Can Vitamin C Protect You from COVID-19?

An important note

No supplement will cure or prevent disease.

With the 2019 coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, it’s especially important to understand that no supplement, diet, or other lifestyle modification other than social distancing and proper hygiene practices can protect you from COVID-19.

You may have noticed the vitamin C section of the supplement aisle looking bare these days or seen the claims on social media that vitamin C can help with COVID-19.

While physicians and researchers are studying the effects of high dose intravenous (IV) vitamin C on the new coronavirus, no supplement, including vitamin C, can prevent or treat COVID-19.

This article reviews what vitamin C is, how it affects immunity, how it’s being tried for COVID-19 treatment in a hospital setting, and whether taking an oral supplement is beneficial.
What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with several roles in your body. It’s a potent antioxidant, meaning it can neutralize unstable compounds in your body called free radicals and help prevent or reverse cellular damage caused by these compounds.

It’s also involved in a number of biochemical processes, many of which are related to immune health.

The Daily Value (DV) for vitamin C is 90 mg per day, but breastfeeding women need an extra 30 mg and people who smoke need an extra 35 mg per day.

It’s pretty easy to meet your vitamin C needs through your diet as long as you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. For example, a single medium orange provides 77% of the DV, and 1 cup (160 grams) of cooked broccoli provides 112% of the DV.

Vitamin C affects your immune health in several ways. Its antioxidant activity can decrease inflammation, which may help improve your immune function.

Vitamin C also keeps your skin healthy by boosting collagen production, helping the skin serve as a functional barrier to keep harmful compounds from entering your body. Vitamin C in the skin can also promote wound healing .

The vitamin also boosts the activity of phagocytes, immune cells that can “swallow” harmful bacteria and other particles.

In addition, it promotes the growth and spread of lymphocytes, a type of immune cell that increases your circulating antibodies, proteins that can attack foreign or harmful substances in your blood.

In studies of its effectiveness against viruses that cause the common cold, vitamin C doesn’t appear to make you any less likely to get a cold — but it may help you get over a cold faster and make the symptoms less severe.

There’s also some evidence from animal research and case studies in humans that high dose or IV vitamin C can reduce lung inflammation in severe respiratory illnesses caused by H1N1 (“swine flu”) or other viruses.

However, these doses were far above the DV, and there’s not enough research to support the use of high dose vitamin C for lung inflammation at this time. You shouldn’t take high doses of vitamin C supplements — even orally — because they can cause side effects like diarrhea.

    Summary

Vitamin C is an important nutrient found in fruit and vegetables that may help shorten the duration and severity of colds. High doses are being studied for their potential to decrease lung inflammation, but more research is needed.

Vitamin C and COVID-19

In an article published in the Chinese Journal of Infection Diseases, the Shanghai Medical Association endorsed the use of high dose vitamin C as a treatment for hospitalized people with COVID-19.

Doses that are magnitudes higher than the DV are recommended to be given through IV to improve lung function, which may help keep a patient off of mechanical ventilation or life support.

Additionally, a 2019 review found that both oral and IV high dose vitamin C treatment may aid people admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) for critical illnesses by reducing ICU stay length by 8% and shortening the duration of mechanical ventilation by 18.2%.

Chinese researchers have also registered a clinical trial to further study the effectiveness of IV vitamin C in hospitalized people with COVID-19.

However, it’s important to note that vitamin C is not yet a standard part of the treatment plan for COVID-19 because evidence is still lacking .

Though high dose IV vitamin C is currently being tested to see if it can improve lung function in people with COVID-19, no evidence suggests that high doses of oral vitamin C supplements can help with the disease. In fact, they can cause complications like diarrhea .

    Summary

High dose IV vitamin C has been used in China to help improve lung function in people with COVID-19. However, vitamin C’s effectiveness is still being tested. There’s no evidence to support the use of oral vitamin C supplements for COVID-19.

Do you need to supplement?

Currently, no evidence supports the use of oral vitamin C supplements to prevent COVID-19.

Vitamin C may help shorten the duration and severity of colds caused by other viruses, but this is no guarantee that it will have the same effect on the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Additionally, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. It dissolves in water, meaning that excess amounts aren’t stored in your body but instead eliminated through your urine. Taking more vitamin C does not mean that your body is absorbing more .

High dose vitamin C supplements may even cause diarrhea, as they can signal your body to pull water out of the cells and into your digestive tract.

Moreover, although high dose vitamin C appears promising for COVID-19 treatment, these doses were exceptionally high and given via IV — not taken orally. Additionally, it was only given in cases severe enough to require hospitalization.

Your best bet is to eat a diet that’s full of a variety of fruits and vegetables, which naturally provide all the vitamin C a healthy person needs — along with many other nutrients and antioxidants.

Choosing a supplement

If you do choose to take a vitamin C supplement, it’s important to choose one that’s high quality and to take the correct dose.

While supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they aren’t held to the same safety standards as pharmaceuticals. Thus, it’s important to purchase supplements from reputable companies.

Some third-party organizations, such as NSF International, ConsumerLab, and United States Pharmacopeia (USP), test supplements for purity and label accuracy. You may want to choose a vitamin C supplement that has been tested by one of these companies.

Additionally, the Upper Limit (UL) for supplemental vitamin C — the amount most people can consume daily without negative effects — is 2,000 mg.

Most vitamin C supplements provide a daily dose of anywhere from 250–1,000 mg, so it can be easy to exceed the UL if you’re not careful. Be sure to read the packaging and take only the recommended dose to avoid complications.

Vitamin C may also interfere with chemotherapy, radiation treatments, or cholesterol lowering drugs .

That said, when used in clinical settings treating critically ill patients, very high dose vitamin C treatments are safe and not associated with significant side effects .

If you have any concerns about vitamin C supplements, you should consult your healthcare provider before adding it to your routine.

    Summary

There’s no evidence that vitamin C supplements help prevent COVID-19. In fact, high doses are likely just excreted through your urine. If you do supplement, choose a product tested by a third party and don’t take more than 2,000 mg per day.

The bottom line

Vitamin C is an important nutrient that keeps your immune system functioning properly.

According to a report published by the Shanghai Medical Association, high dose IV vitamin C may improve lung function in hospitalized people with COVID-19.

However, there’s no proof that oral vitamin C supplements will help treat or prevent COVID-19.

To get plenty of immune-strengthening vitamin C in your diet, make sure you’re eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Though there’s currently no cure for COVID-19, preventive measures like social distancing and proper hygiene can help protect you from developing the disease.

Tomato seeds have no cholesterol. Thus, tomato seeds don’t add cholesterol to your diet. Tomato seeds are high in fiber; fiber is known to lower cholesterol. Tomato seeds also are rich sources of niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin has been used to lower cholesterol levels for many years.

23. Lower Blood Pressure

An Israelite researcher found that tomato seeds bring about a significant drop in blood pressure. The research was spread over eight weeks, where subjects ingested seeded tomatoes daily. It was noted that their blood pressure levels dropped. Tomato seeds and the berry itself contain an antioxidant called lycopene complex. This encourages a drop in both systolic (upper limit) and diastolic (lower limit) by approximately 5 points.

24. Prevent Blood Clots

Along with Vitamin C, lycopene and niacin, tomato flesh contains many health benefits. However, the seeds are surrounded by a mucus layer. The layer has been patented as Fruitlow by researchers. Fruitlow and lycopene both help unblock and prevent blood clots. Blood clotting is one of the major reasons for heart diseases today. Tomato seeds help prevent blood clots.

25. Anti-Inflammatory

Free radical production can activate the inflammatory compounds. Inflammatory compounds promote chronic ailments like atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular disease. Tomato seeds’ lycopene and beta-carotene eradicate free radicals. This, in turn, helps arrest inflammation. Tomato seeds are thus an effective anti-inflammatory agent.

26. Prevent Acidosis

The human body is designed to maintain a pH of 7.365. However, our diet, irregular food patterns, and no exercise ensure that our body has a higher concentration of acid. This can cause acidosis, congestion, and reflux. Usually, the pH balance can be maintained by including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium. Tomato flesh and seeds contain high amounts of these essential bases, and tomato seeds help us maintain the required pH balance and thus prevent acidosis.

27. Boost Immunity

Tomato seeds and flesh have been credited as immunity boosting agents. They help avoid common cold and influenza, especially for males. Carotenoid deficiency has been identified as the main culprit in these commonly occurring diseases. Low amounts of lycopene and beta-carotene have also been held responsible. Tomato seeds are excellent sources of the antioxidant lycopene and beta-carotene. Thus, they are effective immunity boosting agents.

28. Improves Eyesight

Tomatoes and their seeds contain high amounts of Vitamin A. Vitamin A has often been associated with excellent eyesight, and a deficiency of this vitamin causes night blindness. Tomato seeds thus help improve eyesight.

29. Act As A Stress Reliever

Tomato extract is often used in luxurious body massage oils to combat visible sign of stress on the skin. Tomato extract is also used in eye creams, which, along with other essential ingredients, leaves the eyes looking fresh and revitalized.

30. Perfect Astringent

The astringent properties of tomato make it an excellent choice for combination skin.
  • A pack made from mashed avocados and tomatoes soothes the skin and cleanses it thoroughly to give you a glowing complexion.
  • Apply this face pack and wash it off with lukewarm water after 20 to 30 minutes. Tomato contains natural oil reducing and astringent properties while avocado provides an antiseptic and moisturizing effect to the skin.

31. Fight Cellular Damage

Consumption of at least 16 milligrams of lycopene every day reduces the amount of free radicals in the body to give you a youthful skin. It fights cellular damage and reddening of the skin and also retains the moisture, thus preventing fine lines and wrinkles. This property of tomato makes it an amazing anti-aging product.

32. Natural Bleaching Agent

Tomato is considered as a natural bleaching agent and is very helpful in lightening the skin tone.
  • Prepare a face pack by mixing 1 teaspoon of oatmeal, 1 teaspoon of yogurt and 2 teaspoons of tomato pulp.
  • Apply it on the face and neck and leave it for 20 minutes. Oatmeal will gently exfoliate the skin, while yogurt and tomato will help to clear the blemishes. This improves the complexion.

33. Smooth Skin

Mix honey with tomato juice to make a thick paste. Apply it on the face and wash it off after 15 minutes to get a smooth and glowing skin.

34. Help Fight Hair Loss

Tomatoes are considered to be an excellent cure for hair loss. It is believed that application of tomato pulp on the scalp can prevent hair loss. Simply juice a tomato and apply the juice (along with the pulp) to your hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse as usual. Repeat 3 times a week.

35. Condition Hair

Tomatoes are amazing natural conditioners coming straight from your kitchen. They provide natural shine to the hair and makes it soft and manageable. Take a few drops of tomato oil in your hand and apply it on your hair. This will act as a leave-in conditioner and will keep the hair manageable and frizz free.

36. Treat Dry Hair

Pure, homemade tomato puree can help in bringing radiance and elasticity to dry hair. Mix tomato puree with oil and apply it on the hair. Leave it for 20 minutes and then wash it off. This will make the hair super smooth, shiny and flexible as it contains high amounts of protein in it.
Moisture often escapes from the scalp during winters, making the hair strands dry and brittle, leading to breakage. So make sure to keep your hair replenished with the help of tomatoes. Tomatoes help to lock the much-needed moisture in the hair to prevent it from dry.

37. Clears Hair Stains

Regular swimming often changes the color of the hair due to the high amount of chlorine present in the pool water. Tomato can be a great help to remove the stains from the hair. Apply pure tomato juice to the hair and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse it off with water, followed by shampoo and conditioning. Tomato juice also acts as a soaking agent to remove odors. Apply freshly squeezed tomato juice on the scalp and massage your hair with it for a few minutes. Leave it for 30 minutes and then wash it off as usual.

38. Treat Dandruff And Itchy Scalp

Tomatoes are very useful for curing itchy scalp and dandruff. Itchy scalp and dandruff lead to other scalp problems, like eczema and scalp psoriasis. Tomato contains a high amount of Vitamin C, which fights dandruff and provides collagen for proper tissue development of the scalp.
Take 2 to 3 ripe tomatoes and make a thick pulp out of it. Add 2 tablespoon of lemon juice to it and mix well to form a smooth paste. Apply the pack gently on the scalp. Do not scratch the scalp with nails. Apply it properly on the scalp and leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with water and let it dry.
Tomato hair rinse can be used to impart shine and remove excess build-up from the scalp. Take 3 ripe tomatoes, remove the skin and seeds and squeeze the juice out of it. Spray it on your hair and scalp and wash it off after 1 hour.

7 Benefits of Kiwano (Horned Melon)

Kiwano melon is an exotic, peculiar-looking fruit from the central and southern regions of Africa.

image.png

It’s formally known as Cucumis metuliferus but informally also goes by horned melonand African horned cucumber.
When ripe, the thick outer skin of a kiwano melon is bright orange and covered in small spiny projections or horns. The inner flesh consists of a gelatinous, lime-green or yellow substance that houses a multitude of edible seeds.
Though kiwano melon isn’t a fruit you’re likely to find in an average fruit basket, including it in your diet may be good for your health.
Here are 7 benefits of kiwano melon and tips on how to eat it.

Kiwano melon boasts an array of vitamins and minerals, many of which play a role in its ability to positively impact health.
A single kiwano melon (209 grams) provides the following nutrients: carbs, Vitamins A, B6, C and E, iron, magnesium, fat, protein, zinc, calcium, potassium and phosphorus in adequate amount.
Kiwano melon is mainly comprised of water and relatively low in calories, carbs, and fat. About 16% of its calories come from protein — which is relatively high compared to other fruits.
This unique nutrient distribution makes kiwano melon suitable for a variety of diet plans.

Kiwano melon is not only nutritious but also offers several potent antioxidants — many of which are nutrients themselves.
Antioxidants are compounds found in certain foods that can protect against cellular damage caused by oxidative stress in your body.
Though oxidative reactions are a normal part of human metabolism, too much oxidative strain can result in inflammation and impaired cellular function over time.
You can minimize this potential damage by providing your body with an adequate supply of  antioxidant-rich foods like kiwano melon.
The main antioxidants in kiwano melon are vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc, and lutein. Together, these nutrients play a role in reducing inflammation and preventing chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer .
Moreover, the edible seeds found within the fruit’s pulp provide vitamin E — another nutrient with antioxidant properties .

Kiwano melon is a good source of iron and provides about 13% of your daily needs.
Red blood cells store an iron-containing substance called hemoglobin, which is used to transport oxygen through your body.
Thus, an adequate supply of dietary iron is necessary for your body to produce enough healthy red blood cells for proper oxygenation .
Plant sources of iron — such as kiwano melon — contain a form of the mineral known as non-heme iron. This form isn’t absorbed as efficiently as iron from animal sources.
However, pairing non-heme iron with vitamin C enhances its absorption rate .
Coincidentally, kiwano melon supplies a significant amount of vitamin C as well. This can improve the absorption of the iron present within the fruit, making it more effective for supporting red blood cell production and oxygen transport.

Kiwano melon has a low glycemic index, meaning it doesn’t cause a significant spike in blood sugar  after you eat it.
Additionally, it’s a rich source of magnesium — a mineral that’s directly involved in the metabolism of glucose (sugar) and insulin.
A small study found that kiwano melon extract significantly reduced blood sugar in diabetic rats but not in animals with normal blood sugar levels .
Ultimately, more research is needed to determine whether kiwano melon affects blood sugar in humans.

Water alone is often thought to be synonymous with hydration. However, electrolytes — such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium — are also necessary for maintaining healthy fluid status.
Kiwano melon is made up of about 88% water and contains carbs and electrolytes — making it useful for increasing hydration.
Snacking on a fruit like kiwano melon on a hot summer day or after vigorous exercise can help keep you fueled and well-hydrated throughout the day.

Kiwano melon contains magnesium and zinc — two minerals that are closely related to mental health and healthy brain function maintenance.
Both magnesium and zinc are involved in producing neurotransmitters that impact mood and are linked to some mood-related disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
One study evaluated the use of magnesium for treating mild depression and anxiety disorders in 126 people. Those who received magnesium reported significant improvements in their symptoms.

Research that focuses specifically on kiwano melon’s effect on health is minimal. However, many of the nutrients it contains are well-known for supporting your body’s systems in other ways:
  • Supports bone health: Kiwano melon provides nutrients that support bone remodeling and maintenance of bone strength, including magnesium, vitamin C, and zinc .
  • Encourages healthy skin: The vitamin C and water in kiwano melon may support collagen production, wound healing, and protection from sun damage .
  • Promotes heart health: Kiwano melon is a rich source of magnesium and potassium. These minerals can reduce inflammation, prevent the accumulation of arterial plaque, and help regulate blood pressure.
  • Strengthens immunity: Kiwano melon also offers multiple nutrients that are vital for a healthy immune system, including vitamin C, zinc, iron, and magnesium.
While kiwano melon contains many important nutrients, no single food holds the key to optimal health.
Consider including kiwano melon alongside other nutrient-dense foods to get the most benefit from your diet.

Upon first glance, a kiwano melon may appear far from edible. In fact, it looks like it’s more likely to be something from outer space than a fruit.
The outer rind is thick and covered with tiny spikes. Before it’s ripe, the fruit is dark green, but as it ripens, it becomes a creamy shade of orange.
Though the rind is edible, most people stick to eating the gooey inner flesh, which is full of seeds. Many eat the seeds, too, as their sheer quantity makes them difficult to remove from the pulp.
If you’re bold enough to eat the rind, make sure you cut off the spikes first.
The flavor of kiwano melon is mild and slightly sweet. It tastes similar to its close relative, the cucumber. When it’s very ripe, you may be able to detect a hint of banana flavor, too.
The simplest way to eat a kiwano melon is to slice it open and spoon the pulp directly from the rind. Some people add a little salt or sugar to enhance its flavor. It may be eaten fresh or cooked.
If you’re feeling creative, you can add the pulp to smoothies or use it to top yogurt, granola, or an ice cream sundae. It also makes for a delicious addition to sauces and dressings.

An aspirin a day linked to a higher risk of melanoma in men

New research has found a link between taking a daily aspirin and a higher risk of melanoma in men, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Carried out by researchers, the study looked at medical records from 195,140 patients aged 18 to 89, who had no prior history of melanoma.

From this base, 1,187 of the patients were aspirin exposed, with the researchers only including patients who had been taking aspirin daily for at least one year at a dose of 81 or 325 milligrams.

All patients were followed for at least five years to see if melanoma occurred over time.

The team found that from the 1,187 aspirin-exposed patients, 2.19 percent had a subsequent diagnosis for melanoma, compared to 0.86 percent of those in aspirin-unexposed patients.

However, when the researchers looked at the groups by gender, they found that men exposed to aspirin had nearly double the risk of melanoma than the men who were unexposed.

Exposed women, however, did not have an increased risk.

Senior study author commented that she was surprised by the findings, as aspirin has previously been found to reduce risk of gastric, colon, prostate and breast cancer.

“Given the widespread use of aspirin and the potential clinical impact of the link to melanoma, patients and health care providers need to be aware of the possibility of increased risk for men,” says the Dr. “This does not mean men should stop aspirin therapy to lower the risk of heart attack.”
She advises that health care practitioners speak to patients about the importance of staying safe in the sun, avoiding tanning beds, and visiting a dermatologist for skin checks to help reduce the risk of skin cancers.

With regards to the differences seen between men and women, the Dr. commented that although there are many potential explanations, one reason men may be more vulnerable could be because they have a lower amount of protective enzymes compared to females.

“These lower levels of protective enzymes suggest that a higher level of resulting oxidative cellular damage in men might contribute to the possibility of developing melanoma,” said the Dr.

The researchers also noted that previous studies have actually reported a reduced risk of cancers in aspirin-exposed men and an increased risk in aspirin-exposed women, however the Dr. believes that these contradictory results could be due to the variability of the research methods used in studies that look for associations and risks for cancers.
