Early detection, support making difference in battle with breast cancer

Throughout Preston County, the state and our nation, Breast Cancer Awareness Month spotlights the importance in treating this deadly disease.

There is no question that anytime “that” word is involved — and there are people who dread even uttering the word “cancer” — there is great concern. Cancer is a life-threatening medical situation that requires immediate treatment and support.

But it is important to know that cancer is detectable — and treatable — in many instances. And thanks to the efforts of the American Cancer Society, and dozens of other groups, significant headway has been made in the treatment of breast cancer.

Reports indicate that over the past 25 years, the mortality rate of breast cancer has fallen 40%, which means about 322,000 lives have been saved.

This has happened for several very important reasons, one of which is the effort to raise the awareness of the importance of early detection as well as making the public aware of available treatment options.

Breast cancer, unlike other cancers that are more difficult to detect, can be spotted through self exam, a manual exam by a physician or a mammogram.

According to the American Cancer Society, 40,920 women will die of breast cancer in 2019.
Experts emphasize the need for early detection through mammograms, 3-D mammograms, a breast Magnetic Resonance Image or ultrasound.

A cancer prevention and control director, says annual checks make a major difference in the effort to diagnose and treat breast cancer.

“We see about 5,000 patients per year,” the Dr. said. “In West Virginia every year, we diagnose about 1,450 women with breast cancer (statewide) and 290 of those women die.

“But, over half of those women diagnosed with breast cancer are diagnosed with it localized, which makes it easier to treat. Mammography is key to the prevention of breast cancer.”

And in that one sentence lies the most important advice women today — of any age, but particularly over the age of 40 — need to heed: “Mammography is key to the prevention of breast cancer.”

We understand that the test has been described as at least a little uncomfortable. And we understand that people are busy.

But we also know that early detection saves lives. And that there are means to make the tests available to all.

There are programs that provide assistance to those without insurance while most insurance programs pay for the cost of a yearly mammogram as a preventative step.

Programs like Bonnie’s Bus, which is a mobile mammography unit that travels to reach rurally located patients, help to provide lifesaving testing in a comfortable, convenient setting.

Thanks to funding from foundations and grants, Bonnie’s Bus provides mammograms to those over age 40 with no cost to those without insurance.

The list of such programs that have made a difference is extensive. But the battle against breast cancer is successful because it is targeted by many groups who are then willing to work together.

We are fortunate to have many of those groups lending a hand in delivering that message, in celebrating those survivors among us and in raising funds for those who need help.

We applaud all of these groups and health institutions for their commitment to treat breast cancer and save lives.

Precordial Catch Syndrome: Harmless Chest Pain

Do you ever experience random and alarming sharp pains in your chest? Because of relatively high awareness to heart conditions, such an occurrence might trigger a great deal of anxiety, but not all chest pain- unpleasant though it may be- should be the cause of concern.
Precordial Catch Syndrome (or PCS) is fairly common among children and adolescents, but sometimes persists throughout adulthood, and is characterized by random short-lasting pain attacks in a highly localized area in the chest. Though the pain is often felt on the left side of the chest, it sometimes occurs on the right side as well, definitely ruling out a heart attack.
In fact, PCS has nothing to do with the heart, at all. Though the syndrome is not fully understood, it is believed that PCS is triggered by a pinching or irritation of nerves in the chest cavity in front of the heart.
What are some of its symptoms and how can you tell PCS apart from serious heart conditions?
•    PCS typically lasts a couple of seconds or minutes.
•    The pain does not radiate to any extremity or the neck and remains localized to a relatively small spot in the chest.
•    The pain typically occurs over the heart, but may also target the right side of the chest.
•    The pain is triggered and exacerbated by sharp movement.
•    Deep breaths also make the pain worse.
•    There are no additional symptoms beyond pain and shallow breathing. Sweat, abdominal pain, nausea and other symptoms typical of heart attack do not occur with PCS.
•    Shallow breathing can, however, cause dizziness and blurred vision.
Though uncomfortable to say the least, PCS is ultimately harmless, with attacks lasting mere moments and having no long-term impact on health. There is no known cure for this inconvenient syndrome, but it is very rare for people to suffer from PCS for the entirety of their lives, and in most cases, attacks subside altogether, never to return.

Novel therapy promises prostate cancer treatment

A new gene therapy could have the potential to treat prostate cancer that causes 300,000 deaths worldwide each year, a new study said after it halted the majority of tumours in laboratory models.

The 'seek-and-destroy' gene therapeutic system was used against two types of a prostate tumour and more than half of them vanished over a period of one month.

However, the therapy is currently in limited use due to lack of delivery systems that can selectively deliver the genes to the tumours without adverse side effects to healthy tissues.

The 'seek-and-destroy' nanomedicine linked to an iron-carrying protein called lactoferrin was developed and the study focused on two prostate cancer cell lines -- PC-3 and DU145.

The intravenous administration of the nanomedicine treatment resulted in the complete disappearance of 70 per cent of the PC-3 tumours and half of the DU145 prostate tumours over one month, revealed the findings published in the journal.

"Although some treatments, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, can be effective against localised tumours, there is still no effective treatment for patients whose cancer recurs or spreads.

"This means that new therapeutic approaches are urgently needed for these patients," said a Senior Lecturer and researcher. Prostate cancer is the fourth most widespread cancer in the world.
