Here’s why okra or bhindi is a superfood for diabetics!

Your very own okra or bhindi, a staple vegetable enjoyed by many is becoming a superfood for diabetes. Experts believe that the fruit-vegetable has properties that can control blood glucose level, help in weight management and boost overall health. Here are 7 benefits of okra / bhindi that you need to know-

How okra helps to control diabetes
Here are a few ways how okra or bhindi can help you control diabetes if included in your diet regularly:
It is rich in fibre: A fibre rich diet can do a lot of good to a diabetic. Okra being rich in soluble fibre helps in reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, thus regulating blood sugar levels after a meal.

It has anti-diabetic properties: Many studies indicate that the vegetable has certain enzymes that help metabolise carbohydrates, improve insulin production and beta cells in the pancreas, the very cells responsible for insulin production.

It helps to control weight: Weight management plays a key role in managing diabetes and keeping it’s complications at bay. Okra just helps to make your struggles with weight loss easier being low in calories — a serving of 100 gm of the fruit vegetable has less than 33 calories.

It has a low glycemic index: Foods that are low in glycemic index release sugar gradually into the blood stream and hence help to regularise the blood sugar levels.

It is a storehouse of vitamins and minerals: Okra has a fair share of vitamin C a vital nutrient that helps improve immunity. A person with diabetes is always prone to suffer from various infections and diseases for which okra acts as a natural prevention. Also, folate or Vitamin B9 is another critical nutrient present that helps to improve brain functions.

It is a good source of antioxidants: According to research published in Nutrition Journal, okra has a higher concentration of antioxidants than most vegetables. These antioxidants prevent damage the cells from free radicals and inhibit the growth of cancer cells keeping the vital organs healthy that could suffer due to fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

How to include okra in your diet
Here are few ways in which you can have okra in your diet:

Okra water: Wash okra or bhindi thoroughly and cut it into pieces. Next, add the pieces to a glass of water and keep it covered overnight and drink it in the morning. This water is said to mimic the properties of insulin and help regulate blood sugar levels.

Boiled okra: Admittedly, this isn’t an irresistible dish. Simply boil okra, add a dash of salt and squeeze half of lemon to it for taste. Eat it as a snack to reap the benefits.

Vegetable preparation: Aloo bhindi, bhindi masala, mixed vegetable with bhindi, any way you choose to have it, go ahead and gorge on it. Just be careful with oil and spices. Too much of oil can ruin the goodness of the vegetable.

Why you shouldn’t be too optimistic with okra:
While there are studies, that indicate that okra or bhindi can help control diabetes it doesn’t mean you throw away your medicines. Remember, nothing can cure diabetes no matter how promising it looks. So have okra as a supplement to your medications, not as a one-time cure.

Diabetes is affecting millions today and it has become difficult for people to manage symptoms of diabetes. Diabetic diet can be one difficult topic to understand. If you are a diabetic, you need to add such foods to your diet which do not impact your blood sugar levels too much. Foods that can lower blood sugar levels are the best foods that a diabetic can add to his/her diet. One such remedy for diabetes which can control diabetes and reduce blood sugar levels is mango leaf. Mango leaves are loaded with properties that can help you manage diabetes. They can contribute to a drop in blood sugar levels. Various studies have also highlighted the benefits of mango leaves in managing diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. However, more research is needed to testify how far they are beneficial.

Diabetes diet: Mango leaves for diabetes

''Mango leaf extract (Mangiferin) has the ability to inhibit the enzyme alpha glucosidase, which helps reduce carbohydrate metabolism in intestine, and hence blood glucose levels. More research is needed to find out the exact dosage of the leaf extract,'' says a Consultant Endocrinology.

Mango leaves have the capability to improve insulin production and distribution of glucose. They can help in stabilising blood sugar levels. Mango leaves are also loaded with pectin, vitamin C and fibre. Together they are beneficial for both diabetes and cholesterol.

Diabetes diet: How to use mango leaves to lower blood sugar levels?

You need to follow a very simple method to use mango leaves for diabetes. All you need to do is take 10-15 mango leaves and boil them in water properly. After boiling the leaves properly, leave them overnight. Strain the water and drink it as the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Drinking this concoction every morning regularly for few months may have magical effects on your blood sugar levels.

Mango Leaves For Diabetes

Mango is known as the ‘king of fruits’ — a well-known summer fruit that finds a number of uses in the Indian cuisine. Both raw and ripe mangoes are used to prepare dozens of dishes including mains, sides and especially accompaniments like chutneys and pickles. Mango drinks are especially popular in tropical countries, for their amazing taste and flavour and their ability to quench thirst like nothing else. Mangoes also have a number of health benefits; from supplying the body with healthy fibre to improving digestion, boosting immunity and keeping us hydrated. However, the mango tree has much more to give us than just its juicy and delicious fruit. For example, did you know that even mango leaves can provide with a lot of health benefits? The shiny, green leaves have a number of health benefits, due to which they have traditionally been used in home remedies in ancient medicinal practices. One such purported benefit of mango leaves is its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and manage diabetes.
Mango leaves generally have a reddish or purplish hue when they are young, but as they mature, they become dark green with a pale underside. These leaves have powerful antioxidant properties and are rich in flavonoids and phenol. They are consumed in both powder and decoction form. The latter is produced by boiling mango leaves in water. In South East Asia, the tender mango leaves are cooked as is and eaten. They also have anti-microbial properties and the young leaves have a number of medicinal benefits.
How To Use Mango Leaves To Manage Diabetes
Mango leaves have been used in Chinese medicine to control diabetes. An ancient Chinese remedy involves using mango leaf extracts to manage diabetes and asthma, through their abundance of nutrients. However, one particular scientific study in 2010 also provides credibility to the ability of mango leaves to manage diabetes. The study showed that mice who were given mango leaf extracts, absorbed less glucose than those who weren’t. This is because mango leaf extracts have been known to increase insulin production in the body and also fight cholesterol in blood, due to the presence of vitamin C, pectin and fibre in the leaves. Moreover, mango leaves have also been known to provide relief from diabetic symptoms like frequent urination, blurry visions, etc.
A diabetes home remedy involving mango leaves suggests that drinking the water that has been used to boil about 10 to 15 fresh mango leaves after letting it sit overnight, is effective to control and manage diabetes. However, there is limited scientific evidence about the effectiveness of this home remedy. It is advisable to consult a certified dietitian or a clinical nutritionist before making any changes or additions in your diabetes diet.

4 Foods That Every Diabetic Must Have

Scientists have found a new gene which may prove to be critical in regulation of insulin, the key hormone in diabetes - from a family with both high and low blood sugar conditions.Diabetes is a group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood (high blood glucose). According to WHO, by the year 2030, Diabetes would become one of the leading killers globally.

According to the study published, besides Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, nearly 1-2 per cent of cases of the blood sugar condition is due to impairment in a gene called MAFA, that can impair production of insulin and also cause insulinomas - insulin-producing tumours in pancreas.

These tumours are typically triggered by low blood sugar levels, in contrast to diabetes which leads to high blood sugar levels.

"We were initially surprised about the association of two apparently contrasting conditions within the same families - diabetes which is associated with high blood sugar and insulinomas associated with low blood sugar," said the lead author.

"Our research shows that, surprisingly, the same gene defect can impact the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas to lead to these two opposing medical conditions," the author added.

Another significant revelation made by the study was the link between diabetes and gender. The findings revealed that males were more prone to developing diabetes, while insulinomas were more commonly found in females, but the reasons behind this difference are as yet unknown.

For the study the team studied a family, with a unique case where several individuals suffered from diabetes, while other members developed insulinomas in their pancreas.

The findings could prove to be a path breaking intervention in the field of diabetes management. This is the first time a defect in MAFA gene has been linked with a disease. The resultant mutant protein was found to be abnormally stable, having a longer life in the cell, and therefore significantly more abundant in the beta cells than its normal version.

There's lot that you can do on domestic front to help manage diabetes better. Your diet plays a huge role. These nutritious foods not only help in diabetes management but can also prevent the risk of diabetes.

1. Leafy greens: Kale, mustard leaves, turnip leaves and methi are low in calories and carbohydrates and therefore, they do not cause sudden spikes to your blood sugar levels. They are also packed with fiber and Vitamin C, which acts a powerful antioxidant.

2. Bitter gourd: Bitter gourd contains active substances that lend anti-diabetic properties like charantin which is known for its blood glucose-lowering effect and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p. The best way to consume it is to have fresh bitter gourd juice early morning on an empty stomach.

3. Whole grains: Whole grains like barley and oats are full of fibre which digests slowly to keep you blood sugar from spiking suddenly. Consuming whole grains regularly helps in preventing weight gain which is a big risk factor for diabetes.

4. Flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds: Flaxseed contains large amounts of an insoluble fibre called lignan. Flaxseeds help in reducing the chances of heart complications and also the risk of strokes linked with diabetes. Keep a handful of pumpkin seeds with you to fight cravings for fatty and sugary foods.

This New Treatment Could Provide Weeks of Glucose Control For Type 2 Diabetes Patients

To control their blood sugar levels, people with type 2 diabetes constantly need to rely on medication, but it's a tricky condition to manage, especially if you need daily insulin shots.

Researchers have been working on a new method for delivering diabetes drugs to make them last longer in the body. Now a recent study using both mice and monkeys has shown potential for treatments that would only require a couple of injections a month.

Some of the latest-generation type 2 diabetes drugs contain a molecule called GLP1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which stimulates insulin production in the body only when it needs more glucose.

That sounds ideal, but unfortunately, GLP1 has a really short half-life - it breaks down in the body quickly, making it an impractical long-term treatment on its own.

By combining it with other molecules, it's possible to extend the half-life of GLP1. But that method still only gets us to about 3-7 days.

Right now, patients already have some options that can be injected weekly, but scientists are looking for a way to slow down the release of the drug itself.

Now a research team  has managed to combine GLP1 with a bio-polymer molecule that starts out as a liquid in colder temperatures, but thickens into a gel-like substance in reaction to body heat.

This means the solution can be administered with a simple injection, but once it gets into the body, the drug is released very slowly, so it can control blood glucose levels for longer with just one dose.

To test how their new solution would work for actual diabetes treatment, the researchers tried the drug in both mice and in rhesus monkeys - two species with well-established diabetes models.

They got exciting results in both: in mice, the new GLP1 solution controlled glucose levels for 10 days after just one injection; in monkeys, whose metabolism is slower, the effects lasted up to 17 days.

More than two weeks for one injection is better than any diabetes drug currently on the market.

The team thinks that because human metabolism is even slower than in monkeys, theoretically the drug could last longer in people, perhaps requiring just one injection a month.

"Pre-clinical data presents compelling evidence that this construct would require no more than two injections a month for humans, and possibly as few as one per month, especially given the dose-stacking potential of this system," the researchers write in the paper..

The team thinks their new approach to 'trapping' GLP1 in the gel-like substance could be applied to other types of medication, too.

Of course, it's important to note that so far the method has only worked in animal studies, and scientists will need to do more research to see how the principles would translate to human use.

GLP1-based medications are currently not the first-line treatment for people with type 2 diabetes, but this sounds like an exciting step towards making diabetes management easier for many.

The study was published in a journal.
