Keep Calm and Stay at Home – How to Sail Through the COVID-19 Crisis

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to claim precious lives, Sadhguru answers a pertinent question about how to stay calm when our loved ones are in mortal peril.

Questioner: All my family is in Italy. How can we not panic and be calm in this situation? It is very difficult for me to stay quiet.

Sadhguru: I was talking to someone in India that I know very well. Her son is in New York City, alone in his apartment, infected with coronavirus. So she is terrified and was telling me, "Why do we send our children so far away? Can they not be happy and well here, where we are? Now he is infected with coronavirus, and I do not know what to do." I reminded her that ten years ago she was also very far away from her parents. Now she has come back. Maybe he will also come back.

I understand the struggle, that people who are dear to you are elsewhere, particularly in a place which is going through the throes of infection and there are hundreds of deaths per day. Definitely, you will be concerned, but you are not going to solve any problem by worrying yourself to sickness and panicking. That will only double your trouble. Nobody can deny that there is genuine trouble right now for all of us. Shall we deal with the trouble to the best of our capabilities or shall we multiply it in our mind? This is the choice we have. I would advise you, please do not multiply this in your mind. There is enough of a problem in the world already. Let us see how to minimize this problem for ourselves and everyone else around us.

Keep Calm and Stay Healthy

There is substantial data to show that if a person is exuberant, joyful and wonderful, their immune system is always functioning at a better level of protection than those who are depressed and worried about something.

When a situation is serious, you do not have to become serious. “If I am not serious, does it mean to say I am going to be frivolous?” No, you are just going to be joyful, responsible and sensible. Such a human being can deal with situations much better than those who are dead serious about everything. And especially if you are in panic, you are paralyzed. Right now, it is very important that all your faculties are in place and your body and brain function and respond the way they need to.

Do Not Fight the Virus

In India, just a few people are infected. It may be a few thousand, but still it is few for 1.4 billion people. This is not the time to fight the virus – we must just dodge it. This virus uses us as transportation; we are the carriers, so the only thing you have to ensure is that you do not get infected and you do not give it to anyone else.

When someone is infected, there are medical professionals who will do what they have to do to fight the virus in their bodies. But the most important thing right now is to make sure that there is no seat for the virus to travel in your body, ensuring the distance, separation from people. Panic is not going to help, nor is the callousness of “nothing will happen to me” – with this attitude you could endanger everyone's life. If we do not provide this facility for the viruses to travel from us to someone else, then we can limit the fatalities. Keeping yourself uninfected is the greatest thing that you can do right now.

Did you know the fetus too has gut bacteria ?

The human microbiome is estimated to consist of over a trillion bacteria in a single person, with 10 times the number of microbial cells to every human cell.

Fetus has its own microbiome or communities of bacteria living in the gut which helps them to develop their immune system and metabolism.

Researchers also confirmed that fetal microbiome is transmitted from the mother.

These findings open the door to potential interventions during pregnancy to stimulate the fetal microbiome when a premature birth is expected, to help the baby grow faster and be better equipped to tolerate early life infection risk.

"Our study provides strong proof that a complex microbiome is transmitted from the mother to the fetus," said senior author.

"Unlike other studies relying only on next-generation DNA sequencing, we validated our sequencing results with microscopy and culture techniques, to resolve a decades-long controversy about the existence of a fetal microbiome," continued the Dr.

Now we can pursue ways to boost the development of the fetal immune system and metabolism by stimulating mom's microbiome. Our findings point to many promising opportunities for much earlier intervention to prevent future disease," added the Dr.

The human microbiome is estimated to consist of over a trillion bacteria in a single person, with 10 times the number of microbial cells to every human cell.

Research has established that specific microbiome characteristics play causal roles in obesity, allergy, asthma, diabetes, autoimmune disease, depression and a variety of cancers.

"Establishing a dynamic microbiome in the fetus leads us to suspect that controlled exposure to microbes trains the developing immune system and metabolism," said the Dr.

"We need more research to better understand the mechanisms involved and how we can intervene to improve children's health at the start of life and beyond," concluded the Dr.

Inflammatory bowel disease may raise heart attack risk

Inflammatory bowel disease raises the risk of heart attack. Also, the risk is independent of traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

This was the conclusion of a study that explored the possible link between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and heart disease by analyzing the medical records of more than 17.5 million people.
"Our findings," lead study author says, "suggest that IBD should be considered an independent risk factor for heart disease."

IBD is a long-term disease that inflames the gut, or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The gut becomes inflamed because the immune system attacks healthy and beneficial cells — such as of the gut tissue and friendly bacteria — as if they presented a threat.

Two types of IBD

There are 2 main types of IBD: ulcerative colitis, which mainly affects the colon or large intestine; and  Crohn's disease, which affects any part of the GI between the mouth and the anus.

Some of the common symptoms of IBD include abdominal pain, diarrhea, passing blood, fatigue, and weight loss. Most people are diagnosed with IBD before they reach their 30s.

Because the symptoms of IBD are usually more aggressive — with more frequent flare-ups — in women and younger people, these groups are thought to have higher levels of inflammation.

Estimates based on survey data collected in 2015 suggest that around 3 million adults in the United States "have ever received a diagnosis of IBD." This figure is one third higher than the 2 million estimated in 1999.

Though the two illnesses share some symptoms, IBD is quite different to irritable bowel syndrome, which is not caused by inflammation and damages the GI tract in a different way.

Celiac disease should also not be confused with IBD, although it has some of the same symptoms and also inflames the gut. Celiac disease is caused by a specific immune response to gluten, a group of proteins that are present in some grains such as wheat.

IBD patients have independent heart risk

For their analysis, the team used anonymized data from the electronically stored medical records of more than 17.5 million people, aged 18–65, who belonged to 26 healthcare systems across the U.S.

From the data, they were able to identify which people had been diagnosed with IBD in 2014–2017, and which people — with and without IBD — had experienced heart attacks.

The results showed that 211,870 of the people had been diagnosed with IBD, which is 1.2 percent of the total and in keeping with official U.S. population estimates.

The team found that traditional risk factors for heart disease — such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol — were more common in people with IBD.

They also found that people with IBD were twice as likely to have experienced a heart attack as people without IBD.

However, even after the results were adjusted to remove the influence of the traditional risk factors and demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and race, they showed that people with IBD still had a higher risk for heart attack.

This independent risk was 23 percent higher than the risk of heart attack in people without IBD.

IBD patients must be 'aggressively screened'

A comparison of subgroups also revealed that women with IBD under 40 years of age were at higher risk for heart attack than men with IBD of the same age.

Above the age of 40, the risk of heart attack was similar in both males and females with IBD.

The Dr. suggests that physicians should be aggressive in screening IBD patients for heart disease and adopting strategies to reduce the risk.

"Our study adds considerably to a growing set of literature highlighting the importance of chronic inflammation in IBD as having a role in the development of heart disease."

8 Exotic Superfoods to Boost Your Immune System

acai berries

Extracts from acai berries may destroy cancer cells, particularly those associated with leukemia.

Acai berries (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) are grown on the palm trees in the Amazon rainforest of northern Brazil. The name of the game with acai berries is pure antioxidant and nutrient power.
They fight leukemia. A well-known study, done by the University of Florida, found that extracts of the acai berry destroyed human cancer cells grown in a lab. More studies are needed to confirm its effects, but this step is definitely in the right direction.
They reduce inflammation. One of the best things that acai berries can do for you, due to the large amounts of anthocyanins they contain, is reduce inflammation associated with chronic diseases. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, fatigue syndromes, digestive discomforts, aches, and pains are all helped by reducing inflammation.
They shield your heart against disease. The pulp of acai berries has deep healing agents that contain antioxidants and fiber that reduces cholesterol — and keeps your digestive system healthy to boot!

Goji berries are richly immersed in antioxidant power.

Goji berries (pronounced go-gee), which are the commercial name for wolfberries, have been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine.
Battle cancer: The phytochemicals in goji berries may have powerful anticancer effects. A 1994 study published in the Chinese Journal of Oncology stated that goji berries have a positive effect on treatments when used in conjunction with other cancer therapies.
Support weight loss: Goji berries contain natural compounds that are lipotropic, meaning they help carry fat away from the liver and burn those extra calories.
Protect your heart: Goji berries have compounds to lower cholesterol, are natural defenders against free radical damage, and release levels of homocysteine, a protein associated with heart disease and inflammation.
Prevent age-related eye problems: Goji berries have a high level of antioxidants, like beta carotene and zeaxanthin, which are important for vision. Zeaxanthin protects the eyes, specifically the retina, and may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
Boost your libido: This amazing superfood not only raises your spirits, but it also raises your libido! Goji berries raise testosterone levels, and, therefore, your sex drive goes up.

Dulse is a sea vegetable with many vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and other natural food chemicals with antioxidant properties.

Dulse is reddish brown and comes in whole leaves, powdered, or as a condiment. This sea vegetable is chewy with a salty finish. Dulse flakes give a great flavor to salads. You can also eat it right out of the package!

Hijiki is a sea vegetable that looks like black angel hair pasta.

Called the “beauty vegetable” in Japan for the shiny hair and beautiful skin it gives to those who indulge, this sea vegetable helps nourish the thyroid, promotes healthy skin and hair, and promotes a healthy immune system.

You can find virtually every nutrient in sea kelp.

Kelp is a great source of iodine, which is a vital nutrient that many are deficient in and that your throid needs. Kelp noodles are delicious and a wonderful way to add sea vegetables to your diet.

Kombu, another sea vegetable, provides minerals that are particularly important in your diet.

Kombu is a type of brown algae that has a beautiful dark purple hue. You can find kombu fresh, frozen, or dried. It comes in thick strips or sheets. It has a savory taste and can be used as a food flavoring, food topping, or a nice salty addition to soups.

Nori is the most popular sea vegetable because it’s used to make sushi.

You can find nori in colors from dark purple to marine green. You can use it as a condiment for soups, salads, and casseroles or cut into strips.

Another great sea vegetable, wakame, provides a salty taste that comes from a balance of sodium and other minerals from the sea.

Wakame (pronounced wah-ka-may) is a tender grayish green sea vegetable, and when you soak wakame, it expands many times its original size. Eat it raw as a snack, add it to soups and stir-fries, or roast it and sprinkle on salads and stews. Wakame becomes soft and melts in your mouth when cooked. What a great way to add minerals to your foods!
Sea vegetables also give you a good dose of fiber to promote digestive health.
