Myths About Boosting Your Immune System To Take Note Of

The world is currently grappling with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. All of us are trying to stay safe and are finding ways to protect ourselves from this deadly virus. Focusing on improving our immune system is being touted as one of the best ways to safeguard our body against the attack of the novel coronavirus at present. This has expectedly led to a sudden surge in people trying out different ways to boost their immunity.

While being healthy and developing good immunity will certainly be helpful in these circumstances, there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the immune system that needs to be countered. Here, we separate fact from fiction and bring out some of the most prominent myths about the immune system you shouldn’t fall prey to.


Myth 1. Eating garlic will help protect you from a viral infection

Garlic is good for your health, undoubtedly. It is highly nutritious and is known to improve cholesterol levels. However, there is a long-standing myth associated with this food as well - that eating garlic will prevent viral infection in our bodies. That is untrue, though.

"There are a few lab studies that show that garlic extract can partially inhibit the replication of the virus in cells," says Gary Linkov, MD. That being said, there is hardly any comprehensive proof to suggest that garlic will prevent viral infections, and certainly not something as potent as the novel coronavirus. Until we get more evidence from studies, we must not depend on garlic to save us from any viral infection. In fact, the World Health Organization has clearly stated on its website that "there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus."


Myth 2. The immune system is centralized in your upper body
Getting a cough, runny nose, or headache are some of the first symptoms we associate with coming down with the flu. It is because of this notion that we have generally assumed that our immune system is primarily centralized in our upper body. The truth, however, is that a lot of our bodily organs and mechanisms are involved in making the immune system - from the bone marrow to our bowels. In fact, there are multiple systems that are integral to the immune system. That is the reason the gut and microbiome are important, along with the lymphatic system to properly develop a robust immune system.
 

Myth 3. Eating sugar won’t affect your immune system
Eating or drinking too much sugar inhibits the immune system cells that attack bacteria. The effect of a sugary drink, in fact, lasts for a couple of hours. For instance, a 12-ounce (354.8 ml) soda will suppress your immunity by 30 percent for at least 3 hours. The suppression of the immune system starts about 30 minutes after you have consumed sugar and can last up to 5 hours.

“What we do know is that diabetes appears to be common in people confirmed to have COVID-19,” notes Nate Favini, medical lead at Forward. “This suggests that having higher levels of sugars in your blood could make it easier to contract COVID-19.” Thus, if sugar is a big part of your diet, it can be weakening your immune system right now. In these times, especially, when most of us are quarantined at home, it is easy to eat that extra candy or cake as a night-time snack. The wise thing to do would be to limit your sugar intake as much as possible right now.


Myth 4. Supplements will help keep your immune system safe

Supplements have become quite popular these days. Many people depend on a variety of supplements to help them ward off colds and the flu. There are certain supplements like elderberry, astragalus, and Echinacea that are believed to boost your immune system. But a lot of experts do not agree.

"Unfortunately, the reality is that those kinds of products aren't really offering you any benefit," says Michael Starnbach, a professor of microbiology at Harvard Medical School. "There's no evidence that they help in fighting disease." Likewise, no evidence suggests that Vitamin C supplements can help prevent COVID-19, say some noted health experts.

Supplemented vitamins are usually quite an overkill according to experts. This is because our bodies are unable to absorb more than a few hundred micrograms per day. Thus, it is vital to understand that there is no one pill that can boost your immune system. The best thing to do is to talk to your physician and see what they recommend according to your needs.


Myth 5. Lack of sleep won’t affect your immune system
There are many of us who don’t sleep well. Lack of sleep, though, has been linked to several mental and physical health problems. This includes issues arising from an impaired immune system. Our immune system is made up of several types of cells and proteins that help in keeping colds or the flu at bay. Not many would know this, but sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body. Thus, when we don’t get proper sleep, our immunity is adversely affected.

“A lot of studies show our T-cells go down if we are sleep deprived,” says Diwakar Balachandran, MD, director of the Sleep Center at the University of Texas. “And inflammatory cytokines go up. This could potentially lead to a greater risk of developing a cold or flu.”

In simpler words, lack of sleep suppresses the functioning of the immune system. It also decreases your body's production of cytokines (a large group of proteins that mediate and regulate immunity) which can make you more susceptible to illness.
 

Myth 6. Over-exercising can boost your immune system

Exercise is good for our body, of course. But will over-exercising help in building our immunity? Experts say that working out vigorously, especially if you are not feeling well, can actually increase your risk of infection by 3-6 times. On the other hand, moderate activity like walking for 20-40 minutes will help you reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections by as much as 50 percent. Thus, if you are not feeling in the best of health, don’t overexert yourself. Rather, try a lighter workout to be on the safer side.


Myth 7. Antibacterial foods can help your immune system

When we fall sick, there are plenty of natural antibacterial food items that are recommended to us. Honey, turmeric, coconut oil, and chicken soup, along with a few others, are some of the common food items that we tend to try when we are down with fever. We have been made to believe that these foods can help your immune system combat infections. While it is true that some food items that are rich in Vitamin C can help your overall health, it would be unwise to depend on any food blindly for enhancing your body's immunity.

"Research is still ongoing on the topic, but there is no evidence of the actual immune-boosting effect from these (antibacterial) foods," says Dimitar Marinov, MD.

So while there is no harm in having your antibacterial foods regularly, don’t expect them to work wonders on your immunity.


Myth 8. Stress doesn’t have any effect on your immunity system

Stress has become a normal part of our day-to-day life. So much so, that we often don’t stop and think how much harm it can cause our body, including our immune system. Ongoing stress can make you susceptible to illness and disease. This is because the brain sends defense signals to the endocrine system, which goes on to releases a series of hormones that gravely suppress our immunity.

Many experts have observed that stress is responsible for almost 90 percent of all illnesses and diseases. Excessive stress triggers chemical reactions in our body and floods it with cortisol that is known to be the chief reason behind anxiety, high blood pressure, stroke and the fight-or-flight response (also called hyperarousal, or the acute stress response). Stress also decreases the body's white blood cells and thus puts us at more risks for viruses.

Drug to replace chemotherapy may reshape cancer care

A class of drugs is emerging that can attack cancer cells in the body without damaging surrounding healthy ones. They have the potential to replace chemotherapy and its disruptive side effects, reshaping the future of cancer care.

The complex biological medicines, called antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), have been in development for decades, and are now generating renewed excitement because of the success of one ADC in late-stage testing, a breast cancer treatment called DS-8201.

The fervor over ADCs is such that AstraZeneca Plc in March agreed to pay as much as $6.9 billion to jointly develop DS-8201 with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co., the British drugmaker’s biggest deal in more than a decade. The investment was widely seen to be a validation of DS-8201’s potential — and the ADC class of drugs as a whole — as an alternative for chemotherapy, the most widely used treatment, for some types of cancer.

DS-8201, which will be filed for U.S. approval by the end of September, is so well-regarded that some analysts already predict it will surpass the $7 billion in annual sales for Roche Holding AG’s breast cancer drug Herceptin, which it aims to replace.

“DS-8201 may become one of the largest cancer biologic drugs,’’ said Caroline Stewart, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence who estimates sales of the drug to eventually approach $12 billion globally. That’s a level that has been attained by only a handful of biologic drugs, which are produced from extracts of other living organisms.

Analysts say DS-8201 could triple the number of patients who get powerful targeted treatment for breast cancer, the most common tumor in women that kills more than half a million annually. As importantly, its ability to target cancer cells without affecting normal cells is a key advantage over the take-no-prisoners approach of chemotherapy.

Daiichi’s treatment has been seen to double survival time for advanced breast cancer patients to 20 months from 10, former UBS Securities Japan Co. analyst Atsushi Seki said in March. In trials, patients using DS-8201 experienced less nausea and hair loss compared with chemotherapy.

Magic bullet

DS-8201’s full potential is still years away, as it will take time for data to validate the drug’s efficacy in a wide range of patients. Still, the potential of ADCs is already jolting Big Pharma. Roche, whose Herceptin loses patent exclusivity in the U.S. this year, has added ADCs to its portfolio with its Kadcyla breast cancer treatment. Pfizer Inc. has Mylotarg, an ADC that treats myeloid leukemia.

About 56 pharmaceutical companies are developing ADC candidates, including ImmunoGen Inc. and Seattle Genetics Inc., and they could be targets for acquisitions or licensing deals from global pharmaceuticals anxious for a piece of the ADC pie, according to Cowen Inc.

“ADCs are being positioned as a chemo replacement,’’ Cowen analysts including Boris Peaker wrote in an April note. “There is significant potential for partnership activity.’’

The global ADC market was valued at $1.57 billion in 2017 and is projected to grow 26% every year through 2025 to almost $10 billion, according to a report by Grand View Research.

The concept behind ADCs was envisioned in 1900 by German Nobel laureate Paul Ehrlich, who formed the idea of a “magic bullet” in which a single toxic molecule would be delivered to attack a diseased cell without damaging surrounding healthy cells.

The actual use of ADCs began in 2000, but the interest in the sector cooled down as many failed to live up to expectations. The therapies belong to a broader category of cancer immunotherapies that include Merck & Co.’s Keytruda and Novartis AG’s CAR T-cell therapy Kymriah that harness the immune system to kill tumors.

Another level

Daiichi Sankyo’s drug takes ADCs to another level. Its advantage is that it carries eight payloads stably to cancer cells, double the number of the industry standard, said Toshinori Agatsuma, head of oncology research at Daiichi Sankyo who led a team that discovered the therapy.

“Currently available ADCs are far from being perfect technically because the payload linked to antibodies aren’t properly delivered to cancer cells,’’ said Agatsuma. “We wanted to challenge and improve that. We were a latecomer in biotech, but I knew it was an area where we could catch up, compete and win.’’

About 2.1 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to the World Health Organization. Some 18% of cases are driven by a protein called HER2, and their first treatment is chemotherapy alongside Roche’s Herceptin and Perjeta, a related drug. While DS-8201 is currently in testing for later-stage cancer, the plan is to go up against the first-line treatment in the next two years.

“It would be transformative” if the drug were to become the sole first-line treatment, said David Fredrickson, president of AstraZeneca’s oncology business. “If we can eliminate the side effects associated with chemotherapy, that would be a tremendous benefit for women.”

Drugs like Herceptin only target high levels of HER2, and women with lower levels must rely on hormone therapy or chemotherapy. That’s where DS-8201 has the potential to serve far more patients, treating those with both higher and lower levels of HER2.

It’s different’

“We need more evidence, but my gut feeling is that DS-8201 is the most effective among existing medicines targeting HER2 positive patients, including Herceptin and chemotherapy,’’ said Shunji Takahashi, deputy director at the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, who took a part in an early-stage DS-8201 trial. He noted that interstitial pneumonia is a concern as a side effect, and needs to be monitored.

For Daiichi Sankyo, the development of DS-8201 has helped resurrect the Japanese company after it struggled for years to set a path for growth, weighed down by a failed acquisition of India’s Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. and a shortage of blockbuster products.

“A single drug has a potential to transform Daiichi Sankyo and I didn’t expect it a year ago,’’ SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. analyst Yasuhiro Nakazawa said. “Daiichi Sankyo had a track record of betraying market expectations with previous drug developments. But with this one, I can really feel that it’s different this time.’’

Strenuous exercise does not suppress immune system

Researchers have debunked a nearly four-decade-old myth that strenuous exercise suppresses the immune system. A study, reinterprets scientific findings from the last few decades and emphasises that exercise – instead of dampening immunity – may instead be beneficial for immune health.

In a detailed analysis of research articles that have been published since the 1980s, this new review of the literature has reinterpreted findings, based on fundamental principles of immunology and exercise physiology, to clarify misconceptions and misinterpretations that have formed over the years.

In their study, the authors explain that, for competitors taking part in endurance sports, exercise causes immune cells to change in two ways. Initially, during exercise, the number of some immune cells in the bloodstream can increase dramatically by up to 10 times, especially ‘natural killer cells’ which deal with infections.

After exercise, some cells in the bloodstream decrease substantially – sometimes falling to levels lower than before exercise started, and this can last for several hours.

Many scientists previously interpreted this fall in immune cells after exercise to be immune-suppression. However strong evidence suggests that this does not mean that cells have been ‘lost’ or ‘destroyed’, but rather that they move to other sites in the body that are more likely to become infected, such as the lungs.

Scientists know that these cells are not ‘destroyed’ for three main reasons. First, most evidence shows that cells return to normal levels within several hours, which is far too quick for them be ‘replaced’ with new cells. Second, studies in humans have shown that these cells have the ability to leave the bloodstream and travel to other body sites.

Third, studies with laboratory animals have shown by labelling immune cells, that following exercise, these labelled cells accumulate in the lungs, and other places, because they go there to look for infections.

The authors, therefore, suggest that low numbers of immune cells in the bloodstream in the hours after exercise, far from being a sign of immune-suppression, are in fact a signal that these cells, primed by exercise, are working in other parts of the body.

Dr. from the  Department for Health explained: “It is increasingly clear that changes happening to your immune system after a strenuous bout of exercise do not leave your body immune-suppressed. In fact, evidence now suggests that your immune system is boosted after exercise – for example we know that exercise can improve your immune response to a flu jab.”

Co-author added: “Given the important role exercise has for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and type II diabetes, the findings from our analysis emphasise that people should not be put off exercise for fear that it will dampen their immune system. Clearly, the benefits of exercise, including endurance sports, outweigh any negative effects which people may perceive.”

The authors suggest that although a strenuous exercise bout itself will not increase the likelihood of catching an infection, other factors might.

First, attending any event where there is a large gathering of people, increases your chance of infection. Second, public transport, particularly airline travel over long distances, where sleep is disrupted, may also increase your infection risk. Other factors, like eating an inadequate diet, getting cold and wet, and psychological stress, have all been linked to a greater chance of developing infections.

Marijuana use may not affect fertility

Marijuana use — by either men or women — does not lower a couple’s chances of becoming a parent, finds a study challenging previous theories.

While marijuana is one of the most widely used recreational drugs among individuals of reproductive age, it has also long been promoted as an effective treatment for a range of medical conditions, including epilepsy and chronic pain.

Previous studies have also shown that marijuana use has adverse effects on male fertility as it lowers sperm count and quality, and smoking the weed impacts both egg quality and a woman’s menstrual cycle.

The new study, published in the Journal, demonstrated that there was no link between fecundability — the average per-cycle probability of conception — and marijuana use.

Marijuana has been legalised for recreational purposes in some states .

“Given the increasing number of states legalising recreational marijuana across the nation, we thought it was an opportune time to investigate the association between marijuana use and fertility,” said  the lead author.

While animal studies have indicated that the risk for miscarriage increases if marijuana is used early in pregnancy, some associations have been found between marijuana use during pregnancy and future developmental and hyperactivity disorders in children.

For the study, the team had surveyed 4,194 women aged 21 to 45 living in the US or Canada from 2013 through 2017.

After 12 cycles of follow-up, conception probabilities were found to be similar among couples that used marijuana and those that did not.

However, the questions about the effects of marijuana use still remain, as classifying people correctly according to the amount of marijuana used, especially when relying on self-reported data, is challenging, the researchers said.

“Future studies with day-specific data on marijuana use might better be able to distinguish acute from chronic effects of marijuana use, and evaluate whether effects depend on other factors,” the  author said.
