Toxin in centipede venom identified

A team of researchers from several institutions  have identified the toxin in golden head centipede venom. In their paper published, the group describes how they found the toxin that makes the venom so deadly to prey and also identified a possible antidote for it.

Researchers have known for quite some time that golden head centipedes (aka the Chinese red-headed centipede), which live in Asia and Hawaii are able to subdue prey larger than its own size, in some cases, much larger—testing in a lab showed a centipede was able to take down a mouse, a creature 15 times its size. Until now, it was not known what was in the venom that made it so powerful. In this new effort, the researchers report that they have isolated the toxin in the venom, which they call Ssm Spooky Toxin—the Ssm comes from the scientific name of the centipede, Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans. The team found the toxin by testing the chemicals in the venom one by one—a laborious process. The toxin works, the team reports, by blocking potassium from moving in and out of cells. Such blockage prevents the brain from signaling the heart to beat, and the animal dies very quickly. Potassium movement is also important for cells in airways, which means the victim of a bite also starts having problems breathing.

When people are bitten by a golden head centipede, they experience a lot of pain, so much that many take themselves to a hospital for relief. It is actually quite common—in Hawaii, the researchers note, centipede bites accounted for approximately 1 in 10 emergency room visits due to natural causes over the years 2004 to 2008 (averaging approximately 400 a year). Deaths from such bites are rare, however.

Prior research has shown that a drug called retigabine is able to reestablish potassium channels—it is normally used as an anticonvulsant medicine for epilepsy patients. In this case, it might be used instead as an antidote for people bitten by the centipede.

Key proteins regulating heart's electrical communication found

Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles have found that six proteins - five more than previously thought - regulate the rapid flow of electrical communication signals, coordinating heart cells to produce a stable heartbeat.
The smallest of these proteins directs the largest in performing its role of coordinating billions of heart cells during each heartbeat.
Together, the proteins synchronise the beating heart, the researchers claimed.
"The findings advance our understanding of cell-to-cell communication at the root of healthy heart function. When there is less cell communication, which occurs in failing hearts, chances are greater of disturbances in heart rhythm that can result in disability or death," said Robin Shaw, senior author of the study.
Till date, scientists had recognised just one protein involved in cell-to-cell communication that occurs through conduits known as 'gap junctions', said the study.
"The finding adds startling diversity to a key biological process whereby, heart cells communicate with each other electrically," said Eduardo Marbán, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.
"The implications are major for arrhythmias and heart failure," he added.
The researchers have also determined that a class of drugs known as 'mTOR inhibitors' - those already used for immunosuppression in organ transplants - can be used to prevent erratic and sometimes fatal heart rhythms.
A properly beating heart is necessary to pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs.
Cell-to-cell communication occurs in all other organs. The same proteins that help heart cells communicate also play a role in brain function, bone development and insulin production in the pancreas, the study said.

Revealed! Why mornings are deadliest for heart attack deaths

A  scientist has claimed that evidence from people suffering from heart disease supports the existence of the molecular link first discovered in laboratory mice between the body’s natural circadian rhythms and cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death.

He said that it pinpoints a previously unrecognised factor in the electrical storm that makes the heart’s main pumping chambers suddenly begin to beat erratically in a way that stops the flow of blood to the brain and body.
Termed ventricular fibrillation, the condition causes sudden cardiac death (SCD), in which the victim instantly becomes unconscious and dies unless CPR or a defibrillator is available to shock the heart back into its steady beat.

The peak risk hours when SCD strikes range from 6 am to 10 am, with a smaller peak in the late afternoon. Scientists long suspected a link between SCD and the 24-hour body clock, located in the brain.
It governs 24-hour cycles of sleep and wakefulness called circadian rhythms that coordinate a range of body functions with the outside environment.

His group discovered a protein called KLF15 that helps regulate the heart’s electrical activity, and occurs in the body in levels that change like clockwork throughout the day. KLF15 helps form channels that allow substances to enter and exit heart cells in ways critical to maintaining a normal, steady heartbeat.

They first discovered that patients with heart failure have lower levels of KLF15. Then, they established in laboratory mice that KLF15 is the molecular link between SCD and the circadian rhythm. And mice with low levels of the protein have the same heart problems as people with SCD.

BabyIt is quite fascinating how the foetus learns to recognise and react to the mother's voice before prior to birth. 

Babies in the womb respond to their mothers' voice, even paying attention when they're read a story, a new study has found. Researchers asked 74 women who were 36 weeks pregnant to read for two minutes while their babies' heart rate and movements were monitored.

They found babies stopped moving and lowered their heart rate when their mother started reading aloud to them, study lead author  said. "It is quite fascinating how the foetus learns to recognise and react to the mother's voice before prior to birth - here, we showed that they can detect onset of maternal voice and differences in maternal voice," she said.

"Some women were napping prior to asking them to read aloud from a passage - these foetuses showed a brief startle to onset of maternal voice," she said. She said the heart rate of foetuses lowered and movement stopped when mothers switched from chatting to reading aloud, it is reported.

"The near-term foetus has a mature auditory system that reliably detects and responds to sound," she said. The researchers concluded a mother's voice "shapes auditory learning in uterus with implications for postnatal recognition of, and preference for, the maternal voice".
