Respiratory diseases during Monsoon

Monsoons are synonymous with many things including viral and bacterial infections as well as respiratory diseases. But fret not! We’ve got a senior pulmonologist to weigh in on the precautions and cures of these illnesses.

The rains during the monsoons surely bring relief from the scorching heat, but it also brings along many illness like cold and cough and severe respiratory infections. Viral and bacterial infections especially of the respiratory tract and ailments because of the sudden drop in temperature could start off as a simple tonsillitis, cold and dry cough but they might even gradually spread to the rest of the body.

Elaborating more on the symptoms, a consultant chest physician and associate professor,  answers our questions regarding these illnesses, and especially cautions patients with pre-existing respiratory disease such as asthma, who are prone to worsening of symptoms during the monsoons.

What are the symptoms of respiratory disorders during monsoon?
Flu or common cold and pneumonia are common in monsoon. Caused by bacteria or viruses, these illnesses may have symptoms either developing gradually over a few days or progressing fast. The main symptom of a respiratory illness is coughing. One will probably have at least one of these symptoms too — coughing up mucus, a high temperature, sweating and shivers, difficulty in breathing or getting out of breath faster than normal, chest pain or discomfort and loss of appetite. The symptoms are often very similar to those of other chest infections, such as bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma flare-ups or bronchiectasis flare-ups. To get a proper diagnosis one should visit a doctor.

What are the treatments?
Pneumonia can be serious, so it’s important to get treatment quickly. The main treatment for pneumonia is antibiotics, along with rest and drinking plenty of water. If you have chest pain, you can take pain killers such as paracetamol.

What are the major causes for the disease?
Getting wet during rain triggers an allergy, which leads to the usual irritation and cold, which if ignored can trickle down to the lungs and cause sputum, leading to cough. Bacteria and viruses thrive in such condition, worsening the situation. Further, chest colds can trigger a wheezing attack in susceptible individuals, which can lead to asthma. Infection is one of the primary causes of asthma, particularly in children. Yellow coloured sputum is suggestive of severe infection and needs immediate attention.

Onion+ water can help you stay protected from cough and cold this monsoon!

As much as we all love the rains, we fear catching a cold, cough or fever which come with the change in the season. With monsoons, viral and bacterial infections also spike up, which make us even more susceptible to illnesses as our immunity levels go down.

So, what is your best bet to stay safe and boost your immunity naturally this season?

It is onion water!
While this may seem a little off, onion has many more uses than simply flavouring up the dishes. A concoction made out of onions pre-soaked in water can act as a wonderful way to recharge your body and keep you safe from viral illnesses this rainy season. It is also an excellent way to weed out any chances of catching a cold, cough or such major infections.

How to make it:
-Take one onion. Chop it nicely into small, fine pieces.
-Fill a small bowl with some water.
-Into this, add the onion pieces and soak it for upto 6-8 hours.

Once ready, you can have 2-3 tablespoons of this concoction twice a day to stay protected. This drink can be given to children as well, however, the dosage should be low.

You can add a little honey to this concoction to add to the taste. Honey, in itself, will not just give a kick to the taste but also supplement extra anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of the drink:
Believe it or not, onions are an extremely nutritious source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory vitamins which are helpful in beating a bad cold. Red, white or pink, onions come loaded with certain medicinal compounds which are powerful in fighting viral strains. Some of the most commonly found chemicals in onions are thiosulphates, sulfides, and sulfoxides, which along with their antiviral properties give the veggie its unique pungent taste. The more flavourful onion you pick out, more are the benefits it has to offer.

Onion juice, in particular, contains antimicrobial agents which help in pushing out the phlegm from the nasal passageway. It also clears out toxins from the lungs. All of this together helps boost immunity. This concoction would also keep your hydration in check, which often gets neglected during sickness.

Protect yourself from common monsoon diseases

The rainy season certainly brings respite from the sweltering heat, but this season is infamous for attacking one's immunity and making one prone to various infections. The season brings a host of infections right from mosquito-borne diseases like chikungunya, typhoid, and dengue to water-borne illnesses liked leptospirosis (a bacterial infection transmitted through urine or excreta of rats and cattle).
In such circumstances, it is important to boost your immune system by making healthier food choices.
Here are some common home remedies that can help you boost your immune system.

1) Turmeric

Antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory in nature, turmeric is an excellent spice to keep different types of infections at bay. This spice commonly found in every Indian household enhances the immune system and flushes out toxins from the body. Add this yellow spice in your food or you can even mix a pinch of turmeric in your milk to stay protected this rainy season.

2) Ginger

Ginger is another important spice that is popular for its diverse health benefits. The root is packed with essential nutrients that promote your immunity, supports digestion, helps with motion sickness and reduces pain.

3) Cinnamon

This aromatic spice has been valued for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. Cinnamon can cure a sore throat and prevent viral infections that are common during the monsoon season. This spice has also been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, which is the most common cause of premature deaths across the globe.

4) Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are packed with antioxidants and other essential nutrients that are good for the immune system. The spice keeps the immune system strong and helps to cut down water retention in the body.

5) Herbal tea or green tea

Having herbal teas or even green tea can help boost our immunity to stay fit in this season. Tea is loaded with antioxidants that help to keep cold, cough and other infections at bay. Sipping a warm cup of tea also helps soothe the throat and keep the tonsils in check.

6) Eat hot foods

Don't eat cold and stale food in this season as they make you prone to bacteria and infections. Having cold food can lead to stomach infections, loose bowels, and food poisoning. Drinking lukewarm water is also a good option for proper digestion of food. It helps to flush out the toxins from the body and cleanse your system.

7) Tips

Keep your surroundings clean
-Maintain good hygiene
-Take bath properly if you get drenched in the rain
-Do not eat street foods

7 most common monsoon diseases: How to prevent them

The rains may have brought respite from humidity and sweltering heat, but at the same time, it unleashed a series of unwanted and harmful viruses and diseases, leaving no stone unturned to reach out to the common man in various forms.
Here are the most common diseases that you need to watch out for:

Dengue

A mosquito-borne viral disease, dengue is one of the most common diseases of monsoon season in India. The common symptoms of dengue are high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain. The national capital, Delhi, has so witnessed one death while as many as 945 cases of dengue have been recorded so far this season.
Use mosquito nets, spray insecticides and insect repellents to prevent diseases caused by mosquitoes, such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, etc.

Chikungunya

Another viral disease characterised by fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash, chikungunya is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes - Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Malaria

A life-threatening mosquito-borne blood disease caused by a Plasmodium parasite, malaria is transmitted to humans through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. Symptoms of malaria include chills, fever and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.

Colds and flu

The sudden change in weather, causing fluctuations in temperature, is a main cause of cold and flu during the rainy season. During monsoons, the immune system weakens and becomes vulnerable to cough, cold and flu. Symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, congestion, high fever, etc.

Viral fever

Viral fever refers to a wide range of infections, lasting from 5 to 7 days. It is one of the most common diseases in monsoon, usually characterised by fever, body aches fatigue, headaches, and sometimes nausea and vomiting.

Washing hands before eating any food, not touching your nose and mouth with your hand without washing them, avoiding crowded places can help reduce your risk or prevent viral infections.

Typhoid

Cases typhoid rise on a large scale during monsoon. It is an infection transmitted by consuming food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, weakness and fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, etc.
Besides vaccination, maintaining a good hygiene such as, frequent hand-washing in hot, soapy water, not drinking untreated water, avoiding raw fruits and vegetables can help control typhoid fever.

Stomach infections

Stomach infections are a common problem during monsoons because your ability to digest food decreases as well as chances of food contamination is high. Drinking lots of water, eating foods that are warm and are easily digestible, avoiding raw or under-cooked foods can be helpful.
