Suffering from Anxiety? Learn to Sit Properly!

Mental health is a sensitive thing… When it comes to physical health, unless you have some kind of infection that comes from outside, the rest of the ailments are all coming from within us. What is coming from within you, is it your responsibility? If your body is creating an ailment from within, is it your responsibility to fix it?

Is it not true that any number of people who lie in bed like a potato till noon time are suffering from many ailments? They thought others are idiots who get up at 5 o' clock in the morning and run, swim, play, or do something else. They thought they were really enjoying life, just eating and sleeping. But after some time, it takes a toll on the system. Then they think it is someone’s fortune to have good health, while they have ill health. No! Health is created from within. If an invasion happens from outside in the form of an infection, that is a different matter.

When it comes to mental health, it is far more sensitive to say this, but still – if what happens to your body is your responsibility, is what happens to your mind not your responsibility? There may be many contributing factors. Even physical ill health may be caused due to many factors. The same may be true with mental health too. But we need to separate sadness from psychological illnesses. You cannot go to your doctor and fix your sadness; he may also be sad.

If you are medically ill, they can fix you to some extent with medication, which is a continuous manipulation of chemistry. But the most sophisticated chemical factory is right here [in the human body]. Suppose your chemistry was in your hands, would you cause anxiety or ecstasy? Definitely, your choice would be ecstasy, the highest level of pleasantness.

The problem is just this – your chemistry is out of control, for whatever reason. There may be genetic patterns, there may be pathological reasons, there may be outside stimuli, many things. But still, is it not your fundamental responsibility to take charge of your physical and mental health? The moment you think it is not yours, stalemate – it is completely out of your hands. If you see that it is your responsibility, everything may not be fixed tomorrow morning, but you can start moving towards well-being.

This is very important – the responsibility of who you are, what you are, what you are not, must move to you. This is my fundamental mission: from religion to responsibility. Religion means responsibility is up there in heaven for everything that goes wrong in your life. The problem is you are on a round planet and the damn thing is spinning. Nowhere in the cosmos is it marked “This side up.” If you don’t even know which way is up, inevitably, you are looking up in the wrong direction.

How come something “up there” is responsible for what you are? It is time we take this responsibility – then we can do the best we can do. Will everyone on the planet be of the same level of physical and mental health? No, that will never happen. But are we doing the best we can about ourselves? That is most important. What we can do, must happen. If we do not do what we cannot do, there is no problem. But if we do not do what we can do, we are a disaster.

There are simple ways to bring balance to the system. There is chemistry; there are various glandular functions happening in the body. The simplest thing is you just learn to sit properly. Sit in such a way that the body does not need your muscular support, that it is so well balanced that if it sits, it simply sits. Just do this for a few hours a day, and you will see – you will feel much better. There are other more complex processes that you can do to come out of this problem. But at least try this much – geometrically, keep yourself in such a way that there is no stress in the system.

Initially, it looks like there is an effort, but once you sit like this, you see that without effort, without stressing any particular part, the body just stays there. Geometry is most important. This is true of anything physical in the universe – how efficiently something functions depends on how well-structured it is, geometrically. Let’s say an engine, for example. If you call something a really good engine, it means it is geometrically well-aligned; there is no friction. If you call a building well-designed, it means it is well-structured, geometrically.

It is similar with this body and with the entire cosmos. Right now, the planets are going around the Sun. Are they handled with steel cables or something? It is just the geometry. If the solar system goes off its geometric alignment, it is finished. Only because of perfection of geometry, it is working. Similarly with your body: On one level, the whole system of yoga is about getting your physical, geometry aligned with the cosmic geometry, so that being here becomes absolutely effortless.

Whether you name it stress, anxiety, or whatever else – essentially, there is friction in the system. So it is important that first, the system is geometrically well-aligned, and next, it must be properly lubricated. There are ways to do this. Where there is geometrical perfection, there is no effort; there is no friction. That is what you have to bring into your system. Do not allow these small things to take over your life. One little anxiety bothering you all the time can limit and destroy the process of your life. This must be fixed as early as possible.

Yogasanas are a way of aligning the inner system and adjusting to the celestial geometry, thereby becoming in sync with the existence and naturally achieving a chemistry of health, joy and above all, balance. Find a yogasanas class closer to you, to enjoy its benefits.

28 Things We HAVE to Stop Doing to Ourselves

For many years, I was my own worst enemy. I surrounded myself with toxic people, adopted unhealthy habits, and behaved like none of this had any consequences. Boy, was I wrong! I have made some changes in my life and my behavior, and the results were astounding. I now want to share these changes with you, in the hope that it will help you too.

1. Don’t associate with the wrong people
People who make you feel like you’re not worth their time, who treat you like you’re beneath them, or who never back you up when you need them to are not people you should spend time with. True friends will make time for you and stick with you through thick and thin.

2. Stop avoiding your problems
It may be the easy thing to do in the short term, but in the long run, you’ll just face them again and again. It’s better to tackle hardship head-on. You probably won’t solve your problems instantly, but the process is what counts – learn from your mistakes, adapt and grow. Eventually, it’ll make you a better, stronger person.

3. Don’t lie to yourself
Honesty is the best policy, and being honest with yourself is the most important part of this policy. When you lie to yourself, you know that you’re lying, so it’s pointless and will make you feel like a disingenuous person. Don’t do it.

4. Don’t ignore your own needs
You may want to be there for all of your friends, all the time, or you may think that your children’s needs come before your happiness. They don’t. If you suppress your needs, you’ll become tired, because fighting a need is tiresome, and you’ll end up unhappy at best and severely depressed at worst. Take some “me time” - indulge in a hobby or passion. It’s worth it.

5. Be yourself
Trying to be someone you’re not is hard work, and ultimately, you’ll always be afraid others will find out. The most gratifying relationships are with people who appreciate you for who you are, not who you want others to think you are.

6. Let go of the past
It cannot be changed, so learn from it and get on with it.
7. You can make mistakes
“To err is human, to forgive is divine” – we all make mistakes, and no one is perfect. The only way to make no mistakes is to do nothing, and people who are afraid of mistakes are often paralyzed by that fear. The more things you avoid out of fear, the more regrets you’ll end up having.

8. Let bygones be bygones
Staying up late at night, thinking of all of the things you did wrong, all of the conversations that could have gone differently if you’d have said (or hadn't said) that one thing? You’re wasting your time and energy. Past mistakes are done and gone - you can learn from them, make amends, and move on. The knowledge learned from the mistakes you made in the past are helping to shape your future. They will end up making you a better person.

9. Money can’t buy you happiness
That new TV, shiny car, those diamond earrings – they may make you happy for a few minutes, a few days or even a couple of years, but true happiness comes from within. Follow your passions and enjoy life – that will make you truly happy.

10. Happiness is in you, not in other people
Other people are looking for happiness just like you, they may like to join you for the ride, but the only person responsible for your happiness - is you.

11. A rolling stone gathers no moss
Problems and fears can paralyze you and get you stuck. You may need to stop over-thinking and try a different approach, but always take decisive action once you do. Sure, you’ll make mistakes, but at least you won’t be stuck anymore.

12. Don’t get into a relationship just because you’re lonely
A relationship requires two people who are both ready and willing to be in a relationship. Loneliness may be a terrible feeling, but being with the wrong person ends up feeling even worse. You’ll find the right person as long as you’re true to yourself.
13. Don’t wait until you’re “ready”
Life will always find ways to surprise you. Opportunities arise when you least expect them. You may never be ready, but don’t let it stop you. When an opportunity comes knocking – take it. When you need to do something – do it. Don’t get stuck in your comfort zone.
14. Old relationships shouldn’t affect new relationships
Even if your last relationship (or relationships) ended in heartbreak, don’t let it prevent you from entering a new one. A new person may help you mend that broken heart and bring out the best in you.

15. Life is not a competition
Stop comparing yourself to other people. There will always be someone who seems better looking, smarter, richer, or more talented. Nobody is perfect, including you. Your success is your own - between you and yourself.
16. Self-pity and complaints will get you nowhere
Wallowing in your own misery and constantly complaining doesn’t solve your problems, and also tends to push people away. Consider every time something bad happened, and find the good that came out of it. You’ll realize that hardship is just a matter of perspective.

17. Grudges are bad for your health
Holding on to anger and hate will push people away, and end up hurting you and your loved ones. To forgive doesn’t mean ignoring what was done to you, but rather to acknowledge it and refuse to let it dampen your happiness. Also, remember to forgive yourself as well.

18. Don’t let others make you stoop to their level
“Refuse to lower your standards to accommodate those who refuse to raise theirs.”
19. Stop wasting time on justifying yourself
Your friends don’t require explanations, and enemies won’t care. As long as you know in your heart that you are right, stop apologizing.

20. If something doesn’t work, try a different approach
Albert Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

21. Small moments count
We tend to remember only the big moments, but the majority of life occurs in small doses. A shooting star, a moment of joy, the last rays of a sunset – these are the fillings of life’s cake, and it’s the best part.
22. Perfection is impossible
No one and nothing is perfect, and perfectionists are often the most frustrated people in the world.

23. Don’t separate optimism from realism
Sometimes things fall apart, and that’s okay. Sometimes you feel weak, and that’s also okay. You can’t pretend that everything is fine when it clearly isn’t, so don’t avoid the truth – embrace it.

24. The easiest choice is not always the best one
Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, and the easy way out often leaves you feeling empty. Dare. Take risks. A truly extraordinary life is never an easy one.

25. Take responsibility for your actions  The only person you can control in this world is you. Other people can’t make your dreams come true for you, nor can they take the blame for your mistakes. Don’t give other people power over you.

26. Don’t make yourself sick with worry
Worrying doesn’t solve problems, but it definitely can create new ones. If you find yourself worrying about something, ask yourself if it will really impact you in the future – if it doesn’t, it’s not worth worrying about.
  27. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want
A positive approach helps in two ways – it aids with your happiness and helps you solve problems faster than a negative one.

28. Remember to be grateful
When you wake up each morning, be thankful that you’re alive, appreciate each day and be grateful for what you’ve got. In other parts of the world, people may not be so lucky.

Battered Woman Syndrome

Serious, long-term domestic abuse can result in a mental disorder called battered woman syndrome. Battered woman syndrome, which is also sometimes called battered wife syndrome, is considered a subcategory of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

With battered woman syndrome, a woman may develop a learned helplessness that causes her to believe she deserves the abuse and that she can’t get away from it. In many cases, it’s why women don’t report their abuse to police or avoid telling friends and family what’s really going on.
Battered woman syndrome is serious, which is why it’s taken into account in homicide cases when women murder their abusive partners.

Stages

There are four stages that women who develop battered woman syndrome typically go through:
  1. Denial: The woman is unable to accept that she’s being abused, or she justifies it as “just being that once.”
  2. Guilt: She believes she has caused the abuse.
  3. Enlightenment: In this phase, she realizes that she didn’t deserve the abuse and acknowledges that her partner has an abusive personality.
  4. Responsibility: She accepts that only the abuser holds responsibility. In many cases, this is when she’ll try to escape the relationship.
Some women in abusive relationships never make it past the first 2 or 3 stages, as domestic violence can be fatal.

How does it develop?

Battered woman syndrome is caused by sustained and serious domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse typically follows an extremely predictable cycle, as follows:
  • The abuser will win over the new partner, often moving quickly into a relationship with tactics like “love-bombing,” grand romantic gestures, and pressuring for commitment early.
  • The abuser will be emotionally or physically abusive. This often starts small, like a slap instead of a punch, or punching the wall next to their partner.
  • The abuser will feel guilty, swearing they’ll never do it again, and be overtly romantic to win their partner over.
  • There will be a temporary “honeymoon” period, where the abuser is on their best behavior, luring their partner into thinking that they’re safe and things really will be different.
  • Abuse occurs, starting the cycle all over again.
Women become trapped in abusive relationships for many reasons, which can include:
  • financial dependence on the abuser, which is often manufactured by the abuser
  • wanting to have a complete family unit for their children’s sake
  • being afraid to leave
  • disbelief or denial that the partner is actually abusive
  • severe depression or low self-esteem that makes them think the abuse is their fault
  • believing that if the abuser loves them, it’s okay, and they can change the behavior
As a woman becomes trapped in the cycle of abuse, battered woman syndrome can develop. This syndrome makes it difficult for women to regain control.

What are the signs?
Battered woman syndrome results in several distinct symptoms. A woman in an abusive relationship may:
  • think the abuse is her fault
  • hide the abuse from friends and family
  • fear for her life or the lives of her children
  • irrationally believe that the abuser is all-knowing and can see her every movement
  • be afraid and never know what side of their partner they’ll see that day — a loving partner or an abuser
If you’re concerned about a family member or friend, watch for several important symptoms that could signal she’s in an abusive relationship and needs help. These include:
  • withdrawing and making excuses not to see friends or family or do activities they once did (this can be something the abuser is controlling)
  • seeming anxious around their partner or afraid of their partner
  • having frequent bruises or injuries they lie about or can’t explain
  • having limited access to money, credit cards, or a car
  • showing an extreme difference in personality
  • getting frequent calls from a significant other, especially calls that require them to check in or that make them seem anxious
  • having a partner who has a temper, is easily jealous, or very possessive
Pay attention to these signs. You should also watch for clothing that could be hiding bruises, like long-sleeve shirts in the summer.

Short-term and long-term side effects

Several serious side effects are associated with battered woman syndrome.
Short-term side effects that may be seen immediately include:

depression
lowered self-esteem
damaged relationships with friends and family
severe anxiety
feeling worthless or hopeless
feeling like they have no control

Research has shown that battered woman syndrome and domestic abuse can result in long-term health consequences that can last for decades. Long-term effects can include:
  • PTSD-like symptoms, including flashbacks, dissociative states, and violent outbursts against the abuser
  • health issues caused by stress, such as high blood pressure and associated cardiac problems
  • health issues from the physical abuse, such as damaged joints or arthritis
  • chronic back pain or headaches
  • increased risk of developing diabetes, asthma, depression, and immune dysfunction due to long-term stress

Treatment

The first step in treating battered woman syndrome is to get the woman to a safe place away from her abuser. She isn’t safe until she does this. Form a safety plan and a getaway plan without the abuser. It’s also good to have a doctor examine any injuries that may have been sustained in the abuse.

A therapist with experience in PTSD or domestic abuse should be consulted. The therapist needs to validate the victim when the victim is detailing the abuse. The therapist should help her to see that it was not her fault. They should facilitate empowerment.

The therapist should also evaluate for other mental health conditions and factors that may have contributed to the woman not recognizing the abusive relationship in the early stages.

Anxiety and depression can result from battered woman syndrome. The therapist will use a combination of anti-anxiety medications, antidepressant medications, and talk therapy to help the woman regain control of her life.

How to get help

If you think you have battered woman syndrome, it’s important to get help right away. Reach out to your support system as soon as possible if you feel comfortable doing so. You can also go to a therapist or call a domestic abuse hotline, whose numbers you can find on the following pages:
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV)
The National Domestic Violence Hotline

The therapist and hotlines can help provide you with resources and information, such as where to find a shelter. They can also help you develop a safety plan to get away from the abuser.

If you believe that you are in immediate physical danger, call helpline or the police to come immediately. Domestic abuse can be life-threatening, and women are often murdered by abusive husbands. Don’t take the risk.

How to help others

If you suspect that someone is in an abusive relationship or has battered woman syndrome, it’s important for you to withhold judgement. Even though the abuser is in the wrong, many people like to ask, “Why would she stay? Why would she let this happen?” Many women in these circumstances feel shame or are afraid to admit what’s been happening. Make it easier for them to do so, and let them know that you’re always there if they need anything.

If possible, help them gain access to resources they don’t have. Help them develop a safety plan to get away from their abusers. If you can, give them access to transportation and information about shelters.

You should never force someone with battered woman syndrome to do something, however. They’re already being controlled by one person. And if you force them to leave before they’re ready, there’s a good chance they’ll go back to the abuser, putting them in even more danger.

Outlook

Battered woman syndrome is a serious mental health disorder that comes as a result of serious domestic abuse, often at the hands of a romantic partner. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, get help as soon as possible.

In some cases, the therapist may recommend interpersonal therapy, where they help the woman establish stronger relationships with her support system. These supportive relationships may have been damaged due to isolation caused by the abuse.

GET A PET FOR YOUR ELDERLY PARENTS TO KEEP THEM ACTIVE

Getting a pet seems to be a win-win situation for the entire family. While having an animal to look after teaches children empathy and responsibility, it is just as beneficial for grandparents. A new study,  found that owning a dog can help the elderly get more exercise.

The study, looked at the levels of physical activity and sedentary time for 43 dog-owners and a control group of 43 non-dog-owners, all aged 65 or over.

Participants wore an activity monitor continuously for three one-week periods, and researchers monitored the time spent walking moderately, time spent standing, and total time spent sitting, as well as the number of times people sat down and how long they sat down for.

Although the results showed that there was no difference between the two groups in the total time spent sitting down, the team found that dog owners were more active than the control group, and showed fewer continuous periods of sitting down
.
“We found that dog owners aged 65 and over spent on average an additional 22 minutes walking, taking an extra 2,760 steps per day when compared to people who didn’t own a dog. Over the course of a week, this additional time spent walking may in itself be sufficient to meet WHO recommendations of at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity,” explained lead author.

The research did have some limitations, including that as an observational study it cannot determine cause and effect – that is, are more active people more likely to own dogs, or is it owning a dog that makes people more active?

However, the study did uses objective measures of collecting data on physical activity and sedentary behaviour, unlike previous research that has mainly relied on self-reports from participants, which is subject to error.

The team now believes that health professionals could encourage older adults to become dog owners or to share care of a dog to help motivate them to be more physically active.

The findings can be found online published in a  journal.

Brain next frontier to treat obesity

Therapies aimed at areas of the brain responsible for memory and learning could lead to better treatment of obesity and dementia, says a study.

"This is a novel way for health care providers who treat people with weight problems and for researchers who study dementia to think about obesity and cognitive decline," said professor Terry Davidson from the American University in the US.

Researchers reviewed findings linking obesity with cognitive decline, including the "vicious cycle" model, which explains how weight-challenged individuals who suffer from particular kinds of cognitive impairment are more susceptible to overeating.

It is widely accepted that over consumption of dietary fats, sugar and sweeteners can cause obesity. These types of dietary factors are also linked to cognitive dysfunction.

Experiments in rats by the researchers showed that over consumption of foods high in saturated fats and simple carbohydrates can damage or change the blood-brain barrier, the tight network of blood vessels protecting the brain and substrates for cognition.

Certain kinds of dementia are known to arise from the breakdown in these brain substrates.

"Treating obesity successfully may also reduce the incidence of dementia, because the deterioration in the brain is often produced by the same diets that promote obesity," concluded the study that appeared in the journal Physiology & Behavior.
