These delicious and healthy foods will help hit your optimal daily fat intake

Granted, fat is always gonna have a bad rep but in order to hit peak health, who knows how many grams of fat per day is optimal? Fatty foods are rightly associated with heart disease and an unhealthy diet can contribute to all manner of early grave scenarios but there is such a thing as good fats. 

“For years, fat was seen as unhealthy so we began a strong focus to remove it from our diets whenever we could,” remembers a nutritional scientist. “But, over the past decade, the perception of dietary fat has changed considerably, emphasising the importance of fat type over total quantity.”

Saturated fats, that’s your fats in deep-fried food, for example are bad. Unsaturated fats, like avocados and fish oils are now considered beneficial. In fact, Shah says good fats may even help lower the risk of heart disease, with intake of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats also helping protect your ticker.

With fat now considered firmly on the menu, here’s everything you need to know.

What does fat do in our bodies?

Fats aren’t just a source of energy, although they do pack around nine kcal per gram, FYI. According to a registered clinical nutritionist and sports dietitian, fats serve a number of critical roles including helping with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are vital for various bodily functions.

“Fats are also integral components of cell membranes and are involved in the production of hormones that regulate metabolism and other bodily processes,” the nutritionist adds. “Fats also act as a cushion for vital organs and provide insulation to maintain body temperature.”

Shah adds that good fats also help signal activity between cells, facilitating protein and biochemical cascades that help regulate growth, immunological responses, and reproductive processes.

How else does fat protect us?

According to Shah, upping your healthy fat levels can also protect your:

Heart Health
Omega-3s reduce blood pressure and may increase HDL cholesterol, protecting your heart and reducing the risk of sudden, fatal heart attacks by up to 45 %.”

Brain and Mental Health
Regular omega-3 intake reduces the risk of depression and anxiety, and may protect against cognitive decline.”

Cancer risk
“Omega-3s decrease inflammatory molecules, reducing chronic inflammation linked to heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses.”

When can fat give us an edge?

The ketogenic diet, in which athletes ditch carbs to encourage the body to rely on fat stores is an obvious example of when focusing on fat may give us an athletic edge.

“Some athletes and bodybuilders use ketogenic or higher-fat diets to manipulate energy metabolism, but long-term benefits for performance are still debated,” warns Shah.

Although Shah does allow that athletes with high fat oxidation capacity can benefit from slightly higher fat intakes (up to 35% of calories), which may help spare muscle glycogen and enhance endurance.

Is too much fat dangerous?

The early warnings about fat weren’t entirely without merit. As mentioned above, certain types of fat will definitely do you harm, as will too much of the good stuff. As always, it’s about balance.

Current UK gov guidelines recommend men limit their fat intake to 95 grams per day, with a maximum of 30 grams being saturated fat.

Exceed this and you’re looking at weight gain, heart disease, and even cancer. “Foods you should avoid include: fried items like chicken and chips, along with fast food choices such as burgers and pizza,” says Shah. “Processed meats including sausages and bacon, as well as cakes and pies, and prepackaged meals containing ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ are also ones to watch out for.

To stay on track, Shah recommends getting 20-35% of your total calories from fat, upping this to 35% of your calories if you live an active life in order to support endurance and performance. Keto diets, meanwhile, might reach 60–80% fat, but Shah warns that this should be medically supervised.

What are the best sources of healthy fats?

When it comes to how many grams of fat per day you should be consuming, here's the good news: the thing about healthy fats is that they’re mostly delicious and will likely add all manner of extra benefits to your diet, from a wider nutrient profile to more lean fish, and better fibre. Shah says that the British Diabetic Association advises consuming two servings of fish weekly. Other good sources include:

Cacao nibs
“The unrefined, less processed variant of chocolate is rich in beneficial lipids and antioxidants,” says Shah.

Egg yolks
“Frequently neglected because of cholesterol concerns, egg yolks are a source of beneficial lipids, essential vitamins, and choline, an essential nutrient for cellular function,” Shah explains.

Almond Butter
“As an alternative to traditional butter, almond butter provides healthy monounsaturated fats and can be a beneficial addition to a balanced diet,” says Nanavati.

Seaweed
“Certain types, like nori, spirulina, and chlorella, possess small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids,” says Shah.

Dark poultry meat (without skin)
“This contains a higher concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids compared to white meat, and also undergoes less processing than red meat,” advises Shah.

New rapid blood test to detect 18 infectious, inflammatory diseases in kids

An international team, led by British researchers, has developed a simple blood test which may be able to rapidly diagnose, detect and distinguish between 18 infectious or inflammatory diseases -- including group B Streptococcus (GBS), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and tuberculosis.

Using a single sample of blood, the test could enable clinicians to diagnose the cause of fever based on the distinctive pattern of genes being "switched on or off" by the body in response to specific illnesses.

While current tests for some of the conditions can take several hours, days or even weeks, a test-based on this approach would be capable of providing a result in under 60 minutes.

Researchers from Imperial College London explained that a diagnostic test based on patients' gene expression could drastically improve the diagnosis of childhood diseases, reduce delayed and missed diagnoses, and have a significant impact on health care, especially in developing regions.

"Despite huge strides forward in medical technology, when a child is brought into hospital with a fever, our initial approach is to treat based on the doctors' 'impression' of the likely causes of the child's illness," said Professor Michael Levin, from the Imperial’s Department of Infectious Disease.

"As clinicians, we need to make rapid decisions on treatment, often just based on the child's symptoms, information from the parents, and our medical training and experience," he added, "but we may not know whether a fever is bacterial, viral, or something else until hours or days after a child has been admitted, when their test results come back."

"Such delays can stop patients getting the right treatment early on, so there is a clear and urgent need to improve diagnostics. Using this new approach, once it's translated to near point of care devices, could be transformative for health care."

In the study, researchers explored an approach focused on detecting the pattern of a patient's gene expression in blood that occurs in response to specific infections and inflammatory conditions.

Using data from thousands of patients (including more than 1,000 children with 18 infectious or inflammatory diseases) the team was first able to identify which key genes were switched "on" or "off" in response to a range of illnesses -- providing a molecular signature of disease.

Machine learning was then applied to identify which patterns of gene expression corresponded to the specific disease areas and pathogens -- focusing in on a panel of 161 genes for 18 conditions.

This panel was further validated in a cohort of 411 paediatric patients admitted to hospital with sepsis or severe infections (representing 13 of the 18 diseases), where gene expression was captured from blood analysis, and where diagnoses were made using current gold standard clinical methods.

Are You at Risk of a Blood Clot?

Blood clots do have a purpose. When you cut yourself, your blood cells are supposed to clump together, stopping your blood from gushing out. But sometimes, clots form in places they shouldn't and if they occur where blood needs to keep flowing, it can cause problems. Clots that block blood to your brain cause strokes, and ones that stop your heart's blood flow cause heart attacks. A clot that forms in your leg causes deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can travel to your lungs. Known as a pulmonary embolism (PE), it can be very serious, even fatal.

Dangerous blood clots are common. Statistics show that 100,000 people die from DVT and PE every year in the U.S. That's more than breast cancer and motor vehicle collisions combined. Although anyone can get a blood clot in the wrong place, there are some people who are especially vulnerable - particularly those who fall into one or more of the categories below:

1. People who are overweight 
People who are obese are at a higher risk of blood clots that form in a vein and travel through your blood (VTE). How far off you are from a healthy weight can make a difference in your chances of developing a clot too. For instance, someone who is a little overweight has a little bit of an added risk, but the risk becomes higher as you become severely obese. In addition, the more weight you carry on your frame, the harder it is to get around and sitting still for long periods of time puts you in the blood clot danger zone.  
 
2. Smokers
Smoking harms your health for a host of reasons and one of those is a raised risk of blood clots. Most people think that smoking just affects the lungs, but it actually affects your blood vessels too. Smoking damages the lining of your blood vessels, making blood more likely to stick together. Smoking is also a cause of heart disease and peripheral artery disease and is one of the biggest drivers behind heart attack and stroke as well as an increased risk of VTEs. 
 
3. Pregnant women 
Having a baby can complicate your clotting process. One reason for this is the added hormones - particularly estrogen - that float around in your bloodstream. In addition, as the baby gets larger and larger it can actually push on the blood vessels in the abdomen and the pelvis and block the flow directly causing clots. 
 
4. Estrogen takers
Being on a birth control pill can increase your chances of developing a blood clot. Symptoms include a swollen leg, shortness of breath or chest pain, and most tend to ignore the signs. But women who are taking oral contraceptives, or are on hormone replacement therapy should check for clots. 
 
5. People with infections or inflammatory diseases  
Are you dealing with a serious illness or infection? If yes you should be alert to the symptoms of abnormal clots. Some types of cancer, such as brain, ovary, pancreas, colon, stomach, lung and kidney can put people at risk of DVT or PET. The clots may show up before cancer, and this means they might turn out to be a warning sign. Other conditions make you more likely to get clots, such as diabetes, HIV, or inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's or colitis. If you get injured, your body may clot in internal spots where it shouldn't.

6. People who are still for long periods
There are all sorts of reasons you might not move for multiple hours. Hospital stays are a common reason. In fact, about half of DVTs and PEs occur in patients who are currently in the hospital or who have recently been in the hospital. Most of these patients have been lying in a hospital bed for days or even weeks after their bodies have gone through some sort of trauma like surgery or sickness. At this time in your life, your risk goes up dramatically. Sitting in a car, bus or on a plane for four hours or more is another situation that can increase your risk of a clot, especially if you're not drinking enough water. 
 
7. Descendants of people with blood clotting problems 
Know anyone in your family who has dealt with abnormal blood clots? The first step is to learn more about these experiences. If an injury or illness is to blame, the cause could be genetic. Certain inherited disorders can make your blood thicker, causing it to clot. Take a few tests and find out if you've inherited one of them. 
 
8. People who’ve had blood clots before
Do you have a history of clots? It's likely that you'll get them again. One-third of people who get a DVT/PE will have another in around 10 years. This is because the blood clots form around the valves of a vein, which can damage them. In some situations, this can also lead to multiple clots over time. More often than not, this can be more of a chronic disease, rather than an acute episode.
