9 Tips to Help You Get Rid of Greasy Hair

Very few of us have the time to wash our hair on a daily basis, but sometimes, we just have no choice, as, by day two, our hair starts looking flat and oily at the roots. If you are one of those people whose hair gets oily very quickly and you end up losing volume and a clean appearance to your hair soon after washing it, the tips and tricks we’re about to share with you will come in handy. We will show you how to train your hair to produce less oil and give several handy tips and DIY tricks that can help reduce the appearance of greasy hair, so that you not only save time by washing your hair less often but also save money by having to use fewer haircare products.

1. Add salt to your shampoo
If your scalp produces too much oil, you can balance it out by simply adding salt into your shampoo. To use this trick, add 2 tablespoons of salt into a 16 oz (450 ml) bottle of shampoo, shake the bottle, wait for the salt to dissolve, and then use it as usual. You will see the effects of the salt after a few washes: your hair will not get oily as fast and you will also have more volume in your hair.
We prefer using Epsom salt, as it's higher in minerals, such as magnesium, and can nourish and promote the health of your scalp while making it less oily, but any salt will do the job just as well.


2. Use dry shampoo
Dry shampoos are powders that come either in aerosol cans or regular bottles that you spray directly onto the roots of the hair to reduce the appearance of oily hair without having to wash the hair. These products will help you extend the time between washes for a day or two, and they are widely available both online and in drugstores or beauty stores.
To use the dry shampoo, simply apply the product directly onto the areas of your hair that are the oiliest. If you have long hair, you might have to divide the hair into sections before applying the product. Let the dry shampoo sit in the hair for a few minutes to allow it to soak up the oils, and then brush through your hair to avoid any white residue being left behind.


3. Dry shampoo alternatives
If you don't feel like investing in dry shampoo, or you simply need a quick fix in a pinch but have no dry shampoo on hand, you can also use a small amount of baby powder, cornstarch, or cacao powder (for dark hair) as a replacement for dry shampoo. These products are typically not as effective as dry shampoo because they're not designed to be used on hair, but they do work.
Products that contain a lot of alcohol, such as hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes, or even perfume can also be used to soak up the excess oils from your scalp. To use these, rub a small amount of the product onto the oily areas of the scalp, and after a few minutes - the product will evaporate and absorb the oils.


4. Wash your hair less often
The natural oils your scalp produces are there for a reason. Much like the sebaceous glands on the rest of the skin, the oil glands in your scalp produce sebum to moisturize and protect your scalp from damage. Shampoos strip the hair and scalp of these natural oils. The more you wash your hair, the more oils your scalp is forced to produce.
Many people find that by washing their hair less often, they actually experience less oil production in their hair. So, if you wash your hair every day, try doing so every other day, and this change alone may help train your scalp to become less oily with time.  


5. Not all hair care products are the same
Similarly to the way there are different skincare products that are targeted towards different skin types (oily, dry, combo, sensitive), hair care is manufactured to suit different hair types as well. If you have oily hair, using a shampoo or conditioner that is targeted at dry or bleached hair and contains more moisturizing ingredients may actually do you a disservice, especially if you use it all the time. Instead, occasionally use clarifying and volumizing shampoos that will help control the oil production and clarify your scalp.
It's also best to avoid styling creams or mousses if you have oily hair, as these often contain waxes and oils that can make your hair look even oilier and weigh it down. If your hair is oily at the roots, but dry at the ends, however, you can use hair oils and styling creams, but avoid applying them to the roots of the hair.


6. Don't apply conditioner on the roots
If you already have greasy hair, it means that the oil glands in your scalp are already doing an excellent job at moisturizing the roots of your hair, and using conditioner in the root area would only make your hair greasier. Instead, apply conditioner only at the ends. Also, if you have really short and oily hair, you can easily skip conditioner altogether.


7. Don't straighten your hair
If your hair is really oily, straightening it will only enhance the oiliness, as straight hair is much closer to the scalp than curly or wavy hair. For this reason, leaving a wave or curl into your hair can actually make your hair more voluminous, and hence - less oily. Occasionally, you can straighten your hair, but make sure to add dry shampoo right after styling your hair, as this will help keep your hair oil-free for longer.


8. Brush strategically
Like straightening, frequent brushing sleeks down your hair, which forces closer contact of the hair with the sebum of the scalp, so only brush your hair when you're styling it in the morning and then once more before bed.
Apart from that, the brush you use matters, too, as natural bristled brushes, such as wooden combs and boar bristle brushes actually absorb some of the oils from your scalp and help distribute them more evenly throughout the hair all the way to your ends as you're brushing your hair. This will not only help your oily scalp but will also make your entire hair shinier. 


9. Use scalp scrubs
Exfoliating your scalp is another excellent method to train your hair to produce less oil. There are many scalp scrubs that contain charcoal or salt that help absorb sebum available in stores today, but you can also make your own DIY scrub at home from ingredients you may already have at home.
To prepare your own scalp scrub, combine 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of honey and 3 drops of rosemary essential oil in a small bowl. Wet your hair before applying the mask onto your scalp and massage the scalp for a few minutes, then leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes, subsequently washing your hair with shampoo and applying a conditioner as usual.
Apart from making your hair less oily, this mask is excellent for hair growth, preventing dandruff, and increasing blood circulation in the scalp. It is recommended to use this mask once a week to see significant results.

This novel method can predict fatal heart disease


A novel method called stress cardiac MRI can not only diagnose heart disease, but can also predict which cases are potentially fatal, suggests a new research.

The study showed that predicting mortality is a key requirement for the technology to be more widely used. 

In addition, results suggest cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has the potential to be a non-invasive, non-toxic alternative to stress echocardiograms, catheterisations and stress nuclear exams in identifying the severity of the coronary heart disease.

"We've known for some time that CMR is effective at diagnosing coronary artery disease, but it's still not commonly used and represents less than one per cent of stress tests used in this country," said  senior author of the study.

For the study, researchers analysed data from more than 9,000 patients who underwent CMR.

The findings, showed that for patients without any history of  heart disease and at low-risk based on traditional clinical criteria, those with an abnormal CMR scan were 3.4 times more likely to die compared to patients with a normal CMR scan.

For the entire patient population, there was a strong association between an abnormal stress CMR and mortality, even after adjusting for patient age, sex and cardiac risk factors, the team found.

While non-invasive cardiac stress testing is a cornerstone in the clinical management of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease, CMR works as well or better than other exams at identifying heart wall motion, cell death and the presence of low blood flow, said the study.

Furthermore, the technology does not require any radiation exposure, which is essential in nuclear stress tests.

"With the findings from this study suggesting that stress CMR is effective in predicting mortality, we provide a strong basis for a head-to-head study between stress CMR and other modalities," the author noted.

Have your own Knee; a benchmark treatment for Knee Arthritis



The symptoms of arthritis, which has affected an estimated 180 million Indians, are stiffness or swelling of knees, knee lock or clicking, loss of gait in walking, buckling of knees in some cases, and pain in knees or even loss of mobility.



The key-hole procedure that the doctors are offering, aka stem cell alternative to knee replacement, is done by harvesting stem cells from the patient’s pelvis and injecting it into their knee joint.


"The worn-out cartilage in the knee which is the cause of all the discomfort and pain is first removed. Then the stem cells are mixed with clotting gel and injected into the knee joint. These stem cells help in the growth of new cartilage,” shares the Dr.

The surgery takes about an hour and a half and the patient remains in the hospital less than 48 hours totally. “We give spinal anesthesia to make both legs numb below the abdomen and the patient remains awake throughout the procedure,” says the Dr. adding that in rare cases general anesthesia is given.

The doctors had worked in the UK under  an Indian origin doctor - who along with a Prof. from South Korea pioneered the knee cartilage regeneration procedure - before returning to India and setting up the hospital in 2011 along with two other doctors.



This procedure received the prestigious Hunterian award for best surgical innovation in the UK in 2017. This is the first hospital to introduce this procedure in India and has performed around 350 such surgeries so far.


As awareness about the surgery is reaching the people, the number of patients undergoing the knee cartilage regeneration procedure at this hospital is increasing day by day.

The numbers speak for themselves. While between 2012 and 2016 the hospital performed 100 surgeries, there were 250 cases in the last two years.

“Happy patients are our referrals. We do not advertise much,” says the Dr., who feels in the next 10 years stem cell knee treatment will replace knee replacement by at least 50 per cent globally.
According to the doctors, the major advantage of stem cell knee treatment is that it is a natural way to preserve one’s knee and avoids any artificial implant in the body. But knee replacement surgeries require a revision surgery after 15-20 years and there is also high risk of infections attacking the region of the implant, since a foreign material is implanted into the body.

The stem cell knee cartilage regeneration treatment can be performed at any age. Around 60 per cent of patients who underwent the procedure at the hospital were above 60 years (40 patients were in the age group of 65-80), 30 per cent were in the age group of 50-60 and around 10 per cent were below 50 years.

“We are getting patients from all over India, from as far as Punjab and Assam, and from foreign countries such as Kenya and Zimbabwe,” says the Dr. Outstation patients need not worry about frequent trips to the hospital for post-operative care. “They can just send x-ray through email or WhatsApp and follow up with phone consultation.”



Though the knee cartilage regeneration treatment is available in UK, it is far expensive there compared to the rates offered by this hospital. “We charge Rs 1.6 lakh, but whereas in the UK it would cost around 18 lakh in Indian rupees. We expect more patients from abroad,” says the Dr.


The cost of stem cell knee treatment or knee cartilage regeneration surgery is much lower than knee replacement surgery in India. Patients vouch for it.

A 62-year-old housewife came to the hospital last year from Bengaluru, with her feet swollen from arthritis. The swelling used to get worse in the morning and she would find it hard to get up on her feet after being in a sitting position or after lying down.

The swelling has now gone and she has got much relief from the pain. “We are here to do the surgery on her other knee. We are happy with her progress,” says her son, who chose this hospital after consulting other major hospitals for a knee replacement surgery. “Their rate came to around Rs 3.5 lakh for knee replacement surgery, but we decided to do the stem cell surgery .”

Eight months later they have come back for the surgery on the second knee. The total cost for the two surgeries would still be less than the amount they would have spent on a single joint replacement surgery in the other hospitals that they had checked with earlier.

"We performed this keyhole cartilage regeneration surgery on an 87-year-old from Bengaluru, the oldest patient we have treated, someone who would be considered too old for knee replacement treatment elsewhere. At 87 he is active and has become our brand ambassador now," says the Dr. laughing.



For a 68 year old resident of Kovilpatti in South Tamil Nadu, the stem cell knee surgery was performed by a team guided by Prof., who was on a visit to Chennai, along with this Dr.  in 2017. "I am feeling completely normal today. I am back doing my regular activities," she says.


When a 52-year-old housewife, was diagnosed with arthritis and recommended knee replacement, she was apprehensive about going for surgery but had to take a decision as the pain in her knees was persistent, also affecting her mobility severely.

She had reached stage four arthritis and her legs had also begun to buckle. A radiologist then suggested that she check on the keyhole procedure for cartilage regrowth that was showing promise as an alternative to knee replacement.

After doing their research on the internet, including watching surgery videos,the lady visited this hospital, which is close to her residence. The doctors encouraged her to speak to others who had undergone the keyhole surgery and their testimonials boosted her confidence.

She underwent the surgery in September 2017 and the results delighted her. In July 2018 she got a surgery done on her other knee as well. "The pain was down by 90 percent in the first knee. I am now looking forward to drive the car," says the lady, who has since been promoting the surgery among her friends as well as those who call and ask.


"It is cost effective but the relief from pain is the biggest gainer. It is also natural which is why I went in for this surgery," she says.

For the doctor entrepreneurs,  the last financial year turned out good when they achieved a turnover of Rs 6 crore. But for them the real reward is in seeing more and more people benefitting from their technique and relieved of their pain.

Sharing their future plans, the Dr . says, “We are operating on a light asset model and working out of a leased building. We are currently having a 30-bed facility, and we are doing an average of two to three surgeries per day, which includes all types of orthopaedic surgeries. Our vision is to develop a world class orthopaedic chain.”

"The Pill" For Men Might Soon Be a Thing

It looks like the Pill, which has been taken as a contraceptive by women for several decades, will now have an alternative that’s designed for men.
 
A recent study found that a trial pill was able to block sperm production in men while being safe for their health. 

The pill, which is made out of Dimethandrolone undecanoate (aka DMAU), was found to reduce testosterone levels and other hormones that spark sperm production. Dr. added that the goal was to develop a contraceptive method for men that has minimal side effects.

Serving as an androgen and a progestin, the pill provides an alternative to vasectomies, condoms and coitus interruptus. Some 40% of all pregnancies worldwide are actually unplanned, so there’s clearly an unmet need for new contraceptives, especially when it comes to men.

Some 83 men aged 18 to 50 participated in the study, and they were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The members of each group were given 100mg, 200mg and 400mg doses of the new pill respectively.
Following the 28-day trial period, participants’ testosterone levels were observed to have dropped to “castrate levels”, which is the ideal of testosterone in the blood after surgical or chemical castration. 

Furthermore, members of the 400mg group were observed to have had a drop in two hormones that regulated testosterone and sperm production.

Testosterone levels in a healthy man range from 350 to 1,100 nanograms per deciliter, and the pill managed to reduce their levels down to 13 nanograms per deciliter, which would be the testosterone levels normally associated with a pre-pubescent boy or teenage girl.

Just nine of the participants experienced a decreased libido, which would be a negligible amount if scaled up to a few million people.
Dr. noted that researchers have been working on male hormonal contraception for some 40 to 50 Years without that much success. 

Although long-acting implants and injections have been developed, men have always been interested in having an oral pill available, and this research represents a step forward in that area.

Simply reducing men’s testosterone levels down to the levels observed in the study would result in side effects similar to those experienced by women when they go through menopause. This includes marked changes in sexual desire and function here.

As a result, it’s important to point out that this pill includes a steroid to provide androgen activity in all other parts of the men’s bodies. The problem with the study conducted is that its time-frame didn’t allow for the researchers to be able to say what the long-term effects of taking it would be, however they did establish what could become a potentially safe dosage.

The next step with this pill is to trial it over three months, and that is in the pipeline in the near future. Longer-term studies will still be needed to fine-tune any potential side effects, as well couple studies to demonstrate that it actually works in the real world.

An Electronic Implant to Return Motor Function

There’s renewed hope that paraplegic and quadriplegic patients will one day be able to return motor and sensory function to their affected limbs, thanks to a brand-new invention by doctors in the US.
 
The stimulator they have come up with bypasses spinal injuries by forcing the body to use alternative neural pathways in order to transmit signals to the body’s extremities. In fact, the most recent test that the doctors conducted saw a quadriplegic’s finger motion improve by 300% while simultaneously improving grip strength, giving the patient the ability to perform everyday tasks once again.

Last June, the doctors implanted the stimulator into the body of a 28-year-old quadriplegic named Brian Gomez. The operation was conducted at Ronald Reagan University in California, USA. Gomez suffered his injuries during a dirt biking accident when he was 23 years old.

He broke his neck at his C-5 vertebra, which is at the middle of the neck next to the thyroid cartilage. This means that he lost all motor functions at his extremities, but retained head-to-toe sensation. Due to the nature of the injury he suffered, he was considered to be the perfect candidate for the experimental treatment.
Gomez assisted the researchers by giving them feedback on the sensations he was feeling from the stimulator so that they could be adjusted accordingly. The stimulator contains a series of 32 electrodes that can send pulses around the injured area, and that’s why it was implanted into the patient’s neck – to bypass the injury.
A great analogy for how the stimulator works is what occurs when there’s an accident on a freeway. While it’s almost inevitable that traffic will come to a standstill, there are numerous side streets and detours that can be taken to bypass the scene of the accident and reach the final destination.
 Neural signals are like traveling vehicles, the scene of the accident is the injury, and the alternate routes are the new pathways that the stimulator helps the spinal cord to find.
 
In addition to the stimulator and its electrodes, the researchers also implanted a battery pack into the patient so that the electrical stimulation they were providing to him could be fine-tuned into certain patterns, thus providing more or less stimulation to certain areas as needed.
The concept behind this is to stimulate neural pathways that the brain might be ignoring. Over time, these pathways open up and allow messages to pass through them. In essence, the whole process is like retraining the body to use the undamaged “side streets” so that the neural messages can arrive, thus returning functionality to the body’s extremities.

This particular study marks the very first time that doctors have tried electrode technology on someone suffering from quadriplegia stemming from a neck injury. It’s also the first time that such technology has been implanted under the skin to attempt to treat such an injury.

Despite the excitement resulting from this genuine medical breakthrough, it must be emphasized that the researchers’ intention was never to return affected limbs back to 100% functionality. In fact, the main goal was for hands to be able to impart enough force in order for the patient to be able to do tasks such as brushing his teeth, tying his shoelaces, or simply eating food with a fork.

Although the breakthrough is undoubtedly fascinating, researchers are exercising caution with regard to expectations, and this is because the stimulator has only been tested on a single patient to date. More data needs to be gathered, followed by a peer review and publication of the researchers’ definitive results. 

Nevertheless, it’s a hugely exciting time for paraplegics and quadriplegics who now have hope of returning some motor function to their extremities.
