Here is how you can train your brain to tackle stress

Opined by neuroscientist Dr Selena Bartlett, inculcating several healthy habits in life can train your brain to tackle stress. Bartlett, who has been mapping the way our brains react to stress for the last 25 years as a researcher, our brains often deal with stress and trauma through addictive behaviours such as the consumption of sugar and alcohol, reported the researchers.

The  researcher also said that the first step towards attaining a peaceful mind is to understand that you can 'train your brain' to handle stress efficiently. "People are just using alcohol and sugar as medication and I can't keep designing a medication for a medication. My lab looks at the capacity of using neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain to change itself, to help to reduce the impact of that stress and trauma on the brain and to use the power of the brain to drive in healthy habits," Bartlett, who develops drugs to treat addiction, said.

Adding that creating even the most basic healthy change takes time, she said: "Only when we start to become aware of our automatic, often unhealthy, responses to stress, then we can start to rewire them." "However, you can actually train the brain by doing small things every day, like how you wake up in the morning, what you eat, the exercise that you do, sleep and water," she added.

Bartlett, further said that prolonged over-consumption of sugar acts on the amygdala, emotional part of the brain, in a way that makes the brain more reactive to stress. Emphasising that one should understand that our brains process negative over positive information, the researcher said: "Gratitude works. When you wake up in the morning, set up your brain in a positive direction so it will start to take in more positive information than the negative ones."

"We can train our brains to become more resilient by using the principles of neuroplasticity. We can also teach ourselves to take a healthy path to stress-management rather than relying on substances," she added, according to the researchers.

Asserting that simple changes have transformed her capacity to cope with stress, Bartlett said: "I'm the happiest I've been. I can still get triggered by things because we all do and that's life. However, now I know how to handle stress in a way that I have control over it."

Cleansing your liver with raisins: traditional Russian remedy

Did you know that raisins can help you detoxify your liver from toxins and help it function optimally? Namely, raisins are abundant in antioxidants that prevent the free radicals to cause damage on the liver.

Moreover, as they contain a flavonoid known as quercetin, they can keep the liver safe from alcohol toxicity.

Why do we need to pay more attention on liver health?
The liver is one of the most complex organs and it is known to have several functions, i.e., it participates in digestion and cholesterol regulation, boosts the immunity and balances the blood sugar.
What's more, it plays a major role in the filtering out of toxins from the blood. Though this may seem as a bit too much, we need to understand that the liver is a resilient and strong organ which has the ability to self regenerate.

However, we need to help it from time to time, knowing how much burden it has. Similarly to cleaning your house when spring comes, it is also good to detoxify your liver from time to time. And, there is no better ally than the all-mighty raisins.

How to cleanse your liver using raisins?
Raisins, that is, dried grapes, are sweet and healthy treat which people who are on a healthy diet regularly consume. Abundant in important nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamins B,C and E, it definitely helps us preserve our optimal health.
What's more, they're great in detoxifying the liver from toxins and protecting it from further damage. Here is how-
1) Averts alcohol damage
The quercetin in raisins is known to help fight off free radicals and prevent its damage and this has been shown in an animal study. The treatment with quercetin helped protect the liver from free radical damage. Therefore, if you consume the occasional drink, you should definitely up your raisin consumption to preserve your liver health.

2) Fights off free radical damage
Free radicals are known to damage the cells and DNA and may also lead to liver injury. Present in polluted air, tobacco, and alcohol, free radicals are also produced in our body during the food-to-energy conversion in the body. This is where raisins can help protect your liver with their phenolic antioxidants.

3) Protect you from dangerous food additives
The abundance of vitamin C in raisins contributes to its antioxidant power which is pivotal for a healthy liver. Monosodium glutamate, a frequently used food enhancer, was found to trigger liver injury in rats. However, vitamin C intake before this additive;s consumption was administered , it fought off the toxicity.

How to consume raisins and cleanse the liver
A popular traditional remedy is consuming a handful of raisins per day to fight off problem livers and boost its health.

You can also soak several raisins in water overnight. Then, in the morning, drink the raisin water. This remedy is also great for boosting the digestion and making your bowel movements more regular.

How to prepare the traditional Russian remedy to cleanse your liver
1) First, you should soak half a cup of raisins in hot water for 15 minutes.

2) Wash and place them in a cup with boiled water, cooled to room temperature. Let the raisins soak for 24 hours.

3) The next morning, before having breakfast, drink the beverage and eat the raisins. It is recommended to lie in bed for one and a half or two hours and out a compress ( or even better, a hot-water bottle) on the right side of your stomach.

Study suggests Vitamin D may help control asthma

Besides making bones strong, higher levels of Vitamin D can also help children with asthma to become more resilient to harmful respiratory effects caused by indoor air pollution, say researchers including one of an Indian-origin.

"Asthma is an immune-mediated disease," said lead author of the study. "From previous scientific studies we knew that vitamin D was a molecule that may influence asthma by impacting antioxidant or immune-related pathways," she added.

The researchers observed that having low blood vitamin D levels was related to harmful respiratory effects of indoor air pollution from sources such as cigarette smoke, cooking, burning of candles, and incense, among children with asthma.

Conversely, in homes that had the highest indoor air pollution, higher blood vitamin D levels were associated with fewer asthma symptoms in children. Importantly, the findings showed that the effects were most pronounced among obese children, she said.

"This highlights a third factor at play here - the obesity epidemic - and helps bring that risk to light when considering individual susceptibility to asthma."

In Practice, the researchers tested three factors -- air pollution levels in homes, blood vitamin D levels, and asthma symptoms -- in 120 schoolchildren with pre-existing asthma. One-third of the children were obese.

"One way to increase blood vitamin D levels is to increase sun exposure, but that isn't always possible in urban environments, or in people with darker skin pigmentation," she said.

"Another way is through dietary supplements or eating more foods that are high in vitamin D, such as fatty fish, mushrooms, or foods fortified with vitamin D, such as bread, orange juice, or milk."

Women more resilient to physical activity than thought

Women can be just as resilient as men in undertaking arduous physical activity with appropriate training and preparation, a study has found.

Researchers showed that women who underwent extreme physical training and completed a trans-Antarctic expedition did not show any more negative health effects than would be expected in men.

It has been reported that the female reproductive system and stress responses are more sensitive to the negative effects of extreme physical activity.

There is some evidence that arduous physical activity can suppress normal female reproductive hormone activity, impair bone strength and elevate stress hormone levels to a greater extent than in men.

However, the reasons underlying these reported gender differences in response to extreme endurance exercise remain poorly understood.

Researchers examined the effects of extreme exercise on hormone levels and the health of six women participating in the first all-female trans- Antarctic expedition.

The researchers monitored several markers of their health before and after the successful expedition.
These included indicators of stress, reproductive and metabolic hormone levels, body weight and bone strength.

The findings indicated not only that markers of reproductive function and bone strength were preserved, but that some markers showed evidence of delayed, exercise-related benefit to their physical fitness two weeks after the expedition.

"Our findings contain some potentially myth-busting data on the impact of extreme physical activity on women. We have shown that with appropriate training and preparation, many of the previously reported negative health effects can be avoided," said the researcher.

Although the team consisted of just six women and it was not possible to account for confounding factors such as age or ethnicity, these findings do suggest adherence to a comprehensive training schedule may have mitigated any negative health effects, researchers said.

The team now plan to further investigate how different types of activities can contribute to negative effects on stress and energy balance caused by physical exertion, which may help in the generation of transferable strategies that prevent them in future.

"These findings could have important relevance for men and women in arduous or stressful employment, where there is concern that they are damaging their health. If an appropriate training and nutritional regime is followed, their health may be protected," said the researcher.
