Understanding and Managing Colic Effectively

You have just brought your new born baby home and you can’t stop admiring the tiny human being that you have given birth to. But just then your baby lets out a shrill ear shattering wail and whatever you do just does not seem to comfort your little one. His clenched fists and red face makes you wonder what you did wrong. Your baby may just be showing the signs of a condition called colic.

Colic in babies basically refers to an otherwise healthy baby crying inconsolably for long stretches of time. Symptoms of colic may include frequent spitting up, poor eating and irritability during and after feeds.

While the exact cause of colic is still unknown, some theories include:

The immature digestive system of an infant makes it more susceptible to some of the substances in breast or formula milk.

In the case of breastfed babies, colic may be a reaction to specific foods in the mother’s diet.
Excessive air in the baby’s gastrointestinal tract

Some studies also indicate a imbalance in the gut micro-organisms to be a probable cause of colic. It has been seen that babies with colic had lower counts of good bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacilli as compared to healthy babies.

Addressing colic in infants is not only important for the babies overall health in both short and long term but also to reduce its adverse effects on maternal mental health and the family quality of life.

Tips to Improve Digestion in Infants

A baby is born with an immature gut which may lead to digestive discomfort in otherwise healthy infants. The initial days of an infant are crucial for the development of a healthy and well-functioning digestive tract. A healthy gut microbiota contains a balance of many classes of bacteria that have health promoting functions. An imbalance in gut flora has been found to be associated with asthma and allergy, infantile colic and gastrointestinal disorders, infections, inflammatory bowel disorders and obesity.

Studies indicate that external stimuli such as nutrition and environment play an important role in the development of the infants gastrointestinal (GI) system. As colic is a problem associated with the baby’s gut and that a low amount of good bacteria could be a probable cause for development of colic in the baby, it would be beneficial if ways to increase the count of these beneficial micro-organisms are looked at. As is widely known, human breast milk is the best form of nutrition for infants. It contains two important factors that helps shape the baby’s gut micro-organism in terms of diversity and stability. It acts as an important source of beneficial bacteria and contributes to the establishment of a well-balanced gut flora in a baby. With this, it is also a rich source of oligosaccharides, the third largest component of breast milk after carbohydrates and fat .These oligosaccharides have a prebiotic effect on infant gut health, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria like bifidobacteria and lactobacilli which may help in reduction of colic in babies.

Prebiotics are basically non digestible carbohydrates that travel to the colon intact and have the ability to selectively stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the colon.

Some other Benefits of Prebiotics are:

    Decreases incidence of falling sick.
    Promotes softer stools.
Reduces incidence of allergic symptoms like skin allergies.

With little or no role of medication for colic, studies indicate that use of certain probiotic strains, prebiotic oligosaccharides in babies along with a low allergen diet (no consumption of milk and dairy products, etc.) by the mothers in case she is breast feeding may bring relief from colic for the baby. Calming measures like soothing motions, more frequent burping during feeds, offering pacifiers, swaddling, limiting stimulation, carrying baby around in a carrier, massaging the baby’s back or belly, cuddling or holding the baby close and playing music can help soothe the baby.

It is always advisable to check with your health care professional regarding the requirement of any dietary changes for a breastfeeding mother and also rule out any underlying medical condition that is triggering the crying. Also, in cases where breast feeding is not possible, check with your doctor to know alternate ways to manage colic in babies.

One such remedy for diabetes which can control diabetes and reduce blood sugar levels is mango leaf. Mango leaves are loaded with properties that can help you manage diabetes. They can contribute to a drop in blood sugar levels. Various studies have also highlighted the benefits of mango leaves in managing diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. However, more research is needed to testify how far they are beneficial.

Mango leaves for diabetes

''Mango leaf extract (Mangiferin) has the ability to inhibit the enzyme alpha glucosidase, which helps reduce carbohydrate metabolism in intestine, and hence blood glucose levels. More research is needed to find out the exact dosage of the leaf extract,'' says a Dr.

Mango leaves have the capability to improve insulin production and distribution of glucose. They can help in stabilising blood sugar levels. Mango leaves are also loaded with pectin, vitamin C and fibre. Together they are beneficial for both diabetes and cholesterol.

How to use mango leaves to lower blood sugar levels?

You need to follow a very simple method to use mango leaves for diabetes. All you need to do is take 10-15 mango leaves and boil them in water properly. After boiling the leaves properly, leave them overnight. Strain the water and drink it as the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Getting measles 'resets' the body's immune system

Measles, the contagious childhood disease that is once more on the rise globally, is more harmful than previously thought.

A new analysis of 77 un-vaccinated children from the Netherlands carried out by an international team of researchers led by scientists at Harvard has found that the virus erases the body's memory of previous pathogens effectively wiping its immunity memory.

The virus eliminated between 11 and 73 percent of the children's protective antibodies, blood proteins responsible for "remembering" previous encounters with disease, the team wrote in the journal Science on Thursday.

This left some of the children with immunity close to that of a newborn baby.

"It sort of resets your immune system back to sort of a more naive state," the epidemiologist and coauthor told.

In order to rebuild their defenses, they will need to be exposed to numerous pathogens as they were in their infancy, he added.

To validate their result, the team then carried out experiments on macaque monkeys, with the animals losing 40-60 percent of their protective antibodies.

"The virus is much more deleterious than we realized, which means the vaccine is that much more valuable," said study coauthor.

New treatment option for heart failure found

Higher doses of spironolactone, a diuretic (water pill), can prevent the need for dialysis in selected heart failure patients, found a recent study.

The aggressive approach relieved fluid overload safely and effectively in patients who were not responding to conventional diuretics.

Kidney and cardiovascular specialists conducted a pilot study in 19 patients to show that the higher doses of spironolactone, which prevented reabsorption of excess salt in the kidneys and maintained potassium levels, could be used safely in these very-ill patients, who were admitted to the hospital with heart failure exacerbation and don’t respond to conventional diuretics.

Spironolactone is usually given to these types of patients in doses of 25-50 milligrams. In the study published, the dose was increased to 100 and, at some administrations, even 200 milligrams.

“Heart failure patients come into our care with excessive fluid (salt plus water) on their body, making them short of breath, unable to walk and unable to lie flat. They are miserable because of shortness of breath and distension in their abdomen and legs,” said  one of the researchers of the study.

Generally, the treatment is a low-salt diet and diuretics. Furosemide (brand name Lasix) is one of the frequently used medications. When patients are admitted to the hospital, they are monitored on this regimen and usually improve.

But about 15 per cent to 20 per cent of patients do not get better,  the Dr. said. They continue to have a fluid overload.

“The reason is they get resistant to the commonly used loop diuretics, and a very high aldosterone level is one of the main reasons for this resistance,” she said.

Kidneys are made up of millions of tiny tubules called nephrons. Nephrons consist of four main segments, including a part, called the loop of Henle, where 20 per cent to 25 per cent of salt reabsorption happens. Loop diuretics target this section.

Spironolactone inhibits the action of aldosterone, a hormone that makes the kidney excrete too much potassium and retain salt in the distal segment, another part of nephrons.

Study participants who didn’t respond to standard therapy were given high-dose spironolactone and monitored for urine output and breathing. “Most of them had a dramatic increase in their urine output and significant improvement in their shortness of breath. We think some patients could avoid needing dialysis if treated in this manner” the Dr. said.

: The BEST bread for diabetics to lower high blood sugar and lose weight naturally

If you’ve been recently diagnosed or living with diabetes, you may have been told that bread should be completely ‘off-limits’. But that may not be the case, the fact is that most people with type 2 diabetes can eat bread unless their doctors advise otherwise. Moreover, there are plenty of healthy choices that can be actually beneficial for diabetics in managing blood sugar levels and body weight.
They key is to choose the right type of bread considering the carb content in it. According to Diabetes UK, bread falls into the starchy carbohydrate category - all carbs can affect blood sugar levels. This means carbs can raise blood glucose and have an impact on diabetes control. This happens due to the fact that during digestion, carbs are broken down into blood sugar, which is used by the cells of the body as the main source of energy. Foods made with refined grains such as white bread are high on the glycemic index (GI) compared to wholegrain foods. The GI measures the ability of carbs to raise the level of blood sugar - the higher the GI, the quicker a food will raise blood sugar levels.

What’s the best bread for type 2 diabetes to prevent high blood sugar and prevent gaining weight and belly fat?

For diabetics, wholegrain breads are considered the best option due to their high fibre content, particularly insoluble fibre - a complex carb which cannot be digested by the body, unlike other carbs. Wholegrain breads such as whole wheat, rye, and organic whole grain varieties are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals that are good for your health. Fibre-enriched wholegrain breads can help control blood sugar, keep bowels regular and promote feelings of fullness. Foods high in fibre can help you lose weight and fight belly fat effectively. In fact, one review of 16 studies found that people who eat three daily servings of wholegrains may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 32 per cent.

However, eating a diet rich in refined starches, such as white bread, is linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, weight gain and heart disease.

Takeaway

Eating a high-fibre diet can help manage diabetes, lose weight and improve overall health. However, it’s important to be mindful of portion sizes as all carbs can still affect blood glucose levels in some way.
