry about it. It is actually a warning sign that your body needs rest and you need to take care of it. Only acupuncture cannot heal you completely, you need some self-care also.

2 .Soreness---The body parts were the needles are inserted can feel a little sore after the treatment. This happens commonly in sensitive areas like hands, feet or large intestine. Usually, the soreness disappears after 24 hours from the treatment, but in some cases, it may last for a few days. Muscle twitching is also common post acupuncture.

3. Bruising--- Slight bruising at the needling site is also very common after acupuncture. This happens due to the collection of blood at the site where the needle punctures the skin. Bruising lasts longer than soreness, but still, there is nothing to worry about it.

4. Lightheadedness---- Few people also experience lightheadedness post-treatment. If you feel so, then take some rest after taking the treatment. Do not get up immediately after the treatment, lay down on the acupuncture table for some time and take some deep breath. Also, to avoid such a situation, always eat something before your session.

5. Emotional outburst-- Sometimes people cry or feel too emotional during acupuncture. This does not happen because the treatment is too painful. It is because of the release of certain energy, which may lead to an emotional outburst. Acupuncture helps to heal both your physical and mental issues, so the emotional release is also a sign that the treatment is working.
