Daily exposure to ozone pollution linked to higher early death risk

Daily exposure to ground level ozone in cities worldwide is associated with an increased risk of premature death, according to a study based on data from over 400 cities in 20 countries across the world.

The study, published in The BMJ journal, show that over 6,000 early deaths each year would have been avoided in the selected cities if countries had implemented stricter air quality standards.

Researchers, including those from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK, noted that ground level ozone is a highly reactive gas commonly found in urban and suburban environments, formed when pollutants react in sunlight.

Ozone is made up of three atoms of oxygen, and is a highly reactive gas.

Recent reviews suggest that 80 per cent of the world's population in urban areas are exposed to air pollution levels above the Word Health Organization (WHO) threshold of 100 microgrammes per cubic metre (g/m3), they said.

Most previous studies have found positive associations between ground level ozone and mortality, but differences in study design and quality make it difficult to draw consistent conclusions across different regions.

The team analysed deaths and environmental measures -- weather and air pollutants -- in 406 cities in 20 countries, with overlapping periods between 1985 and 2015.

The researchers derived daily average ozone levels -- above a maximum background level of 70 g/m3 -- particulate matter, temperature, and relative humidity at each location to estimate the daily number of extra deaths attributable to ozone.

A total of 45,165,171 deaths were analysed in the 406 cities.

On average, a 10 g/m3 increase in ozone during the current and previous day was associated with a 0.18 per cent increased risk of death, suggesting evidence of a potential direct association.

This equates to 6,262 extra deaths each year in the 406 cities that could potentially have been avoided if countries had implemented stricter air quality standards in line with the WHO guideline, the researchers said.

The study found smaller but still substantial mortality impacts even for ozone concentrations below WHO guideline levels.

This supports the WHO initiative of encouraging countries to revisit current air quality guidelines and enforcing stronger emission restrictions to meet these recommendations, the researchers said.

However, they noted this is an observational study and cannot establish cause.

The researchers also point to some study limitations.

For example, areas such as South America, Africa, and the Middle East were unrepresented or not assessed, and differences in monitoring and data collection between countries may have affected the accuracy of their estimates.

The researchers said their results suggest that ozone related mortality "could be potentially reduced under stricter air quality standards."

Antioxidants - How Important Are They For Our Body?

Antioxidants are substances that help the body protect itself from harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are not necessarily formed by medicines. It needs change to free radicals produced by enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions/by inflammation and external factors like smoking, x-rays, chemicals, industrial pollutants, ozone and certain drugs.

Antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta carotene and minerals such as flavonoids and selenium; both of which are found in plants. The best kind of antioxidants the human body receives is from fruits and veggies. While flavonoids are found in red wine, fruits and in different types of tea; pharmaceutical companies also sell dietary supplements rich in antioxidants.

Antioxidants and their role in the human body:
Antioxidants play a great role in management, prevention and in the subsequent elimination of diseases such as various types of Cancers, Alzheimer’s and a few arthritis related conditions.

How safe are antioxidants for your body?
Medical practitioners are of the opinion that the best source of antioxidants is your natural sources rather than dietary supplements. Over abuse of antioxidants can be lethal for your body. It is always advised to have plenty of fruits and vegetables each day.

Not only does diet contribute to antioxidants, the body too employs certain mechanisms to protect itself from damage. Antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase are few such enzymes. Micro-nutrients such as iron, copper, selenium, zinc and manganese are required to help facilitate these mechanisms. Inadequate intake of these minerals in your diet might reduce the activities performed by antioxidants; these claims have been backed by scientific studies.
Nowadays, different types of snacks are in the market enriched with multivitamins. You can try true elements antioxidant mix roasted snacks to meet your evening cravings. It is one of the perfect snacks which contains the goodness of the chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc.

Air pollution as bad as smoking a cigarette pack per day

Researchers have found that ozone air pollution which is increasing with climate change can accelerate lung disease as much as that by smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

“We were surprised to see how strong air pollution’s impact was on the progression of emphysema on lung scans, in the same league as the effects of cigarette smoking, which is by far the best-known cause of emphysema,” said a Prof.

If you live in areas with increased levels of ozone, researchers found an increase in emphysema roughly the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 29 years.

The study,  demonstrates an association between long-term exposure to major air pollutants – especially ozone – with an increase in emphysema seen on lung scans.

Emphysema is a condition in which destruction of lung tissue leads to wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath and increases the risk of death.

The results are based on an extensive, 18-year study involving more than 7,000 people and a detailed examination of the air pollution they encountered between 2000 and 2018 in six metropolitan regions across the US. The participants were drawn from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Air and Lung studies.

“To our knowledge, this is the first longitudinal study to assess the association between long-term exposure to air pollutants and progression of percent emphysema in a large, community-based, multi-ethnic cohort,” said an Assistant Prof.

While most of the airborne pollutants are in decline because of successful efforts to reduce them, ozone has been increasing, researchers said. Ground-level ozone is mostly produced when ultraviolet light reacts with pollutants from fossil fuels.

FIGHT AIR POLLUTION WITH HONEY !

The air we are breathing is getting toxic by the day.
Winter is approaching and with the festive season at hand, experts are also predicting a heavy sheath of smog to take over in the northern part of the country. Previous year, hospitals across capital saw record number of people landing up in hospital emergency rooms due to respiratory hassles.
The government and non-government institutions are doing their bit to spread awareness about preventive measures, and one of the most common advises is to keep your diet fortified with essential minerals and antioxidants.

The polluted air that we inhale includes ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, diesel exhaust particles, etc. into our lungs. Air pollution could lead to dry throat, itchy skin, burning eyes, breathing problem, coughing, wheezing, irritation in nose, and rise in blood pressure.

The protective antioxidants present in the lining of our lungs help counter the effects of these pollutants, but sometimes they are not enough. There are a number of foods, fruits, veggies and spices that are replete with antioxidants and can prevent your lungs against the onslaught. Honey is one of the oldest and most trusted remedies to soothe itchy, scratchy and sore throat.
Air pollution: Air pollution is a major risk factor of asthma

Air Pollution: Why is a teaspoon of honey your best friend this season?

Honey is packed with vitamins C, D, E K and B complex. It has anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial and ant-fungal properties. It is also rich in a bevy of antioxidants that make it ideal to fight respiratory infections.

How to have honey to combat itchy throat due to air pollution

Experts suggest a home-made cough syrup you can make using just a tablespoon of honey.
• Take 1 tbsp of honey or combine with little lemon juice and/or grated fresh ginger for a warming cough syrup that will boost your vitamin C intake, notes the book.
You can also use honey to make this effective  concoction.
Ingredients Required:
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Tulsi- 4-5 leaves
  • Turmeric - a pinch
  • Black Pepper - 5 seeds
  • Honey - 1 teaspoon
  • Rock Salt - a pinch (optional)
1. Take a pan and add water to it. Heat it on high flame and allow it to boil. Once it starts boiling, add in ginger, tulsi leaves, a pinch of turmeric and black pepper seeds.
2. Now, boil the concoction on low flame till the water reduces to half a cup. Once this is done, remove it from the stove and pour it in a cup. Add one teaspoon of honey and your concoction is ready. You can add in rock salt if you have phlegm.

Kindly consult your physician first, in case your condition worsens. Trying home-remedies normally doesn't do any harm. Best wishes to all for good health during the festive season.
