Are you weakening your immune system by committing these 5 mistakes?

As the novel coronavirus continues to wreak havoc, nations around the globe are taking strong measures in a bid to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. Among city lockdowns, quarantines and depressing news on the television, it is understandable if you are feeling overwhelmed and down. This is why it is important to pay attention to our immune system to fight this battle against the pandemic.

In addition to eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, pay attention to these common mistakes that could be putting a strain on your immune system.

You are stressing out
While a global pandemic is a reason in itself to put everyone on the edge, if you get overwhelmed and impacted with tiniest of changes around you, it is time to change that habit. When you are stressed and panicking, your body releases cortisol into your bloodstream. This, in turn, may actually suppress your immune system and make you more susceptible to illnesses.

What can you do? If you feel that a particular situation is stressing you out, the best thing you can do is remove yourself from the situation, distract yourself and do some meditation to calm your nerves.

Sedentary lifestyleBeing on lockdown isn’t necessarily an excuse to skip a workout. Infact, if you weren’t following an active lifestyle before the COVID-19 outbreak, it is time to pull up your socks and start exercising. The internet is flooded with workout sequences that you can easily do at home. If nothing else works, you can always start with some stretching and yoga.

However, it is important to remember that just as a sedentary lifestyle can threaten your immunity, overdoing the same can also take a toll on your immune system. So, try and find a balance between being a couch potato and working out like an Olympic athlete.

You are 'Netflix'ing and chilling your sleep away
We understand that the lockdown has given you ample time to bing on long-pending series and movies. However, it is also important to maintain a proper sleep schedule and get at least 6 to 8 hours of shuteye. This is because your body builds up the strength to fight inflammation and infection as you sleep.

While the duration of sleep varies from person to person, the bottom line is you need to be well-rested and put a pause on that web series when your body starts showing signs of exhaustion. Our advice? Steer clear of any technology at least an hour before you hit the sheets.

Smoking
Yes, in case you didn't know, smoking isn't doing your body any good. So, in addition to toasting your lungs, it is also messing up with your immune system and leaving you more prone to catching flu and other viral infections. For the uninitiated, nicotine can increase your cortisol levels which can you leave you more susceptible to infections.

Moreover, lighting up can also lower the levels of protective antioxidants in your blood. According to Harvard Health Publishing, the best way to kick the butt is to go cold turkey, when compared to gradually reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day.

Binge drinkingIn case you did not know, drinking and spraying alcohol all over your body will not kill the COVID-19 virus. Not only this but occasionally overdrinking can also wreak havoc on your immune system as it disrupts your gut flora and leads to inflammation of the liver.

It is important to understand that consuming any amount of alcohol is injurious to your body. This is why we strongly advice against the consumption of same, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

Green signal to man for neuro muscular treatment

As an interim measure, the Court has allowed a man suffering from a neuro muscular disease to continue with his ongoing Human Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy treatment.

The man was suffering from a rare and life threatening disease – Neuro Muscular, which affects the anterior horn of the spinal cord, brain and leads to weakening of the body muscles.

On account of the Centre’s fresh notification on “New Drugs and Clinical Rule 2019”, some medicine used for the treatment would fall under the definition of “new drug” and require approval from the concerned authority.

He was undergoing Human Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy in a clinic. The clinic, which is administering the medicine, cannot function under the new rules until the licence is duly obtained.

His counsel told the court that the new rules would require that the clinics engaged in such a “new drug” take a marketing licence and there is no provision for providing any interim arrangements during the intervening period between an application being made under the authority, the Drug Controller.

The counsel said that the process is likely to take a few months more and in the interregnum since the treatment has been discontinued by the clinic, the life of the petitioner would be in jeopardy and the petitioner is rapidly losing his muscle strength and facing growing fatigue on account of his condition.

“In the aforesaid circumstances, this Court considers it apposite to direct, as an interim measure, that the treatment being provided to the petitioner will not be impeded,” the court said in its Tuesday’s order,” .

“This is subject to the clinic in question submitting all the information as to the treatment being afforded to the petitioner to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSO), within a period of one week from today,” the court said.

“The concerned authority shall examine whether the said treatment or the products being administered to the petitioner, prima facie, fall within the scope of the expression ‘New Drugs’ as defined under Rule 2(1)(w) of New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019, and communicate its view to the petitioner and the said clinic.”

Accordingly, as an interim measure and till such time the clinic or at least some other clinic applies for a license and the license is processed, the said clinic would continue to provide treatment to him, the bench said.

New Method to Help Predict Mortality in Elderly

Researchers have developed a method to assess the 'age' of patients' immune systems, thus predicting mortality in older adults. According to researchers, the immune age is a kind of biological clock that will help identify an early weakening of the immune system.
The new model will help devise preventive measures to reduce disease and mortality, Xinhua news agency reported. In the study, Technion scientists, along with a team from the Stanford University in California, were able to quantify the changes in the immune system that happen over the years.

In nine years, they characterised the immune systems of 135 healthy people of different ages once a year and built a model that quantifies these changes in a specific person. The data enabled the researchers to quantify the immune age in an index called 'IMM-AGE score', which provides information that the chronological age cannot tell.

Using the new method, the team quantified the immunisation age of more than 2,000 elders. The researchers believe that with the new method, they will also be able to characterise genes that affect immunisation age, and even identify lifestyle, habits and medications that affect the 'age'.

With an increase in inflammatory processes, the human body undergoes slow and constant functional weakening of the immune system. Ageing of the immune system has devastating consequences, including an inability to cope with infections and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer.

The quantification of the immune system's ageing is a complex challenge that requires multidimensional monitoring over time.

'Broken Heart' Syndrome could be brain-based

A heartbreak after a sad event could literally "break your heart" -- and the blame may be on your brain, scientists believe.

"Broken Heart Syndrome', also known as Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), is a sudden temporary weakening of the heart muscles, accompanied by symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath and sometimes heart attack.

TTS usually appears shortly after severe emotional stress like heartbreak after a breakup or death of a loved one, in addition to other types of extreme sadness, anger, or fear.

A recent study published  sought for more clues underpinning a possible heart-brain correlation. The researchers, which comprised of neuroscientists and cardiologists, compared MRI brain scans from 15 TTS patients with those of 39 healthy patients and looked at three areas of the brain -- amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus.

These areas are involved in emotional processing, motivation and memory, collectively controlling our response to stress and regularly interact with each other. The amygdala and cingulate gyrus also handle certain unconscious bodily functions such as the heartbeat and breathing.

According to the study, TTS patients have exhibited a breakdown in communication between these regions of their brains controlling both emotional processing and automatic bodily processes.

"(This finding) strongly supports the idea that the brain is involved in the underlying mechanism of TTS," a cardiology professor and the study's lead researcher, said in a news release.

The study suggests that our emotions can take a much greater toll on our physical health than we realize, which is why it's important to pay attention to your emotional health and holistic well-being.

Can anyone die of a broken heart?

The day of love is Wednesday-14th February, but that brings up the questions, can you die of a broken heart?

Well actually, you can it's called Broken Heart Syndrome and it feels a little bit like a heart attack.
Broken Heart Syndrome is real and it tends to happen more in women than men according to a cardiologist.

The Dr. said he sees approximately one patient per week who may have this syndrome.

It's often due to emotional or physical stress as a result of losing someone or other traumatic issues.

The Dr. sees this syndrome more in women than men especially the older they age.

He explains that it is a form of cardiomyopathy which is the weakening of the heart muscle.

The Dr.  said the symptoms are very similar to a heart attack making it very difficult to diagnose. He said, "It's actually very difficult to diagnose. It presents just like a heart attack would. People present with chest pain, shortness of breath, or having passed out and when they present they often have ECG changes that look like a heart attack as well."

The Dr.  said the syndrome is treatable but there have been some known cases ending in death.
In many cases, Broken Heart Syndrome only lasts for a few weeks and those that have the syndrome once often never get it again.
