Walking may help women conceive

If you have a history of pregnancy loss, do not lose hope as a new study suggests that physical activity such as walking may improve the chances of conceiving among women who are overweight or obese.
The study suggested that women reporting more than four hours a week of vigorous activity had significantly higher pregnancy chances compared to no vigorous activity.

"One of our main findings is that there was no overall relationship between most types of physical activity and the likelihood of becoming pregnant for women who had already had one or two pregnancy losses, except for walking...," said co-author,  "... which was associated with higher likelihood of becoming pregnant among women who were overweight or obese," he added.

For the study, researchers recruited 1,214 women between 18 to 40 years old with a history of one or two pregnancy losses.

The researchers found that the association of walking with the ability to become pregnant -- known as fecundability -- varied significantly by body mass index (BMI).

Among overweight or obese women, walking at least 10 minutes at a time was associated with improvement in fecundability, the researcher said.

Moderate activity, sitting and other activity categories were not associated with fecundability overall or in BMI-stratified analyses, they added.

The researchers noted that these findings provide positive evidence for the benefits of physical activity in women attempting pregnancy, especially for walking among those with higher BMI.

Sweet Beverages Daily By Either Partner May Reduce Chances of Pregnancy

Those trying their chances at pregnancy take note. According to a latest study, one or more sugar sweetened beverage everyday by either partner may significantly bring down the couple's chances of pregnancy. "We found positive associations between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and lower fertility, which were consistent after controlling for many other factors, including obesity, caffeine intake, alcohol, smoking, and overall diet quality," said a researcher.

"Couples planning a pregnancy might consider limiting their consumption of these beverages, especially because they are also related to other adverse health effects," said the lead author of the study.

The researchers said that, identifying these modifiable risk factors early may provide couples a better chance at conception. A certain dietary tweaks may go a long way in helping couples to conceive and reduce the psychological stress and financial hardship related to fertility treatments.

Researchers surveyed 3,828 women and 1,045 of their male partners, for this Study.

For the analysis, participants completed a comprehensive baseline survey on medical history, lifestyle factors, and diet, including their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages. Post this, female participants were made to answer a follow-up questionnaire every two months for up to 12 months or until pregnancy occurred.

The findings revealed that both female and male intake of sugar-sweetened beverages were associated with 20 per cent reduced fecundability, the average monthly probability of conception.
Researchers also stated that females who were consuming at least one soda per day had 25 per cent lower fecundability; male consumption was associated with 33 per cent lower fecundability.

Not just this. Intake of energy drinks have also been linked larger reductions in fertility .However it must be noted that that the findings were based on small numbers of consumers, hence concrete conclusions cannot be drawn as far as the link between sugary drinks and infertility is concerned.

"Given the high levels of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed by reproductive-aged couples in North America, these findings could have important public health implications," researchers said.

Marijuana use may not affect fertility

Marijuana use — by either men or women — does not lower a couple’s chances of becoming a parent, finds a study challenging previous theories.

While marijuana is one of the most widely used recreational drugs among individuals of reproductive age, it has also long been promoted as an effective treatment for a range of medical conditions, including epilepsy and chronic pain.

Previous studies have also shown that marijuana use has adverse effects on male fertility as it lowers sperm count and quality, and smoking the weed impacts both egg quality and a woman’s menstrual cycle.

The new study, published in the Journal, demonstrated that there was no link between fecundability — the average per-cycle probability of conception — and marijuana use.

Marijuana has been legalised for recreational purposes in some states .

“Given the increasing number of states legalising recreational marijuana across the nation, we thought it was an opportune time to investigate the association between marijuana use and fertility,” said  the lead author.

While animal studies have indicated that the risk for miscarriage increases if marijuana is used early in pregnancy, some associations have been found between marijuana use during pregnancy and future developmental and hyperactivity disorders in children.

For the study, the team had surveyed 4,194 women aged 21 to 45 living in the US or Canada from 2013 through 2017.

After 12 cycles of follow-up, conception probabilities were found to be similar among couples that used marijuana and those that did not.

However, the questions about the effects of marijuana use still remain, as classifying people correctly according to the amount of marijuana used, especially when relying on self-reported data, is challenging, the researchers said.

“Future studies with day-specific data on marijuana use might better be able to distinguish acute from chronic effects of marijuana use, and evaluate whether effects depend on other factors,” the  author said.
