Dexamethasone approved for use in India for COVID-19

The government in India has authorized the use of the low-cost steroid drug dexamethasone as an alternative to methylprednisolone.

This drug will be used to treat coronavirus patients with moderate and severe symptoms.

Dexamethason ,is a steroid which is used to reduce inflammation in other diseases such as arthritis, also can be used for patients in need of oxygen support and those who have excessive inflammatory response.

It is to be mentioned that Dexamethasone is manufactured by an

Indian company headquartered in Ahmedabad.

Quitting alcohol can improve mental health in women

Quitting alcohol may improve women's mental well-being besides their health-related quality of life. "More evidence suggests caution in recommending moderate drinking as part of a healthy diet," said the Dr.

The study included 10386 people cohort who were nondrinkers or moderate drinkers (14 drinks or less per week for men and 7 drinks or less per week for women) between 2009 and 2013.

The researchers compared their findings with data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a representative survey of 31079 people conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in the United States.

The mean age of participants in the cohort was 49 years and 56 per cent were women. About 64 per cent of men were nondrinkers (abstainers and former drinkers) and almost 88 per cent of women were nondrinkers.

Men and women who were lifetime abstainers had the highest level of mental well-being at the start of the study (baseline). For women who were moderate drinkers and quit drinking, quitting was linked to a favourable change in mental well-being in both Chinese and American study populations.

These results were apparent after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, body mass index, smoking status, and other factors. "Global alcohol consumption is expected to continue to increase unless effective strategies are employed," says the Dr.

"Our findings suggest caution in recommendations that moderate drinking could improve health-related quality of life. Instead, quitting drinking may be associated with a more favourable change in mental well-being, approaching the level of lifetime abstainers," the Dr. said.

Early morning workouts best for weight loss

When trying to lose weight, the timing of exercise plays a key role, recent findings suggest.

In a study of 375 adults who have successfully maintained weight loss and who engage in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity, most reported consistency in the time of day that they exercised, with early morning being the most common time.

The study also found that being consistent in the timing of physical activity was associated with higher physical activity levels, regardless of whether people exercised consistently during the morning, afternoon, or evening.

"Our findings warrant future experimental research to determine whether promoting consistency in the time of day that planned and structured physical activity is performed can help individuals achieve and sustain higher levels of physical activity," said senior author.

Moderate cholesterol intake not associated with risk of stroke

Consuming up to one egg per day or moderately high intake of dietary cholesterol does not increase the risk of stroke, according to a study. Furthermore, no association was found in carriers of the APOE4 phenotype, which affects cholesterol metabolism.

Findings from earlier studies addressing the association of dietary cholesterol or egg intake with the risk of stroke have been contradictory. Some studies have found an association between high dietary cholesterol intake and an increased risk of stroke, while others have associated the consumption of eggs, which are high in cholesterol, with a reduced risk of stroke.

The dietary habits of 1,950 men aged between 42 and 60 years with no baseline diagnosis of cardiovascular disease were assessed at the onset the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, KIHD, in 1984-1989. APOE phenotype data were available for 1,015 of the men participating in the study. Of those, 32 per cent were known carriers of APOE4.

During a follow-up of 21 years, 217 men were diagnosed with a stroke. The study found that neither dietary cholesterol nor egg consumption was associated with the risk of stroke - not even in carriers of APOE4.

The findings suggested that moderate cholesterol intake or daily egg consumption are not associated with the risk of stroke, even in persons who are genetically predisposed to a greater effect of dietary cholesterol on serum cholesterol levels.

In the highest control group, the study participants had an average daily dietary cholesterol intake of 520 mg and they consumed an average of one egg per day, which means that the findings cannot be generalised beyond these levels. One egg contains approximately 200 mg of cholesterol. In this study, about a fourth of the total dietary cholesterol consumed came from eggs.

Rest may be best medicine to treat some pains

Getting rest may be as effective as taking medication to treat common musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and low back pain, which caused by repeated moderate-strain activitym, scientists have found.

In a study conducted on rats, researchers showed that a  4 week period of rest was nearly as effective as an experimental drug at reducing discomfort and regaining function.

Rest appears to be good first treatment choice, said a researcher.

Other treatments following rest should include exercises to improve tissues, and pain reducers if needed. If symptoms do not subside and strength does not return following this approach, then pharmacological treatments may be needed to aid recovery, the researcher said.

The researchers trained rats to repeatedly pull a lever in order to model the types of repetitive-strain injuries humans experience.

After 12 weeks, the rats showed a weaker grip strength, discomfort and increased collagen production in the forearm- evidence of strain-induced tissue damage.

The researchers then allowed the rats to rest for 4 weeks. During this rest period one group of rats received an experimental drug that blocks a neurotransmitter. Substance P, which is associated with the sensation of pain, while the other group did not.

We found that the 4 week rest treatment reduces collagen production, improved streg=ngth and decreased discomfort, said the Dr.

The drug blocking Substance P signalling also had similar effects, and was somewhat better at improving grip strength, but at the same time made the animals less sensitive to very hot temperatures, which is concerning. This led us to conclude that rest may be the better treatment, she said.

There appears, however, to be a tipping point at which rest is not sufficient and medications are needed, researchers said.

While the study showed rest was sufficient for recovering from repeated moderate-strain activity, previous studies indicated it was not sufficient when the lever was harder to pull, causing more strain.

In investigating the Substance P-blocking agent and other drugs, the researchers are focused on developing ways to help the tissue actually recover from overuse-induced injury, not jsut relieve pain.

In previous experiments the researchers tried giving the rats ibuprofen and other pain relievers while they were performing the lever pulling task, however, this seemed to only mask the pain while allowing rats to continue to pull hard, worsening tissue damage.
