Planning a safe pregnancy: Expert tips to prevent birth defects in India

Preventing birth defects begins even before conception and continues throughout pregnancy. In India, awareness about prenatal care, proper nutrition, timely vaccinations and regular medical check-ups plays a crucial role in ensuring a healthy baby.

Birth defects are seen in many children and impact their quality of life. However, understand that simple care before and during pregnancy can greatly reduce the risk of birth defects and support a healthy baby. Here, the expert gives some vital tips for expectant parents. It is imperative for parents to follow the guidelines given by the doctor to ensure a healthy conception.

According to Dr Ronak Khandelwal, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Motherhood Hospitals, Greater Noida, birth defects are health problems that develop in a baby during pregnancy. Many birth defects develop in the first 4-6 weeks often before a women knows she is pregnant. Preconception health check-ups help identify nutritional deficiencies , chronic illness, infections or genetic risks early reducing the risk of birth defects even before conception. They can affect the baby’s body, brain, or organs and may be present at birth.

In India, lack of awareness, late prenatal care, poor nutrition, and unmanaged medical conditions can raise the chances of birth defects in children. Common birth defects seen in children are heart defects, neural tube defects (such as spina bifida), cleft lip or palate, Down syndrome, and limb abnormalities. These conditions develop during pregnancy and may affect a child’s growth, appearance, or organ function.

Fortunately, many birth defects can be prevented with timely planning, healthy habits, and regular medical care. Couples with a family history of genetic disorders, repeated miscarriages, consanguineous marriage, or advanced maternal age should consider genetic counselling and screening to reduce the risk of inherited birth defects.

Tips to prevent birth defects

  • Take folic acid as early as possible: It is a known fact that folic acid is important for the healthy development of the baby’s brain and spine. Women planning pregnancy should start folic acid supplements at least one month before conception and continue during early pregnancy.
  • Go for regular antenatal check-ups: Early and regular pregnancy check-ups help doctors monitor the baby’s growth and detect problems early. Tests like ultrasound scans and blood tests can help detect any issues so that timely treatment can be initiated.
  • Manage comorbidities: Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and epilepsy should be tackled during pregnancy. Poorly managed health issues can also raise the chances of birth defects.
  •
  • Quit alcohol, tobacco, and drugs: Are you aware? Alcohol, smoking, tobacco chewing, and substance use can negatively impact the baby’s health. It is essential to avoid secondhand smoke as well.
  • Adhere to a nutritious diet: So, opting for a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, iron, calcium, and vitamins supports the baby’s growth. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, too. Take the help of an expert when it comes to the diet and follow the recommendations right away!
  • Get vaccinated: Vaccinations against infections like rubella and hepatitis B help prevent infections that can cause birth defects. It is necessary to consult a doctor about safe vaccines during pregnancy. So, schedule an appointment with the doctor on an immediate basis.
  • Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals: Limit exposure to pesticides, strong cleaning agents, and harmful fumes as they can also put the child at risk of birth defects.

Also, avoid self-medication during pregnancy. Certain painkillers, acne medicines, herbal products, and antibiotics can harm the developing baby. Always consult a doctor before taking any medication.

Prevent infections such as toxoplasmosis, urinary tract infections, and viral fevers by maintaining good hygiene, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and avoiding contact with contaminated food or water.

It’s time for parents to go for timely check-ups with the expert before and during pregnancy and adhere to the vital tips to prevent birth defects in children.

7 most common monsoon diseases: How to prevent them

The rains may have brought respite from humidity and sweltering heat, but at the same time, it unleashed a series of unwanted and harmful viruses and diseases, leaving no stone unturned to reach out to the common man in various forms.
Here are the most common diseases that you need to watch out for:

Dengue

A mosquito-borne viral disease, dengue is one of the most common diseases of monsoon season in India. The common symptoms of dengue are high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain. The national capital, Delhi, has so witnessed one death while as many as 945 cases of dengue have been recorded so far this season.
Use mosquito nets, spray insecticides and insect repellents to prevent diseases caused by mosquitoes, such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, etc.

Chikungunya

Another viral disease characterised by fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash, chikungunya is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes - Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Malaria

A life-threatening mosquito-borne blood disease caused by a Plasmodium parasite, malaria is transmitted to humans through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. Symptoms of malaria include chills, fever and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.

Colds and flu

The sudden change in weather, causing fluctuations in temperature, is a main cause of cold and flu during the rainy season. During monsoons, the immune system weakens and becomes vulnerable to cough, cold and flu. Symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, congestion, high fever, etc.

Viral fever

Viral fever refers to a wide range of infections, lasting from 5 to 7 days. It is one of the most common diseases in monsoon, usually characterised by fever, body aches fatigue, headaches, and sometimes nausea and vomiting.

Washing hands before eating any food, not touching your nose and mouth with your hand without washing them, avoiding crowded places can help reduce your risk or prevent viral infections.

Typhoid

Cases typhoid rise on a large scale during monsoon. It is an infection transmitted by consuming food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, weakness and fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, etc.
Besides vaccination, maintaining a good hygiene such as, frequent hand-washing in hot, soapy water, not drinking untreated water, avoiding raw fruits and vegetables can help control typhoid fever.

Stomach infections

Stomach infections are a common problem during monsoons because your ability to digest food decreases as well as chances of food contamination is high. Drinking lots of water, eating foods that are warm and are easily digestible, avoiding raw or under-cooked foods can be helpful.

Monkey fever

Monkey fever, also known as Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD), is a tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to South Asia.

Causes and transmission of the disease

The disease is caused by a highly pathogenic virus called KFD virus (KFDV), belonging to the family Flaviviridae, which also includes yellow fever and dengue fever.
The disease was first reported from Kyasanur Forest of Karnataka in India in March 1957. The virus has been detected in monkeys in parts of Bandipur National Park (Chamarajnagar) and parts of the Nilgiris.
Human infection of the disease occured in Bandipur through handling of dead monkeys that were infected.

Signs and symptoms of monkey fever

  • Persons affected by the virus may show the following symptoms
  • High fever with frontal headaches
  • Followed by haemorrhagic symptoms, such as bleeding from the nasal cavity, throat, and gums, as well as gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Other symptoms include vomiting, muscle stiffness, tremors, absent reflexes, and mental disturbances
An affected person may recover in two weeks time, but the recuperating period is typically very long, lasting for several months.

Prevention

  • Wearing protective clothing
  • Tick and mosquito control
  • KFD vaccination
It is said that the vaccine has a 62.4% effectiveness rate for individuals who receive two doses. For individuals who receive an additional dose, the effectiveness of the vaccine increases to 82.9% for individuals who get an additional doses.

Eat sweets to cure chikungunya!

Initially, many thought that chikungunya has no cure.

However, now, the city doctors have found a simple and novel way of curing the disease.

A city-based physician, Dr Suresh Shah, who cured 1,300 patients during the major outbreak seven years back, said: ‘The best way to treat chikungunya is to have home-made sweets like sukhdi, kheer, sheero and lots of liquids. Of course, paracetamol should be taken, but the main focus should be on home-made sweets.’

Elaborating on this, Dr Suresh said that the one suffering from chikungunya needs to be given energy as joint pain and viral fever make the patient weak.

Many doctors may suggest glucose drips for instant energy, but to ensure that the situation does not get worse, sweets and liquids should be taken. They help in recovering in just three to five days, added Dr Suresh.

The city doctors believe that chikungunya is back, but this time in a milder form.

Another family physician, Dr Pragnesh Vaccharajani of Navrangpura area, said that for the treatment of chikungunya, steroids are a strict no-no.

But in reality, unnecessary pain killers, steroids should be avoided. The doctors have realised that steroids and pain killers do not help in curing chikungunya.

However, Dr Vaccharajani said that liquids, plain paracetamol and good rest are the three essential things to cure the disease.

Talking further about finding a cure to the disease, a city-based physician in Sabarmati area, said: ‘Earlier, chikungunya was new for the doctors and there was not much awareness about it. Now, over a period of time, people have developed immunity, therefore, chikungunya is not a life-threatening disease’.

As chikungunya results in low blood platelets, it is advisable to have plenty of fruits and liquids for energy, added Dr BS Shah.
