Worst Foods to Eat While Battling a Fever

Fever is an illness that is characterized by an increase in body temperature. Sometimes, fever is just an indication of a more serious disease.

One of the hardest things you need to do when you have a fever is to eat. But despite that, you need to eat to stay hydrated and to continue to supply your body with nutrients that you need.

There are good foods when you have a fever, and there are foods bad for the fever. Here are some of the foods to avoid when you have a fever.

#6 – Junk Foods
Even without fever, one must avoid or lessen the consumption of junk food and fast food because it has high-calorie content but contains fewer nutrients. The nutrients you need when you have a fever is lacking in these kinds of food. Junk foods such as chips and crackers have high quantities of monosodium glutamate which is bad for the body when taken in large amounts. Children are more prone to have a fever and unfortunately, they love to eat junk food. It is best to avoid the consumption of these foods to help quicken the pace of recovery.

#5 – Soft Drinks or Carbonated Drinks

Soft drinks are another food that shouldn’t be consumed when you have a fever. When you have a fever, you need to eat healthy foods to gain the proper nutrients you need. Carbonate drinks have no nutritional benefits which make it bad for a sick person. It contains lots of acids which is also bad when you have to drink medicine for a fever. Refrain from carbonated drinks but instead, drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated to avoid more complicated diseases. Fighting a fever is a lot easier if you avoid these foods.

#4 – Spicy Foods

When you have a fever, your body temperature rises. When you eat spicy foods, your body temperature rises even more. That is the reason why you shouldn’t eat spicy foods when you have a fever. Lower down your body temperature so the fever will go away sooner.

#3 – Caffeinated Drinks

You have to keep your body hydrated while fighting a fever. There are drinks that you must avoid such as caffeinated beverages, namely coffee and tea. These drinks will dehydrate you rather than hydrate, and it will rob away the vitamin C from your body which is very important in regaining your health. Fighting a fever is easier without these drinks.

#2 – Oily Foods

As much as possible, never eat oily foods when you have a fever. You can have soup, fruits and vegetables. All these healthy foods will hasten your recovery. Oily foods should be decreased because they have fewer nutrients needed by your body.

#1 – Hard to Digest Foods

When you have a fever, make sure to not eat hard to digest foods because your digestive system is not working well enough when you have a fever. Hard to digest foods include beans, mashed potatoes and fried foods. Stick to soup and oats as they are easy to digest. Hard to digest foods are the worst foods you can consume when you have a fever.

Early detection, support making difference in battle with breast cancer

Throughout Preston County, the state and our nation, Breast Cancer Awareness Month spotlights the importance in treating this deadly disease.

There is no question that anytime “that” word is involved — and there are people who dread even uttering the word “cancer” — there is great concern. Cancer is a life-threatening medical situation that requires immediate treatment and support.

But it is important to know that cancer is detectable — and treatable — in many instances. And thanks to the efforts of the American Cancer Society, and dozens of other groups, significant headway has been made in the treatment of breast cancer.

Reports indicate that over the past 25 years, the mortality rate of breast cancer has fallen 40%, which means about 322,000 lives have been saved.

This has happened for several very important reasons, one of which is the effort to raise the awareness of the importance of early detection as well as making the public aware of available treatment options.

Breast cancer, unlike other cancers that are more difficult to detect, can be spotted through self exam, a manual exam by a physician or a mammogram.

According to the American Cancer Society, 40,920 women will die of breast cancer in 2019.
Experts emphasize the need for early detection through mammograms, 3-D mammograms, a breast Magnetic Resonance Image or ultrasound.

A cancer prevention and control director, says annual checks make a major difference in the effort to diagnose and treat breast cancer.

“We see about 5,000 patients per year,” the Dr. said. “In West Virginia every year, we diagnose about 1,450 women with breast cancer (statewide) and 290 of those women die.

“But, over half of those women diagnosed with breast cancer are diagnosed with it localized, which makes it easier to treat. Mammography is key to the prevention of breast cancer.”

And in that one sentence lies the most important advice women today — of any age, but particularly over the age of 40 — need to heed: “Mammography is key to the prevention of breast cancer.”

We understand that the test has been described as at least a little uncomfortable. And we understand that people are busy.

But we also know that early detection saves lives. And that there are means to make the tests available to all.

There are programs that provide assistance to those without insurance while most insurance programs pay for the cost of a yearly mammogram as a preventative step.

Programs like Bonnie’s Bus, which is a mobile mammography unit that travels to reach rurally located patients, help to provide lifesaving testing in a comfortable, convenient setting.

Thanks to funding from foundations and grants, Bonnie’s Bus provides mammograms to those over age 40 with no cost to those without insurance.

The list of such programs that have made a difference is extensive. But the battle against breast cancer is successful because it is targeted by many groups who are then willing to work together.

We are fortunate to have many of those groups lending a hand in delivering that message, in celebrating those survivors among us and in raising funds for those who need help.

We applaud all of these groups and health institutions for their commitment to treat breast cancer and save lives.
