Listening to music while driving reduces cardiac stress

If you take too much stress while driving here's the news for you. Stress during driving is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. A new study by Brazilian researchers suggests that cardiac overload due to the stress of driving in heavy traffic can be attenuated by listening to instrumental music. The results of the study were published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine. Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil, Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom and the University of Parma in Italy also took part in this study.
"We found that cardiac stress in the participants in our experiment was reduced by listening to music while they were driving," Vitor Engracia Valenti, a professor at UNESP Marilia and a principal investigator of the project, told.

Research methodology

The researchers analyzed the effects of music on cardiac stress in five women between the ages of 18 and 23. All subjects were healthy, considered nonhabitual drivers (they drove once or twice a week), and had obtained a license 1-7 years previously.

"We opted to assess women who were not habitual drivers because people who drive frequently and have had a license for a long time are better adapted to stressful situations in traffic," Valenti explained.

The volunteers were assessed on two days, in different situations and in random order. On one day, they drove for 20 minutes at rush hour (5:30-6:30 pm) along a 3 km route in a busy district of Marilia, a medium-sized city in the northwest of Sao Paulo State, without listening to music.

On the other day, the volunteers drove the same route at the same time of day but listened to instrumental music on a CD player coupled to the car radio. The use of earbuds or headphones while driving is a traffic offense.

"To increase the degree of traffic stress, we asked them to drive a car they did not own. Driving their own car might help," Valenti said.

What were the results?

The level of cardiac stress was estimated by measuring heart rate variability using a heart rate monitor attached to the participant's chest. Defined as fluctuations in the intervals between consecutive heartbeats, heart rate variability is influenced by the autonomic nervous system. The more active the sympathetic nervous system, the faster the heartbeats, while the parasympathetic nervous system tends to slow it down.
"Elevated sympathetic nervous system activity reduces heart rate variability, whereas more intense parasympathetic nervous system activity increases it," Valenti said.
Conversely, heart rate variability increased in the drivers who listened to music, indicating a higher level of parasympathetic nervous system activity and a reduction in sympathetic nervous system activity.
"Listening to music could be such a preventive measure in favor of cardiovascular health in situations of intense stress such as driving during rush hour," he said.

Listening to yoga music can be therapeutic

Listening to music does give us pleasure, and a new study has discovered that hearing yoga music during bedtime is good for the heart's health. Previous researches have shown that music can reduce anxiety in patients with heart disease. However, studies on the effects of music on the heart in patients and healthy individuals have produced inconsistent results; partly they did not state what style of music was used.

"We use music therapy in our hospital and in this study we showed that yoga music has a beneficial impact on heart rate variability before sleeping," said the study author.

The body's heart rate changes as a normal response to being in "fight or flight" or "rest and digest" mode. These states are regulated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, respectively, and together comprise the autonomic nervous system.

High heart rate variability shows that the heart is able to adapt to these changes. Conversely, low heart rate variability indicates a less adaptive autonomic nervous system. Low heart rate variability is associated with a 32-45 per cent higher risk of a first cardiovascular event. Following a cardiovascular event, people with low heart rate variability have a raised risk of subsequent events and death.

This study investigated the impact of listening to yoga music, which is a type of soothing or meditative music, before bedtime on heart rate variability. For this, researchers incorporated 149 healthy people with an average age of 26 who participated in three sessions on separate nights: Yoga music before sleep at night; pop music with steady beats before sleep at night; and no music or silence before sleep at night.

At each session, heart rate variability was measured for five minutes before the music or silence started, for ten minutes during the music/silence, and five minutes after it had stopped. In addition, anxiety levels were assessed before and after each session using the Goldberg Anxiety Scale. The level of positive feeling was subjectively measured after each session using a visual analogue scale.

Researchers found that heart rate variability increased during yoga music, decreased during pop music, and did not significantly change during the silence. Anxiety levels fell significantly after the yoga music, rose significantly post the pop music, and increased after the no music session. Participants felt significantly more positive after yoga music than they did after pop music. "Science may have not always agreed, but Indians have long believed in the power of various therapies other than medicines as a mode of treatment for ailments," noted the Dr.

Simple Ways To Recharge Yourself

Today when you see around people are always in a hurry, either to catch a train/ bus in the morning. Children are too busy with studies, homework , they're stressed due to pressure from parents to get better marks. With more inventions, instead of having more free time, we're  actually finding ourselves lacking time to do even some essential chores ! Relaxation is essential for every human being as it helps recharge your mind and reduce stress which often hampers your productivity and creativity. Relaxation is essential for both the body and the mind. To relax, one need not find anything expensive or need to travel around. There are quite a few simple things which can help you to relax.

1) Try doing something routine. As one is used to the same rhythm, one finds peace and feels relaxed. Like for e.g., you're used to having your morning coffee while reading the newspaper headlines, do it, while you enjoy your coffee. It gives you some " me" time, which we all need.

2) Hug your partner, your kids. While we hug someone, we make them feel loved and wanted. When you give a warm and tight hug to someone, we make them and us feel wanted, we trust each other. This process releases a hormone called oxytocin which helps to strengthen a bond between two people. According to research, hugging helps bring down blood pressure, anxiety and stress- only if it is someone who is significant to you.

3) At times, we all need to sit alone by ourselves, wanting to shut our eyes while listening to our favourite music. We want to be away from all noise and the humdrum around. When our mind is calm, when we're not bothered about what to do next but enjoying the soothing music, it relaxes our body and mind.

4) Pets shower so much love on us, make us feel wanted. Pets wait for you to return home from work/ school, the love they shower after your hard day, makes you forget everything. Playing with pets, petting them is such a wonderful thing, as it is true love between the two.

5) Exercise is not just good for the body but also relaxes the mind. It helps us to lose weight. Exercise  causes elevation in blood pressure and heart rate, but it also increases the adrenergic (cells which govern neurotransmitter responses) responses in your body. It energizes our body and helps relax our body in turn. Cardio-vascular exercises like jogging or running help clear your mind. If you can jog or walk along a mountain trail, it will surely energise you as you are breathing in fresh air and there is so much peace all around.
