Whooping cough needs urgent attention

Turns out, whooping cough more widespread than previously known.

According to a study , whooping cough cases in Ontario are happening much more frequently than previously known, reinforcing the importance of up-to-date vaccinations to protect against illness and the spread of disease.

Whooping cough (formally known as pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it's characterised by a severe hacking cough followed by a sharp intake of breath that sounds like "whoop."

Many people, though, don't develop the whoop; sometimes, a persistent hacking cough is the only sign that someone has the illness In the case of infants, they may not cough at all; instead, they may struggle to breathe, or they may even temporarily stop

breathing. Infants are most at risk for serious complications from a whooping cough.

Deaths associated with a whooping cough are rare. When deaths do occur, however, they are most commonly seen among infants, especially those who are too young to be immunised against the disease.

While whooping cough is required to be reported to public health in Ontario, the new study suggested that the incidence of illness is significantly under-reported.

The researchers compared and cross-referenced three different datasets and found that the estimated total number of cases among infants was almost double, from 545 recorded cases to an estimated 924 cases. The data sets include the period from 2009 to 2015.

For those aged one year and older, an estimated total of whooping cough cases was nearly eight times the number actually reported (12,883 estimated cases vs. 1,665 cases reported to public health).
One of the main drivers of the under-reporting is the variability of physicians recognising and reporting the illness to public health, noted the researchers.

"These numbers clearly show that whooping cough is much more prevalent in the community than we realized, making the risks of people catching and spreading the disease higher," noted the lead author.

"Whooping cough is a vaccine-preventable disease, and these research findings reinforce the need for people to make sure their immunizations are up-to-date to limit potential infection and spread. This is particularly important for people who care for or are in contact with young infants", continued the author.

Ensuring that immunizations are up-to-date are one way to control future outbreaks, said the author. In addition, better surveillance data to capture the true incidence of the whooping cough in the province can help enable evidence-based decisions when it comes to timing and frequency of immunisations.

Prolapsed rectum !

A man has suffered rectal prolapses from when he was a boy," wrote the hospital. "But he did not take note of it over a long period of time, and did not want to cultivate good toilet habits. He also had the modern-day habit of sitting on the toilet for a long time while playing with his phone.

The hospital's doctor pointed out: "It's because of the long-term habit of sitting on the toilet for long periods of time that created great pressure on the abdomen, eventually resulting in rectal prolapses that progressively got worse (over the years)."

According to the article, the hospital received the emergency case at 1am in recent weeks. The patient had a pained look on his face and was leaning on his friends as he was unable to walk by himself.

Doctors performed inspections and found that he had a "tail" measuring about 20cm long emerging from his buttocks, that turned out to be his prolapsed rectum.

The doctors assessed the situation and found that it was not a critical situation, but warded the man as the organ could be subject to necrosis or perforation if exposed for too long.

Doctor  who specialises in surgery for rectal prolapses, ran a CT scan on the man's abdominal area to eliminate the possibility of him dying from loss of blood or necrosis before a team of doctors performed an operation on the man.

"Although it looked very serious, the entire surgery process was very smooth, and the man no longer had a 'tail' after the surgery," said the hospital.

The man's relatives arrived at the hospital after the surgery, and the man could walk slowly just two days after the operation.

He went home with his family ahead of reunion dinner for Chinese New Year.

The Dr. said people of all ages may suffer rectal prolapse, but children and the elderly are more susceptible to it.

According to a website, rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum - the lower end of the colon, located just above the anus - drops downwards and turns inside out.

In the early stage, the rectum stays inside the body, but as the condition worsens, it may protrude out through the anus.

There is often weakness of the anal muscles, and this may result in leakage of stool or mucus. Rectal prolapse is more common in women than men.

Several factors contribute to the development of rectal prolapse. Repeated straining at stools or stresses during childbirth plays a role. With ageing, there is weakening of the tissues that support the rectum and weakening of the muscles of the anus. In some cases, neurological problems, such as spinal cord injury or spinal cord disease, can lead to prolapse. In most cases, however, no single cause can be identified.

The Professor gave the following recommendations to prevent rectal prolapses:
1. Those who suffer from constipation should eat more fruit and vegetables and avoid straining too hard while passing motion. They should also avoid reading books or using their phones while on the toilet.
2. Those who suffer from diarrhoea or enteritis (inflammation of the intestine) should seek treatment promptly, especially for young children.
3. Elderly people who may have weak sphincter muscles should perform Kegel exercises twice a day.
4. Seek treatment early for illnesses that exert pressure on the abdomen, such as whooping cough or emphysema, a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Watch out while coughing it might actually break your RIB!

Laughing so hard your sides split is one thing, but one woman actually coughed so hard she broke a rib. When the 66 year old woman, who has not been named in a case study published, first went to see her doctor, it was thought she had flu did nothing to ease her symptoms.

When she went back to the doctor five days later, she had a large dark mark on the right side of her torso. The woman underwent a CT SCAN  that revealed she had a displaced fracture of her ninth rib the rib had broken and the two ends had separated.

The tests confirmed she had an infection with Bordetella pertussis, which causes whooping cough. Whooping cough is rarely serious in adults, but can lead to rib fractures in serious manifestations.

Even without whooping cough, when one has severe bouts of cough, one can fracture their rib, as a person close to me had this problem. So, kindly take precautions when your cough gets bad.

WHAT DO DIFFERENT TYPES OF COUGH INDICATE !

A cough is often indicative of an underlying problem. For example, a cough can be due to allergies, a common cold, lung disease, or even gastrointestinal issues. The causes may vary, the reason you cough is to help your body eliminate foreign materials or mucus from your lungs and upper respiratory passages. It’s one of your body’s protective mechanisms to keep you breathing easily. A doctor, by listening to a patient's cough, can identify the underlying health problem.
1.Asthma
A dry cough along with a rattling or wheezing sound is often indicative of asthma. With this condition, your airways become inflamed, leading to coughing, wheezing, and difficulty in breathing. Coughs caused by asthma are usually worse at night or while exercising. It can also be accompanied by chest tightness, fatigue and shortness of breath.
If you have asthma, it might be a good idea to look into the correct way of breathing, which shows you how to bring your breathing back to normal. When you’re breathing normally, you get much better oxygenation of tissues and organs.
2. Postnasal Drip
Having a cold or allergies can cause mucus to drip down your throat. This postnasal drip can touch nerve endings, leading to either a dry or wet cough. A cough that is being caused by a postnasal drip will usually be worse at night, and might be accompanied by a scratchy feeling in the back of your throat. If it’s allergies that’s causing this postnasal drip, you may also have itchy eyes and sneezing.
If you have postnasal drip accompanied by congestion, cold symptoms, pressure in your face, and thick green or yellow mucus, you might have a sinus infection. If this is the case, irrigating your sinuses might help.
Back in 2007, a study found that saline irrigation was more effective at decreasing nasal congestion than saline sprays. This appears to work by thinning mucus, decreasing the swelling in your nasal passages, and removing any debris, allergens, and bacteria from your nose.
To make your own saline solution, add one teaspoon of sea salt to one pint of distilled water.
3.Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
If you’re chronically coughing up lots of mucus, this might be due to COPD. Typically, the cough will be worst in the morning and ease throughout the day. You may also experience shortness of breath, fatigue, wheeziness, and chest tightness.
Smoking is a major contributor to COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. With emphysema, the air sacs in your lungs lose their elasticity. Chronic bronchitis occurs when there is swelling in the linings of your lungs and it constrains your breathing.
4.GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
When food passes into your stomach from the esophagus, a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closes, preventing food or acid from moving back up. GERD, also commonly known as acid reflux, occurs when the LES relaxes inappropriately, allowing acid from your stomach to flow into your esophagus.
GERD may cause a dry, spasmodic cough, that is likely to worsen when you’re lying down or eating. You may get heartburn as well, but in 75% of cases, a chronic cough is the only symptom.
GERD is thought to be caused by having too much acid in your stomach, which is why acid-blocking drugs are often prescribed or recommended. However, the problem can also be caused by having too little acid in your stomach, which is why drugs such as proton pump inhibitors typically just make the issue worse. Ultimately, the answer to heartburn and acid indigestion is to restore your natural gastric balance and function.
Eating processed and sugary foods worsens GERD, as this will upset the bacterial balance in your stomach and intestines. Instead, you should eat a lot of vegetables and other high-quality unprocessed foods. You should also consider eliminating triggers from your life such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine products.
5.Pneumonia
This starts out as a dry cough and progresses into a wet cough with green, yellow, or red mucus. The cough might be accompanied by chills, fever, trouble breathing, or pain when coughing or breathing in deeply. Anytime you cough up excess mucus, spit it into the toilet rather than swallowing it as this can cause stomach irritation.
Most people who have pneumonia can recover at home by drinking lots of fluids and getting adequate rest. However, in severe cases in the elderly or young, pneumonia may require hospitalization to receive breathing treatments, fluids, and oxygen therapy.
6.Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
Whooping cough causes a severe cough that ends with a whooping sound as you breath in. The best way to prevent whooping cough is to get vaccinated, but this deserves a closer look. A data shows that 84% of children under the age of 3 have received at least four shots for whooping cough, and yet, despite this high vaccination rate, whooping cough is still prevalent among both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Therefore, this would suggest that the vaccine is ineffective.
If you think you might have whooping cough, you should seek medical attention right away. However, there are some things you can do that may keep it away:
• Avoid mucus-forming foods such as milk, flour, eggs, and sugar.
• Keep your home well-ventilated and free of smoke.
• Keep well hydrated.
• Rest and avoid exertion.
• Massage essential oils with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) into your chest.
• Heat a pan of water to just boiling point, then add a couple of drops of thyme. Breathe in the steam from the pan.

7. Medication-Related Cough
ACE inhibitors, which are used to treat high blood pressure, can cause dry coughs in about 20% of patients. If you notice you have a dry cough a few weeks after starting this type of medication, it could be to blame.
While you shouldn’t stop taking blood pressure medication without consulting your doctor, it’s important to be aware that high blood pressure can often be remedied with lifestyle changes. Therefore, if you’re diagnosed with high blood pressure, dietary strategies can help control it.
One of the common underlying causes of high blood pressure is related to your body producing too much insulin and leptin in response to a high carbohydrate and processed food diet.
Therefore, if you suffer from high blood pressure, you should do your best to avoid processed foods.

On account of constipation and hemorrhoids, bubble water with a decent measure of garlic and put the infusion in a container that will allow you to breath in its vapors, up until the water gets cold.

Garlic is additionally useful in cases of respiratory infections. In particular, it is really astounding for averting and curing tuberculosis, pneumonia, catarrhs, bronchitis, chronic bronchial catarrhs, lung clog, asthma, and whooping cough.

For chronic bronchitis you can prepare a garlic extract: put 40 grams of well washed garlic cut into little pieces and 100 grams of 90 proof alcohol into a bottle, let it soak for five or six days and after that strain. Drink a cup of this every day.

In case of tuberculosis, eat a whole bulb of garlic a day. Separate it in different parts that can be devoured in any way. It is better for garlic to be crude or lightly browned in the oven. Once the milk has reduced almost half and the garlic is well cooked, take off, add little sugar, mix well, drink it as hot as possible, eat the garlic too. This should be had last at night.
