15 Little Known Facts About The Human Anatomy

The human anatomy is interesting. We have two of certain parts and organs, one of some. We feel a certain way sometimes but just never understand why sometimes. Some parts of the body grow while others remain the same and the list is endless.
The truth is, there’s even more to our bodies than meets the eye and here are fifteen little known or mind blowing facts about the human body.

1.In a single lifetime, you produce enough saliva to fill a swimming pool

As gross as this sounds, 25,000 quarts of saliva are produced by the average human. While it sounds like a bad thing, this saliva helps keep our bodies clean.People who have lower levels of saliva are more susceptible to oral infections.
On that note, you might as well know that in just a day, you produce a whole litre of mucus.

2.Sleeping for less than 7 hours a day decreases life expectancy

Sounds scary right?

Well, getting less than seven hours of sleep consistently is said to lower your life expectancy.

It is sad that often times, life always seems to stand in the way of our getting the amount of sleep our bodies need. This is especially the case for people with full time jobs in busy cities that will often keep you on the road too long making you get home late and have you up too early if you are to get to work in time. It’s almost like we can’t exactly win on this one but it does increase your chances of dying prematurely.

At night when you sleep, your brain is more active as it starts to prepare for the next day. It gets rid of toxins and certain information to ensure you wake up revitalized.

The most ideal number of sleep hours is eight, although babies need even more sleep for healthy growth.

3. You are at a bigger risk of dying of a heart attack on a Monday

As if Mondays aren’t already bad enough, here comes more reason to not like them. A lot always seems to happen on Mondays come to think of it and most of all that is usually negative, which subsequently causes stress.

Apparently, 20% more people succumb to heart attacks on this dreaded first day of the week.

4. A Human being can distinguish between 1 trillion different smells

One trillion!

As shocking as that number seems, it is true. People often underestimate the nose but you, the average human can tell between this immense number of odors which compared to how many colors the eye can tell from, is impeccable.

The eye can only distinguish between 10 million colors.

5. A baby has 99 more bones than an adult

Yes, as crazy as that might sound, it is a fact.

It is said that a new born baby has around three hundred and five bones compared to a fully grown adult who has two hundred and six. The explanation for this is that a baby’s skeleton is mostly made up of cartilage and as the baby grows to the point of adulthood, through a process called ossification, the cartilage turns into adult bone.

6.You have as much hair as a chimpanzee

This one is funny. Chimps usually appear to be so hairy. In fact they just look like a ball of hair, so how can the amount of hair on the average  human being be compared to the amount of hair on a chimp?

Well, it has an explanation.

The hair on a human being’s body is often incredibly fine and is also very light so it isn’t as easy to notice, while that on a chimpanzee is much thicker.

It is believed that that appearance of our hair is to actually make us sweat better but this is still unclear.

7. Your heart pumps enough blood to fill 200 train tanks

Well, in a single lifetime, your heart will keep pumping blood as long as it has oxygen supply. This blood pumped throughout this entire time is about 1.5 million barrels.

Did you know that as long as this same heart is supplied with oxygen continuously, it can keep pumping even if it is outside the body?

This is because of its own electrical impulse.

The amount of energy produced on a single day by your heart can also power a truck for, wait for it, 20 miles.

8. Music heals the body

I’m sure you’ve heard of cases where music is used by expectant ladies for the sake of keeping the unborn baby relaxed, among other things related to that entire period of expectancy, but the wonders of music surpass that.

Medical practitioners, mainly in cardiovascular units, are starting to incorporate music into treating of patients because it has been found to generally relax the body, lower their heart rate as well as their blood pressure.

Careful though with the kind of music for this purpose. It needs to be nice and slow in order to avoid sending the patients into a state of shock.

9. An unborn baby can actually save the mother

This is a very interesting fact. When a woman is expectant and has a malfunctioning organ, the foetus has a way of sending stem cells to save the mother.

It is a beautiful phenomenon because typically the mother’s body is what protects the foetus as it grows but it turns out, the mother can also count on her unborn baby in the event that she faces a health risk.

10. Your eyes  actually never change in size ,but the nose and ears do

Yes, your eyes as an adult are the exact size they were when you were still a baby. In fact, that is why babies usually look so cute and adorable. It’s because their eyes , other than being so bright, appear bigger.

Contrary to this, your ears and nose will always keep growing for as long as you are alive.

11. You lose 600,000 particles of skin in every hour

Do you realize that this is an equivalent of 1.5 pounds lost every year? Sure it doesn’t look like much but for automatic skin particle shedding, it is quite the figure.

That is a lot of dead cells.

12. The fastest human sense is hearing and the most active muscle is the eye

The average brain can tell sound faster than the blink of an eye. How fast? Well, 10 times faster.

That is why it is obviously easier to get someone’s attention by yelling than it is to do a gesture.

The eye on the other hand is the most active among the body’s muscles as it moves a hundred thousand times in a single day.

13. Your body has enough acid to dissolve a razor blade and more chemicals

In just the stomach alone, a razor blade can dissolve in the acid present.

The sulphur in your body can finish off all the fleas on a dog.

About nine hundred pencils can be made from the carbon present in the body.

There is also enough fat to to make seven bars of soap. The fat part might be a little scary for some but it is a fact.

14. The feet contain 52 bones

Realize, this is approximately a quarter of all the bones contained in your entire body. This should not actually be a surprise seeing the amount of work the feet do . They literally support your entire body throughout the day.

In addition to the number of bones, they also contain thirty three joints, nineteen different muscles and more than a hundred ligaments.

15. When you wake up, you are actually taller than you were before you slept

 Are you sure about that?

You may ask, because you probably never note the difference in your height.

Well it is not much of a difference but if it counts, then you will be glad to note that you wake up a centimeter taller, so maybe another reason not to underestimate the power of a good night sleep.

There will always be more to learn about the human body and knowledge of this is power because it could, to a great extent, shape how we look after ourselves and generally all our activities.
Understanding such facts should be interesting.

Fifteen is just a small number compared to how much more there is to human beings but certainly a good number to start with in learning.

The Surprising Connection Between Melanin and Hearing

Did you know that white cats are a lot more likely to be deaf? Did you know the odds of the cat being deaf were dramatically exacerbated by having either one or two blue eyes? It’s true: 20% of green-eyed white cats are deaf, 40% of white cats with one blue eye are deaf, and about 75% of blue-eyed white cats are deaf. It doesn’t stop there, as white dogs are also likelier to be deaf, as are white ferrets. Albino animals, too, seem to be disproportionately deaf.
Melanin and Hearing: white cat with heterochromia deaf
But what does hair or eye color have to do with hearing loss? And can such a connection between hair, skin and eye color be drawn in humans, as well? Looking at medical literature, it certainly seems so.
One particularly well-known congenital disorder that some scientists believe may explain hearing loss in animals is called Waardenburg syndrome, and it affects humans as well. People born with Waardenburg tend to have brilliant blue, wide-set eyes, pale blotches on the skin that may appear like vitiligo, and varying degrees of deafness.
Melanin and Hearing: Waardenburg syndrome
Patient with Waardenburg syndrome, displaying broad nose bridge and wide-set eyes
To assume that Waardenburg is the cause for congenital propensity to deafness would mean that all of the aforementioned animals also have this syndrome and that this syndrome explains everything there is to know about the relationship between color and deafness. But this theory doesn’t quite hold up when put to the test.
Several epidemiological studies into the association of paler skin and hearing loss have come up with some shocking results: black people are roughly 50% less likely to develop hearing loss when compared to white counterparts. Studies specifically targeting whites and blacks whose occupation incorporated increased hazard of hearing loss found much the same thing: whites were more susceptible to hearing loss. Well, considering Waardenburg syndrome affects a mere fraction of society and people of various races, it can’t very well explain this disparity, can it?
But it doesn’t end here. Remember how paler eyes predicted higher chances of deafness among white cats? A 2001 study looking at 130 deaf patients found that the same was true of humans. Of the entire study population, 32 patients had acquired deafness as a result of meningitis and the rest had become deaf due to various other reasons. Among the general deaf population, 73% had pale eyes, compared to 27% with dark eyes, while among the meningitis group, the results were even more dramatic, as 94% of the deaf patients had pale eyes, compared to only 6% with dark eyes.
How about hair color? Does that also figure into risks of hearing loss? According to a 2012 study of military personnel who were exposed to sounds of gunfire, soldiers with blond or light brown hair were significantly more vulnerable to hearing loss compared to fellow combatants with dark hair.
The common thread between paler skin tone, lighter hair color, and green and blue irises is melanin, or more accurately, the lack of it. Melanin is the pigment that is responsible for the color of our skin, our hair, and our eyes, and it is produced in specialized cells called melanocytes. Typically speaking, melanocytes are dispersed equally throughout the body, but some unique conditions (such as Waardenburg) may cause particular areas of the skin or the eyes to have an abnormally low level of melanocytes, causing a striking difference between that area and the rest of the body (nonwhites with blue eyes, for example). But what does all of this have to do with deafness?
Well, we don’t rightly know. We know that all of the color variations presented here are also associated with lack of melanocytes in the inner ear, and can thus surmise that the melanocytes within the ear have an important role in hearing, but we do not know what it is. In the meanwhile, until we manage to figure out the exact mechanism that connects paler complexion to hearing loss, knowing whether you (or ones you hold dear) are in the risk group or not may be able to aid you in avoiding situations that may put your hearing in danger.

Listening to yoga music can be therapeutic

Listening to music does give us pleasure, and a new study has discovered that hearing yoga music during bedtime is good for the heart's health. Previous researches have shown that music can reduce anxiety in patients with heart disease. However, studies on the effects of music on the heart in patients and healthy individuals have produced inconsistent results; partly they did not state what style of music was used.

"We use music therapy in our hospital and in this study we showed that yoga music has a beneficial impact on heart rate variability before sleeping," said the study author.

The body's heart rate changes as a normal response to being in "fight or flight" or "rest and digest" mode. These states are regulated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, respectively, and together comprise the autonomic nervous system.

High heart rate variability shows that the heart is able to adapt to these changes. Conversely, low heart rate variability indicates a less adaptive autonomic nervous system. Low heart rate variability is associated with a 32-45 per cent higher risk of a first cardiovascular event. Following a cardiovascular event, people with low heart rate variability have a raised risk of subsequent events and death.

This study investigated the impact of listening to yoga music, which is a type of soothing or meditative music, before bedtime on heart rate variability. For this, researchers incorporated 149 healthy people with an average age of 26 who participated in three sessions on separate nights: Yoga music before sleep at night; pop music with steady beats before sleep at night; and no music or silence before sleep at night.

At each session, heart rate variability was measured for five minutes before the music or silence started, for ten minutes during the music/silence, and five minutes after it had stopped. In addition, anxiety levels were assessed before and after each session using the Goldberg Anxiety Scale. The level of positive feeling was subjectively measured after each session using a visual analogue scale.

Researchers found that heart rate variability increased during yoga music, decreased during pop music, and did not significantly change during the silence. Anxiety levels fell significantly after the yoga music, rose significantly post the pop music, and increased after the no music session. Participants felt significantly more positive after yoga music than they did after pop music. "Science may have not always agreed, but Indians have long believed in the power of various therapies other than medicines as a mode of treatment for ailments," noted the Dr.

New goggles that help in diagnosing vertigo

Researchers have developed new goggles that may help diagnose the type of vertigo a person has by measuring eye movements during an episode of the sensation.

According to the study, vertigo is a form of severe dizziness that can result in a loss of balance, a feeling of falling, trouble walking or standing, or nausea. There is more than one type of vertigo, each with a different cause, and sometimes requiring different treatment.

"Vertigo can be a disabling condition, so an accurate diagnosis is important to effectively treat and stop vertigo as soon as possible. Observing a person's eye movements during an episode can help make the diagnosis, but people don't always have an episode when they are at the doctor's office," said  the study's author.

For the study, researchers gave participants a pair of video-oculography goggles that record uncontrolled eye movements that accompany vertigo.

The study involved 117 people who had been previously diagnosed with one of three conditions that cause vertigo. Of the group, 43 people had Meniere's disease, an inner ear disorder that can affect hearing and balance, 67 hVertigoad vestibular migraine that can cause vertigo but may not cause a headache, and seven had benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, one of the most common causes of vertigo, where a person's head movements trigger the episodes.

Researchers taught each participant how to use the goggles to record video of their eye movements at home whenever they had a vertigo episode. Eye movements that accompany vertigo are repetitive and uncontrolled, and the eyes can move side to side, up and down or around in circles.

For the majority of people with Meniere's disease (a type of vertigo) which had fast horizontal eye movements, the goggles were able to diagnose their vertigo type accurately.

"While further studies are needed in larger groups, providing people with a pair of goggles that they can easily use at home to record eye movement that has the potential to help with vertigo diagnosis not only by a neurologist in a clinic but also by physicians in an emergency room and physicians diagnosing patients remotely as well," concluded the author.

Scientists Just Discovered This Super Easy Trick to Improve Your Memory

Crossword puzzles and exercise are just a few of  the habits that improve memory best. But to really give your brain a boost, you might want to take a simple tip to heart—and it’s nothing you learned in school.

Researchers  have uncovered what may be the easiest way to improve your memory ever. Their research, recently published in a journal , suggests that reading out loud yourself can increase your recall skills by up to 15 percent.

In the study, scientists asked 95 participants to test four methods for learning written information: reading silently, hearing someone else read, reading aloud, and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Their results? Participants who read the information out loud showed the best retention rates—a five to 15 percent boost in learning speed, in fact.

“Say the information that you want to remember out loud and you’ll have a higher likelihood of remembering it. Yes, it’s that simple!” psychologist and study co-author said.

The combined effect of speaking and hearing oneself talk is the key to giving your memory a boost, scientists say. Called “the production effect,” reading out loud allows our brains to save that information in our long-term memories.

Granted, learning five percent more information might not sound like a huge improvement at first, and the study was small. But compared to a pricey gym membership or stacks of crossword puzzles, it’s incredibly simple (and cheap!) to just open your mouth and talk. Don’t you think?

So the next time you’re prepping for a big exam or cramming for an important office presentation, spend some time yakking it up. Trust us, it might make you a genius.
