People who should be careful about eating Guava (amrood)

Who should be careful while having guava

Guava is an incredibly delicious and nutritious tropical fruit. Low in calories and loaded with fibre, it is an excellent addition to a healthy diet. The fruit can be taken in several ways- have it raw, turn it into a tangy chutney, make sweet jam or cook it, it will all taste delicious. Not only the fruit, but guava leaves are also extremely beneficial for health. Studies suggest that adding guava leaf extracts to the diet may boost your heart health, digestion, and immune system. But there are some compounds in this fruit, which is not considered good for all, especially those suffering from specific health conditions.

Nutrient content of guava

Guavas are extremely rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium. 1 serving of guava contains just 112 calories and over 23 grams of carbohydrate. The fiber content is almost 9 grams and there is no starch in guava. The fat content in 1 cup of chopped guava is 1.6 grams, but the amount of protein in it is extremely high, about 4 grams.

Studies suggest this fruit is also beneficial for people suffering from diabetes as it has a low glycemic index. Besides, folate and beta carotene are some other nutrients found in this fruit in abundance. Here are some people who should be careful while consuming guava.

Those who suffer from Bloating

Guava is rich in vitamin C and fructose. A high dose of any of the two can make you feel bloated. Being a water-soluble vitamin our body finds it hard to absorb too much vitamin C, so overloading often triggers bloating. The same goes for fructose. About 40 per cent of people suffer from a condition called fructose malabsorption. In this, the natural sugar is not absorbed by the body, rather it sits in our stomach leading to bloating. Even eating guava and falling asleep immediately may cause bloating.

Those who suffer from Irritated Bowel Syndrome

Guava is rich in fiber, which can help to ease constipation and promote digestion. But excess intake of guava can mess up your digestive system, especially if you are suffering from Irritated Bowel Syndrome. This is also caused due to fructose malabsorption. So, it is important to eat in a limited way.

Those suffering from Diabetes

Guava is one of the preferred fruits for people suffering from diabetes due to low glycemic index. However, if you are including this fruit in your diet make sure that you track your blood sugar level regularly. 100 grams of chopped guava contains 9 grams of natural sugar. So, eating too much may spike the blood sugar level. Eating in moderation is the best choice.

The safe limit and the right time

One serving of guava in a day is safe for consumption. Taking more than that might not be a good idea. You can have the fruit between two meals, or before or after a workout to refuel your body. Avoid having fruit at night as it may lead to cold and cough.

What about supplements?

There is limited evidence available on the usage and benefits of guava leaves extracts. More research is needed to come to any conclusion. Talk to your doctor before including it in your diet.

Does your poop float? You need to read this

Believe it or not, your poop can reveal a lot about your health. And floating poop is something very common and usually not a sign of anything wrong. Gas, changes in diet and minor infections may cause your poop to float. Though some underlying health condition can also cause persistent floating stool.

Read on to know the possible reasons behind floating poop and when you need to visit the doctor:

Fibre consumption
Your poop is less likely to float when it is dense. When you consume foods that are rich in fibre, especially insoluble fibre it can make the poop less dense and thus let it float.

Fibre-rich foods including fruits, vegetables and whole grains form an important part of a healthy meal. So, floating poop can be a result of fibre consumption, which is actually a sign of good health.

Women between the age of 19 – 50 years should consume at least 25 grams of fibre per day, while men of the same age group need at least 38 grams of fibre per day.

Gas
Gas lowers the density of your poop, causing it to float. Many high-fibre foods can cause gas. Many people also develop gas when they change their diet. So, if your poop floats after you eat new food, it’s completely fine.

Stomach infection
Infection in the gastrointestinal tract caused by E. coli can also cause the poop to float. The infection can cause gas and thus lower the density of poop.

In some cases, infections can change the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, leading to malabsorption or fatty stool.

Some stomach infections are temporary and go away without any treatment. A person needs to drink plenty of fluids and rest while recovering from a stomach infection. If you do not see any improvements, you should definitely see your doctor.

Gastrointestinal disorders
A 2015 study found that 26 per cent of people with functional bowel disorders – irritating bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia have floating stools.

In some people, floating poop may be the first warning sign of gastrointestinal or bowel problem. When you have a floating stool along with other symptoms such as pain, diarrhoea, bloating or constipation, it can be a sign of an underlying gastrointestinal issue.

Malabsorption
When the stool is fatty, it floats. The medical term for this condition is steatorrhea. It means your body is not adequately absorbing nutrients from foods.

Some common conditions that can cause malabsorption include:
- Lactose intolerance: It is a type of allergy to sugar that is found in milk and other dairy products. People suffering from lactose intolerance can experience diarrhoea and bloating when they consume any dairy product.
- Small intestine disorders: As the name suggest, a disorder that affects the small intestine and can lead to malabsorption is called the small intestine disorder. People who have has a small portion of their small intestine removed surgically to treat Crohn’s disease can also experience malabsorption and thus floating poop.

- Liver and biliary disease: Our liver produces bile that helps the body digest food. When enough bile is not produced or it doesn’t reach the intestines, it may result in fatty stool. Liver disease such as blocked bile ducts and gallstones can also cause fatty and floating stool.
When you should see the doctor
- If floating stool also looks greasy and the symptom persists for more than a few days.

- If you experience chronic constipation or diarrhoea.

- When you start losing weight without trying.

- Along with floating stool, you also have dark urine.

What is fructose malabsorption? It is a condition where your body cannot absorb/metabolise the fructose (fruit sugar). It’s harmful as many people do not know about the condition. The pieces of fruits you eat, do not get digested, emanate fumes and make you acidic. The worst is that people relate the problem with everything they have eaten but not with fruits. 30 per cent of Indians are affected by fructose malabsorption. When to get yourself tested? If you have acidity, feel bloated or your LDL and triglycerides levels are above 250, despite eating healthy and exercising, get yourself tested for fructose malabsorption. A hydrogen breath test can help detect the problem.

We all know fruits are the healthiest of foods. And that is why we think we can have as many as we want. If you also think this is true, you need to reconsider.

A nutritionist reveals that consuming too many fruits can lead to fructose malabsorption.

Weight loss surgery can help obese adults live longer

People who undergo weight loss surgery have half the death rate compared to those who receive traditional medical treatment over a 10-year period, a study has found.

The rate of death in individuals who did not have surgery was 2.3 per cent compared to 1.3 per cent in those who had surgery. The study compared 8,385 people who had the surgery (65 percent women and 35 per cent men) to 25,155 who did not. In the US, the majority of people who have bariatric surgery are women.

"We showed that a long-term effect of bariatric surgery is a longer life for obese patients," said a , professor. "They had half the death rate, which is significant," the Prof. said.

The average age of a person in the study was 46 years old with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40, the equivalent of being five feet seven inches tall and weighing 120 kilogrammes. The study looked at detailed data on 33,540 obese individuals in Israel for up to a decade.

"Bariatric surgery is an increasingly frequent treatment for severe obesity," said an assistant Prof. "It's highly effective in promoting weight loss but also invasive and can lead to short- and long-term complications," said the Prof.. "In order for patients and doctors to make the best- informed decisions about what weight loss strategies to pursue, they need to understand the true costs and benefits of the procedures," she said.

While the short-term benefits of weight loss surgery - such as weight loss and better control of diabetes and blood pressure - are well known, there is concern about complications from the surgery. Among the concerns are malabsorption of nutrients including vitamin deficiency, anaemia and protein deficiency. However, there was not a higher rate of anaemia, vitamin or protein deficiency among those who had surgery in this study.

The study looked at three types of bariatric surgery compared to the usual care by a primary care physician, which may include dietary counseling and behaviour modification. The surgery types included creating a pouch at the top of the stomach that limits the amount a person can comfortably eat, restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold with an adjustable band and reducing the size of the stomach. "Surgery sounds like a radical approach to managing obesity, and a lot of people reject it because it seems like a risky thing to do, but it is actually less risky to have the surgery," the Prof. said.
