Why you should avoid visiting a hospital in the afternoon, according to studies

These are some valid reasons!

In general, there is no preferred time to go to the hospital. Whenever you feel something is wrong with your health, you should visit a doctor. But if you can plan your visit, then avoid booking an appointment during peak day hours. There are several studies that suggest that visiting hospital in the middle of the day is not a good option and should be avoided if you can. Here we have listed 4 valid reasons why it is not good for you.

It is against the circadian rhythm

Most people feel sleepy and less productive after lunch. It is an everyday phenomenon and seems to be a natural rhythm or set clock in our bodies. The same is true for our doctors and nurses. If you visit at around 3 p.m, reportedly their concentration levels are low, owing to which they are less likely to pay attention to you. As per a study conducted by the Duke University, anesthesiologists made more mistakes in the afternoon due to lack of concentration.

Shift change may delay the process
Hospital staff works in shifts and in most cases their shift changes in the afternoon. Shift change is a chaotic time. Some people are in a rush to finish their work and leave. There are high chances that they might not pay much attention to you and you will have to wait for a longer time. So if you have less time, do not go to the hospital in the afternoon.

Lack of cleanliness

Hospitals are filled with different kinds of germs and bacteria. So, it is necessary to keep it clean. But studies suggest that hospitals are cleaner in the morning and evening as compared to afternoon. Moreover, a 2015 study carried out on 4,000 caregivers revealed that hospital staff were 38 per cent less likely to wash their hands in the afternoons as compared to the morning.

Life-threatening conditions are less likely to be detected

As per a study of the University of Pennsylvania, doctors are more likely to recommend you to get test screenings during the morning hours. Visting a doctor later in the day decreases the chances of getting screened for life-threatening conditions. As the day progresses, doctors get overwhelmed with more and more work and are less likely to prescribe additional screening.

How A Piece Of Popcorn Led To Deadly Infection, Open Heart Surgery

A British man nearly lost his life after getting a piece of popcorn stuck in his teeth. Adam Martin, 41, developed a life-threatening infection and had to undergo open heart surgery after trying to dislodge the popcorn out of his teeth using a variety of tools. The kernel got stuck in his back tooth in September.

According to the report,  Mr Martin had the piece of popcorn stuck in his teeth for three days. The firefighter from Cornwall used a pen lid, toothpick, piece of wire and even a metal nail to try to get it out.

He damaged his gums while trying to remove the popcorn. The objects that he put into his mouth, meanwhile, led to a gum infection that eventually developed into an infection of the heart called endocarditis, which is caused by bacteria spreading through the bloodstream.

According to report, Mr Martin began to experience night sweats, fatigue and headaches after a week. By October, when his symptoms were still not better, he went to a hospital, where doctors found his heart was damaged due to the infection.

"I had a feeling there was something seriously wrong. I was sleeping an awful lot and I felt terrible," he recalled. "I had aches and pains in my legs and I just did not feel right at all. I was admitted to hospital the same day for tests. By this point, I was very worried."

Fortunately, doctors were able to save Mr Martin. He had to undergo an operation to remove an infected blood clot from his leg and another seven-hour surgery to replace a valve in his heart.

"I wasn't far off death's door and I am extremely lucky,' said Mr Martin, according to the news. "I am never eating popcorn again that's for sure."

Gut microbiota linked to organ damage in patients with sepsis

Gut microbiota linked to organ damage in patients with sepsis finds a new study.

Sepsis is a serious condition that can result in organ failure and even death. A novel human study demonstrates for the 1st time that the gut microbiota of patients with sepsis plays a major role in organ damage.

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection. The body normally releases chemicals into the bloodstream to fight infection. Sepsis occurs when the body's response to these chemicals is out of balance, triggering changes that can damage multiple organ systems.

To conduct the experiment, researchers 1st compared the fecal microbial composition of 2 human groups- people who had sepsis and those who did not. They observed that the gut microbiota was altered at both functional and compositional levels in the 1st group, compared with that of the 2nd group.

The researchers then translated the feces to recipient mice, induced sepsiss in the mice, and checked the mice's organ injuries. The mice transplanted with feces from the 1st group showed more severe liver damage than the mice transplanted with feces from the 2nd group, even though all the mice had been induces with sepsis. These initial findings suggest that targeting intestinal microbiota may help people recover from sepsis.

Keeping healthy microbiota in your gut is important to maintain normal immune status and com batting diseases like sepsis, said a Prof. of pathophysiology. With further study, transplantation of healthy feces may one day serve as a novel approach for treating sepsis in intensive care units.
The microbiome is one of the most penetrating fields in the modern era of human homeostasis and pathology and this study is yet one more exciting dimension, said a researcher.

5 effective ways to prevent sepsis

If you are experiencing higher respiratory rate and change in mental status, you may be suffering from sepsis. It is a life-threatening condition that occurs due to over response of your body’s defense system. In response to any infection, the immune system generally releases chemicals in the bloodstream to kill the pathogens. In case of sepsis, this response goes out of balance and causes changes that can potentially damage multiple organ system. It is characterized by symptoms like high fever, unusual sweating, dizziness, slurred speech, diarrhea, shortness of breath etc. If not treated on time, this may further result to septic shock that is characterized by extreme drop in blood pressure leading to death. Affecting people of any age, sepsis is considered most dangerous in older adults, pregnant women, people with weakened immune system, and children younger than 1 year. Any type of infection viral, bacterial or fungal infection including pneumonia, digestive system infection, kidney infection, or bloodstream infection can cause sepsis. As far as its treatment is concerned, your doctor may prescribe you certain antibiotics or give intravenous fluid, initiate or kidney dialysis.

Keep you hand clean: Though sound too basic, doing this can keep you away from various infection. Proper hand hygiene can prevent the transmission of antibiotic-resistant organisms and infections in general.

Proper wound care: Even a small cut can catch infection and lead to sepsis.

Have probiotic-rich foods: Foods like yogurt, kefir, pickles etc. contain probiotics that can help good bacteria flourish in the gut and fight off invading bacteria.

Opt for zinc and selenium rich-foods: Foods like meat, seeds, nuts, eggs, mushrooms etc. have therapeutic role in preventing and treating sepsis.

Boost your immune system: Eat immune boosting foods like oranges, broccoli, ginger, almonds etc. Doing that will help you prevent minor infections that can lead to sepsis.

Novel device shows promise to predict sepsis

Researchers have developed a new computer-aided model to identify early symptoms of sepsis-- a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection.

Sepsis is a major cause of death in hospitals, and early detection is key to preventing deaths. Every hour of delay is linked to a 7 per cent reduction of survival.

The study showed that the computer-aided National Early Warning Score (cNEWS) determined if it could enhance the accuracy of predicting sepsis. The score can trigger screening for sepsis within 30 minutes.

"The main advantage of these computer models is that they are designed to incorporate data that exist in the patient record, can be easily automated and place no extra burden on the hospital staff to collect additional information," said a Prof.

"These risk scores should support, rather than replace, clinical judgment. We hope they will heighten awareness of sepsis with additional information on this serious condition," he added, in the paper published.

cNEWS will now be introduced carefully into hospitals with appropriate information technology infrastructure, the study noted.

A New Way to Treat Vertigo

Do you suffer from chronic vertigo or dizziness? In severe cases, your doctor can prescribe you a medication, though this comes with a host of problems. Thankfully, there is a special treatment that you can try and it is free and safe enough to practice at home.

Before we get into technique let's take a closer look at what vertigo is. Vertigo isn't just dizziness. It is a debilitating condition that can lead to life-threatening consequences, like higher risks of falls and car accidents. People who have experienced vertigo report that everything about them moves and spins. They will be unable to drive and walk and will have to hold onto a wall. It is a terrifying experience.

Thankfully, otolaryngologist Dr. says that this special method will stamp vertigo right out when the patient starts to experience its first signs. But what causes vertigo? It usually stems from a complex inner ear issue where a build-up of particles start shifting upon movement, making the sufferer feel an intense spinning sensation. Recognizing this, Dr. realized that by using a twisting and turning motion she was able to release the built-up particles, alleviating the symptoms of dizziness. She then developed an exercise for her patients which anyone can do at home.

Here's How:
1. Get down on your knees and sit on the backs of your heels.
2. Tilt your head back with your eyes aimed at the ceiling. If your dizziness increases momentarily, don't worry.
3. While on your knees, put hands on the floor in front of you and let your head hang loose with your chin slightly tucked in.
4. Turn your head to either your right or left elbow depending on which ear you need to treat.

Bear in mind that it's important you achieve the right form.
