Disinfecting Covid-19: B Tech student’s new portable UV racket provides solution

Anant Kumar Rajput, a B Tech mechanical engineering student of Lovely Professional University has developed a portable UV racket that can disinfect almost everything from groceries to currency notes to vehicles.

All one needs to do is wave the racket 4 -5 inches from the object for 60 seconds to disinfect, said project officer and guide Mandeep Singh

LPU has filed a patent for this product and is now looking to tie up with industrial partners for commercialising it.

The racket can run on electricity or via an inbuilt rechargeable battery

LPU researchers have over the last few weeks developed several products like contactless waste collection smart dustbin, Kawach- an IoT device to promote safe social distancing and a Covid19 dashboard to help people track the spread of the deadly virus across the globe.

People with dementia could benefit from Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) can turn out to be a boon for people with dementia as it could aid them recall their memories, minimise aggression and also better their relations with their caregivers, a new study discovered.

Each patient used a VR headset to 'visit' one of five virtual environments (VEs) of a cathedral, a forest, a sandy beach, a rocky beach, and a countryside scene. Sixteen sessions were monitored with feedback gathered from patients and their caregivers.

According to the findings, VR helped patients recall old memories by providing new stimuli difficult to achieve, due to ill-health, or inaccessible within a secure environment.

For example, one patient recalled a holiday when they saw a bridge in the VE because it reminded them of that trip while another remembered a holiday where they visited a market.

One of the researchers said, "VR can clearly have positive benefits for patients with dementia, their families and caregivers. It provides a richer and more satisfying quality of life than is otherwise available, with many positive outcomes."

"With further research it will be possible to further evaluate the elements of VEs that benefit patients and use VR even more effectively," he added.

Adding to it, the researchers said that it becomes easier to produce 360-degree VR videos; it could allow VEs specifically designed for individual patients, such as their home or a favourite location, to be created.

Health Benefits Of Dates

Sometimes the best things come in a small package, and if you’re looking for a particularly sweet example of this claim, you should know the various health benefits of dates!
There are different varieties of dates which are told apart in a few ways: some dates have a special sugar composition that gives them a taste different from that of other varieties, some other dates contain more fibers than all others, some dates are considered a smart choice for those who are watching their calorie intake. It is possible to eat after freezing, and Halawi dates contain large quantities of magnesium. Despite these differences, all dates also have many common features, specifically the fact that they are healthy and contribute to the body in a number of surprising ways. We’ve collected for you 9 of the most important benefits of this fruit, which have been tested and proven by scientists from all over the world, so that you can take advantage of its wonderful abilities and live a long and good life.

1. Provide relief from constipation and similar digestive problems

In many cultures, it is customary to eat dates to treat various digestive problems, and a study in 2014 showed that there is actually a good reason to do so, since its findings showed that the consumption of date extract is an effective treatment for constipation. The reasons for this are probably the rich mineral content of dates, which helps to correct the imbalances that cause constipation, as well as the high fiber content: every 100 grams of dates has about 8 grams of fiber. Most experts recommend that women consume about 20 grams a day and men about 30 grams, and if you’re worried your not getting enough fiber a day, all you have to do is grab a handful of dates in the middle of the day. It should be noted that eating dates can also help people who suffer from other digestive problems such as irritable bowel, bloating and more.

2. Regulate blood pressure

Dates are an excellent source of potassium - a mineral that plays a significant role in maintaining normal blood pressure, and also relieves muscular pain and overall fatigue. Fortunately, potassium can be consumed with many healthy foods, such as bananas, peas, salmon, broccoli, and dates. In fact, one Majhoul date can contain close to 160 mg of potassium, and the fact that dates, in general, are high in fiber also makes eating them beneficial to blood pressure. The efficacy of high blood pressure treatment with natural foods is so high that researchers recommend to treat the phenomenon drug-free, which included a recommendation to eat dates and similar dried fruits.

3. Protect the brain

To protect our brains we can do a lot of things like sleep more, learn new languages and indulge in sweet foods like dates. Various studies have shown that date consumption can protect the brain and fight against oxidative stress and inflammation. The findings of a study in 2016 detail the reasons for this and indicate the antioxidants in dates as the most significant components of this issue. Another study found that these antioxidants have added value and not only protect the brain but also inhibit the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

4. Improve skin health

The contribution of dates to skin’s appearance is not only due to the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which improve skin's elasticity and shine but also from phytohormones, which have been proven as beneficial in a study published recently. One of the positive effects of this component is reducing the levels of melanin in the body, which prevents darkening of the skin and the appearance of aging damage. Of course, this doesn’t mean that dates can stop the passage of time, but eating them regularly can definitely have a positive effect on the appearance of your skin.

5. Provide the body with energy

We all know the exhaustion and fatigue that hit us at the middle of a day of work, as we’ve all yearned for a comfortable bed or a huge cup of coffee instead of a few more hours of work. While these two options have certain advantages, it is advisable to consider a third and far more logical option - eating a handful of dates. Due to the natural sugars found in these fruits (glucose, fructose, and sucrose), they are a great snack to improve energy levels very quickly. There are also many athletes who consume dates after exercising or prolonged effort to speed up their bodies’ recovery process. Since dates contain very low amounts of fat and even a few proteins, about 2.5 grams per 100 grams of dates, they are definitely a perfect snack for athletes, and certainly for you too.

6. Improve love life

If you want to improve your love life and are looking for natural, healthy and safe ways to do so, you should know that date eating has been shown to increase sexual endurance. In the past, eating dates to improve fertility was a traditional and unfounded method of treatment, but over the years, various studies have shown that palm oil and date consumption improves male sperm levels, their ability to maneuver and the quality of their DNA. To enjoy these benefits, you can either eat dates as they are or prepare a traditional mixture according to the following instructions: Place a handful of dates pitted in a regular glass of milk or goat's milk for the night and in the morning crush them and add some honey and cardamom to the mixture. Drink right away and its effects will be felt after a few days.

7. Prevent cardiovascular disease

Dates contain very high amounts of Isoflavones flavonoids - plant compounds with the proven ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Add to this fact all the other benefits and nutrients already mentioned in the article, and you have a super-food to improve heart health. Eating a few dates each day is a sweet and easy way to keep your heart healthy and is also considered a natural preventive treatment for atherosclerosis - a general name for several diseases that cause thickening and stiffening of the artery wall. The sweetness of dates also makes them a healthy snack that replaces high-fat foods and sugars, so that they indirectly contribute to weight loss, a significant risk factor that increases the risk of heart problems.

8. Fight inflammation

One mineral that can be found in dates and has not yet been properly paid attention to is magnesium - a mineral that takes part in decomposition and cell building activities that are constantly being carried out in the body. Since many people don’t consume enough magnesium in their daily diet, it is strongly recommended to eat a handful of dates regularly and thus help the body prevent annoying and painful infections. This recommendation receives scientific support from a study published in 2016, which notes favorably the positive effect of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of dates on the body.

9. Help fight cancer

The last benefit on this list is perhaps the most important of all studies have shown, that eating dates is an activity that prevents the development of various cancers, including stomach and intestinal cancer. These are some of the most common and dangerous cancers, therefore, it is important to know this fact so that we can protect ourselves and the people who are dear to us. Dates also contribute to the proliferation of friendly bacteria in the digestive system, leading to more efficient gastrointestinal activity, resulting in more efficient breakdown and absorption of the nutrients in the food we eat. You can eat your daily date portion with a glass of probiotic yogurt, and thus enjoy twice as much protection from various cancers and strengthen the digestive system.

Preserving donor lungs for longer time may provide greater flexibility during transplants

A new method which doubles the usual time donor lungs can remain outside the body can benefit patients, staff and allow retrieval of donor lungs across greater geographical areas, says a study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

After retrieval, donor lungs are usually bathed in an organ-preserving solution, inflated with oxygen and kept on ice less than eight hours. If too much time passes before the organ can be transplanted, the organ may become too damaged to be used. The maximum acceptable time in most centers has been six to eight hours.

Dr. Marcelo Cypel, thoracic surgeon at Toronto General Hospital (TGH), University Health Network (UHN) and Scientist, Toronto General Research Institute (TGRI) and the Toronto Lung Transplant Program team demonstrated that preserving donor lungs with the help of ex vivo lung perfusion for up to 20 hours is safe and will enable more transplants to be performed with greater flexibility in their timing.

"It's a change in paradigm for how we do lung transplants," says Dr. Cypel, adding that there are many benefits to patients who must uproot their lives to live near a transplant centre, and to staff who frequently perform these complex operations in the middle of the night.

Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program, Surgeon in Chief, Sprott Department of Surgery at UHN, says that "instead of racing the clock to transfer the organ from the donor to the recipient, we have created the opportunity for more detailed assessment and treatment of the organ, while also providing valuable hours to optimize the logistics of the transplant operation. This will eventually translate into improved outcomes and reduced costs of organ transplantation."

The study is published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, November 17, 2016 entitled, "Outcomes after Transplantation of Lungs Preserved for More Than Twelve Hours: A Retrospective Study", by first author UHN thoracic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Yeung, senior author Dr. Cypel, as well as Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, UHN Surgeon-in-Chief and Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program, and Dr. Lianne Singer, Medical Director, Toronto Lung Transplant Program and Clinical Researcher, TGRI.

The study reviewed 906 patients from 2006 to 2015 who received lung transplants at Toronto General Hospital. Ninety-seven (97) of these patients received lungs which were preserved outside the body for more than 12 hours, with an average of 14.6 hours, while 809 patients received lungs that were preserved for less than 12 hours - on average about 6.7 hours.

Despite the use of higher-risk organs in the group in which lungs were preserved for more than 12 hours, early outcomes between the two groups were similar.

The two groups were followed between two and a half and four years, and the main results measured were primary graft dysfunction, or injury to the lung after the first 72 hours and a leading cause of death after transplantation, intensive care unit and hospital stay and survival of patients. No differences were observed between the two groups in primary graft dysfunction, and length of hospital and intensive care unit stay was the same between the two groups.

At one year, the survival of patients who received lungs preserved less than 12 hours was 86%, and 87% for those who received lungs preserved for more than 12 hours. The widely accepted International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation benchmark for one-year survival of lung transplant patients is 80%.

Donor lungs are fragile and more susceptible to injury than other organs, explains Dr. Singer, noting that only about 15-20% of all donor lungs are used for transplant. "We need to explore every opportunity for those waiting for a life-saving transplant to be able to receive a healthy donor lung." About 20% of all those needing a lung transplant die while waiting for one.

The study used a combination of warm and cold preservation to increase the length of time the lungs were able to survive safely outside the donor body.

Retrieved lungs were first cooled to slow down deterioration and tissue injury, transported to TGH, then treated and evaluated with the ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) system for four to six hours - first pioneered by Drs. Keshavjee and Cypel in 2008 at TGH.

Subsequently lungs were subjected to protective cooling again until transplantation.

In the EVLP system, the lungs are placed in a protective dome in which a system continuously pumps a bloodless solution of oxygen, proteins and nutrients into the injured donor lungs, mimicking normal physiological conditions. This makes it possible for the injured cells to begin repairing themselves, and sets the stage for more sophisticated repair techniques to be applied to donor lungs.
Since 2012, there has been an unprecedented 30 per cent increase in lung transplants at TGH as a result of the EVLP system. TGH now routinely performs more than 120 lung transplants a year, making this one of the largest centres in the world.

Dr. Cypel describes the paradigm shift as not only preserving donor organs, but interrupting the injury process to the lungs, and enhancing their recovery.

With longer preservation times, we can get organs from longer distances anywhere in North America, he says, while allowing more flexibility in planning surgeries, in allowing patients more latitude to travel to Toronto for their transplants rather than waiting in Toronto, and extra time for better immunological matching between donated lungs and recipients. It also provides more opportunities to treat injured organs initially deemed unsuitable for transplant, he adds.

"Now we don't have to rush. Lung transplants don't have to be emergency surgeries."
