10 small daily habits that help boost metabolism for better gut health

How to boost our metabolism?

Our gut is like a city which is home to trillions of bacteria that help digest food, absorb nutrients, and keep our metabolism running smoothly. But what if our metabolism is sluggish and our digestion feels off? The good news is that small daily habits can make a big difference!
From sipping warm water to dancing to our favourite tunes, here are 10 fun and effective habits that can rev up our metabolism and keep our gut happy.

Start the day with a glass of warm lemon water

Start the day with a glass of warm lemon water

Think of this as your metabolism’s morning alarm clock. Warm lemon water helps flush out toxins, kick-start digestion, and even help in the absorption of nutrients. Plus, it hydrates the body after a long night of fasting!

Get your daily dose of fiber

Get your daily dose of fiber

Fiber is your gut’s best friend. It keeps digestion smooth, reduces bloating, and even helps regulate blood sugar. Whole grains, beans, fruits, and veggies are all fantastic fibre sources. Aim for at least 25–30 grams a day.

Don’t forget strength training

No, you don’t have to lift heavy weights! Simple bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups help build muscle, which in turn increases resting metabolism. A stronger body burns more calories—even when you’re just binge-watching your favourite show!

Move more—Even if it's just a little

Move more—Even if it's just a little

You don’t need to hit the gym for hours. Simple activities like taking the stairs, stretching between work calls, or even dancing while cooking can keep your metabolism active and improve gut motility. Every little movement counts!

Chew your food like a slow eater's club member

Your stomach doesn’t have teeth, so help it out by chewing properly! Eating too fast can lead to bloating and indigestion while chewing thoroughly signals your gut to release digestive enzymes—helping your metabolism process food more efficiently.

Sip on herbal teas

Green tea, ginger tea, or even a cup of warm turmeric milk can do wonders for your metabolism and gut health. These drinks contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that support digestion and fat burning.

Eat probiotic and prebiotic foods daily

Eat probiotic and prebiotic foods daily

Think of probiotics (like curd, and pickles) as friendly gut bacteria, while prebiotics (like bananas, garlic, and oats) are the food that keeps them thriving. A balanced gut microbiome leads to better digestion and a metabolism that doesn’t snooze!

Get enough sleep (yes, it matters!)

Poor sleep slows down metabolism and messes with hunger hormones, making you crave unhealthy foods. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep to allow your gut and metabolism to function at their best. You might not consider it a very important aspect of your life but when you work towards improving your sleep cycle you will see the difference in your lifestyle.

Spice things up (literally!)

Spice things up (literally!)
Add a little heat to your meals with chili peppers, black pepper, or ginger. These spices contain compounds that temporarily increase your metabolic rate while also improving digestion. Bonus: They make food taste amazing!

Laugh more and stress less

Yes, laughing burns calories! But more importantly, stress disrupts gut health and slows metabolism. Activities like meditation, deep breathing, or even watching a comedy show can help manage stress and keep your gut balanced.

This Guide Will Help You Detect Diabetes Before it Happens

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent new epidemics in the world, and one of the fastest-growing diseases. One of the main reasons for this is the unhealthy lifestyle and habits that are formed by modern living.

It is of immense importance that everyone is aware of the signs of type II diabetes because the best way to avoid the disease is to make early detection and engage in actions that will prevent diabetes from developing.

The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'. The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full-blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.

So first, know the symptoms:
* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot

* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.

* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.

* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with exercising.

* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.

* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.

* Blurred night vision. young woman yawning on white background

Tests that help in early detection
If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you get yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:

1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:
outstretched hand towards a glucose test
This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If the blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.
2. Oral Glucose Test
Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.

Don't panic if your test results reveal that you are a pre-diabetic, there are still ways to reverse the process.

How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes
Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood sugar levels, they are not a long-term solution. A long-term reversal of the symptoms requires:

1. Daily exercise:
If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles become less dependent on insulin and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.

2. Watch your carb consumption.
To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice, and boiled potatoes. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies, and cakes from your daily consumption.

3. Drink LOTS of water.
I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.

4. Change to a high fiber diet
Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit, and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.

5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.
This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high-stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.

These are the natural ways to fight early diabetes and have no side effects. So make sure you stick to a healthy diet, daily exercise and watch what you eat to keep diabetes away.

Weight loss: How to lose weight without exercising

Weight loss: How to lose weight without exercising

Losing weight can be a huge challenge both physically and mentally. From sticking to a strict calorie deficit diet routine, controlling cravings, drinking the right amount of water, walking the sufficient number of steps to religiously working out every day, it takes a huge toll on you. However, it is almost faulty to believe that one cannot lose weight without working out. You might also curse yourself for not feeling those happy hormones doing their job whenever you work out, basically, it might seem like a chore to you. Fairly enough, losing weight is not really so much about working out as we are commonly taught that it is. Delve right into the following points to know what can actually very effectively replace your daily workout chore-readmore

Start cooking your own meals

You might think we suggested this to make you work out indirectly, but really no. Besides being easy on your wallet, cooking your own meal makes you in charge of what ingredients you choose to put in your food, decide the ideal quantity as well as make you savour each bite of your own hard work rather delicately and slowly. Eating food made at home, especially by yourself, is proven to promote eating less and becoming healthier.

Eat more mindfully and have your food slowly

Believe it or not, eating speedily is associated with gaining calories as much as eating junk food is. So, go slow. Do not want to finish your food like the hare finished the race. Eating slowly makes you feel full with a comparatively less intake in terms of quantity and helps you gain significantly a lower number of calories per bite consumed.

Surround yourself with healthy foods

Scientifically, you eat what you most frequently physically see around yourself. If it’s out of your reach, it is most definitely out of your stomach, hence make sure you pack away all the unhealthy oily, packed food and replace it with as many healthy (read: fresh and unpacked) snacks as you can.

Take less stress, soak that Vitamin D and hydrate more

Losing weight is directly linked with the amount of stress that goes up in your brain. Lack of sleep and extensive stress can create a severe hormonal imbalance, which hinders your weight loss process and makes you gain weight. Do not let your stress get the best of you, that is, do not make it make you lose sleep or go to your comfort food. Remember nothing great can be achieved from the comfort zone. Besides, whenever you feel like stress is catching up to you, make it a point to welcome it with a handsome amount of water or a simple sunbath. Water and Vitamin D are the key drivers of weight loss, they are your best friends per se. You will surely achieve all your weight targets with water, Vitamin D and calmness by your side.

Control your serial snacking habits

This is where it gets real. Go ahead, be truthful to yourself. Binging on snacks while surfing through your favourite OTT platforms or shopping sites sounds like one of your favourite past times? Well, it’s time for you to switch hobbies, or switch the snack you lay your hands on. Sensibly enough, any fruit, dry fruit, sprouts or low-calorie snacks like puffed rice, fox nuts and popcorn (without the gallop of butter) make a really good and tasty replacement.

Diabetes: These Leaves Can Lower Your Blood Sugar Levels Effectively

Diabetes is affecting millions today and it requires proper management to lead a normal life. It has become difficult for people to manage symptoms of diabetes. Diabetic diet can be one difficult topic to understand. If you are a diabetic, you need to add such foods to your diet which do not impact your blood sugar levels too much. Foods that can lower blood sugar levels are the best foods that a diabetic can add to his/her diet. Such foods will also help in diabetic treatment. One such remedy for diabetes which can control diabetes and reduce blood sugar levels is mango leaf. Mango leaves are loaded with properties that can help you manage diabetes. Diabetes management (controlling blood sugar levels) can also help you prevent the complications of diabetes. They can contribute to a drop in blood sugar levels. Various studies have also highlighted the benefits of mango leaves in managing diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. However, more research is needed to testify how far they are beneficial.

 Mango leaves for diabetes
''Mango leaf extract (Mangiferin) has the ability to inhibit the enzyme alpha glucosidase, which helps reduce carbohydrate metabolism in intestine, and hence blood glucose levels. More research is needed to find out the exact dosage of the leaf extract,'' says Dr. Mahesh. D. M, Consultant Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Mango leaves have the capability to improve insulin production and distribution of glucose. They can help in stabilising blood sugar levels. Mango leaves are also loaded with pectin, vitamin C and fibre. Together they are beneficial for both diabetes and cholesterol.

Healthy eating is good for everyone, but it's especially important for people who have diabetes. That's because healthy eating will keep your blood glucose (also called blood sugar) within a safe target range.

How to use mango leaves to lower blood sugar levels?

You need to follow a very simple method to use mango leaves for diabetes. All you need to do is take 10-15 mango leaves and boil them in water properly. After boiling the leaves properly, leave them overnight. Strain the water and drink it as the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Drinking this concoction every morning regularly for few months may have magical effects on your blood sugar levels.

Nonetheless, if you are a diabetic, you must carefully watch your diet. Follow all the instructions given by your doctor carefully to treat diabetes effectively. Eat a healthy and a balanced diet, exercise regularly and take less stress.

10 Best Ways to Lose Weight Without Dieting

The most popular New Year’s Resolution is always to lose weight. People pack on the pounds throughout the year and recognize the need for change as the new one starts. And while it’s not the new year yet, maybe you’re already thinking about how to lose a few extra pounds in time for the holiday season. The great news is that it’s possible to lose weight without dieting. The bad news is, you might need to make a few tweaks to your habits if you want it to happen. Here are the ten best ways to shed a few pounds without completely depriving yourself of the foods you love.

Shrink Your Plate Size

It sounds impossible, but it’s important to eat your food on smaller sized plates. This trick actually makes you feel full faster. Something about eating everything on your plate tells your brain that you’re done sooner. It also helps you manage portion sizes without needing to measure anything.

Don’t Drink Your Calories

While a smoothie or iced latte both sound amazing, they are easy places for you to overdo it on the calories. When you drink your food, you skip the step of chewing, which is a process that tells your body there are calories coming and what to do with it. Also, most high-calorie beverages are also sugar bombs that don’t help with weight loss. Switch to water instead and drink it throughout the day.

Say Goodbye to Your Smartphone

Okay, maybe you don’t need to say goodbye to it forever, but if you want to lose weight, it’s important to put the technology away while you eat. This goes for eating at your computer or television as well. It’s best to eat if you’re not distracted by some type of screen at all. The distractions keep you from gauging how much you’ve eaten which can lead to overeating.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is vital especially if you want to lose weight fast. A good night’s sleep allows you to feel rested, reduces your stress, and promotes balanced hormone levels. This is especially important because so many hormones involved in fat storage and release are regulated with sleep. Some hormone imbalances lead to cravings and can cause you to overeat on junk food. Try your best to go to sleep at the same time each night. Also, sleep in a cool, dark room as too much light pollution can disrupt sleep.

Walk More

Got a FitBit or a smartwatch? These are a great way to monitor your daily activity levels and steps. Use one of them or another pedometer to measure how much you’re walking on a daily basis. Once you get an average over the course of a week, make an effort to increase your steps by 2,000 per day. This could be as simple as taking a walk around the block during your work break, going for a brisk walk after dinner, or taking your time in the grocery store.

Eat Breakfast

Statistics show that up to 56% of adults don’t eat breakfast daily. It’s important to eat something nourishing when you first wake up in the morning to give your body the fuel it needs to start the day. People who try and skip breakfast will often choose to eat unhealthy foods if they get hungry before lunch. A healthy breakfast also helps rev up your metabolism so you can burn calories more efficiently throughout the day.

Slow Your Chewing

Have you ever scarfed down a meal so fast you wondered what just happened? Take your time when you eat. Chew each bite thoroughly before you swallow. Then take a 15-second break before you take your next bite. If you want to lose weight without dieting, you need to make sure your brain and your stomach are on the same page. Eating too fast doesn’t give your brain time to recognize it’s full. When you slow down, not only do you reduce your risk of choking on your food, you also help your body to experience the feeling of fullness.

Start a Workout Routine

We mentioned you should walk more, but it’s also important to get in a dedicated workout at least 4-5 times a week. Pick something you like so you can stick with it long-term. Exercise can be anything from swimming laps in a pool, to lifting weights, to a home workout routine you find on YouTube. While some say to workout for an hour each day, it’s entirely possible to get a great workout in 30 minutes. Don’t overdo it, but find a consistent time and space for exercise in your home or at a gym. It also helps if you can find a friend or family member to workout with. It helps hold you accountable to your goals.

Reduce Your Stress

Sounds easy right? It turns out that stress hormones in your body block your ability to burn fat. When you feel stressed or anxious, your body increases the amount of cortisol it releases into your bloodstream. This hormone boosts fat storage, especially in your belly. This often leads to metabolic issues further complicating your ability to lose weight. Meditation, yoga, reading a book, and taking a bath are quick ways to lower stress. Also, look for areas in your life causing you the most stress and find ways to improve situations that impact you the most.

Eat More Protein

Protein is a powerful way to help you lose weight without dieting. When you eat enough protein at each meal, you’ll feel full longer. This is in part because protein-packed foods trigger the release of the hormone ghrelin which is involved in your ability to feel full. Foods with a lot of protein include kidney beans, steak, pork, tofu, and lean chicken. They are filled with essential nutrients that your body needs for recovery and growth.

It’s very possible to lose weight without dieting. Do one, two, or all of these things to help your body burn fat and feel great. And, do it all without traditional “diets”.
