6 Myths About Conception Debunked

A lot of thought goes into having a child, and once you decide to have one, the right steps must be taken for actual conception to occur. This process is made more difficult by the many myths that are perpetuated by people that don’t understand the reality of it. Here are the six most common myths behind conception:

1. The missionary position helps the sperm to reach the eggs
The reality is that the sex position that you’re in makes no difference to the chances of conception. Sperm can actually get up into the uterus quite quickly if the right mucus is present. This is usually the case in fertile women, and the mucus acts like a superhighway, thus negating the need to be in a certain position. No scientific studies have proven that one sexual position is better than another.
2. Your diet affects the gender of your child
There are many misconceptions associated with this myth, such as eating a diet high in salt tends to result in a boy, or eating a diet high in dairy tends to result in a girl. There’s no research to back this up – the reality is that there are male and female sperm, and it’s simply a question of which one gets to the woman’s egg first.
3. It’s not possible to conceive during menstruation
Although it’s extremely rare to conceive during menstruation, it isn’t entirely impossible either. When women have intercourse towards the end of their period, there’s a small chance that some sperm will survive until menstruation is over. In fact, sperm can survive some five to seven days if the right cervical mucus is present.
4. You’ll get pregnant if you have intercourse every day
Not every woman knows exactly when she’s fertile, so in theory, she’s more likely to get pregnant with each additional time she has intercourse. This is because she’ll be more likely to have intercourse when she’s ovulating. With that being said, it’s useless having intercourse when ovulation isn’t occurring – conception cannot happen. Most women ovulate some two to three weeks after their period is over. Tracking your menstrual cycle is always helpful in this regard.

5. Conception isn’t possible if the man pulls out
Withdrawal as a contraception method is somewhat effective, but 25 out of 100 women will still get pregnant while employing this method over the course of one year. An interesting thing about withdrawal is that some cultures seem to use it more effectively than others. It’s believed that this is so because the method is passed down from one generation to another more effectively. Nevertheless, it’s considered to be a very effective birth control method.
6. Reaching orgasm is a must for conception to occur
A man has to reach orgasm in order for conception to occur, but the same isn’t true for women. This myth is likely to be believed because numerous mammals are only able to conceive when the female orgasms. In addition, various articles in the US have detailed how animals such as rabbits, ferrets, and camels do not ovulate on a cycle like humans do – rather, the female ovulates once stimulated by a male and after they orgasm.
How to help yourself conceive
The best thing to do is learn when your cervical mucus is present. This fluid is clear, slippery and stretchy. You should track the mucus during your menstrual cycle, and talk to your doctor about what you’re seeing. The best way of doing this is to look at the toilet paper after you wipe. If you notice a clear, slippery and/or stretchy mucus, then this is the best time to have intercourse. It’s recommended to do so every other day during the period when the mucus is present, up until two days after it disappears. Ovulation is most likely to occur during this time.

Walking may help women conceive

If you have a history of pregnancy loss, do not lose hope as a new study suggests that physical activity such as walking may improve the chances of conceiving among women who are overweight or obese.
The study suggested that women reporting more than four hours a week of vigorous activity had significantly higher pregnancy chances compared to no vigorous activity.

"One of our main findings is that there was no overall relationship between most types of physical activity and the likelihood of becoming pregnant for women who had already had one or two pregnancy losses, except for walking...," said co-author,  "... which was associated with higher likelihood of becoming pregnant among women who were overweight or obese," he added.

For the study, researchers recruited 1,214 women between 18 to 40 years old with a history of one or two pregnancy losses.

The researchers found that the association of walking with the ability to become pregnant -- known as fecundability -- varied significantly by body mass index (BMI).

Among overweight or obese women, walking at least 10 minutes at a time was associated with improvement in fecundability, the researcher said.

Moderate activity, sitting and other activity categories were not associated with fecundability overall or in BMI-stratified analyses, they added.

The researchers noted that these findings provide positive evidence for the benefits of physical activity in women attempting pregnancy, especially for walking among those with higher BMI.

High heels may look great but likely to have adverse effect on reproductive system

A pair of high heels is a must-have accessory in every young girl's wardrobe. However, there are many health risks associated with these killer heels as well.

According to several studies, if the heel size is over 5 inches, it forces the body to adopt unnatural postures that prevent them from conceiving. Distortion in the posture affects each and every system in the body, including the uterus and the reproductive system.

"Young girls entering puberty, start developing  physiological as well as psychological maturity. But the foot bones, pelvis, and spine are not mature enough and hence under the influence of high heels (external force), tend to bend easily causing deformation," said an IVF expert.

She added,"The tilted posture or the misbalance and misalignment displaces the uterus from its physiological anteverted or retroverted position and thereby causing pain during menstruation, intercourse, and other fertility-related issues."

Due to the fact that the body leans forward on wearing high heels, there is an increased pressure applied to the pelvis, the organs in the pelvic cavity are forced inside to contract. This inevitably leads to narrowing the pelvis inlet.

A Chennai based gynecologist said, "Girls who regularly wear high heels, may be subjected to difficulties in giving birth along with elevated pain and other maternal problems. This often leads to an improper posture and poor alignment of the spine leading to ineffective functioning of the organs leading to the displacement of the uterus as well."

"Uterus displacement causes heavy pain during menstruation or intercourse, issues in fertility and incontinence. The ligament supporting the uterus gets weakened, and hence the chances of uterovaginal prolapse increases," she added.

New hormone that makes ovaries grow discovered

Scientists have identified a new hormone that promotes follicle development and stimulates ovary growth, and could act as a potential 'game-changer' in human fertility treatment. The discovery may help improve effectiveness of current fertility treatments for women and possibly lead to entirely new treatments altogether.

Researchers identified the hormone called "R-spondin2". "The finding of a new ovarian hormone produced by the oocytes capable of stimulating ovarian follicle growth could lead to new infertility treatments," said a researcher.

To make this discovery, researchers analysed all the proteins likely made by the eggs, and discovered a previously unknown hormone, called R-spondin2. The researchers then replicated this new hormone in test tubes and injected it into mice.

The hormone stimulated growth of mouse ovarian cells, leading to the generation of mature eggs, researchers said . These eggs were fertilised and led to successful pregnancies and the delivery of healthy pups.

Then, human ovarian tissue was grafted into mice, and this also grew after treatment with this newly identified ovarian hormone, suggesting that the hormone could work in humans. The researchers speculated that when used in conjunction with the traditional Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), this newly discovered ovarian hormone could lead to new infertility treatment options for those not responding well to FSH treatment alone.
"Infertility can be very frustrating for couples who have been trying to conceive for a very long time. The discovery of this new hormone is a potential game-changer in human fertility treatment," said a researcher. However, he added that further research is needed to determine its efficacy and safety in humans.

Moderate exercise is tied to greater success among women trying to get pregnant, but those who work out vigorously take longer to conceive, an international study has found.
