Remedies for Muscle Spasms, Leg Cramps and Charley Horse

Muscle spasms can occur at any time of day. They can cause sudden pain, throbbing and cramping that may at times feel unbearable. If muscle pain has effected you, it may be time to make some changes to your diet, posture, fluid intake and exercise routine. But before looking at the natural treatments you can do, discover more about muscle spasms:
muscle spasms
What Are Muscle Spasms?
Muscle spasms are involuntary contractions of one or more muscles. During a spasm, your leg, neck or back may cramp up and tighten without you trying to move them. They tend to stay this way for a period of time and are unable to relax.

The feet are the most common area for muscle spasms to occur, but it is possible to get them anywhere, including around your abdomen, ribs, hands and ankles. Muscle spasms come and go depending on what you've been eating, your sleeping patterns and even if it is that time of the month, in the case of women.

One of the most common and agonizing types of muscle spasms is the charley horse, which causes cramping in the calf muscles. The pain can be so bad that it can wake you up. Other types can kick in when you stand up, get out of bed in the morning, or just after exercising.

The older you get, the more likely you are to suffer from occasional muscle spasms, primarily because we lose muscle mass each year as we age. This means that there's more pressure on our remaining muscles to support our body weight.

Nevertheless, be it age or losing muscle mass or not, just about everyone experiences muscle spasms at one time or another. People who are especially prone to dealing with muscle cramps frequently include anyone with a poor diet, poor circulation, high levels of inflammation and athletes and women who are pregnant or experiencing PMS. Whatever the reason may be, here are six natural treatments for muscle spasms:

6 Natural Treatments for Muscle Spasms
1. Prevent Electrolyte Imbalances Being deficient in potassium or magnesium can be a cause of muscle spasms. If you've been working out without refueling afterward or are beginning your menstrual cycle soon, or eat a diet that is low in fresh foods, you could be low in these two essential nutrients that help muscles contract normally.

Low potassium also known as hypokalemia, develops when potassium in the blood drops below normal. It is one of the most common reasons people deal with leg cramps, including those that strike in the middle of the night. Being low in B vitamins can also increase cramps especially in your legs. Get more B vitamins by increasing your intake in eggs, grass-fed meat and wild-caught fish as well as ancient grains and legumes.

2. Stretch and Massage Your Muscles
Staying active is a great way to prevent muscle spasms. People who are physically fit maintain more muscle mass and usually have less inflammation. They also tend to be more flexible. It is important to warm-up properly and cool down before and after exercise as this can help prevent muscles from becoming overly fatigued, strained or pulled.

Prior to working out, try warming up by jogging on the spot, getting your heart rate up and do dynamic movements that bring blood to your major muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Spend the last 10 to 15 minutes stretching your major muscle groups by holding stretches for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Focus on the vulnerable areas particularly the hamstrings, quadriceps and ankles. Furthermore, be sure to add plenty of rest for proper muscle recovery as a preventative measure.

If dealing with a charlie horse, try stretching once the pain comes on. Sit down with your legs straight in front of you and pull your toes/top of your feet back toward you to stretch your hamstring. If the back of your thigh is affected, bend your affected leg and grab your foot behind you, pulling your foot up toward your back, stretching out the front of your thigh.

3. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration may be a cause for your muscles to spasm and cramp up. Be sure to drink enough water every day based on your body size. Remember that if the weather is very hot and you are sweating, or you've been exercising or drinking alcohol, be sure to have even more than you usually do to stay hydrated. This helps prevent muscle problems caused by heat exhaustion, intense thirst or heavy sweating.

4. Use Ice or Heat Packs on Sensitive Muscles
When dealing with pain, tightness or cramping, heat relaxes the muscles. Try applying heat to the areas where you frequently get spasms by using a heating pad. A steam room or sauna may also be a good option. The same thing can be done using an ice pack, applied to swollen or painful areas several times per day.

5. Adjust Your Posture
If you are hunching over for several hours a day, or are exercising and walking with bad posture you may be putting yourself at risk of muscle pain, including back spasms or muscle spasms in the legs and neck. Kyphosis is a condition caused by rounding or forward curvature of the spine which can lead to back spasms, general back pain and overall stiffness. Slouching over can weaken your neck muscles over time and also cause strain to your back muscles. This will increase inflammation in your upper back and shoulder area. See a chiropractor for adjustments or a physical therapist if the condition becomes frequent and serious enough.

6. Take a Bath with Epsom Salt
Epsom salts are naturally rich in magnesium that seeps into your skin to reach tense muscles when added to a warm bath. They also help prevent magnesium deficiency, ease stress, soothe muscles and detoxify the body. A hot bath will also help relax the muscles and ease anxiety.

Home Remedies To Reduce High Creatinine Levels

Creatinine is a chemical waste product of muscle metabolism that is eliminated through the kidneys. Persistently high levels of creatinine indicate that the kidneys may not be functioning properly. The normal range of creatinine in blood is:
  • 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL (or 53 to 106 mcmol/L) for males, and
  • 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL (or 44 to 97 mcmol/L) for females.
The values may vary slightly depending on different laboratories and their techniques. Men usually have higher levels than women because creatinine increases with muscle mass.
Factors that contribute to high creatinine levels include dehydration, inadequate water intake; medications like ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen, chemotherapy drugs and others; strenuous exercise; chronic diseases like kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid disorders; and excessive blood loss.

Muscle building, taking the dietary supplement creatine and eating large amounts of meat can also elevate creatinine levels.

Some common symptoms of high creatinine are digestive problems like nausea, vomiting and poor appetite; fatigue; urinary changes like frequent night urination, decreased urine output and dark colored urine; edema; itchy skin; and shortness of breath.

As high creatinine levels may indicate kidney problems and kidney damage, it is best to see your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

In addition, you can try some home remedies and dietary tips to help manage the problem. Drinking plenty of water, for instance, is highly recommended when dealing with this problem.

Also, there are some herbs that act as natural diuretics and thus help provide some relief. You can follow one or more of these herbal remedies daily for a few weeks or until your creatinine levels are reduced.

It is important to consult a healthcare professional before taking these herbs or their combinations because they may interfere with certain prescription drugs or may not be suitable for some cases. Some of these remedies may not be suitable for those with a history of kidney stones or other pre-existing conditions.

Here the top 10 home remedies to reduce high creatinine levels.
1. Chamomile Tea
A study found decreased creatinine levels in study participants who drank chamomile tea. Plus, this herb will work as a mild sedative and induce relaxation.
  1. Put two or three teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers in a cup of hot water.
  2. Let it steep for three to five minutes.
  3. Strain the tea and drink it.
  4. Drink a few cups of chamomile tea daily.
2. Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettle can help remove metabolic wastes and promote renal excretion due to its diuretic properties. Plus, it purifies the blood and improves immunity.
  1. Add two to three teaspoons of dried nettle leaves to a cup of hot water.
  2. Let it steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Strain and drink it.
  4. Drink this nettle tea once or twice daily.
Note: This remedy can interfere with blood-thinning, high blood pressure, diuretic and diabetic medications. Consult your doctor before using this remedy.

3. Dandelion Root
Dandelion root tea also works as a natural diuretic to flush out toxins and lower creatinine levels. It also helps improve kidney function and relieve edema or swelling due to water retention.
  1. Put one tablespoon of dried dandelion root powder in a cup of hot water.
  2. Allow it to steep for about 10 minutes.
  3. Strain and drink it.
  4. Drink this tea two or three times daily for a few days or weeks.
Note: Dandelion may interact with diabetes and high blood pressure medications.

4. Cinnamon
Due to its diuretic properties, cinnamon is considered good for those suffering from high creatinine levels and kidney problems. It helps increase kidney output and promotes renal filtration ability. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, thus preventing further renal damage.
Incorporate cinnamon in your diet by adding it to warm beverages, smoothies, baked goods, cereals and other foods.
Note: Do not take this herb in excess or it may lead to liver and kidney damage. Though there is no established dosage still, the generally recommendation is one-half to one teaspoon of cinnamon a day.

5. Siberian Ginseng
Siberian ginseng containing eleutheroside compounds is mostly used as a health supplement for its energy-boosting properties. It is also an effective remedy to get rid of excess creatinine because it revitalizes the kidneys and promotes renal circulation. Plus, you’ll get its anti-fatigue and anti-stress benefits.

The general recommended dosage for this herb is 300 to 600 mg per day. For proper dosage and suitability for your condition, consult your doctor. It can also be taken with cinnamon.
Note: Do not confuse Siberian ginseng with other types of ginseng, especially Asian ginseng which has an anti-diuretic effect. Seek your doctor’s advice before taking Siberian ginseng because it may interfere with many prescription drugs.

6. Astragalus
Astragalus is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that helps slow the progression of chronic kidney disease. It works as a mild diuretic and helps improve creatinine levels. It contains a diuretic compound called asparagine that helps eliminate fluid through the kidneys. This herb also strengthens metabolism and digestion.
  1. Boil a handful of dried astragalus root slices in one quart of water for 30 minutes.
  2. Strain and drink the tea.
  3. Drink this daily between meals.
Note: Those who have autoimmune diseases should consult a doctor before taking this herb as it may stimulate the immune system.

7. Corn Silk
Corn silk acts as a natural diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent. It helps increase urine output, thus aiding in removing excess creatinine. It also reduces edema and lowers high blood pressure.
  1. Put two teaspoons of dried corn silk in a cup.
  2. Pour boiling water over it.
  3. Cover and allow it to steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Strain and drink this tea three times a day.
Note: Do not use this remedy if you are allergic to corn or have a history of liver or kidney disease. It may also decrease blood sugar and potassium levels.

8. Sage
Salvia officinalis, commonly known as sage, has been found to be beneficial in increasing the rate at which creatinine is removed in kidney failure patients because it helps filter out and eliminate creatinine from the body. It also increases circulation to the kidneys.
  1. Add one teaspoon of dried sage or 10 fresh leaves to a cup of hot water.
  2. Let it steep for five to 10 minutes.
  3. Strain and drink this tea one to three times a day.
Note: Avoid this remedy if you have diabetes or a history of liver or kidney disease.

9. Chinese Rhubarb
Chinese rhubarb promotes intestinal detoxification and increases urine output. It lowers creatinine levels by increasing the excretion of metabolic waste products including creatinine. It also improves kidney function.
  1. Chop a stalk of Chinese rhubarb.
  2. Boil it in a cup of water.
  3. Strain and drink it twice daily for up to a week.
Note: Do not take this herb if you have a history of kidney stones.

10. Barley
Barley water works as a natural diuretic and kidney cleanser. It also helps reduce blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and treat nephrocalcinosis. Being rich in fiber, barley helps reduce blood sugar levels and improves digestion as well. Plus, it has a high nutritive value due to its rich vitamin and mineral content.
  1. Add one cup of barley in one liter or about four cups of water.
  2. Boil the solution for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Strain and drink it slowly.
  4. Drink it daily.
As barley is a whole grain, you can also replace refined flour in your diet with barley flour.
Note: Check with your doctor before taking this remedy as it may not be suitable for those on a potassium restricted diet.

Additional Tips
  • Increase your water and fluid intake.
  • Replace your regular tea, coffee or sodas with  herbal tea.
  • Avoid eating high protein foods, dairy products and other dietary sources of creatine until your creatinine levels reduce to normal.
  • Steer clear of high arginine foods like seafood, chocolate, gelatin, beer, soybeans, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and other nuts and seeds because they tend to increase the liver’s production of creatine.
  • Reduce minerals like sodium, potassium and phosphorus in your diet.
  • Include more carrots, cucumbers, garlic, onion and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.
  • Avoid strenuous activity as it promotes the breakdown of creatine into creatinine.

How to lower creatinine levels with diet

  • Reduce sodium intake: Consuming excess sodium can lead to many problems in the body, but having the right amount is still needed. Having too much of it, however, can lead your body to hold on to water, limiting urination. Excessive sodium can be found in fatty foods, fast foods, and food that is heavily processed. By making your own meals at home, you can effectively limit the amount of sodium you consume, as you will be in complete control of its addition.
  • Check your protein intake: Excessive consumption of protein can be very hard on the kidneys. In fact, people with kidney disease are instructed to follow a low-protein diet for this exact reason. High protein foods include beans, fish, milk, egg, lean meats, and red meats.
  • Avoid phosphorus rich foods: This is a substance that requires the kidney to excrete. Therefore, in those with kidney disease, it would be expected to see increased phosphorus levels during lab testing. Foods that are rich in phosphorous include bran, pumpkin seeds, cheese, sesame seeds, tahini, bacon, and number.
  • Limit the potassium intake: This is also a substance that is primarily excreted by the kidneys. Foods rich in potassium include avocados, cocoa powder, chocolates, prunes, and nuts
How to reduce creatinine through yoga
Yoga is a type of physical, mental, and spiritual exercise. The use of certain yoga positions and exercises may aid in the relief of certain kidney pathologies that lead to increased levels of creatinine in the body, such as IgA nephropathy. However, it is important to speak to your doctor before treating any condition not specifically recommended by your doctor first. The following is a yoga move that helps with creatinine clearance:
Spinal twist:
  • Sit up with the legs straight and in front of your, keeping the feet together and the spine straight up
  • Bend the left leg and place the heel of the left foot beside the right hip
  • Take the right leg over the right knee
  • Place the left hand on the right knee and the right hand placed behind you
  • Twist at the waist, shoulders, and neck in this order while you look over the right shoulder
  • Keep the spine straight
  • Hold this position and breathe
  • Repeat on the other side
