Success vs. Happiness: Don't Be Fooled Into Thinking They're the Same

Take a minute to think about how "successful" you are.

Now think about what criteria you used to evaluate yourself. Some people might look to their bank account. Others to various degrees they've collected. Many would look to their relationships with a spouse, their children, their friends. Some might even open their closet and look to their collection of designer shoes, bags and watches.

Do I consider myself "successful?" I do. I've created a pretty awesome business; I’m well respected in my field; and I have multiple degrees. I love my home, and my relationships are strong.

But on the other hand, I don’t own my home. I sold my condo when I divorced. I’m also overweight, which doesn’t exactly paint a picture of success -- especially for a woman. Oh, and I quit my PhD 93 pages into my dissertation.

To some people, I might not look like a smashing success.

What do we mean by "success" anyway?

My friend and colleague Ryan Coelho says the word “success” is like the word "God." If you ask 100 people what it means, every one of them will have a different answer. He’s right.

On one level, we understand that real success is about happiness. We know this. We’re not shallow and superficial. And yet…

And yet most of us (ahem, even those of us who help people get happy for a living) easily confuse success for happiness -- at least until we wise up.

Look up the word “success” and you’ll find a definition like, “the attainment of wealth, position, honors or the like,” and synonyms like “accomplishment," “prosperity” and “fame." I have nothing against the word success or even its traditional definition. It’s just a word, after all. But let’s call it what it is. It’s a benchmark for performance and attainment -- a measuring stick.

Tangible metrics are important and have their place, particularly in the business world. But if you’re looking for personal fulfillment, it’s not likely that traditional measures of success are going to get you there.

As a society, we've come to believe that success -- stuff and status -- is the Yellow Brick Road. Follow it, and we'll most certainly arrive at the Emerald City. While there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting stuff, status, wealth or acclaim, it’s a mistake to assume that they pave the way to happiness and fulfillment.

"Success" is thrown around so frequently and in such varied contexts that we've forgotten what it really means. It's vague, all encompassing, a catch-all. Success dangles in front of our eyes the things we think will make us happy -- status and stuff.

But we don’t actually want all that. What we want is the way we think the stuff and status is going to make us feel. Big difference. Success, when you boil it down, seems to be about what we think will make us happy. It’s a lure, shiny and seductive -- but there’s a hook: You can do everything right in the pursuit of attaining traditional success, but happiness and personal fulfillment are not guaranteed.

Personally, at the height of my “success,” I was pretty miserable. I’m not saying there’s an inverse relationship between success and happiness, just that there’s not necessarily a positive one. They're two different things.

A popular formula for success and happiness that's guaranteed to fail is the following: When I have (insert measure of success here) I'll be happy. It will fail because one doesn’t necessarily lead to the other.

How you personally define success and how you personally define happiness is entirely up to you. But recognize the difference.

Wishing you happiness -- and success.

Relieve Your Stress With This Easy 5 Minute Meditation

Meditation is used by people across the world for its wonderful benefits for the mind, body, and soul. However, many of us never give it a go because we think it involves complex learning, special skills and even a level of meaning that we don't really understand. In reality, the only equipment you need in order to meditate is yourself, and you do not need any special training. Here is a five minute, stress-relieving meditation that anybody can perform easily.

How It Works
Meditation comes in many different forms, but this guide covers a practice that is designed to allow you to re-connect with yourself emotionally and mentally. Meditative practices like this are specifically intended to promote relaxation, calm and stress relief, and provide you with peace of mind. You only need five minutes to run through the entire process, so it's possible to perform the routine in the middle of a hectic day when you are feeling worn down, anxious or overworked.

Meditation can help you shake off your woes and continue with your day in a much better frame of mind.
Step 1 - Set a Timer
You will not relax properly if you are constantly thinking about the time that has elapsed since you started the process, so use a timer. You can set the timer on your phone, computer or wristwatch to ensure you can concentrate on the meditation. If you are an iPhone user, you can download the Healing Music app and use that as a timer instead.

Ideally, you will set the timer for five minutes, but if you are pushed for time, you can set it for a shorter period.

Step 2- ideal position/ comfortable position
If you think of meditation, you probably think of people sitting cross-legged on the floor. While that is an effective position in which to meditate, it is not a necessity. When picking a sitting position, it is best to simply ensure that you are comfortable. An awkward position will distract you.

You should sit or lie down, rather than stand to replenish your energy supplies, but you can use a chair if you like. Just try to keep your feet in contact with the ground.

Step 3 - Close Your Eyes and Focus on Breathing
Start your timer, and then close your eyes. Gently focus your attention on your breathing. Don't try to change your breathing pattern or do anything unusual, sustain a normal breathing pattern. Focus on how your breath feels right now, and if you can find a way to breathe naturally but deeply it will help.

Step 4 - Hold Your Attention
Your mind is the biggest barrier to successful meditation, but remember that you are trying to clear it. Thoughts will drift into your head, but as they do so, gently acknowledge them but let them drift away. Continue to focus on your breathing patterns as the thoughts try to dominate your mind.

Focusing your brain on your breath will ensure that your mind stays in the present.

Concentrate on each inhale and exhale until your timer sounds the end of your meditation.

10 tips for preventing back pain

Preventing back pain may be the simplest way to deal with it. you can find tips for helping to prevent back pain.

1. Lift Safely
Safe lifting involves using your legs to spare your back. Bend your knees, tighten your abdominal muscles, and keep the object being lifted close to your body. For more tips, see Safe Lifting Techniques, which provides an illustrated step-by-step guide.
It is also a good idea to be aware of unsafe lifting techniques, so that you can avoid them. Unsafe lifting techniques usually involve positions that will cause you strain when you add a load to them.

2. Minimize and Avoid Twisting Motions
The use of twisting motions should be carefully monitored, and scaled back or eliminated as appropriate. When lifting heavy objects, twisting should be avoided. When doing heavy work, such as housework, try to keep twisting to a minimum. In other activites, pay close attention to how you are moving your spine, as well as any warning signs such as pain or tightness, that may indicate trouble. Scale back on the twisting according to the warning signs your body gives you.

3. Drink Plenty of Water
Our bodies are comprised of approximately 70% water. Enough water keeps us fluid, rather than stiff. Drinking plenty of water enhances the height of intervertebral disks, keeping them the healthy shock absorbers they are. Water is necessary for nearly every bodily process so is good to have in generous supply, at least 6-8 8-ounce glasses per day. It is almost impossible to drink too much water. For the facts on dehydration, read Dehydration: What a Pain!

4. Live an Active Life and Strengthen Your Abs
Exercise and activity keep the muscles of the spine strong. The most important muscles to strengthen to avoid back pain are the abdominals. Include stretching in your fitness program to avoid stiffness, which causes pain. Another reason to stay flexible is that stiff muscles are a precursor to injury.

5. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Maintaining a healthy weight is generally an excellent way to prevent all kinds of diseases and discomforts. For the spine, it avoids compression and loading of the intervertebral disks, prevents postural abnormalities, such as anterior pelvic tilt, and interrupts a sedentary lifestyle, with its accompanying stiff and/or weak muscles.

6. Find the Best Sleeping Positions
Finding a sleeping position that works for you can help you avoid placing unnecessary strains on your back or neck. Doctors tend to vary when recommending ideal sleep positions, so being guided by your comfort levels and using your own judgement are good accompaniment to his or her advice. About's Sleep Disorders editor, Florence Cardinal, has some great tips for sleep positioning.

7. Warm Up
For those who exercise, and that should be everyone, warm ups are a must. Warm up means 5-10 minutes of light aerobic activity just prior to the exercise session. The purpose of a warm up is to acclimate the muscles to a more intense activity level gradually enough to prevent injury, and therefore, pain. Recommendations by experts vary as to whether the warm up period should include stretching.

8. Cool Down
The cool down period after an excercise period must include stretching. During cool down, your muscles are still warm from exercising, and are very receptive to stretching. Stretching will be less painful during cool down, as well. Stretching relieves muscle tightness, which is one cause of back pain. Stretching also helps to balance the action of muscles, enhancing ideal alignment, and relieving joint strain.

9. Purposely Interupt Long Periods of Sitting
If you sit for long periods of time, force yourself to get up from your chair as much as your work environment will permit. Sitting loads the spine and compresses the disks, leading to disk problems. Slaving over a computer for long periods of time can also cause posture problems, such as kyphosis, and neck problems.

10. Try a Holistic Approach
Holistic bodywork techniques and systems such as massage therapy, yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais, Chiropractic, or acupuncture are a great way to keep the structures of your spine tuned up for a lifetime.
